Exposure

Semua kamera video dilengkapi dengan sistem exposure serta white balance otomatis. Seperti mata kita, iris kamera akan menutup atau membuka secara otomatis untuk memasukkan jumlah cahaya yang sesuai. Kamera perekam secara otomatis akan membuka iris atau menambah aperture (bukaan yang sesuai) untuk mendapatkan lebih banyak cahaya atau menutupnya untuk membatasi jumlah cahaya yang masuk. Dalam intensitas cahaya yang rendah, kamera akan meningkatkan kemampuan penyerapan cahaya yang mungkin akan mengakibatkan gambar akan terlihat berbintik-bintik atau banyak butiran (grainy). Meski tak terlalu bagus, gambar seperti ini masih dapat digunakan.

Kita dapat menguasi fungsi hal ini dengan menghidupkan tombol iris manual atau menyesuaikan masukan cahaya secara manual. Tetapi kita harus terus-menerus menyesuaikan sendiri iris dari kamera. Kalau kita baru mulai belajar membuat video atau film, disarankan untuk menyalakan fungsi-fungsi kamera ini dalam kondisi otomatis. Dan harus kita ketahui, bahwa ketajaman layar dari LCD tidak ada hubungannya dengan setting dari exposure itu sendiri.

White Balance

Sumber cahaya yang berbeda akan menghasilkan "temperatur warna" yang berbeda pula. Pencahayaan tidak alami, seperti lampu pijar menghasilkan rona warna orange, cahaya matahari memberikan warna kebiruan. Kebanyakan kamera perekam memiliki fasilitas white balance otomatis, yang akan mengenali dan menyesuaikan suhu warna dari sumber cahaya yang didapatkan. Beberapa kamera juga memiliki fasilitas penempatan white balance yang berfungsi untuk mengantipasi sumber cahaya yang berbeda-beda. Jika kita memiliki kamera seperti ini, jangan lupa untuk senantiasa mengubah setting kondisi pencahaan. Kita juga dapat mengubah setting white balance secara manual dilokasi manapun dengan cara zoom in sebuah kertas putih atau obyek lainnya, sehingga kertas putih tersebut akan mengisi ruang di layar kamera. Kemudian tekan tombol white balance secara manual, menyetel video exposure & white balance secara manual merupakan tindakan yang sangat bagus dalam proses rekaman (produksi).

Teknik Penggunaan Kamera Video

Semua video tersusun atas gambar-gambar, rangkaian gambar dan adegan. Pada bagian ini kita akan secara khusus melihat bagaimana cara membangun dasar yang baik untuk berbagai jenis pengambilan gambar penting, dan bagaimana mengembangkan urutan peristiwa yang sangat mendasar. Salah satu cara untuk memikirkan pengambilan gambar (shot), rangkaian gambar (sekuens), dan adegan (scene), serta bagaimana menyatukannya, kita bisa membanyangkan sebagaimana stuktur paealel dari sebuah buku, seperti yang ada di bawah :

Komposisi dan Framing Gambar
Framing gambar (pembikaian gambar) adalah cara dimana sebuah adegan, orang, atau obyek ditempatkan disatu gambar dalam lensa kamera. Para penonton biasanya akrab dengan konvensi tertentu, maka sangatlah penting menyadari dampak berbeda yang dihasilkan oleh gambar yang berbeda. Jika kita merekam secara close up wajah seseorang, kita akan mengajak penonton untuk mengkuti alur pikiran, emosi, dan perkataan orang itu. Jika kita memfilmkan orang yang sama tetapi dengan jarak yang relatif lebih jauh, para penonton akan mengetahui konteks orang itu.

Ingat peraturan ini tidak bersifat baku, sekali kita tahu bagaimana aturan ini dipakai, kita akan mengerti fleksibilitasnya. Berikut beberapa tipe pengambilan gambar yang harus diketahui :

* Extrem Long Shots (ELS / Wide Shots)

Pengambilan gambar dengan cara ini biasa digunakan untuk "establishing shot" (shot untuk membangun situasi). Jenis gambar ini memberi orientasi pada penonton tidak hanya pada satu lokasi, tetapi juga atmosfer, konteks, dan situasi secara keseluruhan. Kapan pun kita ingin mengganti adegan di video kita, kita harus memberi orientasi ulang para penonton dengan establishing shot yang baru.

