Long-Term Organization

We've all been there. You spend an entire weekend organizing your home, everything looks Instagram-perfect, and you swear this time it's going to stay that way forever.

Fast forward three months, and you're stepping over piles of who-knows-what wondering how your beautifully organized space turned into this chaos again.

You're not alone, and surprisingly, it's not just about willpower or being naturally “messy.”

The truth is, there's a huge gap in home organization advice about what makes systems actually stick around long-term.

We have zillions of books on how to declutter, but almost nothing tells us how to keep those spaces tidy when real life happens!

Why Nobody Talks About This

Most organization gurus focus on the exciting makeover phase—you know, those satisfying before-and-after photos that make us all click “buy now” on storage bins we don't need.

But sustainable organization isn't about that initial weekend warrior session.

It's about what happens during the Tuesday evening rush when everyone's hungry, homework needs checking, and no one can’t find the right cleats for tonight’s practice.

As it turns out, long-term organization studies are practically non-existent because they're:

• Not as Instagram-worthy as transformation stories
• Super complicated to research (life happens!)
• Way less marketable than “organize your home in a weekend!” promises

So we're left piecing together tips from behavioral science, habit experts, and that one friend who somehow maintains a tidy home despite having five kids and a dog (how does she do it?!).

The Real Reasons Home Organizing Systems Crash and Burn

Before we fix the problem, let's get real about why most organization systems fall apart faster than a toddler's attention span:

1. They're too rigid for real life. Systems that work in an Instagram reel but not during flu season? Doomed from the start!
   
2. They demand superhero-level consistency. Any system requiring daily perfection will collapse the week of swim lessons and soccer practice.
   
3. They’re not personalized. Organization isn't one-size-fits-all—your family's situation makes a big difference in what will work, obviously.
   
4. They can't handle life transitions. Back-to-school, holidays, new baby? These are organization system killers without a survival plan.
   
5. They offer no comeback strategy. Most systems tell you how to set up but not how to bounce back after a crazy month (or Tuesday!).
   
6. They don't help you build organizing and decluttering skills.

Building Organization That Actually Lasts (Even With Kids!)

While there's no magic bullet (sorry!), we can borrow some science-backed strategies to create organization systems with staying power:

1. Design for your ACTUAL life, not your fantasy Instagram life

Be honest – where do the backpacks really end up? Where does mail naturally pile up? Instead of fighting these patterns, work with them!

Try this today: Notice where things naturally collect in your home this week. That's where your storage solutions belong – even if it's not where you “should” put them. If backpacks always land on the kitchen chair, put a hook right there instead of expecting them to make it to the mudroom.

2. Embrace the “Good Enough” approach

A system that works pretty well most of the time will beat a “perfect” system every single time. 

Try this today: Create a 10-minute “reset routine” you can use after busy days. Not a deep clean – just a quick restoration of basic order. For bonus points, get the kids involved with a racing game: “Can we beat the timer?”

3. Piggyback on habits you already have

Research by BJ Fogg from Stanford University says attaching new habits to existing routines makes them way more likely to stick. Use this to your advantage!

Try this today: Pick something you do without fail (making coffee, brushing teeth) and attach ONE small organization task to it. “After I start the coffee maker, I'll clear off the kitchen counter.” That's it!

4. Use “If-Then” planning for predictable messes

Those behavioral scientists know what they're talking about! Creating specific plans for common situations helps you respond automatically.

Try this today: Write down three “if-then” plans for your biggest clutter culprits: “If Amazon packages arrive, then I'll open them and recycle the boxes immediately.” Put it on a sticky note where you'll see it!

5. Make maintaining EASIER than making a mess

The simpler it is to put something away, the more likely it'll happen. If organizing requires Olympic-level effort, it won't last!

Try this today: Go through your most-used storage areas and ask: “Could my 7-year-old put something away here in under 5 seconds?” If not, simplify!

6. Plan for the inevitable mess comeback

Let's face it – sometimes life gets crazy and clutter wins. Having a recovery plan is your secret weapon!

Try this today: Schedule one 30-minute “reset session” on your calendar each week. Make it fun with your favorite podcast or an audiobook. This is your safety net for when life happens!

The Honest Truth

No home stays perfectly organized all the time – especially not with kids, pets, partners, and, you know, LIFE happening all around us. 

The most sustainable systems aren't about perfection—they're about having reasonable expectations and simple ways to get back on track when things slide.

The goal isn't a showroom home. It's a functional space that supports your family without making you feel like a failure when it's not perfect (which is most of the time, let's be real!).

