I just thought of a good business idea

make anti-anti-tank rocket boats, and make safety-for hire escort business (no, not THAT kind of escort) off of east africa

russian ships full of tanks, a giant oil tanker... now a iranian massive cargo ship, and a thai fishing boat... 8 ships in 2 weeks... when will the world say "enough is enough" and hunt these guys down? dismantle somalia? since when did people become such pansies? I could understand this happening in the caribean in the 19th century... but in an age of airplanes, fighter jets, apache helicopters, remotely controlled rockets and missile - how can captain jack sparrow still make a living so easily?

why are the major US auto-makers begging for money? this makes me sick

they deserve to be squashed by foreign competition and rebuild themselves in a more efficient manner

when Honda gets a ton of money in profit, they invest it in research to keep their company on top.

when Ford gets a bunch of money, the executives pat each other on the back and give the money to each other to buy their umpteenth summer vacation home.

and all those workers can enjoy the same type of work in a Kia, Honda, or maybe even a Tata plant - making smaller, more efficient cars

or maybe work on making American high-speed railways and more advanced metropolitan subway systems.

it really boggles me why people haven't done anything sooner.

Here is a simple economic literacy test, directed particularly to those who believe that we can get rich by “greening” the American economy.

Jonah Goldberg has proposed “scrapping much of the interstate highway system, replacing it with a massive series of tunnels”. The benefits of this program would include –

gainful employment for millions of Americans. . . .
the wholesale scrubbing of auto-generated car exhaust from the air (I’d have someone create really cool air filters for every tunnel). . . .
the aesthetic improvement of the landscape as there would be fewer highways cutting across America's vistas

. . . as well as some others that may not have been intended with absolute seriousness (such as “a new existential enemy — the morlocks and/or molemen — to help galvanize our civilization and help us find common cause with our current surface enemies”).

The test question is this: If the idea of abandoning the present highway system and constructing a new one from scratch is economically preposterous, would it not remain preposterous if one substituted “existing power plants” for “interstate highway system” and “windmills and solar power collectors” for “tunnels”?

Those who are perplexed by this conundrum may find hints in the famous Petition of the Candlemakers.

Летом многие ужасно бухтели, за что УПЦ МП наградила певицу Тину Кароль церковным орденом
посмотришь ее клипы (в сети имеются) - и впрямь непонятно
Вот Блаженнейший Владимир (а вроде он лично ходатайствовал о присвоении ордена) объяснил, в чем дело

Почему именно Савл? Наверное, многие задумывались над этим вопросом. Почему садист и гонитель христиан был удостоен обращения через непосредственное общение с Господом Иисусом Христом?
Как мне кажется, именно из-за своего неравнодушия, своей, если хотите, религиозной ярости. Савл был классическим религиозным ФАНАТИКОМ, устремленным к служению Богу, пусть неправильно им понимаемому. Здесь можно вспомнить и строки Апокалипсиса о Лаодикийской церкви ("...если бы ты был холоден или горяч..."). Савла спасло вот это самое неудержимое стремление служить Богу так, как он это понимал. Савл понял, что главное в этой жизни, но до времени не знал, где оно находится. Потому Бог не дал свидетельство о себе какому-нибудь спокойному, незлому "хорошему человеку" из иудеев, со стороны наблюдавшему за переполохом, вызванным Воскресением Христовым.
И я решил - вот есть, например, националисты и всякого рода народные освободители. Они, конечно, истину не видят, но Святым Духом им дан некий дар - заботиться о соплеменниках. Главное - они не равнодушны. Нужно развить этот дар и через него скорректировать всего человека и направить его к Богу. Одного я не учел. Савл был РЕЛИГИОЗНЫМ фанатиком. Наши же националисты и народные освободители, хотя и фанатики, но фанатики, уткнувшиеся носом в землю - в Россию, в нехорошую власть, в свободу-равенство-братство - это уж кто во что горазд. Их проблема в том, что они утыкаются во второстепенное, не видя главного (хотя очень многие исповедают Православие). Не имея жажды угождения Богу - не людям, не народу, никому кроме Бога, общения с Богом, соединения с Богом, они, сами того не понимая, блуждают во тьме и не могут поднять голову, чтобы увидеть свет зовущей оторваться от земли Вифлеемской звезды. Они не понимают, что нужно быть не патриотом и православным, и даже не православным и патриотом, а нужно быть патриотом, потому что православным.
В этой связи, а также, имея хотя и не большой, но достаточно позитивный опыт миссии среди тех же мусульман, вынужден пересмотреть свои взгляды на перспективы миссии среди различных сегментов.

