The unique combination of frequent rainfall, construction zones, heat and heavy traffic amidst a population boom all contribute to Orlando's poor road conditions.

Many a Central Florida driver navigating around potholes or bumpy pavement might describe the region’s roads as bad. But one car repair chain has crunched the numbers and proclaimed they’re the worst in the country.

According to Pep Boys’ “Worst Roads in America” study, drivers in the Orlando area shell out for more road-related repairs than their counterparts in the 35 metro regions analyzed.

The study looked at service data from hundreds of Pep Boys tire and auto service centers across the U.S. and found Orlando shops had higher-than-average numbers of wheel alignments, suspension work and single-tire replacements.

Those components “are basically the first line of defense between the vehicle and the pavement,” said regional company spokesman Jean-Pierre Issa. “They absorb the impact when roads are uneven and deteriorating, which is why we see them most commonly.”

Local transportation officials were wary of the study, although they acknowledge that many local roads need work. It analyzes service data exclusively from Pep Boys, which has around 800 locations nationwide but only operates in 35 states. Florida is one of the company’s largest markets, with Central Florida alone having about 80 locations.

Mary Ann Horne, spokesperson for Metro Plan Orlando, the region’s transportation planning agency, said in an email that more data from various auto repair companies would be necessary before bestowing the region with the title of ‘worst in America.’

“It’s hard to see the direct connection between road condition and car repairs at one commercial outlet,” Horne said in an email. “Many factors can be at play for these ‘road-related repairs’ that the company cites.”

Orlando spokeswoman Andrea Otero said the city wasn’t part of the study and “cannot verify its findings.” But she added the city is making historic investments to improve streets with this year’s budget, allocating $7.5 million for roadway pavement rehabilitation, more funding than ever before.

On Summerlin Avenue, for example, the city and the Orlando Utilities Commission are “replacing aging infrastructure and fully rebuilding the roadway from the base up, including new asphalt or brick paving to provide a smoother, more consistent driving experience,” Otero said.

Pep Boys would not share specific numbers such as the total amount of repairs or how much was spent on them, due to what Issa said was the sensitive nature of the “exclusive first-party information collected through our service centers.” But he said service records from September 2024 to September 2025 show Orlando drivers visited Pep Boys more frequently for those specific repairs than drivers in its other 34 metros.

The unique combination of frequent rainfall, large construction zones like those on Interstate 4, heat, and heavy commuter and tourist traffic all contribute to Orlando’s poor road conditions, Issa said.

“Florida roads face a unique environmental pressure,” Issa said. “In particular, heat really softens the asphalt, and the heavy rains that we get seasonally accelerate the cracking in roads.”

Florida dominated the Pep Boys list, with Panama City, the Tampa Bay area, West Palm Beach and Tallahassee all in the top ten and Miami–Ft. Lauderdale and Pensacola in the top 21.

Central Florida drivers are absorbing the cost of road related car repairs that vary based on the size, age and model of the vehicle. The average price of a tire today is between $150 and upwards of $300. But if needed repairs are more extensive, such as a suspension replacement, it can cost anywhere between $400 to more than $1500, Issa said.

Orange County invested $100 million on transportation improvements in 2023, with about 19 county road projects currently in the design phase, according to the county’s online transportation dashboard.

“We are committed to working tirelessly with our limited budgeting to make roads as safe and functional as we can for our users,” said Darrell Moody, spokesperson for Orange County.

Roadway safety and maintenance are also top priorities for Seminole County, spokeswoman Andy Wontor said, citing 24 completed roadway and bridge projects and 56 miles of resurfaced roadways.

The Magnifica plan calls for a guard-gated golf resort, 15 minutes from Disney, with hundreds of mansions, condos, a full spa and 5-star dining — an approach so opulent many observers didn't believe it was real.

After the 2024 media blitz announcing one of the most ambitious, ultra-luxury developments in Osceola County history, the team behind Magnifica went quiet, leading many to question if the $1 billion development was really too good to be true.

The plan, unveiled by CIG Companies founders Charles and Stacey Carey, calls for a gated golf community in Kissimmee with 250 mansions, 50 condos and high-end amenities and a sister resort across the street with a full spa and a mix of suites and resort residences. The project would rise on the 1,720-acre Brown Ranch Six property on Poinciana Boulevard, about 1.7 miles south of U.S. 192.

Now comes a strong sign that Magnifica is moving ahead. Lakeland-based Saunders Real Estate represents the Brown family, descendants of pioneer cattle rancher Oren Brown, and has recently changed the property’s status from “for sale” to “under contract,” according to a report in GrowthSpotter.