* Long Shot (LS)

Gambar ini menunjukkan orang dari kepala hingga kaki. Kita juga harus berhati-hati dengan head room (ruang disekitar kepala). Terlalu banyak ruang diatas kepala akan membuat gambar tampak aneh, begitu pun terlalu banyak ruang di kaki. Prinsipnya harus proposional.

* Mid Shot (MS) atau Medium Close up (MCU)

Gambar ini menunjukan orang dari atas pinggang hingga ke kepala. Jenis gambar seperti ini banyak digunakan saat wawancara.

* Close up (CU)

Gambar ini menunjukan orang dari dada ke atas hingga ke kepala dan sangat ideal untuk menunjukan bagian yang paling penting atau emosional dari sebuah adegan. Akan tetapi harus diingat lebih baik menampilkan kepala orang secara utuh daripada tidak menampilkan dagu orang, apalafi pada saat mereka berbicara.

* Extreme Close up ( ECU)

Gambar ini biasanya digunakan untuk menunjukkan detail, dan lebih menunjukan emosional yang akan disampaikan dari obyek.

Aturan Sepertiga

Panduan yang baik untuk komposisi gambar adalah menggunakan aturan sepertiga, artinya kita harus membayangkan frame kita (gambar yang diambil kamera kita) terbagi menjadi tiga bagian. Aksi / perbuatan dan obyek ditempatkan tepat ditengah irisan garis maya vertikal dan horizontal, penempatan ini akan membuat gambar jauh lebih menarik. Jangan menempatkan orang yang kita rekam di tengah frame hanya karena kita merasa dia cukup penting. Akan jauh lebih baik kita menempatkannya di horizon atau 2/3 bagian dari atas frame atau 2/3 bagian dari bawah frame. Jika kita merekam orang yang sedang berdiri disebuah adegan yang ukup lama berlangsung, akan sangat baik jika kita menempatkan orang tersebut sedikit lebih ke kiri atau ke kanan dalam frame. Pengaturan ini akan memungkinkan orang tersebut berbicara menghadap bagian / ruang kosong di dalam frame. Ruang itu disebut ruang untuk hidung (nose room).

Mendapatkan Gambar Berkualitas Baik

Fokus

Membuat gambar setajam mungkin adalah hal yang sangat penting. Hampir di semua kamera dilengkapi fasilitas fokus otomatis (auto focus). Di banyak situasi, fasilitas ini akan menjamin apa yang kita rekam memiliki ketajaman yang fokus.

Kapan Menggunakan Fokus Manual

Jika kita merekam gambar obyek yang banyak atau bergerak, atau jika obyek terletak baik dilatar depan maupun belakang, kamera bisa jadi akan bingung dan sulit menentukan fokusnya dan akan terus-menerus berusaha macari fokus pada satu gambar. Dalam situasi seperti ini beralihlah ke fokus manual, secara manual tentukan fokus pada obyek pokok. Di kondisi yang rendah cahaya, fasilitas fokus otomatis akan terus-terus "berburu" untuk mengalokasikan suatu obyek yang bisa menjadi fokus. Hal ini terjadi karena kamera membutuhkan intensitas cahaya yang mencukupi untuk bisa menemukan garis tepian obyek yang akan digunakan untuk menentukan titik utamanya. Dalam situasi seperti ini, fokus manual hanyalah satu-satunya piihan.

Memperbesar (zoom) dan memfokuskan

Semakin kita mendekatkan obyek (zoom in) semakin sempit ruang lingkup obyek yang bisa terekam di fokus. Fenomena ini disebut kedalaman ruang (depth of field). Contohnya, jika kita merekam dengan wide shot sekumpulan orang, maka kita akan menemukan bahwa hampir semua orang masuk ke fokus, tetapi jika kita zoom in atau close up salah satu orang yang ada di gerombolan tersebut, fokus pada orang yang dilatar depan dan belakang akan terlihat lebih lembut atau tidak fokus. Untuk menghidari ini, mulailah proses perekaman dengan zoom in dulu ke salah satu orang yang ingin di tampilkan. Berfokuslah pada orang itu, set kamera kita di fokus manual, kemudian tarik keluar gambar kita untuk mendapatkan wide shot. Ketika kita menggunakan zoom in untuk mendapatkan gambar, fokus akan tetap seperti yang kita inginkan.