Я очень часто говорю об единственной правде, и меня периодически спрашивают, что это такое, в чём она состоит.
Это действительно вопрос необыкновенной важности. Может быть, самый главный в жизни каждого человека.
Несомненно то, что когда делается такое утверждение – об универсальности какого-либо явления, основание у данного утверждение только одно – идея Единого Бога.
Единый Бог, силою Которого и живёт всё, что живо – это и есть та самая правда, которая одна.
Но вот что любопытно – даже этого признания недостаточно, чтобы ответить на означенный в начале этого текста вопрос.

Ведь в Бога, Который Един, верят, например, иудеи, но значит ли это, что иудаизм также может быть для нас тем, что составляет единственную правду? Конечно, нет. Потому что «бог» там не таков, в которого верим мы. Ведь там нет Христа, а «единый бог» является причиною и источником зла.
Вот, в частности, из этого и возможно понять главное – меру, признак, эталон.

Признак Бога, мера, которой Он познаётся, универсальный эталон – это Христос, а также равнозначное Ему понятие чистоты.
Без последнего не обойтись. Потому что и Христа возможно исказить, изолгать. С чистотой это сделать сложнее.

Чистота – это целомудрие. Это скромность и бескорыстие, самоотверженность и самоотречение. Это искренность и верность.
Один англичанин когда-то сказал об этом так:

«...белый – это цвет; не отсутствие цвета, а определенный, сияющий цвет, яростный, как багрянец, и четкий, как чернота... белое – самый настоящий цвет.
Добродетель – не отсутствие порока, не бегство от нравственных опасностей; она жива и неповторима, как боль или сильный запах.
Милость – не бесхребетность; она конкретна и ярка, словно солнце; либо вы ее знаете, либо нет.
Целомудрие – не воздержание от распутства; оно пламенеет, как Жанна д'Арк.
Бог рисует разными красками, но рисунок Его особенно ярок (я чуть не сказал – особенно дерзок), когда Он рисует белым...»

Если в чём бы то ни было хотя бы отчасти присутствует несовершенное – это уже не чистота.
Чем больше нечистого, тем дальше существующее отстоит от собственного Образца, тем оно испорченнее и ближе к гибели.
Таков критерий необходимой и неизбежной для человека оценки происходящего с ним в продолжение всей его жизни.

Разумеется, главное, с чем необходимо соотносить названную меру, это собственная жизнь человека. Соответственно, единственной её (человеческой жизни) целью может быть только святость, только совершенство, подобное Божественному: «Итак, будьте совершенны, как Отец ваш небесный».

Вот, что значат Христос и чистота.
Именно это и есть единственная правда.

Конечно, подобное понимание требует своего дальнейшего развития, и оно очевидно:
за указанным неизбежно следует понимание, что несоответствие единственной правде это уже искажение, порча. И что каждый шаг, каждый поступок человека это движение к правде или от неё, и последнее – это дегенерация, т.е. вырождение, движение к смерти.
А вот единственный должный ответ на это – искреннее раскаяние при безусловном признании неприемлемости и мерзости порчи.
Именно на этих основах утверждено в нашем мире христианство.

Только понимая это, мы способны понять и природу того, что противоположно единственной правде – антихристианства, ожидающего своего предельного воплощения в страшную эпоху Конца Времён.

Признаки Последних Времён можно было увидеть, наверняка, почти в любом обществе и почти в любое время всемирной истории последних 2 000 лет,
а вот наступление этой эпохи обуславливается их распространённостью, общим количеством сообщивших себе эти признаки человеческих душ и умов.
При этом судить о такой распространённости мы не в состоянии; точнее, о её достаточности, о её мере. Полнота знания здесь недоступна.

Мы в состоянии лишь видеть частность. И указывать, соответственно, способны и должны именно на неё, по этим словам:
«Знаешь признаки антихристовы – не сам один помни их, но всем сообщай щедро» (Св. Кирилл Иерусалимский).

Так каковы же эти признаки?

Интересно, что, скажем, откровенное богоборчество, неприязнь или даже ненависть к христианству и самой фигуре Христа, презрение к Нему, отвержение Его, которые проявляют безбожники или иудеи, в число признаков Конца Времён не входят:
это откровенное, явное зло, и если большинство людей способно понимать, что это именно так, значит, они обладают и способностью видеть его (зла) противоположность.

