At the start of this New Year, my husband quietly began a gentle Tai Chi routine and invited me to join him. It’s simple — five movements, repeated five times, with slow breathing — and takes only a few minutes. He took to it immediately and even added warm-ups. I, on the other hand, noticed some stiffness in my neck and shoulders while my hips and back felt just fine. That got me wondering: Why is Tai Chi suddenly everywhere for people over 55? Granny Does A Dopamine Detox

Breaking free from procrastination isn’t easy, but I’m diving

into a dopamine detox to reset my habits. Join me on this journey!

Just over a year ago, one of my Facebook friends (also a work colleague from years ago in a women's shelter) mentioned that she had just spent 12 minutes completing a task that she had been thinking about for months. I don't even want to know what the task was, but I got to thinking about all the stuff I know about breaking out of procrastinating, and how I waste hours, days, months, years(?) burdened with hardship thoughts.

I was a social worker-therapist for many years, supporting women to make meaningful changes in their lives-- to be safe, to regain their visions of the life they wanted when they were little girls, to be healthier, happier, and to break out of old debilitating habits.

When I retired from that work I took up an expensive coaching certification program and was certified to do many of the things that I did in my past jobs. The idea of having my own biz was exciting, but time marched on and I found myself more attracted to blogging than to "attracting clients"-- a very extroverted pursuit, as it turns out. I was also more than a little burnt out after years of working, pick and shovel, in a field of heavy second-hand trauma. Long story-shorter, I sort of sunk down into the pleasures of being a West Coast retiree-- gardening, blogging delicious, healthy vegan recipes, enjoying the laid-back lifestyle, traveling a little, inhaling the fragrance of adorable grandkids, etc.

Then, after 20 years of that (I'm 75), I find that I am sleeping poorly, rarely getting out for walks, and on my screens for most of every day. Yes, I do a little writing, but I am easily distracted and I have become one of those people who hops to Google or ChatGPT for the answer to almost everything.

I continue to be perfectionistic, so I really want to be an improved version of myself. I signed both my husband and me up for a lovely online program for people who want to avoid cognitive decline as seniors. We learned a lot from that. Then I went on to do a daily lesson in a foreign language online (German on Duolingo). I went a little over my head into the Internet Cloud.

"It's all good", as some of my friends would have it, until it's not.

Before he moved off to another country, my doctor advised in his kind, gentle, discreet way, "I think you would feel much better if you exercised."

I know that to be true. I ever write pretty good articles about self-care. But I am so distracted and anxious that I do not do what I know will improve my health and well-being.

Sooo-- I decided to take a bit of a dopamine detox, a phrase I ran across in my granddaughter's Youtube video, and then in a video interview with Dr. Anna Lembke, a psychiatrist, and author of a couple of books about internet addictions and other pleasures, rewards, and addictions.

And ironically, I did some introspection and writing that I turned over to ChatGPT to help me set out an outline of a few things I might do to make some changes.

I plan to start tomorrow with some of these suggestions:

A walk.
4 hours less time online each day.
Take a week to think before making online purchases
Better sleep habits.
Fewer sweets.
More contact with in-flesh friends.
Do some tasks with a timer to lower my anxiety about mess and clutter in the house.
The various stress relief exercises.

Simplify your food: Eat whole, unprocessed meals to avoid dopamine spikes from sugar and junk food.

Engage in deep work: Set a timer for 25 minutes (Pomodoro method) and focus on a single task.

Replace quick dopamine fixes: Swap passive entertainment (scrolling, binge-watching) with active engagement (reading, writing, creating).

2. 10-Minute Daily Stress Relief Routine

Breathing exercise (2 min): Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 6.

Journaling (3 min): Write a few sentences about what’s on my mind.

The longer form of this could be done every morning as "pages"-- the basis of a creativity re-set from the book The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. The idea of the "pages" is to start the day by dumping all the nonsense and negativity that currently rents out your brain, writing stream-of-consciousness for as long as it takes-- barely taking your pen off the paper-- to the place where you feel like all those nasty feelings are flushed. Read the book and try the regimen-- it works! Look for the book in secondhand bookstores or little libraries —it's been around for a while. Progressive muscle relaxation (5 min): Tense and release each muscle group from head to toe.

Optional: Replace with meditation, a devotional, prayer, stretching, or listening to calming music.

3. Keeping a Tidy House in 10 Minutes a Day

Choose one small area daily: Kitchen counters, bathroom sink, or a quick sweep.

Use a timer: Set it for 10 minutes and stop when it rings.

Do one load of laundry every other day: This prevents buildup.

Declutter one item per day: Over time, this creates a tidier space.

4. 30-Minute Daily Walk Routine

Using A.I. To Schedule Gardening Tasks

January on Mid-North Vancouver Island: The Gardening Tasks Resume

Organic Granny has lived in a suburban community on Vancouver Island for the past 20 years. We reside on about a third of an acre lot and have been fumbling to handle all the tasks necessary for fruitful organic gardening. Our son has been staying with us and sharing his energy, gardening skills, and tech know-how. We are so thankful for that.