Sony PD 170 The New Generation From Sony PD 150

Sony’s PD150 camcorder is an acknowledged favourite among DV filmmakers. Stylish, well featured and ruggedly built, it was always suited to video journalism and event videography, but it has also become more and more acceptable for use in broadcast programming and independent filmmaking. Now the company has launched its successor, the upgraded PD170.

Those familiar with the PD150 will instantly recognise the new family member. Sony has kept the look and many of the features of the PD150, but has improved several of the features. So how significant are these improvements? And how does the new camera fare against recent launches from competitors, such as the 24P-touting Panasonic DVX100 and the consumer HD JVC HD10?

Improved lowlight recording

First enhancement is improved lowlight recording. Sony has advanced the minimum illumination from 2 lux (PD150) to 1 lux (PD170) due to improved noise reduction and enhanced signal processing. Improving the lowlight capabilities for the PD170 is indeed a good thing, and considering the PD150’s unrivalled performance in low light anyway (compared to say the Canon XL1), this has raised the bar to an even greater level. There is a noticeable improvement (comparable to perhaps just under a quarter of a stop on the iris), but not an Earth-shattering difference. Still, if you’re shooting in a nightclub, say, it is always preferable to keep your images as defined as possible, without adding shed-loads of gain (which can result in a nasty grainy image – more noticeable on DV than any other higher-end format). The other option of course is to learn to light a scene properly or invest in a decent lightweight on-board video light.

Better iris adjustment

Improved iris adjustment from 12 to 24 stops gives smoother iris control. As the PD150 has gradually become a staple ‘one-man band’ camera on factual/entertainment programmes and fly-on-the-wall documentaries, this often means the operator has to move around in changeable levels of brightness (both indoor and outdoor). The ability to manually adjust the iris dial ‘on the fly’, with a less visible trademark jump between f-stop numbers, is a welcome new feature.

Screen and viewfinder

On the PD150 it was only possible to view the LCD screen and the viewfinder image independently. On the upgraded PD170 it is possible (via a setting on the camera menu) to use both the LCD and the viewfinder at the same time – good for quick monitoring of both focus (in the b/w viewfinder) and as quick reference for checking white balance and composition of shot when on the move (colour LCD screen). From the tests I conducted it appears that the LCD screen for the PD170 has been improved in terms of colour saturation (probably the result of the new LCD’s increased resolution). The PD150’s LCD screen tends to give a slightly over-saturated colour representation (mainly with reds and greens), whereas the PD170’s LCD screen gives a truer representation of what you are actually committing to tape (always useful).

Wideangle conversion lens

A wideangle conversion lens (x0.7) is included with the PD170 as standard. I have rarely used the PD150 without a wideangle lens, simply because I prefer the look and appreciate the benefits of having more options in a frame when shooting; without the wideangle lens, the PD150 image can appear flat and uninteresting, even on its widest setting. Though wider lenses are available for this camera, the 0.7x bundled with this kit (usually retailing around £200) gives about 30 per cent more field of vision, which is ample for this kind of camera.

The wide lens sits in its own hood when attached to the PD170. This protects the glass lens surface as well as preventing lens flare, which was always a problem using a wide conversion lens on the PD150 (when not using a matte-box). The lens hood/housing is plastic and lightweight; however, the camera still feels slightly front-heavy when the wideangle is attached.

Audio quality

Audio quality in manual mode is improved by 6db (s/n ratio) due to enhancements to the audio processing circuit. Though I did test the audio quality on the camera (using both the on-board mic and radio mics), I was unable to detect any significant improvement on the PD170’s audio quality (tested against a PD150). It is possible that with longer time to review the camera the audio improvements would have demonstrated themselves but, on the plus side, there was none of the audio hiss that delayed production of the PD170 when it was first announced (which was reported to happen only when the flip-out LCD screen was in use). This potential problem has now been fixed by the company.