Такая способность свидетельствует о «верном складе» человеческих ума и сердца, а также позволяет человеку сделать главное, ради чего он приходит в этот мир – совершить правильный выбор между ясно различаемыми началами.

Пока большинство людей способны к этому – Конца Времён не будет.

Здесь можно задать вопрос – да как вообще возможно потерять такую способность различения добра и зла, как такое может быть, и как это должно выглядеть?

Вопрос этот совершенно справедливый, и могу сказать, что ответить на него действительно очень трудно или невозможно – если рассуждать об этом только теоретически.
А вот если увидеть воочию образец этого – тогда и получим достаточно ясный и прямой ответ.

Прежде чем показать этот образец, скажу, что, наверное, никогда бы и не узнал о нём, не будь вот этого самого средства, с помощью которого до вас, дорогие читатели, и дошли эти мои слова – не будь этой самой всемирной сети.
Как бы по-другому я узнал о человеке, живущем за тысячи от меня километров в далёкой заморской стране и произносящем такие удивительные вещи:

«Вы, кстати, верно подметили то, что обычно игнорируется:
второй приход Христа теоретически вполне может быть именно тем, первым приходом Машиаха - приходом не скрытым, а во всей славе; т.е. противоречие может быть мнимым».
Отсюда.

Чтобы было понятнее, нужно пояснить, кто произносит эти слова.

Эти слова принадлежат еврею по происхождению, во времена Союза сменившему множество мест работы, нигде не ужившемуся, в конце концов эмигрировавшему с Украины в Северную Америку.
Говорю это для того, чтобы возможно было как-то понять, каков механизм появления подобных людей. Возможно, или даже наверное, самому этому человеку будет болезненно читать это, но иначе невозможно – ведь человек этот самым удивительным и откровенным образом представляет пример существа с перевёрнутым, вывороченным наизнанку сознанием.
Внутренний стержень, делающий человека человеком и на котором крепятся точные, ясные представления о чёрном и белом, добре и зле – здесь, кажется, совершенно изжит.
Каким образом могло это произойти – могу только предполагать, и сделаю это позже, теперь же укажу на главные, характерные признаки явления.

Как видно из первой цитаты, Христос здесь не отвергается.
Он принимается за кого-то совершенно другого, за Ему противоположного.
Ведь

Если Творец есть, то любые монады, демиурги и прочие товарищи суть его проявления, его маски, его руки; теодицея получается более продолженной, только и всего; это все Он же, только сокрыт чуть более.
Так странно, что это надо доказывать.

Является ли Тот, Кто общался на Синае, САМИМ Творцом, как верят иудеи, или только монадой планетарного масштаба, как верил Д.Андреев, или не очень умелым (а то и злоумышленным) демиургом, как верят христиане-гностики - мне, вот честное слово, как-то не особенно интересно. Да какая нам-то с Вами разница, кроме теоретической?!

Конечно, можно посвятить этому бесплотному выяснению жизнь, и не одну, но, по-моему, лучше посвятить ее, скажем, воспитанию своих детей в духе добра :^)*

И они тоже принимаются за что-то другое, совершенно нормальное, приемлемое.
Единственная правда не признаётся, её не существует, ей отвечают безоговорочным неприятием.

«Так вот, для меня атеист - тоже верующий (отсутствие Бога - тоже Бог)».

…Впрочем, не вижу беды и в атеизме - ПОКА ОН НЕ ВОИНСТВУЮЩИЙ!
Вообще все разговоры типа: "Бог есть! - Бога нет!" - мне напомианют разговор людей за завтраком: "Будем завтракать? - Не будем завтракать!". И они не замечают, что уже завтракают.

…Только не забывайте, что с точки зрения атеиста слеп верующий.
А с точки зрения Бога, как мне кажется, оба немного смешны.

…Среди атеистов, кстати, не так уж мало бывших верующих, и это нормальный процесс. Человек вчера не тот, что сегодня.
Вчера он былпреисполнен благодарности к Творцу за то, что он может любить, творить, обнимать своего ребенка, а сегодня вдруг задумался: а почему должно быть так, что мой ребенок и вообще любой близкий человек может быть у меня отнят в следующую секунду? почему Бог устроил так, если Он есть Любовь?!. а завтра... и т.д.
Отрицание отрицания, знаете ли.
Отсюда.

Тошнотворная демагогия – ещё один признак.
Она оправдывает всё подряд, что только удовлетворяет запросам искажённых ума и души.