Officials with CIG Companies could not be reached for comment.

A longtime county commissioner, the late Oren Brown famously refused an offer from Walt Disney himself for his 6,750 acres, dividing it between his sons, Horace Epps Brown and Frank E. Brown. In 1996, Horace Brown sold 1,500 acres to the Florida Mitigation Bank to pay inheritance taxes and kept the rest, known as Brown Ranch Six.

The Frank E. Brown estate sold 1,500 acres of ranchlands in 2019 to Disney for $11 million. Disney has also used it as a wetland mitigation bank. A year later, Pulte Homes bought 150 acres closer to the Poinciana SunRail station for $9.5 million and developed the 502-home Cypress Hammock community there. In 2021, Frankie Brown Norris sold 120 acres on Old Tampa Highway for $4.5 million to BSC LogisticCenter LLC, but there has been no zoning or permitting activity on the property.

So far, no permits have been filed with Osceola County for Magnifica, but the developer has requested wetland determination reports from the South Florida Water Management District for the resort site, which is planned on roughly 75 acres east of Poinciana Boulevard at the intersection with Oren Brown Road. The two parcels north of Oren Brown are owned by the Brown estate. The 15-acre parcel south of the intersection is owned by an affiliate of Intram Investments, an Orlando developer that bought the property in 2023 for $5.75 million.

“I can confirm that we are under contract,” Intram Vice President Randy Hodge told GrowthSpotter. “They’ve made a deposit, and they’re in the inspection period.”

The contract was signed on Jan. 6. Hodge said the wetland determination request from the water management district is part of the due diligence. “There’s a small wetland on that property they’ll have to deal with.”

The resort, as described during the 2025 announcement, is set to include a five-story building with 113 suites and 111 residences for a total of 224 units. Suites would range in size from 550 to 1,300 square feet and residences would be between 1,300 to 13,000 square feet with private terraces. The crown jewel of the units would be a two-story penthouse with 13,000 square feet of living space, five bedrooms, and five bathrooms. The suites and residences will feature architecture with European and Caribbean influences.

The resort would include a 70,000-square-foot spa with a grotto, a serenity garden, and wellness lounges. Other amenities include a gym, indoor and outdoor yoga spaces, nature trails, a private 9-hole golf course, a mini golf course, pickleball and tennis courts, a children’s aquatic park, and a pet grooming station. Additionally, there could be up to six dining venues, including a French bakery, a rooftop restaurant, poolside cafes, and a wine-tasting room.

Magnifica hit the radar with a splashy launch event at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando in late 2024. The Careys outlined their brand vision in a welcome letter and during the invitation-only weekend launch, which also included a private after-hours party Sunday night at Universal Islands of Adventure. “At Magnifica, we aspire to perfect the highest standards in hospitality,” they wrote.”Our vision is to create a timeless, authentic, and sustainable brand that encompasses private residences, resorts, and air travel. Every aspect of our future offerings is being meticulously crafted to provide beknown comfort and quality.”

CIG Companies applied last year for a wetland determination for the larger parcel, where the golf community and residences are planned, but they withdrew the application in August.

MacCubbin gives gardening advice for Central Florida on care of cardboard palms, mango trees, cannas, edible ginger, lime and lemon trees, maple trees and lawn care

Q: Our cardboard palm turned brown after the freeze. Will it grow back and how much pruning is needed?

A: Most of what are called cardboard palms look pretty sad at this time. Actually, these are not palms at all, but cycads best-called cardboard plants. The name comes from the feeling of the fronds that are like cardboard. Take a look at the base of the plants or within the canopy of brown fronds. Most likely there are green ones, too, indicating there is plenty of life in these plants. Now would be a good time to prune out the dead fronds so spring growth can renew your plants. Keep them moist and apply a spring feeding to encourage bud growth from the base to produce new fronds.

Q: We have a tall mango tree with all brown leaves. Will it recover from the freeze?

A: There is a lot of hope your tree can recover, but most mangos that froze for several hours are severely damaged. It’s doubtful they are alive above the graft where the new variety was added. Scrape the bark down the limbs and trunk. If you find green, then the tree can survive and produce new shoots. If there is life, but below the graft, the tree is not going to regrow the desired variety. In this case a new tree would be needed.

Q: Our cannas have died back for the winter. Can we dig the bulbs and transplant them at this time?

