I am not going to cover everything that Dread did in his very amazing video tutorial (Block Break Down).  Nicely done man.  However, I would like to speak briefly about creating custom nuke blocks.  I don’t mean in the raven nuke wysiwyg editor provided for pasting code either.  I mean actually scripting a block and uploading it to the blocks folder.  Below is my template for every block I create.

As you can see in the above template I am using ($content =) for the first line of code.  Anything after that is ($content .=) and the reason for that is it is a continuation of ($content =).  When Phpnuke displays a block it compiles those all together.  So each new line must be a continuation of ($content =).  To my knowledge you can not use a different variable like ($myblock =), you must use ($content =), because that is what nuke is looking for.  If you use echo or print like you would in a module, that code wll appear outside the block.

You can use a custom variable in the below format, but at the end you still have define it as ($content =).  See the code example below.