«В данном случае, не говоря уже о том, что отец сексуальной революции не В.Райх…, традиционализм совершенно не обязательно есть нечто лучшее. Человеческие жертвы - тоже традиция с весьма почтенным возрастом, как и каннибализм, промискуитет, инцест, храмовая проституция и т.д., и т.п. То есть нет внятных доказательств, что традиционалисты в браке живут более правильно или более хорошо, или более любят друг друга.
И если Вы не изменяете любящему Вас человеку, то тем самым Вы изменяете тому, с кем могли бы изменить этому, и еще неизвестно, кого Вы делаете более несчастным…

…можно жить в групповом браке и верно любить всех своих партнеров. Люди - они разные, и подогнать всех под одну гребенку не получится».

И, наконец, откровеннейшее признание, соль того, о чём говорится, суть человека Конца Времён:
На практике (что, впрочем, признают и они) тьма и свет давно смешаны. Каждый раз, когда мы провозглашаем: вот она, тьма! - мы рискуем ударить по себе. Ибо где больше тьмы, чем в нас самих, если уж на то пошло?

Понять, увидеть источник таких взглядов отчасти позволяют другие слова этого человека:

С точки зрения иудаизма, нет Силы, отличной от Бога.
"Отец Зла" - всего лишь некая условность, одна из масок Творца, примерно так; Зло - лишь сокрытие Добра. Впрочем, тут возможны самые разные подходы, и ни один из них не может быть назван точно описывающим ситуацию.

Итак, иудаизм.
Вера в «единого творца», которому чужд Христос.
Но «перестроившийся». С «любыми монадами, демиургами и прочими товарищами».
Т.е. с «христом», который вместе с прочими уже «суть его проявления, его маски, его руки»...

Вот такой удивительный образец.
Поразительно откровенный и очевидный, несомненный в своём неожиданном проявлении.
Как будто сошедший со страниц трудов св. Отцов, писавших о Конце Времён и его признаках в человеческих сердцах.

First this specific got my attention: 'Robyn learned the story of St. Nicholas, the Turkish bishop who became a symbol of anonymous gift-giving by providing dowries to three destitute sisters. When Robyn shared the story of St Nicholas with her children, she was able to encourage them to focus their gift-giving on those who were really in need at Christmas and remember the One who gave us the greatest gift of al—Christ our Saviour. The whole family volunteered to serve Christmas dinner at a local homeless shelter, and they bought a goat for a poor family in Ethiopia. “It was our most satisfying Christmas ever,” she said.'

I must say that the first thing that struck me about it was the anachronism of saying that St Nicholas was a Turkish bishop -- it's a bit like saying that King Arthur was an English king.

And the second thing that struck me about it is that the Hallmark festivals have already freed me a long time ago. Well, that and Tom Lehrer's song

Relations sparing no expense'll
send some useless old utensil
or a matching pen and pencil
just the thing I need, how nice.

It doesn't matter how sincere it is
nor how heartfelt the spirit

what's important is the price.

Being urged to buy presents and send cards for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day and all sorts of other days has cured me of buying Christmas cards as well. It just became too much of a good thing -- for the greetings card industry, that is.

My mother-in-law used to send Christmas cards to all sorts of friends and neighbours. She came across one card which was much too nice for the rather vague acquaintances who were next on her list, so she decided to send it to her sister instead. She'd already sent them one, so she signed that one "Gilbert, Effie and the twins" just to mystify her.

But nowadays the greetings card has been replaced by the blog, and that's available all year. Who needs the prepackaged sentiments of the doggerel in a commercial greetings card when you can say it yourself in a blog?

It's no longer "You send me a card and I'll send one to you". It's "You read my blog and I'll read yours."

And instead of making lists of all the people who sent you Christmas cards last year so that you can send them one this year, we have MyblogLog and BlogCatalog to let you know exactly who's been reading your blog so that you can reciprocate. Eat your heart out, Hallmark!

On complexity

JCW, thanks for writing in again. You asked about "complexity" in the post above. I suggested, if you remember, that complexity is required in ethics and politics. But this complexity should not be confused with ambiguity. Complexity, as the opposite of simplicity, requires the hard work of wisdom, which is never genetic, and always comes by hard work and not just by hard knocks. Many people are called through experience. Few are chosen through meaning.