Larger eyecup

The large rubber eyecup that comes as standard on the camera is a nice feature for when shooting in bright daylight and when you want to concentrate on the image in your viewfinder. It’s a bit of an oversight that there wasn’t a standard small eyepiece (as on the PD150) also included in the bundle, as a large rubber eyepiece can become uncomfortable when using for long periods of time (in which case you can easily fit on a standard protective chamois eyepiece over the rubber one). Following on from this, the new hybrid LCD screen has been modified (it is now both transmissive – meaning the LCD can be monitored safely in dark conditions – and reflective, meaning it is also fairly reliable in bright conditions), so monitoring the LCD while in bright sunlight means you can actually see a more true-to-tape image than you would on the PD150 LCD, when sun reflection and shadows made it hard to judge. The flip-open lens cap (fitted on the standard hood) is another nice feature – I have lost quite a few lens caps in the past.

PD170 vs PD150 Overall image quality is the same as the PD150 – the same 3 1/3” CCD imaging device remains (except for its improved low-light capabilities). It’s interesting that Sony has kept the cost of the PD170 the same as the PD150 (and added the wide adaptor for the price), but saying that, most of the developments are primarily ergonomic or operational. What Sony has done is improve a camera that has already made its name as a standard piece of kit in many areas of video production and broadcast.

NTSC & PAL video format

NTSC stands for the National Television Standards Committee. It is a video signal standard used by the color television industry in the United States and Japan. The NTSC is a common format used by many video compression boards. NTSC video contains frames and fields. Most NTSC video frames consist of two interlaced fields. Each field is displayed as alternating horizontal lines across the screen. Most computer video formats are non-interlaced. The frame aspect ratio used by the NTSC standard format is 4:3. This format uses a 640 by 480 resolution. By using the NTSC standard for digital video, there are two areas of concern when dealing with aspect ratios. They are as follows:

Pixel aspect ratio

Frame aspect ratio

There are various divisions within the NTSC standard which determine what pixel and frame aspect ratios are used. These formats are as follows:

NTSC (resolution 648 x 486 - preferred format)
D-1 NTSC (resolution 720 x 486)
D-1 NTSC Square Pix (resolution 720 x 540)

NTSC (Preferred Format)

This NTSC format uses a 648 by 486 resolution format. This format makes an allowance for a few additional pixels to be created on the screen edge that may be cut off when displayed. This format is also commonly used by many video compression boards. Because this format allows you to display a video without losing the "edges" of your video during playback, this resolution seems to be the preference within the industry.

D-1 NTSC

The D-1 NTSC format uses the same standard frame aspect ratio as the NTSC format. Unlike the NTSC format, the D-1 NTSC format uses a 720 by 486 resolution using rectangular pixels. The D-1 pixels used in the NTSC format are displayed using a vertical axis.

D-1 NTSC Square Pix

This format uses the same standard frame aspect ratio as the NTSC format. Unlike the NTSC format, the D-1 NTSC Square Pix uses a 720 by 540 resolution using rectangular pixels.

PAL

PAL stands for the Phase Alternating Line. This is a video standard used by the color television industry and is the common standard used in Europe. This video signal format sets the video to playback at 25 frames per second which contain 625 lines of pixels in each frame. There are various divisions within the PAL standard which determine what pixel and frame aspect ratios are used. These formats are as follows:

PAL (resolution 720 x 486)
D-1 PAL (resolution 720 x 576)
D-1 PAL Square Pix (resolution 768 x 576)

D-1 PAL

The D-1 pixels used in the PAL format are displayed using a horizontal axis. This format uses the same standard frame aspect ratio as the PAL format. Unlike the PAL format, the D-1 PAL uses a 720 by 576 resolution.

Adobe After Effects adalah satu dari sekian banyak software andal keluaran Adobe yang termasuk dalam kelompok digital video.

Pada skala industri, after effects ini sering digunakan ebagai software olah digital video yang bertugas menambahkan efek-efek visual. Meskipun software ini diperuntukkan sebagai penunjang pekerjaan digital video, namun pada prakteknya tidak sedikit yang menggunakan after effects ini untuk keperluan pembuatan animasi web, animasi logo, bahkan web video (vlogs).
Oke sekarang kita langsung saja pada tahap persiapan, disini akan kita bahas cara pembuatan

Teks Linear
1.1 Persiapan
Langkah pertama dari project ini adalah mempersiapkan composition sebagai wadah dari desain kita.

