Edwin Hodge to Guest Star on Leverage

Leverage returns with new episodes this summer.

And when the TNT hit premieres, viewers will be treated to a family affair: Edwin Hodge, the older brother of series regular Aldis Hodge, will guest star on the opening episode of season three.

Look for Edwin to portray an an accountant, TV Guide reports, who is sent to prison for a minor traffic offense. From there, he’s accused of killing an inmate and meets up with newly-incarcerated Nate.

“I just felt it was a great opportunity to share the screen with my brother and show the difference in our talents,” the elder Hodge said. “As siblings in the entertainment business, it’s always a great experience, and one I think all siblings should share.”

Edwin starred in Boston Public and has also appeared on Bones, Heroes, and Ghost Whisperer.

Leverage Season 2 Episode 15 ‘The Maltese Falcon Job’ Recap

My eyes have only seen a few episodes of ‘Leverage,’ and my brain is just now starting to understand its appeal. (My bodily organs don’t work very well together. It’s a long story. Words were said, tempers flared, pancreases made an off-color remark about someone else’s mother. Enough said.)

Sure on the surface it appears to be a mid-adrenaline, action-adventure spy/mystery/crime show, but the season finale gave it an emotional depth and character progression that even most serious dramatic shows fail to accomplish. And it goes way beyond “not sucking.”

Picking up from where we last left the team with the entire federal law enforcement force hunting them down after a diversion explosion lands them on every terrorist watch list, we learn that Sterling, Nate’s old nemesis, is hot on their collective tails. Of course, they still need the wormy mayor, played by the ever-wormy Richard Kind, now that he is a turncoat for the feds to take down other corrupt officials to save their own skin. So the heist turns from a simple political entrapment scheme into a full blown kidnapping job.

Eventually, the team discovers that Nathan really wants to take this guy down more than anything, which can make matters sloppy and slipshod and leads to a little division. The great story behind the story of the series has been the family element of the team and the way they fall back on each other, not just during a job but in an emotional realm. There have been hints of it throughout the last half of the season, like when Eliot notices Nate hiding his drinking habits, but they bubbled to the surface in the finale and played a bigger part in the plot than they have in the past.

Of course, the big twist, one they gave away in some of the show’s preview promos, is the fact that Nate managed to get himself pinched by his rival in a rather stupid move, and Tara tries to strike a behind-the-scenes deal with their target. Prior episodes lead you to believe this is just all part of some big set up that will be rolled out in a black-and-white flashback sequence later on, but it actually manages to surprise, even when you think you’ve got it all figured out. And instead of laying the trick on thick, it sticks with the dramatic angle and lets the subplot take hold of the episode.

The Sophie angle, which really hasn’t been that well explored in the middle of the second half of the season, could have been tacked on, but it actually played an integral part to the story and the awesome cliffhanger, in which Nate takes a bullet (both figuratively and literally) for his team and gets them off the hook instead of the other way around by setting himself up as the only piece of evidence in Sterling’s case. The moment did feel a tiny bit syrupy, but it still was a nice way of letting Nate prove to his team how much they mean to him and prove to himself who he is, no matter how hard he has tried to fight it.

George Clooney’s Girlfriend to Debut Her Acting in ‘Leverage’

George Clooney’s girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis is set to make her acting debut on U.S. TV – the Italian model has reportedly signed up to make a guest appearance in crime drama “Leverage“. The Hollywood heart-throb has been dating the beauty since summer 2009, and she has since landed a string of high profile modeling assignments including a starring role in Roberto Cavalli’s latest lingerie ad campaign.

Now 31-year-old Canalis is preparing to show off her acting skills as a “mysterious international secret agent” in the TNT network series, according to US Weekly.com. A source tells the website, “She’s very excited about the part as well as the chance to break into American television.”

“When the opportunity came up, she was thrilled. She knows she’ll be over (in the U.S.) to be with George at the Oscars so she’s hoping to shoot some of her part then.”

Leverage Season 2 Episode 14 ‘The Three Strikes Job’ Recap

Of course, that’s what the show wants you to think. It has sprinkled that little tidbit on promos and commercials and even as a billboard opener in last night’s episode. It turned out to be a great trick, a bit of slight of hand magic with a major cable network.

At one point, you think it’s going to be a political mystery, a promising start since the story can literally go anywhere and make coherent sense. The plot could turn to S&M midgets selling pony meat on the black market and it would make a great twist as long it points back to the corrupt politician caught holding the riding crop.

But then it switches gears over and over into whole new mysteries and directions until your head becomes a revolving restaurant leaving you both confused but strangely satisfied.

It starts rather ominously with a cop getting plugged in some of kind of “meet me under the bridge” meeting between two heavy metal armed strongmen. The cop turns out to be Nathan’s police connection and he has a young son, which triggers a very disturbing image of a clean cup Nate running into a hospital room screaming as he hugs the lifeless body of his son.

This seems to be his sole motivation for taking down a corruption and wormy mayor, played by Richard King, and bleeds into his work as he shouts at the team. The motivation for this wasn’t really clear until the end, but Timothy Hutton did a nice job of pulling off Ford’s suppressed feeling as they slowly boiled over into a sludgy foam.