When you think of decluttering, it probably makes you think of big marathon cleaning sessions where you're expected to get rid of 75% of your stuff in a weekend.

Raise your hand if you've ever felt discouraged watching a decluttering Instagram reel that makes it look SO easy while knowing your reality looks very different! I know I've been there.

And it's not surprising that most people think of decluttering as arduous work that’s nearly impossible – social media and TV love to show the exciting before and after videos of big decluttering projects.

You know the ones—where someone magically transforms a disaster zone into a magazine-perfect space in what seems like minutes.

Meanwhile, I'm over here trying to decide if I really need five different measuring cups while helping with homework, trying to make supper, and wondering where I put my phone!

But here's the truth:

Most of us don't have the time or energy to do huge decluttering sessions. 

Decluttering is more effective when you approach it as developing a skill you can use for the rest of your life, instead of a big project that can be done in a weekend.

As a mom of two teenagers who once thought she could declutter her entire storage closet in one afternoon (spoiler alert: I couldn't), this realization was truly game-changing for me.

Learning to declutter effectively for long-term results is similar to learning a language or another complex skill.

With consistent practice, you'll get better at it!

It's like how I gradually learned to keep up with the mail instead of letting it pile up on the counter for weeks. Small steps, consistent practice!

Of course, you could opt for a big decluttering project, and even finish it with amazing results. But true decluttering success comes from developing specific abilities over time, not from marathon cleaning sessions.

And let's be honest—who among us has an entire weekend to dedicate solely to decluttering? Between baseball practice, grocery shopping, and trying to find a minute to actually shower, most of us are working with 10-15 minute pockets of time at best!

The Decluttering Skill Set

As you practice decluttering on a consistent basis, you'll develop a unique skill set that will make your decluttering more effective over time.

Think of it as your decluttering superpower that grows stronger every time you successfully part with that shirt you haven't worn in three years but kept “just in case.”

Learning the skill of decluttering happens in phases, which I'll outline in this article.

But first, here are the major skills you'll develop as related to decluttering:

• Decision-making confidence
• Space evaluation and management 
• Mental flexibility for letting go of items 
• Systems thinking and creation 
• Habit development and maintenance.

Don't worry if these sound intimidating—I promise you already use some of these skills when deciding which leftovers in the fridge need to go or which of your child's 87 art projects from last week to keep!

That's a lot of complex skills that make up the even more complex skill of decluttering! No wonder it can be so challenging!

The Beginner Phase: First Steps for Decluttering Newcomers

This is the phase where you can see a lot of progress quickly by starting with the “easy” items to declutter: obvious trash, duplicates, things you've outgrown, etc.

One of my first decluttering wins? Finding SEVEN half-empty bottles of shampoo in my bathroom cabinet. Seven!

I felt like a decluttering champion just by combining them into 3 bottles and getting rid of the extra containers.

If you do short decluttering sessions, you'll gradually build your focus without overwhelm.

I like to set a 10-minute timer while my coffee brews in the morning. It's amazing what you can accomplish in the time it takes to make your daily caffeine!

You'll start to learn to identify what belongs in your space and what doesn't, while building your confidence through small, visible wins.

That rush you get when you can finally close your junk drawer without something jamming it? Pure decluttering dopamine!

The Developing Phase: Expanding on Your Abilities

After you've gotten the hang of doing short decluttering sessions, you'll naturally level up to the Developing Phase.

This is where things get exciting—like when I finally tackled my kids' dressers and could actually see what clothes they had. Game-changer!

In this phase you'll tackle more challenging decluttering categories, and you'll naturally create your own personalized decision frameworks.

For me, this looked like finally establishing my “one in, one out” rule for kitchen gadgets. No new air fryer unless something else goes to donation!

You'll have a better sense of when you need to take a break too as you improve at recognizing and managing decision fatigue.

Because decision fatigue is real! I once spent 10 minutes deciding whether to keep or donate a half-used spiral notebook. That's when you know it's time for chocolate and a mental break.

As we navigate through clutter, every decision—big or small—drains our limited mental resources.

Research by Dr. Roy Baumeister, who coined the term ‘decision fatigue,' shows that as we make more decisions, our ability to make future decisions deteriorates, making it harder to stay on top of the clutter.

During this phase, you’ll also refine some of the systems you created earlier as you learn more about how you use your space, and what you need to make it practical and useful.

The Proficient Phase: Mastering Ongoing Management

Those who keep up with their decluttering habit over time will eventually get to a level of mastery where they can implement preventative practices, and use efficient daily and weekly maintenance routines.

This is the promised land, friend! 

Where you can actually find matching socks in under 30 seconds and you instinctively know when that free swag from a conference needs to go directly into the donation bin rather than cluttering up your office.

