From Generation to Generation - Decoy Carving

Illinois decoy carvers have been documented as far back as the nineteenth century. The decoys are used in hunting, to bring live fowl closer to the hunter. However, cheaper, plastic decoys have become more popular and this significant tradition of carving became more threatened. Today, it is carvers such as Patrick Gregory who have worked to preserve this carving tradition—not only to make beautiful decoys to be displayed, but also for use in the field. Join us tonight for a presentation and demonstration of this unique craft with Patrick Gregory. From Generation to Generation: Folk Arts of Illinois was produced by Company of Folk with partial support by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency and the National Endowment for the Arts. Civil War Field Embalming: A Demonstration of Period Technique

Jon Austin will present a first-person presentation in a style of a 19th century medical school lecture, using a civil war re-enactor as a visual aid. This program is made possible with support from the Illinois Humanities Council. This program is in celebration of the National Library of Medicine's Traveling Exhibition Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War for viewing July 6th through August 15th. This exhibition was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health. This event is also being produced through a partnership with the Illinois Humanities Council. (Outreach Services Program)