Buka program Adobe After Effects CS3.
Pada menu bar pilih composition > new composition
Pada kotak dialog composition settings tentukan composition name = teks line comp, width = 2000, height = 50, frame rate = 29.97, dan duration = 02 : 00

Klik OK
Ukuran movie nampak sangat kecil, karena After Effects otomatis men-zoom agar nampak seluruhnya dilayar monitor.
Tekan Ctrl+= sebanyak dua kali untuk men -zoom 200% atau hingga terlihat cukup besar
dilayar monitor.

1.2 Teks Line Comp
Selanjutnya kita akan menambahkan teks tertentu pada composition yang baru saja kita buat.

Lanjutkan desain kita
Pada toolbar klik ikon Horizontal Text Tool
Pada palette Character (terletak disebelah kanan layar monitor atau pilih window > Character untuk membukanya) tentukan font = myrad pro, type = bold, size = 20 dan fill color = putih.

Klik pada sembarang area di dalam composition viewer dan ketik teks berikut dengan tiga spasi sebagai antara : "otakkoe video article"
Pada timeline pilih layer teks
Tekan P untuk membuka parameter position
Tentukan position = 1000.0,31.0 agar teks tersebut berada tepat di tengah composition
Pada composition viewer ubah zoom = 100%
Klik tiga kali pada teks untuk memilih semua karakter yang sudah kita ketik
Tekan Ctrl+C untuk meng-copy teks
Tekan END untuk memindahkan pointer ke akhir teks
Tambahkan spasi sebanyak tiga kali
Tekan Ctrl+V untuk mem-paste teks

1.2.1 Animasi Teks
Pada tahap ini kta akan mendesain animasi pada teks yang sudah dibuat sebelumnya. Animasi yang diharapkan adalah memberikan kesan bahwa teks seolah-olah muncul dari tengah.

Pada timeline pilih layer teks
Pada menu bar pilih animate > animate teks > tracking
Pastikan kita berada pada timecode 00 : 00
Pada timeline tentukan tracking amount = -8
klik ikon stopwatch pada parameter tracking amount untuk menambahkan keyframe
Beralih ke timecode 01 : 29
Pada timeline tentukan tracking amount = 6
tekan spacebar untuk melihat preview
Pada timeline pilih (klik) keyframe yang ke - 2 (01 : 29)
Pada menu bar pilih animation > keyframe assistance > easy ease in
Tekan spacebar untuk melihat preview
Perhatikan perubahannya
Tekan T untuk membuka parameter opacity
Beralih ke timecode 00 : 00
Klik ikon stopwatch pada parameter opacity untuk menambahkan keyframe
Tentukan opacity = 0
Beralih ke timecode 00 : 04
Tentukan opacity = 100
Tekan spacebar untuk melihat preview
Perhatikan pengaruhnya, pemunculan teks nampak lebih natural
Beralih ke timecode 01 : 16
Pada menu bar pilih animate > add opacity keyframe

Kita baru saja menambahkan efek fade-out pada objek teks
Sebagai sentuhan akhir pada animasi teks ini, kita akan menambahkan efek motion blur untuk lebih memperkuat kesan gerakan yang natural
Pada timeline aktifkan mode motion blur (sayang sekali efek motion blur ini tidak akan nampak pada viewer, tetapi hanya akan mempengaruhi hasil render

1.2.1 Animasi Teks
Kita sudah selesai membua animasi teks, langkah berikutnya adalah melakukan proses render untuk menghasilkan final movie

Video clips are short clips of video, usually part of a longer piece. Video clips in digital format are often found on the internet where the massive influx of new video clips during 2006 was hailed as a new phenomenon having a profound impact on both the internet and other forms of media. Sources for video clips include news and sporting events, historical videos, music videos, television programmes, film trailers and vlogs. Webvideo in its current form distinguishes itself from what is mostly known as video on demand mainly in terms of technology, interface and cost for the user. The current hype in online video viewing only arose when sites were introduced that offered free hosting for the high-bandwidth content and the possibility to easily integrate these into personal Blogs or websites. This enabled online videos to cross over into the mainstream. The arrival of these sites also gave rise to more widespread use of the name webvideo. Video on demand however, is more closely associated with paid content of film studios, online video stores and cable providers. Video on demand also specifically references videos that start at a moment of the user's choice, as opposed to streaming, multicast and webcams in which the data is sent to the user live by a server.