My concern for complexity rises mainly in the area of politics. Most Christians who read the Bible are understandably attracted to the radical social leveling that obtains only in the human nature established in Christ. But in politics this leveling does not obtain and should not be sought. Here, there is a government ordained by God to restrain evil. There is also an inevitable social stratification which is compelled by sin and death, and is accommodated by the Law (which is fulfilled by the Gospel, and not negated by it).

The rich and the powerful thus we will always have with us, until the Lord returns and makes all things new. In this vale of moral shadows, I am poorer than many, I am richer than most.

And the rich and the powerful will always float upward to power and authority. This is the way of the gentiles and will always be. Besides, the poor are historically bad at government (e.g., Munster, Venezuela). Worse yet are poor intellectuals (especially those romantic "lovers of mankind" who attempt to re-define mankind as something else) who usually start out as nice liberal socialists, but end up as monsters. If you mess with human nature, you will become unnatural. "Normal," perhaps, but unnatural.

Complexity in ethical reflection is necessary in this environment, where lawlessness is a real and increasing peril, and shows up in the most innocent-looking (and jejune and naive) political statements by our friends on the religious right. The angel of light does his best work in mystification, the indolence of the righteous, which is usually experienced as headache and whimpering disillusion.

I referred to the most telling example of naive fundamentalist politics in the post above: the Christian Right complains about abortion, the destruction of embryos, hyper-socialism, termination of the aged and disabled, and the chic redefinition of aberrant sexual proclivity as conferring "minority" status – these are all issues about which I wholeheartedly agree with my right-wing heterodox friends.

But they are not-so-strangely silent, in their insouciance, about encroaching totalitarianism, consumerism, war-as-aggrandizement, environmental rapine, and hyper-capitalism: these concerns are just as Biblical, and should be just as salient -- even in such a restricted view that sola scriptura allows.

You would be hard pressed to find a fundamentalist Christian who will say a critical word about capitalism, given their multi-generational catechism that defines the Beast as a red communist for sure. If you turn the radio dial enough, late at night (or the url-bar), you can still hear the static of cheap polyester declaiming Gog and Magog at the Kremlin.

I suppose we must think of it as a gain that many "emergent" and neo-evangelical folk are becoming more consistently prophetic in their outlook. Nevertheless, it is difficult for them to experiment with these novel approaches, with all the attendant roller-coaster excitement of thinking new liberal thoughts that would make their elders blanch. I believe Frank Schaeffer documents this prurient experimentation pretty well.

But the difficulty inflicts itself right at the point of Natural Law, as you would expect. When the "neo" sort of evangelical churchpeople (can't say "churchmen" anymore) break free from the confining fundamentalistic strait-jacket of their upbringing, they willingly embrace environmentalism, civil rights, a semi-pacifism and a concern for the poor and the marginalized.

But many of them find themselves so caught up in the enthusiasm of the Democrat boutique that they load their carts with other, less defensible, wares. Into the basket goes the embrace of the homosexual re-edit of human nature, or -- I suggest -- "Anthropology 2.0." You will find the likes of Tony Campolo smack dab in this heady mix.

Also in the modern shopping basket is a tacit acquiescence to the new economy of fornication that seems to reign supreme nowadays. We shouldn't be so surprised. The surfeit of foreplay splayed out on virtual reality monitors (some of the appliances are wetware like human cerebellum) must necessarily lead to sexual activity -- and it matters little as to what sort of partner will be found as the surrogate object of this activity.

This new moral economy produces sexual activity at the earliest ages ever, surely hastening the constant advance of menarche. It also produces, or urges, serial "hookups" that precede marriage, all expressed in various forms, ranging from furtive gropings, oral agreements, to the full monty capulet-montague coupling.

And this activity enthusiastically (but silently) endorsed by church kids whose virginity is unlocked by latch-keys and whose liberation is enabled by dual-income households.

In other words, why can't someone like Palin insist on the environment and the provision of a family wage, along with her well-known (and rightly lauded) opposition to abortion? On the other hand, why can't Campolo insist on the male-ness of the priesthood and the male-and-femaleness of marriage, along with his well-known (and rightly lauded) critique of this present capitalistic war?

Why oh why is our stewardship of creation contingent upon dogmas of global warming? Is it not enough that we are asked to fast and feast, to remember the names of animals and to tend the Garden? When was this responsibility abrogated? Since when has the Creation become a monster, a mother, a mine, an asset, a construct of google-earth? Since when have we forgotten brother sun and sister moon? And danced?