Here you may begin to transfer these skills to family members, either by example or through explicit teaching.

One of the signs that my decluttering practice was transferring by example? It was when my son took it upon himself to completely reset his bedroom in preparation for his grandma’s visit. Organization skills and thoughtfulness? Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it.

You'll also be able to confidently handle decluttering the most challenging decluttering categories and sentimental items.

Like finally going through those boxes of your children's baby clothes without ugly-crying for hours. 

Deliberate Practice for Decluttering Mastery

Learning to declutter isn't a structured path that's the same for everyone.

Your decluttering journey might look completely different from mine or your neighbor's, and that's perfectly okay! My friend decluttered her entire garage in a weekend, while it took me weeks of 10-minute sessions to achieve the same result.

Depending on your situation, motivation, and energy, your path will differ from the next person's decluttering journey.

But decluttering on a regular basis will absolutely help you improve.

It’s like how I had to learn how to use a new blogging platform for Organizing Moms —it felt clunky and confusing and I did NOT like it! But with consistent practice, it started to feel like second nature.

Decluttering works the same way: it might feel hard in the beginning, but the more you do it, the easier and more natural it becomes. 

Similar to learning a language or playing an instrument, decluttering is a skill that improves with consistent practice. According to Anders Ericsson's research on deliberate practice, we develop expertise not through sporadic efforts, but by intentionally practicing and refining our abilities over time.

Structured exercises like the 10-minute tasks can help you strengthen specific decluttering abilities, and the spaced repetition of working on decluttering daily will help you retain your skills.

Learning from setbacks is also a part of the process of building your decluttering skills.

Like that time I decluttered old magazines that I thought no one was interested in, and then my husband started looking for them. Oops!

But even mistakes teach us something about what we truly value and use.

Often people measure their decluttering progress by counting the number of items they remove from their space.

While this can be super motivating, it's important to consider the progress you make at developing decluttering skills.

The real win isn't just that you donated 50 items—it's that you can now confidently make decisions about your belongings without second-guessing yourself for days!

Becoming an Organized Person

When you focus on building your decluttering skills, you're upleveling your goal from just “organize my house” to “becoming an organized person.”

It's like the difference between going on a crash diet versus developing healthy eating habits that last a lifetime. One is temporary; the other transforms who you are!

When you begin to think of yourself as an organized person with strong decluttering skills, you'll make decisions that make you more organized!

As James Clear points out in his book “Atomic Habits” when you focus on identity-based habits (“I am an organized person”) rather than outcome-based goals (“I need to organize this closet”), your new behaviors stick because they're aligned with who you believe yourself to be. This small mindset shift has made all the difference in my decluttering journey!

Remember that skills develop incrementally with practice.

Each small victory—each drawer organized, each decision made with confidence—brings you one step closer to the calm, functional space you deserve.

Nightstand Organization

Your nightstand is the last thing you see before you go to bed, and the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning.

So, if your nightstand is feeling a little chaotic, taking time to organize it can have a big impact on your sleep, and how you start your days.

Start by Decluttering

Ready to organize your nightstand space? Begin by removing everything that doesn't belong.

It's time to get rid of trash, dirty cups, clothes, and anything else that's cluttering the space.

Clearing the area will help you make room for the essentials that make your nightstand feel like an organized retreat!

Examine How You Use the Space

Think about how you use the space by your bed, and plan accordingly.

And be realistic about how you use your nightstand!

If you regularly use your phone or tablet, make sure you have charging cords nearby.

I know, all of the popular advice says that we shouldn't use our phones before bed, but if you do, set your space up to suit your needs. YOU are in charge of your space and how you use it.

It's helpful to make a list of 2-3 things you use your nightstand for so you can make space for what you need. If you read in bed, you'll want a good light source, and maybe a pair of reading glasses or eyeglass cleaning wipes. <–These are links to my favorites on Amazon.

If you find you're always removing trash from your bedside area, put a small trashcan there to make cleanup easier.

Gather Everything Needed for Your Nightstand

Next step is to gather up everything you NEED to have on your nightstand.

I like to gather all of this up on the bed and put it into categories.

That way you can see everything you have, and assess if you need additional storage solutions to help you keep everything organized.

Nightstand Organization Finds

Now that you have everything you need all in one spot, it's time to look at organizing solutions to help you keep everything orderly.

Being able to find what you need on your bedside table is so helpful, and it can actually help you improve your sleep if you're not having to wake up in the middle of the night to find things like the remote for your fan, tissues, or whatever else you may need.

Bark Phone Review: Is It the Best Safe Phone for Kids?