Apakah Cerita itu ?

Pembuatan film adalah seni menenun sebuah cerita yang baik. sebuah cerita yang baik akan mencengkram imajinasi kita dan membawa kita ke dalam sebuah perjalanan menuju penemuan, melewati emosi, tempat, fakta, dan realitas. sebuah cerita yang baik akan membuat kita peduli, membuka mata kita akan ide-ide baru. Sebuah cerita yang baik akan memberi struktur dan arti bagi sebuah film, maka dari itu menemukan cerita yang benar adalah bagian terutama dalam keseluruhan proses pembuatan film.

Seperti yang diungkap oleh salah seorang movie maker asal kanada Peter Wintonick,
bahwa :

kita terhubung secara genetik dan terhubung secara psikologis, bahkan sejak kita
kanak-kanak, ketika kita bernynyi atau membaca cerita sebelum tidur, demi mencari
penyelesaian. Kita mesti mengikat cerita dengan kepribadian, dengan manusia.
Khususnya ketika editing, emosi dan logika mengalir kembali ke dalam konstruksi
sebuah cerita.
Untuk membuat penonton dan pengguna film merasakan adanya ruang untuk perubahan, kita perlu meninggalkan sebuah " ruang untuk aksi". Seberapa banyak kita akan melibatkan penonton di dalam sebuah cerita dan di bagian akhir cerita? setelah menonton, apakah penonton akan terpisah, atau merasa menjadi bagian dalam cerita tersebut?. Many open source content management systems, like Joomla, WordPress, and Drupal, enable posting of video content allowing bloggers to host and administer their own video blogging sites. Moreover, convergence of mobile phones with digital cameras allow publishing of video content to the Web almost as it is recorded.One example of this phenomenon, Qik, gives its users the ability to use a wide variety of phones with data plans to stream video via its built in camera.

Bicara tentang bahasa film & video, serta konvensi-konvensi yang biasa digunakan dalam proses pembuatan film/video, misalnya : konvensi tentang pembingkaian (framing shot). Berpikirlah seperti para penulis yang menggunakan tata bahasa dalam proses kerjanya, secara umum kita juga harus mematuhi konvensi-konvensi dan aturan yang berlaku, tapi sekali lagi kita harus memahaminya lebih dulu. Kita tidak harus melakukan pekerjaan ini sendirian, kita harus ingat bahwa kebanyakan film adalah hasil kerja tim dan bukan sebuah usaha secara individual semata. Selain kita mempersiapkan dari keseluruhan tim produksi, kita juga harus menyiapkan berbagai macam peralatan produksi yang diperlukan.

Peralatan ini terdiri dari :

Tas kamera dengan desiccant (pengawet dari silika) dimaksudkan agar kamera tetap denga kondisi kering

Kamera video, kamera video ini memiliki jenis bentuk serta ukuran yang bermacam-macam. Kamera video dikategorikan sesuai dengan kaset (tape) yang digunakan serta standar operasinya (PAL atau NTSC). Kebanyakan kamera sekarang berupa kamera digital, meski beberapa kamera lama masih menggunakan format analog.

Kaset (tape), berfungsi sebagai media penyimpanan data video yang akan kita rekam. Kaset ini memiliki 2 jenis format, yaitu analog dan digital. Seperti halnya kaset dengan format BetaCam SP atau DigiBeta (kebanyakan digunakan oleh industri penyiaran), VHS, Hi-8 (analog). selain itu ada pula pula yang berformat digital seperti miniDV,DVcam,HDV (high difinition video).

Tripod ini berfungsi agar dalam pengambilan gambar tidak goyang & tetap stabil, serta memiliki komposisi shot yang bagus.