These present political groupings are a bunch of rhetorical simplicities. Today's labels, like the Rhetors of old, give rhetoric a bad name, and they all deserve Socrates' fabled evil eye. He would glare at the Republicans, who are "for" the unborn (maybe). He would cast the hairy eyeball at Democrats, who assure him that they are "for" the workers (just as maybe).

These groupings are becoming increasingly meaningless. But they remain simple in their nomenclature, and therefore provide a sort of self-administered opiate of false familiarity and the worst of smug generalities.

So you asked, JCW, for some help in this necessary task of complexity? I will list a few bullets for your diversion:

Bind thou up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples … To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them (Isaias 8.16, 20). The only rock upon which the house of intellect (and culture, even secular) may be built is the Law – that is, the doctrine and anthropology of Holy Tradition. The matter of which can be leaked into general knowledge, but the truth is from there no less.
In other words, read the Bible and the Fathers.
Read history. One of the glaring negligences of the Orthodox Church is the neglect of American history. Too many official Orthodox pamphlets embrace globalization as a given. Utter, nutter, uber ugh.
Practice the political and ethical judgment that, for an Orthodox Christian, can be gained only from spiritual discernment. This discernment, in turn, can be gotten only from apatheia, which is the balance of the powers of emotion, drive, and intellect, and the cessation of the revolution of passion in the soul.
As all history begins in the nous, all demonic revolution starts in the passionate revolution of souls. Christian peace starts in the soul and is exalted in koinonia and yearns for the New Jerusalem.
Beauty is the spiral ascension of the simplicity of person artfully expressed in the complexity of society, and back again, but higher, and again and higher.
Be complex in this mortal vale but not perplexed. Work hard. Believe and trust as a child, with faith like a seed. Be innocent as doves, but be complex about the world, you know: be wise as serpents. That sounds hard and complicated to me.
But not hopeless.

Preparing for Advent

Seasons change, the world turns, and that which was old is now new again. We once thought about Depression era restrictions on our American lives as quaint, and for "those days".

Well, those days have come again for most of our fellow citizens and throughout the whole world. Now in the midst of all this economic turmoil, trust is the last thing most of us want to be lectured on, yet there it is. As it always must be. Soon we will enter the season of Advent, and connect with the Hebrew people, looking through the darkness of their lives toward a Light, shining far off, beyond their own lives. Their faith and trust in God's provision is a key element of understanding the season of Advent and the Prophecies it centers on. It makes me remember a portion of a song from long ago.

In the velvet Darkness
of the Blackest night,
burning bright,
there is a guiding Star.

No matter what,
or who you are.
There is a Light.

I was struck by an image of a Star shining in the darkness mixed with the idea of Trust, and I really connected with the idea of no matter what, our faith gives us a path, a way to go, and Jesus is always there. I don't know how, or why things happen, but they do, and it is comforting to know that Jesus is the Light in whatever darkness I find myself in.

To Feast, or not to Feast?

That is the question. So, let me give you my answer. On the appointed day of Thanksgiving: FEAST! Kill the fatted bird and FEAST!

But, if you wish to maintain the fast: Glory to God! If you wish to lessen the fast (like a church feast day falling during a fast): then enjoy your fish, wine, and oil and Glory to God! If you wish to feast with the vast majority of your neighbors, family, friends, and countrymen: kill the fatted bird and give thanks unto the Lord.

Some of you will no doubt suggest that all of this needs to be taken up with you Spiritual Father...and that's fine, I'm sure. But frankly if your Spiritual Father is dogmatically insisting on any one of these "options" I think I'd be a little concerned.

Let me give you my reasoning, FWIW, as to why I think we SHOULD or at least CAN celebrate Thanksgiving in the traditional American way. First and foremost, were it not obvious, we are Americans. Thanksgiving is one of the few traditions we still all largely celebrate together - despite an ever growing propensity for celebrating diversity. When do we ever get to celebrate unity, by the way? And we are not talking about a political holiday (of which many have been incorporated into old world Orthodox feasts), but a holiday intended to exhort us Americans to give thanks to God. (That is one of the early States proclamation...Lincoln - fittingly - would offer the first national one in 1863).

