Recently, I got to go to Kevin Garrett's American tour kickoff concert in support of his new album, Hoax. It was a mesmerizing show, and he very kindly granted me an interview afterwards. Here's an excerpt of the full article on The Key.

"Like love, there’s a duality to Kevin Garrett’s music. It’s both intensely personal, and somehow universal in its sadness. That’s what makes it even more moving when experienced live. At the end of our interview, I ask him if he’s a sad person, and he easily admits he is. I follow up, and ask him how he feels about sharing his emotions with fans, who also have intense feelings about this music. “I think towards the front row tonight I saw a couple people, when I got to certain songs, get sad. That’s not mission accomplished, but it’s like, let’s do this. Let’s feel, together. Because, I think we bottle it up too much. As hard as it is, it’s helpful and healthy to just get through it, let it go, and try and get through the next song in one piece.” Maybe everyone in attendance was nursing some private heartbreak, but sadness together is somehow less sad.

Kevin Garrett’s music has been described as “odd soul.” In a time where people report feeling lonely more than ever before, perhaps some “odd soul” that recognizes basic, human, shared struggles like love and self-doubt is exactly what we need."

I was specifically trying to tweak and perfect a recipe in which you substitute applesauce for some of the vegetable oil to essentially make a low fat zucchini bread. This is tricky to balance, because it also adds sugar. However, an added benefit is that it makes a wonderfully moist bread. After months of experimenting, I think I finally figured it out. I took a loaf to a baby birthday party last month, and it got rave reviews. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

***Yields 2 short loaves or 1 full loaf***
Low Fat Applesauce Zucchini Bread
***Wet ingredients***
1 c Sugar
1 c Applesauce
3 Eggs
1 tsp Vanilla extract
2 tsp Apple cider vinegar
1 tsp Lemon juice
1/2 c Vegetable Oil

***Spices***
(I recommend doing this to your own taste. I like a heavily spiced bread, so this is what I do.)
2 tsp Cinnamon
1 tsp Cardamon
2 tsp Lemon zest
1 tsp Grated ginger
1 tsp Salt

1 tsp Baking powder
2 tsp Baking soda
3 c Flour
2 Large zucchinis or 3 smaller zucchinis grated

Grate the zucchinis. You should aim for roughly 2 to 3 cups worth of grated zucchini.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Grease two bread loaf tins with butter.

In a large bowl, briskly mix together all the wet ingredients. Add the spices to taste. In a smaller bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, and baking soda together. Slowly fold the drive mixture into the wet mixture. Finally, slowly fold in the grated zucchini.

It's okay to take your time with this. It will allow the baking powder and baking soda to interact with the acidic apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. This will cause bubbles, and keep your bread from being too dense.

Pour the mixture evenly into the two bread tins. Gently spin the tins to spread and even out the mixture.

Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes, or until you can stick a tooth pick into the center of the top of the bread and pull it out cleanly. Remove from the oven and let cool on a rack. Wrap and store in the refrigerator after they reach room temperature.

I usually eat a couple slices for breakfast with low fat cream cheese. They also make a nice addition to parties and potlucks when you ice the loaves with cream cheese frosting. But really, it never seems to last long, because low fat applesauce zucchini bread also makes for an easy, healthy, on-the-go snack.

What a long, strange year it has been. I think for the county as a whole, many individual people, and definitely me. This was the hardest year of my life. It felt like everything went wrong, and no part of my life went untouched. I'll admit that ultimately impacted my listening, both in taste and time. Rather than catching up on dozens new releases every week, I found songs, albums and artists that spoke to me, and played them on repeat for hours. Having a soundtrack for you life, particularly when the journey gets tough is so essential.

Perhaps this change in listening explains why I chose to mix things up with my Best Music of the year list. Rather than the top 100 songs of year as I've done the past few years, I thought I try something new. Here's a playlist crafted with three songs from my top 10 albums of the year, plus my top 10 singles. It isn't in a ranked order. Rather, its crafted into a playlist that flows through different genres that I hope listeners with open ears will enjoy.

Plus, let's do a quick review of music trends this year!

The Other Side of Nashville

Alternative country inspired by Americana, folk, rock and roots music continued to grow influence. Though Chris Stapleton had been leading this charge, he took it easy this year, and plenty of remarkable talent took his place. Brent Cobb recorded a breakout of a sophomore release, Providence Canyon, which was produced by his cousin, Dave Cobb, who has also worked with Stapleton.

