Almost everyone in The Tudors is young, thin and beautiful. Not only is this a little unlikely, it can also make it hard to tell them apart. Fortunately, everybody says everybody else’s name all the time. “Master Holbein,” says the king, to Holbein. “Sir Robert, you look out of sorts,” he says to Sir Robert Tavistock, whose name has already been announced by the bloke manning the door.

“You don’t even know who I am, do you?” says a woman who is having sex with Sir Francis Bryan. “Of course I do,” he says. “You’re Edward Seymour’s wife.” It might have been simpler, if less dramatically feasible, to chalk everyone’s initials on their foreheads.

It’s Christmastide 1536, and Robert Aske (”Happy Christmas, Mr Aske,” says the queen) is down from Yorkshire to explain his role in the late northern rebellion. The king appears to be in a forgiving mood, but you don’t have to know much history to suspect he’s lying. Jonathan Rhys Meyers’s Henry VIII is an unblinking psychopath; he doesn’t spend a lot of time playing tennis or writing Greensleeves. He glares, rants, broods and says unnecessarily hurtful things: “Your low birth, Mr Cromwell, deems you unfit to meddle in the affairs of kings.”

This double episode covered Queen Jane’s pregnancy and the search for a suitor for Lady Mary, but the main theme was hanging. There was a tremendous amount of it. The Duke of Suffolk showed a certain reluctance to carry out the king’s instructions to hang all of Yorkshire. Robert Aske’s slow-motion hanging, seen from below, was a particularly gruesome interlude. We also got a few heads on pikes, one red-hot poker up the arse and a glimpse under Sir Francis’s eye patch.

It’s almost impossible to watch television these days without accidentally learning something about Henry VIII, but The Tudors is a revved-up history lesson: light on dates and heavy on sex, glamour and lovely table settings.

You wouldn’t want to be a Tudor, though. Death would stalk you, with a red-hot poker. You’d be lucky to last two episodes. Jane Seymour, predictably, didn’t quite make it.

‘The Tudors’ Attracts 2.3 million BBC Audience

The first episode of the third series of ‘The Tudors‘, broadcast on BBC2 last Friday night, drew an average audience of 2.3 million over the 90-minute show which started at 9.00pm. This figure is almost 1 million more than the programme’s usual audience average.

Filmed in Ireland, Morgan O’Sullivan (P.S I Love You) returns as executive producer for the series, with Dearbhla Walsh (Little Dorrit), IFTA winner Ciaran Donnelly (Inspector George Gently) and Jeremy Podewsa (Fugitive Pieces) directing.

Ten episodes have been commissioned for this current series which carries a budget of €20 million. Written by Michael Hirst (Elizabeth, The Golden Age), crew includes DOP Ousam Rawi (Vinegar Hill) and IFTA and Emmy winning costume designer Joan Bergin returning to work alongside Production Designer Tom Conroy.

David O’Hara has joined Showtime’s “The Tudors” as a recurring.

On the drama series about the reign and love life of Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), which is shooting its fourth and final season in Ireland, O’Hara plays the Earl of Surrey, the son and heir of the Duke of Norfolk. He is the arrogant but sensitive scion of an ancient family.

Scot O’Hara also has landed a role on the final installment of the “Harry Potter” series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” on which he will play Albert Runcorn, a Ministry of Magic employee who gets impersonated by Potter to get into the Ministry.

O’Hara, who recently wrapped the features “The Kid” with Rupert Friend and Natascha McElhone and “Golf in the Kingdom” opposite Malcolm McDowell, is repped by Affirmative Entertainment and U.K.’s A.R.G.

The Tudors: evidence of what happens with the ego runs amok

The Tudors on HBO is evidence of what happens when the ego is allowed to go unchecked. At the time of his reign, King Henry was one of the most powerful men on the planet and he could pretty much have everything his heart desired. From the moment he was born, his ego was inflated by people who felt that by nature of his birth, he was somehow better than everyone else and he bought into it hook line and sinker.

It is evident throughout the show, that he really has no idea what he really needs to be happy. The ego often attaches to the idea that “if I only had this one thing, I would be happy” . King Henry went through religions, friends, wives, and even children searching for happiness. There were people surrounding him that actually loved him and he was so blinded by his own illusions and perceptions, that he could not even see them. Anyone that didn’t do what he wanted or bored him was banished or even worse decapitated. Often after he killed his friends and family, he would mourn their deaths, often realizing after it was too late that he had made erroneous decisions based on lies perpetrated by those around him.

He fell victim to looking for external people and possessions to bring him happiness which is the reason why he never found it. Happiness comes from within and radiates out. His energy of confusion, pain and violence only drew more of the same.

Everyone should banish the statement, “if I only had ____, I would be happy” from their vocabulary because after you get that one thing, there will always be something else. You have to get off of the roller coaster and use an attitude of gratitude to be thankful for what you have and create happiness now.

The Tudors – Joss Stone will be back

British singer Joss Stone has signed to return to Showtime’s drama “The Tudors” for its fourth and final season.

She will reprise her role from the current third season as Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers).

Anne, whose marriage to Henry was annulled after he decided he no longer found her attractive, became the king’s confidante and outlived his other five wives.

Stone is repped by Fortitude.

The good news is that Showtime’s The Tudors, starring dreamy Jonathan Rhys Myers as crazyass King Henry VIII, has been picked up for a fourth season to debut in spring 2010, according to the network. The bad news is that it will be its final season, wrapping up the saga of the king best known for either killing, exiling or otherwise mentally torturing his many wives and the members of his court over the years.

Though the fourth season is set to wrap up the story of the megalomaniac madman, it might not be the end of The Tudors per se. Read on…

Executive producer Michael Hirst recently told us this hopeful tidbit: “By calling the series The Tudors, we’ve at least given ourselves the possibilities of doing other Tudors. Elizabeth has been done to death, but Mary and Edward haven’t, and even Henry’s father hasn’t.”

As for season four, 10 one-hour eps are planned and will focus on the turbulent relationships with King Henry’s last two wives, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr, and the leader’s descent into madness.