Reflektor, banyak kamera dapat merekam dalam intensitas cahaya yang cukup rendah, tetapi gambar-gambar yang dihasilkan biasanya berkualitas rendah. Disinilah fungsi reflektor bekerja untuk memantulkan cahaya pada obyek yang kekurangan intensitas cahaya. Reflektor ini biasanya terbuat dari kertas timah atau kertas yang berwarna putih yang dapat memantulkan cahaya.

Write a detailed outline, treatment or script for your film. The treatment should be a succinct tense summary of your proposed video. Visualise what you want to say in the video from the moment it begins to its conclusion. Remember video is a visual medium, think it more like a short story, you’re not writing a thesis! The more you work out on paper the less time will be wasted overall. This is also the basis through which you communicate you ideas with the rest of the people who will be involved in the film.

Work out a budget. This requires experience to do accurately: You will need a camera and sound person, how many days? What equipment will you need? What format do you use? How long do you need a producer to organise the shoot? Do you need travel costs? Do you need the video logged and transcribed? How many days will you need to edit?

The production process involves three distinct phases :

Pre-production. Just before you start shooting you need to tie everything and everyone down. Make sure your actors/interviewees are available and not going on holiday, double check that you have permission to use the locations you want, be sure that the people you intend to interview know what the film is about and are willing to let you interview them. Check that you have the equipment booked and that it works. You may need to arrange training for the crew.

Interviewees informed and interviews arranged

Production. Allow plenty of time for your shooting (Think how long it will take and double it!) Once you start shooting, you’re in production and it’s too late to get organised - if you haven’t got it together in pre-production then your film won’t be as good as it could have been. Even when you have done your preparation, you can assume that Murphy’s Law will apply - anything that can go wrong will go wrong. You can allow for this by not filling your schedule to bursting point, allow for a contingency in the budget (at least 5%), and prioritising food and transport during the shoot. Don’t underestimate this: film shoots go on longer than you expect, average 12 hours a day, people get tired and hungry! Always bear in mind that you may not be able to shoot everything you planned on shooting so you should have priorities about what is essential and what could be dropped if need be.

Post-Production. After you finished the shoot, you have to get the video edited. This tends to be a long process and is highly skilled using expensive equipment. You may have access to an edit suite but check it out, connecting two VHS recorders just won’t do. Again preparation is vital and much of the work can be done on paper or on your PC. You should view VHS copies of your original tapes (rushes) and these should have burnt-in timecode (BITC) on them for easy reference. You can then write down the timecodes for the sections you will want to use in the edit. With some non-linear editing systems these can be entered on your PC to save time in the edit suite. You can go on to work out on paper how the finished video will be put together. Get all your interviews transcribed, this is essential and will greatly assist in making good edit decisions. All this will minimise the time spent in the edit suite which can cost hundreds, if not thousands of pounds to hire. The more preparation you do the cheaper it becomes. Once the film is nearing completion, you need to think about music, narration and archive material.

Executive Producer : In major productions, usually a representative or CEO of the film studio although the title may be given as an honorarium to a major investor - often oversees the financial, administrative and creative aspects of production, though not technical aspects. In smaller companies or independent projects, may be synonymous with creator or a writer.

film producer : is a person who creates the conditions for making movies. The producer initiates, co-ordinates, supervises and controls matters such as fund-raising, hiring key personnel and arranging for distributors. The producer is involved throughout all phases of the film making process from development to finish of a project.

film director : is a person who directs the making of a film. A film director visualizes the script (concept), controlling a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of their vision.

Location Manager : The Location Manager is responsible for the finding and securing locations to be used and coordinating the logistics involved for the production to successfully complete its necessary work. They are also the face of the production to the community and responsible for addressing the issues that may arise due to the production's impact on the community.

Director of Photography : is a person who is responsible to appoint a head of the camera and lighting crews working on a movie, which is responsible for achieving artistic and technical decisions related to the image.

The art director : Art director responsible for managing the art equipment that will be used in the production

The Storyboard : A story artist is able to visualize the story line using any sketches on paper.

The Sound Designer : is a person who is responsible to Sound technical/conceptually creative field. It covers all non-compositional elements of a film, a play, a music performance or recording, computer game software or any other multimedia project.