Newcomer Austin Jenckes dropped one of my favorite songs of the year, 'Ride Away', which my brother and I sang on repeat at the top of our lungs while road tripping. Excited to see what comes next for Jenckes. He definitely has chart topping potential the likes of Luke Combs.

On the pop cross over side of things, Kacey Musgraves finally got the attention she has long deserved with Golden Hour. Plus Ruston Kelly, Musgraves' husband, also made waves with Dying Star, an interesting blend of Americana, and for lack of a better descriptor, emo (I don't remotely mean that pejoratively: I love emo). Kelly was also one of my favorite live performances this year, along with Caitlyn Smith, who released an album that include tracks from a previous EP, as well as the rollicking 'Contact High' that highlights her blistering, bluesy vocal skills.

My #1 single of the year was Cam's cover of 'Palace' by Sam Smith. I almost never put covers on 'best of' lists, so you know it must be remarkably good. With the dexterity of Dolly Parton, Cam takes this pop b-side and makes it entirely her own, somehow both brassy and heart-rending ballad that embodies the universal sadness of a love lost.

There were also several established legacies in this space that released career-defining albums. Underdog bard, John Prine gave us The Tree of Forgiveness, which explores familiar stories with a wisdom that endures, due to Prine's conscientiousness, his awareness of how time passes and tempers things. Brandi Carlile crafted one of her most personal albums to date, By The Way, I Forgive You, that dove into the moments that test our love and prove it true, like becoming a new mother and reconciling with a partner after a particularly bad fight. And, super group, Pistol Annies, comprised of the genius talents of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley, released Interstate Gospel, which is 2018's answer to the award-winning Trio recordings of Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. It's exactly what a cowgirl like me, who "loves country music and broken-in boots" needs right about now.

Honorary shout outs to Brothers Osborne for their bay-side vibes sophomore release, Colter Wall for reincarnating Johnny Cash in Canada, Ashley Monroe for epitomizing heartbreak on her solo effort, Steve Moakler for being my brother's fav, I'm With Her for mastering three-part harmonies, and Ryan Hurd for writing 'Diamonds and Twine', which will be my wedding song, if I'm ever so lucky one day.

Indie Rock Grrl Power

Caught in the wave of the current feminist wave, it's no wonder that there's been a sonic out crying of intimate confessionals from lady poets with guitars. My favorite of this set was Soccer Mommy, who left NYU to focus on her blooming music career. What I love about her is that she tackles common themes of female adolescence with stark honesty. Songs about being taken for granted by boys, struggling to find your voice, and idolizing a cool girl from afar ring with truth in a way the resonates through my heart.

On my local front, the hotbed of indie and lo-fi angst that is our favorite gritty city: Philly, Kississippi is poised to take the national scene by storm. One part fuzzed out guitars, one part sparkly vocals, and one part that feeling of driving through the city after a basement show and slow rolling through stop signs every block, 'Red Lights' hints at tenderness of new love.

In this space there are a lot of honorary shout outs, and I'll be 100% honest that I'm a little embarrassed more didn't make the official list. Please, please go check out Hop Along, Phoebe Bridgers, boygenius, Lucy Dacus, Savannah Conley, Remember Sports, and Haley Heynderickx. Really I need to make a playlist dedicated just to these awesome ladies, who are taking this traditionally male-dominated genre by storm.

On the dude front, it seems that several indie rock band contenders hoped to take a page out of the Portugal. The Man playbook, and score a radio-friendly breakout single after toiling away for years on the band-in-a-Dodge-Ram-van circuit. No hate. How can I not love these jammy gems that get the crowd going? If you need a pick me up, Parquet Courts with 'Wide Awake' and Gang of Youths with 'The Heart Is A Muscle' got you.

Pop Gets Personal
Times of economic strife and political unrest are tough for pop. At some point the escapism begins to feel vapid. Can you really rage at roof top parties with your future ghost of a Bumble date, and daydream of running way to Ibeza to pop bottles in the current state of affairs? For the most part, pop took a break this year.

This was good in a lot of ways, it allowed the cream to rise to the top. Truly talented pop artists had space to make intensely personal albums, tackling topics that challenge the boundaries of the genre. The 1975 released A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, which as the title suggests is vulnerable and scathing examination of Millennial dating and the contemporary cultural landscape.

This saint of a woman took the mass shoot at her concert in England, her breakup from her "toxic" relationship with Mac Miller, and her whirlwind of a romance with Pete Davidson, and crafted it into a tour de force of an album that simultaneously sounds like a diary and a the universal experience of millions of young women navigating life and love. Voice of a generation? That might be hyperbolic, but I'm going with it. This album secures her a permanent position of pop royalty the likes of Madonna.