Kind also makes perfect casting for a corrupt politician. He goes soft under pressure but knows how to twist arms with this thin visceral line of tediousness and annoyance as he pursues Nathan’s real estate cover for a new waterfront ball park in his town.

Things eventually kick into drive from a long period of neutral rather late in the episode and jarringly goes from a political mystery to an action standoff, but the pay off of the escape is exciting, clever and even funny as Alec has to sacrifice his beloved van “Lucille” to distract the federal fuzz while they make a break for it.

The truly clever part of all this is it is so down to the wire that the plot has you wondered if it won’t end in time and lead to a two-parter. Then it suddenly wraps and still manages to make a good cliffhanger for the show’s season finale episode by bringing back one of the show’s more interesting characters, Sterling, who is now an Interpol agent.

Every great action drama uses their season finale to push the lead or leads to their limits and test their alliances, their drives and even their lives to the very edge. Sterling should make for a nice bulldozer in next week’s finale.

‘Leverage’ Season 2 Episode 13 ‘The Future Job’ Recap

“He who sells miracles will have the devil knocking at his door.”/”What’s that? A proverb?”/”A fortune cookie.” – Alec to Parker

Probably the most interesting aspect of ‘Leverage‘, other than Parker’s wonderful taste in form fitting dresses, is the way it manages to top itself in small areas.

Not every episode is a home run in every category on the checklist, but it does find new ways to heighten the action, increase the twists and broaden their stories give or take an episode.

This week, the show managed to top something that I didn’t think was possible back on ‘The Bottle Job’ episode: make the mark the biggest, most evil prick of all time. Luke Perry steps into the villain role as a conniving faux-psychic who bilks money out of the grief stricken by not just taking their money, but also by taking “what’s still left on the table.” He tops off this tower of evil with his nice, cool demeanor that fits the character well and completes it with an evil twin goatee.

It makes him extra evil because he doesn’t even have a clean cut twin to counterbalance his evil. I never thought John Edward would have a serious contender to break his winning streak for “The Biggest Douche in the Universe Award.”

Things turned a little more dramatic than usual for the team this time. Parker gets emotional when the psychic cold reads a traumatic childhood event from her life and gives her the fuel she needs to take this guy down. Jeri Ryan really stepped up to the plate as a fake clairvoyant pretending to know everyone’s future in order to reel Perry’s character in and keep him dangling from the hook long enough for the rest of the team to set him up. It’s nice to know she’s got the chance to play more than hot blonde babes who seduces guys out of their pants for a crack at their wallet.

The twist moment, which comes every episodes but you don’t see because you’re too busy focusing on imaging the number of horrific ways the evil mark will get what’s coming to him, did feel a little weak. Perry’s kidnapping at the hands of a bank robber who needs a medium to find his old partner’s money stash is something no one could have seen coming. That’s because it was so far out there.

But it did set up the mark nicely by forcing him to admit that he’s a fraud before the very same people he deceived that not only discredits him and erases any chance he has of going pro, but also gets him arrested before he can do any more harm. Screen fades, credits roll. The end.

Isn’t something missing? There was really no subplot exploration about the new team member, the latest on Sophie’s whereabouts or how either are affecting the team. Maybe that was so it wouldn’t take any focus away from the huge guest star and the rather clever ways the team takes out their mark. Then again, with this show, maybe they are just trying to get your guard down so they can spring a new surprise on you next week. Let’s hope so.

Leverage Season 2 Episode 11 The Bottle Job – Review

Leverage has the thankless task of walking one of the most difficult tightropes in television writing.

How do you keep an audience interested in a show that they already know how it will end? The good guys always win and have so far for TNT’s favorite scheming do-gooders.

The show runners must have a whole bag of plot tricks and devices they use to keep the show interesting and last night’s was one of the most interesting diversions to keep our minds off the fact that good is about to triumph evil.

This week, the team has to save Nathan Ford’s favorite neighborhood watering hole from falling into the hands of a couple of wannabe Irish gangsters who are looking to collect a dead man’s debt. Sure the job’s not about saving some poor schlub’s living savings from a greedy corporate fat cat or keeping an orphanage’s entire supply of cornmeal and gruel out of the paws of some mass cornmeal and gruel producer. Instead, a friendly Irish pub and its cute redheaded owner hang in the balance. Sounds like a worthy cause to me.

But there’s a catch. They only have two hours (a half an hour, technically) to get the money to save it and throw the scheming Irish prick out on his ear, which means they’ll have to pull the greatest heist in the game. And this time, I really wanted the team to nail this son of a bitch. He’s a family wiseguy with aspirations to move into loansharking because of the charity it provides in these tough times of economic woe and uncertainty. Yeah, he’s a real Albert Schweitzer because every historian knows that when he treated patients in his hospital, he would break their arm in three places if they didn’t pony up the dough for their bill.

The scheme, at times, felt a little far fetched like when Nathan got the loanshark to bet against him on a basketball game on a 15 second delay. It just felt like quick filler that kept the whole scheme from cutting to the big car chase in the end. It did, however, present an interesting obstacle when Nathan, a recovering alcoholic, was forced to drink with the loanshark. Not only did it come out of nowhere, but it really had me wondering if more than a few sips of Grandpa’s cold remedy would throw the whole operation into a tailspin.