In this new year, we have decided to use a more organized system of managing all the tasks that precede a more successful growing season. For the months of January and February, I provided the following prompts for the information and schedule we will use for the pruning, planting, and bed preparations for our specified plants. To do this, we provided the following instructions (prompts) to A.I.:

(1) I live in the mid-North area of Vancouver Island on the east side of the Island. I want to know what gardening tasks I should be doing in January and February.

(2) I am an organic gardener and want to know what I should be doing for the following plants that I have growing here: (I listed the plants you see below).

(3) Please list the resources you use to arrive at the tasks and schedule

What you see below is what A.I. customized as our January/February gardening schedule. You, too, can enjoy a customized schedule made up for your particular zone and list of plants you grow or want to plant. We used the (unknown) A.I. who answered the questions we'd typed into the search bar on our browser. You can, of course, use ChatGPT or other A.I. for the same process. After the schedule appears, go ahead and cut and paste it to a Word document, Google doc, or blog post. Or you could get A.I. to make and save it as a .PDF document with check boxes that you can print as a handy sheet to follow and check off as you attend to the various jobs. I intend to do that.

In late January and February, gardening on the east side of mid-Vancouver Island focuses heavily on pruning and bed preparation while plants are still dormant. Because of the region's mild maritime climate (Zone 7-8), these months are the primary window for maintenance before spring growth begins in March.

Pruning and Care Guide

Roses: Perform major pruning in February as buds begin to swell. Remove dead or weak wood (thinner than a pencil) and thin to 5–7 strong canes. Cut canes at a 45° angle just above an outward-facing bud to encourage an open, "vase-like" shape.

Hydrangea: Pruning depends on the variety.

Panicle (H. paniculata) and Smooth (H. arborescens): Prune in late winter (February) as they bloom on new wood.

Mophead/Bigleaf (H. macrophylla): Do not prune hard now, as they bloom on old wood. Only remove dead, brittle stems or old flower heads to avoid cutting off this year’s blooms.

Sour Cherry Trees: Prune while dormant in late January or February to shape the tree and remove diseased wood. Apply a dormant spray (lime Sulphur and dormant oil) by late February to prevent pests and diseases like brown rot.

Raspberries: Late winter is the time to prune. For summer-fruiting varieties, cut out the canes that fruited last year to the ground. For ever-bearing types, you can cut all canes to the ground in February for a single late-summer crop.

Grapes: Prune heavily in February before the sap starts to flow. Grapes produce fruit on new growth from one-year-old wood; remove up to 90% of last year's growth to maintain structure.

Blueberries: Prune in late winter to remove dead or very old (grey, peeling) wood to encourage new, productive red canes. Blueberries prefer acidic soil; top-dress with peat moss or acidic mulch now.

Lavender: Avoid heavy pruning until you see new growth in spring, but you can lightly tidy up dead stems in late February.

Lilacs & Peonies: Do not prune these now. Lilacs bloom on old wood and should be pruned immediately after they flower. For peonies, ensure old foliage is cleared in the fall; otherwise, remove it now to prevent fungal issues as new "red shoots" emerge in late February.

Planting

Bare-Root Plants: February is the ideal time to plant bare-root roses, strawberries, raspberries, and fruit trees.

Small Fruits: Container-grown blueberries and grapes can be planted if the soil is workable and not waterlogged.

Indoor Seeds: Start seeds for onions, leeks, and begonias indoors by February.

Preparing Beds

Soil Amendment: Spread compost or well-rotted manure over vegetable and flower beds. This allows nutrients to leach into the soil with late winter rains.

Weeding: Pull overwintering weeds like bittercress or chickweed before they go to seed in the early spring warmth.

Mulching: Apply a fresh layer of mulch (bark or leaf mold) around shrubs like hydrangeas and roses to suppress spring weeds and retain moisture.

Early one morning I was watching a clip from an old Batman TV show — the Adam West version, years old now. It was hilarious. Batman was trying to dispose of a lit bomb, running around the dock area of some city, clearly aware that time was running out. Every time he thought he could safely detonate it, someone or something stopped him — nuns walking by, a couple of lovers embracing, a family of ducks, and on and on. The interruptions just kept coming. It was screamingly funny.

But as I laughed, I also found myself thinking: what kind of humor produces a scene like this? What assumptions are baked into it?

What struck me was the abundance of empathy in the writing. The joke only works because Batman refuses — absolutely refuses — to harm anyone. Not people. Not animals. Not even ducks. Every living creature matters enough to slow him down, even with a bomb ticking in his hands.

That kind of empathy feels rarer now. Or perhaps it’s still there, but far less admired.

What We Mean When We Talk About Empathy

Empathy is the ability to imagine another’s experience — to sense what someone else might be feeling, and to let that understanding shape our actions. It’s more than feeling sorry for someone. It requires attention, restraint, and humility. Empathy asks us to pause long enough to say: Your life matters too.

Yet in recent years, empathy has been increasingly criticized. Some public figures argue that empathy is sentimental, manipulative, or even dangerous — that it clouds judgment or weakens moral clarity. The scene works because the writers assumed something we no longer say out loud very often: every life is worth stopping for. Even when it’s inconvenient. Even when the clock is ticking.

Empathy doesn’t mean we never act. It means we refuse to become careless with who gets harmed along the way.

Maybe that kind of empathy isn’t outdated after all.

Maybe it’s just harder? And more necessary than ever.