I have a hard time imagining St. Herman finding a very important tribal and family tradition amongst the Native Alaskans and then telling his converts that they must abandon it (or even portions of it) in order to satisfy the letter of the fasting law. Sow discord and disunity for the sake of avoiding meat for one day? Rather would we not expect to see our Saint baptizing the Feast? I would expect so. I mean, think about it: why do we celebrate the Nativity of Christ when we do? Because we Baptized a pagan festival. Why do we drag trees into our houses? Because we baptized a pagan practice - which still makes little sense. Amongst my Slovak family there are MANY traditions (e.g. dumping water on girls) centered around Pascha that absolutely have a pagan origin and yet have been retained. Fact is, Thanksgiving OUGHT to be an EASY celebration to baptize in comparison to hauling dying trees into our houses. (I've no doubt there are some fundamentalists - Orthodox and protestant - who refuse to have Christmas trees...and to them I say: BAH HUMBUG!)

I believe it was a visiting priest from Kenya who told us the story of a Bishop who went out to a remote village to visit a bunch of new believers. The Bishop had his usual entourage and as they all sat down for a meal they were SHOCKED to find hardly anything but meat provided. They all waited anxiously to find out what the Bishop was going to do. He blessed the food and then told his entourage in Greek: "Now it is fish." The notion that we can get around the "problem" of Thanksgiving by employing the acceptance of hospitality by seeing that we are invited to someone else's house seems to me to be profoundly disingenuous. How is this different than telling everyone in the Orthodox Church that you are now to receive the hospitality of American culture: Thanksgiving?

Consider the issue of the New Calender. Despite whatever practical reasons, in switching we now find ourselves celebrating Christmas with the majority of the people we live around and we converts have one less thing to worry about with regard to family problems and celebrations. Alas, our Old Calendar convert brethren may escape the dilemma of Thanksgiving during the Advent Fast, but they gain the bigger dilemma of western Christmas during the Advent Fast. Additionally, by adopting the new calender, Old Calenderists rightly note that we have laid waste to the Apostle's Fast - in some years it doesn't even exist at all. So, my point is, if you are going to say we should not break the Fast for Thanksgiving, then I'm thinking you ought to apply the exact same legalistic logic to the adoption of the New Calender.

Ah yes, but James, Thanksgiving has lost so much of its meaning. It's now merely an excuse to be a glutton, a drunkard, and to watch football. Well, welcome to reality! Do you reckon Christmas and Easter have not lost much of its meaning to the popular culture as well? More than that, do you doubt that were you to make a run of Lent/Pascha in the old world that you would see the exact same loss of meaning for so many people there? You suppose you might find a fair number of Greeks or Russians who did nothing with the Fast and everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) with the Feast? Don't deceive yourself, there is no great religious Feast in this world that is not diluted in its meaning to the point of becoming little more than....well...what we assume we see most Americans making of Thanksgiving. And to be fair, I have indeed seen my share of gluttony and drunkenness on Pascha in the world of convert Orthodoxy...though not so much football. We bring meaning to everything...without our input, nothing has meaning. And we may input for good or for ill.

Have you ever broken the Fast? You know, snuck a bite of cheese or chocolate at work? Ever just break down and go to Burger King during Advent? Ever seek an invitation to a non-Orthodox friends house for dinner because if you have to creatively devise one more soy, beans, and rice dish for the family you are going to literally implode into a quivering mass of PETA propaganda beaten wimpiness? I will be the first to confess that I do not keep the fast perfectly, but if anyone tells you that the goal of the Fast is to keep it perfectly then I would suggest you run, do not walk - do not pass go and do not collect $200 - to the nearest exit. Fasting is FAR more about the state of your heart than about the food you put in your mouth and as such, if you find fasting is making you into a legalist than I would advise you go and eat an entire gallon of the richest ice cream you can find...NOW! I once heard Metropolitan JONAH relate a story of an Abbott bringing ice cream to his monks during one of the Fasts...I cannot recall the details, but the moral of the story was simple: don't become a pharisee. What you eat during Lent or Advent is far less important than many other things. Anyway, my point here is simply to suggest that breaking the Fast for a good cause is in no way an innovation and I'd be far better spending my time concerning myself with the fact that I sometimes break the Fast to truly feed my own private, secret and day to day gluttony. There are many bad reasons to break the Fast, I do not believe Thanksgiving is one of them.

Can I use Thanksgiving as an excuse to do the same (feed my passions)? You bet. But I can also do the same with weekends and Feast amongst Fast days (fish, wine, and oil) and indeed the Feasts themselves.