If you've landed on this page, you're probably wondering if Bark Parental Control Phones will work for your family. 

We used the phones for 2 years when our children were in middle school; the most part, they were a good fit for us. But there were some things I didn't love about them, so I'm going to give you my honest take on what's good and bad about Bark.

Introduction to Bark Parental Control Phones

If you're a parent trying to figure out how to give your kid a phone without opening the floodgates to the entire internet, you’re not alone.

It’s a tough balance—we want our kids to stay connected with friends and family, but we also don’t want them glued to screens 24/7 or stumbling across things they shouldn’t see. That’s where the Bark Phone comes in.

Unlike a regular smartphone, the Bark Phone is designed specifically for kids' safety.

It comes with built-in parental controls, screen time limits, content monitoring, and even location tracking—all without the constant battle of checking their phone or worrying if they’ve found a way to turn off the settings.

Features of the Bark Phone

We probably didn't use all of the features that Bark offers, so I'm just going to list the ones that we found helpful:

• Approval of apps – With other phones, kids can download apps that could be harmful. With the Bark Phone, your child can send you an app request and you can either approve or decline the app. If an app isn't approved by you, it can't be downloaded to the Bark Phone.
• Time limits – You can set specific time limits or times of day that your child can use different types of apps. I liked that I could shut down the phones during the night so that the distraction of the phone wasn't interrupting sleep. We always keep our phones on a charging station at night, so this might have been overkill for us. But it was nice to know that the phones wouldn't be keeping anyone up. You can also disable the phone through the app if you need to.
• Location tracking – You can see the location of your child's phone from the Bark app that you'll install on your own device.
• You can go without web browsers – If you don't approve a web browser, your child will not have access to the internet. We started out with this so our kids could gradually get used to having a phone, and not feel so distracted. This was a good thing in the beginning, but after a while it was a huge stumbling block for us.
• You can turn off the internet to the phone. 

Real Time Alerts for Potentially Harmful Content

If your child views any possibly harmful content, Bark will alert you.

When we first set up alerts, we got messages about even the smallest things.

Our kids had Gmail installed on their phones, and they'd get notifications of new videos posted by some of their favorite gaming YouTubers. As you can imagine, that sent up a lot of red flags for violent content!

You can adjust the level of monitoring and notifications you want to receive, so if you're getting too many notifications about minor things, you can change that.

Having customizable monitoring settings was super helpful.

Ability to Block Specific Apps and Websites

We did not use this feature, but you can block specific websites or apps.

We didn't use a web browser on the Bark Phones, but if we had, being able to block specific websites could potentially be helpful if there's one site that's problematic.

Cons of Using Bark

• I found the setup process confusing and slow. Honestly, I almost sent back the phones when we started out because it was so frustrating.
• The phones are slow to update settings. If we turned off access to the phones and then turned them back on, it would take a long time for the settings to change on our kid's phone.
• They weren't compatible with a lot of things our kids' teachers were using at school. If their teacher wanted them to use a new app, I had to approve it.
• Our kids were embarrassed by the phones. Even though they are nice Samsung phones, it's pretty obvious that they're parental control phones. If your kids are younger, this probably won't be an issue.

Is the Bark Phone Too Invasive?

One of the things I liked the best about these phones is that they helped me keep my kids safe while respecting their privacy.

If I received an alert about potentially harmful content in a text message with from their friends, it didn't include the entire conversation. It just showed me the concerning content, and a few messages before and after for context.

Honestly most of the time, these alerts were totally overkill and I'd ignore them. If someone texted my child something about feeling sick, I'd get an alert about medically concerning content.

If something concerning did come up, I could have a conversation with my child about it, and that helped both of us learn!

If you're looking for something that will help you see absolutely everything your kid is doing on their phone, this isn't the solution for you.

I'm sure the Bark Phone won't catch all concerning content, but it does a pretty good job.

Can Be Expensive

The pricing structure has changed since we first signed up for Bark, and I think it's more reasonable now.

But cost was definitely an issue for us. 

I thought it was worth it to help our kids get a slower start with having a cell phone.

And it helped me learn about how to help my kids navigate the online world as a parent.

But I'm not gonna lie…I was really looking forward to graduating from our Bark Phones so we could lower our monthly cell service bills!

Conclusion: Is Bark A Good Parental Control Phone?

Yes! I'm glad we used the Bark Phones for a couple of years.

Bark keeps improving it's technology, and hopefully some of the things that frustrated me as a parent user have or will be fixed.

If you're hesitant about starting with cell phones, but your kids need a way to communicate with their family and friends, this is a solid option.
