Little bit more than a week a go was my birthday, ant that means it’s time for this years mp3 called Höst Våg. Last years mix included songs from 80s, 90s and 00s music, but this time I’ve focused only on new wave and post punk. Ok, my first mashup is here!

I know, I know, I hate mashups! But that doesn’t stop me from making one! For a long time I’ve noticed that the song Eskimo by Wiley sound similar to the old Here’s to the Oblong Boys by Renaldo and the Loaf from 1987. Yesterday when I didn’t want to rinse any more mushrooms I felt like mashing, so I did. And here it is!

During this summer I started collecting songs for my second grime mix. But all of a sudden summer turned into fall and I started listening to other music that suited better for the fall. Most of it was old swedish rock songs and I decided to create a mix of what I listen to right now, and here it is. Enjoy!

If someone played this song and I didn’t know about it, I would have thought it was a band on Sarah records (except that they sing in swedish), perhaps The Field Mice, but no, this song was released over six years before - in Sweden! Apart from the language, the only thing that differs it from Sarah is the huge saxophone in the end. Ögon is the b-side of the Flyktförsök 7″ that was released in 1983 on Mistlur which also released more famous bands as Lolita Pop and Ebba Grön. I found the 7″ at Micke’s for 10kr ($1) which i think is a freakin’ bargain!

Also, the cover is beautiful! And the first cover printed in 3D style in sweden (you know, red and green glasses)

A few years ago I downloaded some swedish new wave from someone using Direct Connect. I dragged the music to iTunes and deleted the original files. I shouldn’t have done that. The songs had no contents in their ID-tags so all the song and band names disappeared! A tragedy because some of the songs were so extremely good. I tried to play the songs for my sister and brother and their friends who all were in to this kind of music when they were younger, but they couldn’t figure out any of the songs. Last year when I bought an LP by the bandsAtt Som and Unter den linden, one of the lost songs where on the record (which is a great album)! Well it was the same song but not the same version though. Now since I knew the band and song name, I began searching for information online and found out that the song also was put on a 7″ single by Att som, in 1981, called Svart på vit. Ok, enough of that. Let’s talk music instead.

The song is a really dark new wave song. It’s got some heavy guitars and amazing synth carpets and sounds like if Joy Division could play faster (like they originally wanted but never managed too), but it has as always, a very unique swedish sound.

I didn’t really discovered Tant Strul until just recently. Well, I’ve had a song by them on a compilation (Hjärta slå on Ny Våg), but that song didn’t appeal to me that much. Too much punk/rock. I also heard from someone that “they weren’t that good”, so I didn’t really bother to look for anything by them. But recently I came across their compilation 1980-1985 which is just so fucking amazing! OK, it has some of the mediocre punk stuff but most of it is perfect swedish new wave pop: guitars, piano, violins, keyboards etc. My two favourite songs are “Som den söndan” (anyone listened to Håkan Hellström, here’s the original, and much better) and Den knivskurne. When I listen to Den knivskurne, tons of energy builds up inside of me and I must scream or tence all my muscles to prevent me from exploding. It’s just so beautiful. As you might figured out by now, the band is swedish, and they were playing together between 1980-1985. The lead singer, Kajsa Grytt, is still doing music on her own and she has a detailed biography on her site.

My first mp3 post will be about the lovely band Shimura Curves that I found a few months ago through the splendid Fluxblog. I don’t know much about the band more than that they are all girls and based in London. According to their myspace page they are playing “pristine electro pop”. I would simply call it new pop. Yes, new pop, because that’s what I feel when I listen to the amazing I’m Not Afraid. What I mean by new is hard to describe without sounding a bit stupid, but It’s just an overall feeling of newness. New new new. ehhh.  

Well, the reason I chose Shimura Curves to be the first out here, is because this song has been in the top of my most played songs in iTunes since i got my new computer a month ago or so. I just can’t get enought of it!