If we are going to be the Church in America, we really need to consider what is the heart of our Traditions. Think about all the lifestyle and cultural changes we make when converting to Orthodoxy...many of us converts know already how strange we seem to others. How often we are in Church during Lent...taking time off from work during Holy Week...fasting on most Wednesdays and Fridays...vespers on Saturday night...often celebrating easter at a different times than our friends and family (ah yes the joy of our families having Easter in the midst of our Lenten Fast!) and very often adopting cultural customs surrounding various Church holidays that are utterly foreign to many of us. We embrace them and we deal with some of the problems surrounding them that can sometimes isolate us from our more popular culture, not to mention friends and family. Some will no doubt say: "Good. I want to be isolated from our predominant culture." Okay, fine...I can understand that, but we must also understand that at some point we may as well be asking gentile converts to be circumcised. It is one thing to do this with regard to our moral teachings (remember given our society today we are more and more asking a great deal of people - they would say - and I would not dream of changing a wink of THAT), but I think it is another with regard to our practical Traditions.

Is one day of fasting worth isolating ourselves from our friends, neighbors, and families? Should we not embrace this which is good in our society? Recognize it for the worth it has - or rather the worth we can impregnate it with - and celebrate it? It needn't be an occasion for drunkenness and gluttony...there should never be an occasion for such things.

Thanksgiving is a part of our predominant culture that can still be a very good thing - no, I take that back...it IS a very good thing. We ought to fully baptize it. Yes, were we an Orthodox culture at the time of the founding of this feast we would surely have chosen a different time for it...but we must deal with reality as surely as we deal with the the reality of the New Calender. Baptizing Thanksgiving has been happening already. Many Parishes offer the Akathist of Thanksgiving and I've also heard of some doing a Divine Liturgy. Why not?

We bring so many customs and traditions from Russia, Greece, the Middle East, Ukraine, etc...and they can be wonderful things that many a convert will embrace. But we are not utterly devoid of good customs here in America. Thanksgiving is full of precious memories for so many of us - heck MOST of us!

Who cannot recall the wonderful smells from Grandma's kitchen? The handing down of recipes, the formal prayers before a meal (sometimes not heard any other time in some homes), the laughing and story-telling of Thanksgivings past, "Over the river and through the woods...", some even have dinner time customs such as dropping dried corn kernels into a jar while telling everyone else about something they are thankful for this year and then the jar remains on the table during the meal as a reminder. Thanksgiving is a good thing. It is bad only to the degree that we make it bad and I simply refuse to believe that the unfortunate collision of cultural calenders suddenly renders the Feast bad or unimportant.

Good luck becoming the Orthodox Church in America if we tell converts that they must abandon or seriously curtail this wonderful American Tradition. I believe if we ever see an American Orthodox Church, it will in some way include Thanksgiving.

That's my 2 cents and I offer them without judgment to anyone who feels inclined to practice otherwise. I'd be interested to hear what you and your family will be doing.

As a side. I'm raising a couple of Turkeys for next year. The MRS has been freaked out to see the ingredient lists on store-bought turkeys. And to think, we figured it ought to say simply: Turkey.

Дорогие друзья.

Как помните постила я недавно тут фотографии из поездки в Оптину. Но это так, к слову.

Под Оптиной пустынью, в Козельском районе Калужской области, в селе Нижние Прыски добрые православные люди организовали детский приют. Дети под присмотром, воспитывают их в Православной вере, Храм под боком, в общем, всяко лучше чем по улицам бродяжничать. Дети там из разных районов есть, но это не суть важно. Их там 44 человека. Есть и мальчики и девочки от 3-х до 16 лет.
Приют ОЧЕНЬ нуждается в помощи. Очень. Поскольку это деревня, то, понятное дело, там прихожан-то две-три бабуськи, рядом Козельск с зарплатами 2500-3000 рублей. Помогать, понятное дело особо не кому. А помощь нужна. Любая посильная. Я звонила туда по этому поводу, вдруг что-то удастся собрать к Рождеству - они рады принять любую. Только одна просьба - игрушки, если игрушки - лучше развивающие и ролевые типа наборов,или куклы обычные. Не нужно мягких игрушек (потому что пылесборники большие, больше проблем а толку почти никакого) и барби тоже не нужно - по определенным причинам.
Очень нужны любые канцтовары - ручки, тетрадки, циркули (!)
Очень нужны носки-колготки,домашние тапочки, на взрослых мальчиков нет зимней обуви и шапок. Вещи они принимают любые, говорят что в размер сложно попасть, мы тут на месте уже перешьем и приспособим как надо. (От себя на всякий случай скажу, что любые любыми, но желательно, все же, в приличном стираном-глаженом состоянии, а то тоже люди, же, чтоб не стыдно отдать было).