Honorary, shout outs to Robyn for her ongoing commitment to keep dance music smart, and Janelle Monáe for tackling similar themes at The 1975, but from yet another well-crafted alter-ego.

Sophistafunk, Aristocats, and Distinguished Dogs
In an ongoing trend of several years, thanks to Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper and others, rap and R&B continues to get more sophisticated in its approach and artistic bandwidth. Plus, ladies made 2018 a "she thang", may their reign continue long into the new year.

Cardi B slayed 2018 with Invasion of Privacy, and became the first female rapper to have multiple #1 hits. She keeps it 100% with a real-talk approach to life and dealing with sexism that resonates beyond cultural boundaries, and is empowering AF. She is a mom and an entrepreneur with a sick flow. Even if you don't like rap, I implore you to give her a listen. Likewise, if you don't know Lizzo, now is a good time to get to know her. 'Fitness' was one of a couple singles she dropped this year, but I seems like something bigger may be in the works for 2019.

I saw a lot of different deserving rap songs on other top lists, including tracks from Earl Sweatshirt, Travis Scott, Mac Miller, and Childish Gambino, but my favorite from this pack was 'The Games We Play' by Pusha T. Sonically, this album hearkens to some of the seminal rap albums of the early 2000s, but the sampling is next level, and lyrics reveal the complex reality of selling drugs and living recklessly large. It is also deliciously concise at 21 minutes long.

The Internet released their 4th studio album, Hive Mind, to much anticipated acclaim. It's a completely cohesive creation from the collective, subtly blending R&B, funk, jazz, and sparse drum tracks. It's so expertly layered that every track flows seamlessly into the next, and audio gems are discovered with every new listen.

Best New Music of 2018 ...so far...

This year has been a little crazy. I've continued to be busy settling into my new job and my new home in Philly. It's been hard to keep up with my weekly listening of new music, but I do my best to keep up with it. It's important to keep your listening fresh, and stay open to new sounds. There's always something new to discover. Even only six months into the new year, it was hard to pick my top 100 songs of the year so far. I did a lot of listening and reviewing on a long road trip to Maine to get it done. Hope you enjoy and discover something new to love!

I was unexpectedly offered a job on the other side of the country in January, and by February I had moved from Los Angeles back to Philly. It was a big step up in my career. It was also a move back towards my roots, which was a complicated mess of emotions. That said, I worked hard to keep up on my weekly new music playlists, even though I wasn't on the radio anymore. According to Spotify, I listened o 45,647 minutes, 3,854 different songs and 2,210 different artists. I hope those of you, who follow me on Spotify, enjoyed! It was certainly a year for great music. Of the thousands of different songs I listened to, I somehow managed to narrow it down to the 100 top tunes. Without further ado, here's my top musical highlights of 2017!

I sound like a 60 year-old smoker, your "fun" aunt, who sneaks you sips of peppermint Schnapps in middle school and makes the family watch her reenactment of Cabaret when she gets tipsy on holidays, like Easter. I didn't have an aunt like this growing up, but it's "fun" to imagine. Clearly all the cold medicine has made me delirious. This is why we can't have nice things... I mean... this is why I couldn't do my show this week. Anywho, I've got the next best thing for you, the Spotify playlist. Enjoy without any of my raspy inane rambling.

The opening indie pop tracks have R&B tenancies. The indie rock session in the middle waxes emo, before we get into some truly soulful stuff. We end with some electronica, but it really isn't too dancey. Hopefully this playlist can keep someone company when it's just one of those days (that a girl goes through).

Of all the sets I watched, I’ve picked my top three from each day of the festival to feature. Bonus: I took some photos that I’m rather proud of for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

Read my Desert Daze: Friday review

SUNDAY
It felt like Sunday came so fast, and it was sad to think that it was the last day of the festival. I was not at all ready to go back to L.A. As far as daily lineups went, I think Sunday was the most consistently solid. I made the most of the day by rushing back and forth between different sets with no time to take in all the other fest sights. It was hard to pick just 3 favorites to review, but here they are.