But the rhizomes, or root portions, are usually insulated by soil. (Courtesy of Tom MacCubbin)

A: Extremely cold weather encouraged the continued decline of cannas for winter. It’s normal for cannas to turn brown and die back to the ground during the colder months. But don’t worry, the rhizomes, or root portions, below ground are usually insulated by soil and can grow back during warm spring weather. Feel free to dig the rhizomes anytime now and separate them into individual portions. They can be stored for a few weeks or immediately planted in prepared garden sites or containers. Keep moist after planting and apply a slow-release fertilizer when new growth is noted.

Q: I purchased a small lime and lemon tree. When can I transplant them into 20-gallon containers and what should I use for soil?

A: Wait no longer to give these citrus trees a new container. The weather is warm and the risk of a damaging freeze is minimal. Use a quality potting soil mixture. Most contain peat moss, bark and perlite. It should flow easily through your fingers indicating it has good aeration and won’t compact. Add the trees to their new containers but leave about 2 inches of free space at the top to catch and direct water down through the root systems. After a few weeks, add a slow-release fertilizer to the surface of the soil following instructions for container culture. Then make repeat feedings according to labels throughout the growing seasons.

Q: My red maple tree is opening its buds and starting growth. Is it too late to perform needed pruning?

A: Now might be the best time to give your maple tree a trimming. Even though it has begun shoot and leaf growth, it’s not so far along that the tree’s time and energy is wasted. Do the trimming as soon as possible. It’s always best to perform needed pruning just prior to new plant growth. Be safe by hiring a professional to do work in the upper portions of the tree.

Q: Can we grow edible ginger in Central Florida? How do we get started and what care is needed?

(Courtesy of Tom MacCubbin)

A: Get ready to grow the ginger you need starting this spring as the weather warms. Edible ginger grows vigorously from fresh root pieces known as rhizomes, obtained from grocery or specialty food stores. Plant in containers or garden soils enriched with compost or others forms of organic matter. Space the ginger portions about 12 inches apart or one or two pieces to a large container. Keep moist and fertilize monthly with a vegetable garden product. Ginger grows best in filtered sun to light shade. Plants grow to about 4 feet tall with narrow leaves, and infrequent but exotic flowers, almost like small, greenish-yellow orchids. The stalks of ginger plants die during winter in cooler locations. Thick tubers can be removed as needed with major harvests made during late summer or fall.

Q: My lawn is starting to recover from the cold, but I see lots of weeds among the green. When can I put a weed-and-feed on my St. Augustine?

March in the Garden for Central Florida

A: When the grass is growing, so are the weeds. There is no better time than now to make the combined herbicide and fertilizer application. Do make sure your weeds are listed on the product’s label and apply it as instructed for your lawn type. Weed-and-feed products do a good job of controlling many broadleaf weeds but leave most grassy- and sedge-type weeds unaffected. So don’t expect complete control of your lawn weed problems. If weeds persist after the treatments have them identified at your local University of Florida Extension Center and ask for the recommended controls that can eliminate them from your lawn.

Santone was promoted last December despite an internal investigation finding she violated agency policy two months earlier.

A recently promoted Kissimmee police lieutenant turned herself in Thursday for allegedly accessing a surveillance video without authorization, months after an internal investigation into the matter initially recommended no criminal charges.

Lt. Lacey Santone, recognized as the 2024 “sergeant of the year” last May, was charged with “two related computer crimes,” the Kissimmee Police Department announced Thursday night in a news release.

She was promoted late last year despite an internal investigation finding she violated agency policy in October, which records show stemmed from an emailed complaint that she inappropriately accessed video of former Deputy Chief Wilson Muñoz being escorted out of headquarters after being fired.

Muñoz, terminated after declining to pursue a criminal case in an excessive force incident involving disgraced officer Andrew Baseggio, has since been reinstated.

The Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute Santone at the time, according to an internal report, which stated no statute would have been violated without a corroborating witness. It wasn’t until an unnamed officer came forward that it was discovered Santone had recorded footage on her cellphone and shared it, leading to the criminal charges.

“The actions of the officer who came forward and those who cooperated in the investigation demonstrated our department’s core values and underscore the integrity and professionalism we expect, including holding each other accountable to maintain public trust,” Chief Charles Broadway said in a statement.

Santone was issued a written reprimand after the internal investigation found she inappropriately accessed agency surveillance footage. She was promoted to lieutenant on Nov. 14 based on her previous performance at the department and in the community, with a ceremony taking place Dec. 2.

As for Muñoz, KPD spokesperson Alibeth Suarez said city officials are “currently engaged in a good-faith discussion … about his continued employment.”