Teebs from Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label played the first half of his set solo, quietly and unassumingly sitting in an office swivel chair while twiddling dials, tapping keys, and thoughtfully bobbing his head along. Calmly lost in his own world, making beats and noises, he seemed unaware that there was an audience, though he held them spell bound with the intimacy of his craft. Occasionally he would look up and seem surprised to find himself in a large tent with ardent fans, all either completely blissed out or holding their breath. I the second half of this set, he was joined on stage by a guitarist and MNDSGN, signed to Stones Throw, on keys. Together the trio did a fairly improvisational set, vibing off each other, and making giving cues with glances and nods. Teebs was very humble, complementing the other musicians, and thanking them profusely at the end of the set.

Probably my favorite set of the entire festival was Jennylee. Jennylee gained recognition as the bassist for Warpaint before releasing a solo album on Roughtrade last year. Performing solo she played guitar for the first song, but mostly focused on vocals, backed by guitar, drums and bass. This was perfect, since it allowed her a full range of expression, dancing about the stage and occasionally balling up as she howled into the mic. At one point she slipped her hand into the waitlist of her jeans as she effortlessly gyrated across the stage, and on the next song she looked half-crazed as she writhed around and flipped off the audience. Her sound reflected this dynamism, effortless blending sexy, hip-shaking basslines and pure pissed angst. In addition to having a great voice, Jennylee ran her mic through some effects, so she was able to manipulate her vocals into interesting new noises live. Watching her work the nobs was like watching alchemy or witchcraft. Other highlights included when she invited her full-size pet poodle on stage, and he politely sat like a good boy for a couple songs, while she sang to him.

By the time Metz took to the Block Stage, the wires strung across the space in front of the stage were bedecked with sneakers that had been tied together. Clearly some bands and fans had gone hard before them. Metz may have taken that as a challenge, because as the sun set in peaceful dusky pinks and pale blue hues over the joshua trees, they slayed it. All three of the bandmates attacked each song like they had a personal vendetta against it. Their set had an infectious intensity unseen yet at the fest, and it immediately incited a huge pit. While the music blasted with pure power of thrashy drums and wailing guitars, in the breaks between songs they talked about being thrilled to be there and gave a long list of thankyous and shoutouts. They closed with an extended blowout of a finish that brought the crowd to a fever pitch. As the dust settled and the fest goers drifted off to other stages, you could see the tired satisfaction on everyone’s faces.

Of all the sets I watched, I’ve picked my top three from each day of the festival to feature. Bonus: I took some photos that I’m rather proud of for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

SATURDAY
The Saturday schedule for Desert Daze started around noon, but things really didn’t pick up steam until the late afternoon, which was probably best for all the revelers that were out partying among the cacti until the wee hours. Here’s my review of the top three acts I saw that day.

The first artist I caught was Ryley Walker, who I had really wanted to see after falling in love with ‘Roundabout’, the single off his new album Golden Sings That Have Been Sung. I’ve described him as if Mac Demarco and Iron & Wine had a kid that really wanted to join jazz band in high school. His live performance was captivatingly endearing and attracted a sizable crowd even though many people in the audience had clearly never heard of him before. Walker was backed by a double bass, keys and drums, which were all wielded by talented musicians, who joyfully and vibed off each other. Walker seemed a little shy and awkwardly cracked self-deprecating jokes. When someone in the crowd shouted “I love you man,” Walker quickly retorted “I wish my dad had said that more then maybe I wouldn’t be playing this shitty acoustic guitar.” Later in the set he said, “Just tuned to drop D, so you know shits about to get real…that’s because my mom wouldn’t let me get a NOFX CD.” The crowed loved it, laughing and basking in jazzily improvised extended versions of songs. Walker and his band just looked thrilled and stunned, like they couldn’t believe they were there. The whole thing made for one of the best sets of the entire festival, in this writer’s humble opinion.

In a completely different vein, I caught The Coathangers, an all-girl punk revival band, later in the afternoon. Julia Kugel, a.k.a. Crook Kid Coathanger, who plays guitar, has impressively malleable vocal stylings, mimicking everyone from Elvis to The B52s. Likewise, the band’s songs reference a fabulous variety of punk-related genres and bands, while driving beats smooth things out into a cohesive signature sound. The trio had a lot of chemistry and camaraderie on stage, which incited a bunch of girls to open up a mosh pit in front of the stage #ladybonersforever! Though The Coathangers were all wearing matching cutup t-shirts with their band’s name sloppily handwritten in sharpie, it wasn’t all throwback and twee. When they screamed “Fuck You!” it was easy to believe they meant it. Clearly The Coathangers are well versed in unapologetically slaying it.

Saturday night closed with Godspeed! You Black Emperor headlining. I’ve seen them a couple times before, and I knew that nothing could top seeing them a few years ago in a starlit field in Big Sur. Still, their performance at Desert Daze was quite solid, and definitely made my top three for the day. The largest festival stage set up gave the performance more of an orchestral feel then when I’ve seen them in smaller, more intimate settings, but they had the same black & white found footage-looking background visuals. There was minimal stage lighting, but they played under the light of a full super moon, which certainly added to the ambiance. They played a lot of their two most recent albums, Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress and Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend, but toward the end of the set they played ‘Storm’, a twenty two minute opus of a piece, which is also probably the best known work. The crowd of tired worshipers slowly head banging along exuded their appreciation, and Godspeed! You Black Emperor reciprocated by playing well past their scheduled end of their set at 1:30am and even obliged to an encore at the end. It was truly the perfectly blessed and meditative end to the second day of Desert Daze.

Described as a “not a ‘music festival’, but a ‘festival of music’”, this was the fifth year that Desert Daze was held and the first year that it was three days long instead of one day. In many ways this stage in the evolution of the festival made for an ideal experience. The organizers, Moon Block Party, were experienced enough that all the logistics ran smoothly, and since this was the first year at this scale, it was not overly hyped or too crowded.

The lineup was eclectic, featuring Washed Out, Primus, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, and Television as headliners with Andrew WK and Saul Williams leading the opening and closing ceremonies respectively. The diversity of the artists attracted a wide range of attendees from old sundrenched hippies to post metal heads to Angeleno revivalist hipsters to burners preaching PLUR. To see all these people in one placed, decked to the nines, and exuding positive vibes to all was at a bare minimum entertaining people-watching and at some higher level inspiringly lovely.

With 3 stages and overlapping sets, it would have been impossible to see all the artists. So, I made a playlist on Spotify with a song from every artist to help me review and prioritize in advance. Of all the sets I watched, I’ve picked my top three from each day of the festival to feature. Bonus: I took some photos that I’m rather proud of for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

FRIDAY
This was definitely the indie pop chillwave day of the fest with Toro Y Moi, Washed Out, and Deerhunter headlining.

Toro Y Moi is one of several artistic facets of Chaz Bundick, who was also playing on Saturday as Les Sins, his more pop producer type persona. As Toro Y Moi, Bundick quickly got the large crow grooving’. Though it was the first day of the fest, and there were still lines of people picking up tickets after battling L.A. traffic out to the desert, the good vides were already in abundance. Never one to shy away from back catalog (in 2012 he released June 2009, an unreleased album of very early recordings that had a very different sound), Bundick played his best work from his 6 albums and 2 Eps, including ‘Talamak’, ‘New Beat’, ‘Rose Quartz’, and ‘Buffalo’. The intimate camaraderie between Bundick and his band seemed to permeate from the stage and into sizable crowd in attendance, who clamored for an encore.

I had seen Toro Y Moi live several times before, but I had never seen Washed Out. I tried to keep my excitement and expectations at a reasonable level as I waited for his set to start, but I was buzzing with anticipation. Turns out Washed Out, a.k.a. Ernest Greene, is every bit as devastatingly charming as my wildest day dreams had imagined. He seemed truly humbled and honored that ardent audience had assembled to hear him play. Though Washed Out had not played live in over a year, Greene and his band still killed it, switching out instruments between five people and at one point blending four synths together. Before playing ‘New Theory’, he shared that the reason they hadn’t been playing shows was that he had been holed up recording and was almost ready to release a new album. Huge news given that since Paracosm dropped in 2013 there’s only been one single released. Now I really can’t contain my excitement!

Deerhunter finished the evening and frontman Bradford Cox proved once again that he is a consummate performer. He emerged from the shadows clothed all in grey, including an oversized windbreaker with a deep hood that concealed his face in shadows. The stage lighting made it a little hard to tell, but I think his face and hands may have been painted grey as well. This aesthetic was at odds with their more upbeat songs, but Cox double downed on the theatricality of his performance and played to the crowd, not showing his face until almost halfway through the set. Deerhunter played a number of their better known songs, including ‘Revival’, but Cox kept it weird by announcing that he had peed down his leg a little and ostentatiously inviting a woman on stage, who he claimed was his sister, Hannah. With both of these casual comments, it was almost impossible to tell if he was serious of not. Though it was past midnight and people were clearly fading, the band stepped up the energy as the night went on and was able to rope the audience back in with sheer solid talent and force of will.