The department has been heavily scrutinized since Baseggio, handed a nine-month jail sentence in October, was accused brutally beating a civilian and attempting to sabotage the subsequent investigation. The resulting criminal probe exposed a cover-up at the highest levels of the department, including then-Chief Betty Holland, who resigned ahead of Baseggio’s indictment by a grand jury.

Several others were either suspended, fired or forced to resign, though many of the suspensions have since been reversed. Muñoz’s role in initially not criminally investigating Baseggio was the final piece of the investigation, but his firing was reversed after it was appealed.

Amid the lingering fallout, Broadway, billed as a reformer during his tenure as chief of police in Clermont, was brought in to rebuild KPD’s image.

On Friday, no records pertaining to Santone’s criminal case were immediately available on the Osceola County court’s website.

Capa at the Four Seasons Orlando is the Critic's Choice for Best Spanish in the 2026 Orlando Sentinel Foodie Awards. See who the readers picked.

Capa is eligible for a wealth of wins in the Orlando Sentinel Foodie Awards. Its 17th-floor patio is an unparalleled al-fresco opportunity. It’s atop one of this tourism capital’s poshest resorts. It’s got killer steak. But it’s also Spanish. And if you’ve ever taken the elevator to the top of the Four Seasons to sample the acorn-fed Jamón Ibérico or paprika-dusted patatas bravas or pan con tomate or (deep breath) paella, you’ll know well why this Michelin-starred venue qualifies in this category, as well.

Jaleo, of course, goes without saying, but I’ll go ahead and say it. If you can’t have your gin and tonic in San Sebastian, you might as well have it at Disney Springs and “Basque” in the delights of José Andrés’ beautiful Orlando outpost. And Columbia, with its incredible history here in Florida, is a classic in Celebration, as well as its other locations throughout the Sunshine State.

Briskets BBQ, with locations in Oviedo and Chuluota, is the Critic's Choice for Best Barbecue in the 2026 Orlando Sentinel Foodie Awards. See who the readers picked.

The quest goes on for tip-top barbecue in the metro, a tall order, because these three titans are tough to beat. For now, I’m sticking with these, which give Q fans options all across the metro.

First up, a big congrats to Briskets BBQ! Not only have they managed to hang onto their cute lil’ shack in Oviedo following a bit of a struggle, they’ve expanded, too. A new Chuluota location has helped widen their Seminole County footprint, and their menu, which now offers country breakfasts and other new items along with their impressive roster of traditional meats, sides and homemade desserts. The footprint in Oviedo has changed a bit, but the quality Q they’re slinging here hasn’t.

Congrats, too, to Smokemade Meats + Eats, which landed a Michelin recommendation in 2025, but the city’s known that honor was well deserved for quite some time. Mohawk, meanwhile, has cultivated enough of a following since their win last year to end up in the Readers’ Choice finals, too. This mobile outfit’s star is rising. I can’t say I’m surprised.

Critic’s Choice

Winner: Briskets BBQ Shack & Grill, 298 Geneva Drive in Oviedo, 407-542-3201 or Barbecue & Country Kitchen, 640 S. County Road 419 in Chuluota, 407-542-7935; brisketsbbq.com

Runners-up: Mohawk Smokehouse, pop-up and Smokemade Meats + Eats in Orlando

Tratto Avalon Park in Orlando is the Critic's Choice for Best Pizza in the 2026 Orlando Sentinel Foodie Awards. See who the readers picked.

If I’d had more than just one visit to Tratto Modern Italian this time last year, I’d likely be handing partners Mabel Muñoz and Alvaro Ramirez a consecutive Best Pizza win in 2026.

That said, I am happy to hand them the tiara today with one hand, while taking a beautifully crisp slice of their mortadella-laden Detroit-style handiwork with the other.

I was in the mood for what my brother has long called “marshmallow bologna” on my most recent visit to Tratto, and their mortadella and pesto offering satisfied this craving with aplomb (and a ridiculous frico that Michigan-born pizza pros would envy).

Thin-crust here, too, is a wonder. Munoz is a dough whisperer. I eat these slices backwards. Every single time.

If I had any notes at all for these two young restaurateurs, it would be to add seating to their unused counter space, so folks like me could enjoy the show while waiting for/devouring the premier pies they’re slinging. I’d never sit anywhere else.

Rounding out the lineup, Nuri’s Tavern’s midwestern-style pies are also a wonder of science and art (don’t miss their mushrooms, no matter what else you want on your pizza) and proving that the Avalon Park/Waterford Lakes area is now a pizza hotbed, Pasquale’s at Eastwood scratches the New York-style itch in sublime fashion. New-wave styles are delightful (I love all good pizza!), but basic is beautiful. This is a neighborhood gem.
