The holidays are almost here, and it’s a great time to get your car ready for your holiday travels. Good thing the folks at Caltrans have a comprehensive list of Winter Driving Tips to help everyone safely get where they are going.

When Heading into Snow Areas:

Make sure your vehicle is in top running condition.

Always carry chains. Ensure they are the proper size for your tires and are in good working order. Practice installing your chains before you need to, and be sure to carry extra chain links and tools for repairing your chains.

Carry an ice scraper and broom to remove ice from your car and windshield.

Take along warm clothes, water, food, and blankets. They may be needed in the case of a lengthy delay.

In case of a detour, keep an updated map of the area in your car.

Put an extra key in your pocket. Many motorists lock themselves out when putting their chains on.

Driving Tips:

Allow extra time for your trip. Detours and delays are common in snowy and icy conditions, so get an early start so you have plenty of time to reach your destination.

Keep your tank full. Be ready for any delays, detours, or closures and make sure you aren’t going to run out of gas in the mountains.

Slow down. Snow and ice make it much more difficult to stop, and often the posted speed limit is too fast for safe winter driving.

Watch for emergency vehicles and road equipment. Limited visibility can make it hard to see stop or slow moving vehicles. Be particularly aware of vehicles that may be stopped on the shoulder.

Tips Motor Sulit Di Stater Pagi Hari

Motor sulit di stater bila pagi hari paling sering terjadi pada pemilik motor, hal ini terjadi lantaran tidak bekerja dengan baiknya sistem bahan bakar. Paling kerap dialami yakni aliran bensin ke karburator gak lancar atau bahkan tidak mau ngalir sama sekali.

Tentu kendala itu pasti ada sebabnya dong. Untuk memastikannya, “Yakni dengan memeriksa ada tidaknya aliran bahan bakar pada slang bensin yang terhubung ke karburator,” bilang Budhi Yanto, mekanik Mad Cat’s di kawasan Lenteng Agung, Pasar Minggu.

Saya akan coba memberikan beberapa tips semoga bermanfaat buat anda.

Langkahnya begini. Parkir motor pakai standar tengah, lalu buka cover bodi yang menutupi karburator. Jika sudah, coba cabut slang bensin yang nancap di karbu. Tapi sebelumnya, untuk motor yang menganut keran bensin konvensional kayak Yamaha RX-King, Honda Grand dan sebagainya, sebaiknya keran diposisikan ‘Off’ lebih dulu.

Bila slang sudah terlepas, coba buka keran bensin tadi dan perhatikan apakah ada bensin yang mengalir atau tidak. Sementara pada motor yang menganut keran bensin otomatis alias model membran kayak Honda Karisma/Supra X125, Yamaha Nouvo, Mio dan sebagainya, Anda kudu melepas slang vakum dari keran yang biasa terpasang di intake manifold. Lalu coba tiup slang vakum itu sembari memperhatikan keluar tidaknya bensin dari slang bensin yang menuju karburator (lihat gambar).

Kalau ternyata aliran bensinnya lancar-lancar saja, kemungkinan penyebab mesin mati atau susah hidup pada sistem bahan bakar ini sumbernya ada pada karburator, bukan pada sistem penyalurannya.

“Tapi bila bensin tak mau ngalir atau alirannya kecil, bukan tak mungkin ada penyumbatan di saluran bahan bakarnya. Bisa dari keran bensin, filter bensin atau di tangki bahan bakar,” urai Yanto.

Nah, buat melancarkan kembali, diperiksa satu per satu bagian mana yang jadi biang keroknya. Untuk filter bensin, biasanya dari visual akan kelihatan. Terutama filter bensin yang terbuat dari bahan tembus pandang. Bila tampak sudah terlalu butek, tandanya sudah terlalu banyak kotoran bersarang di dalamnya. Disarakan untuk diganti baru karena umumnya filter tersebut susah dibersihkan.

Tapi jika filter bensin baik-baik saja, atau jika sudah diganti baru namun bensin tetap tidak mau ngalir ke karburator, mau tak mau mesti periksa keran bensinnya. Buat motor yang keran bensinnya menyatu dengan tangki (umumnya pada motor jenis sport), saat membongkar keran bensin, kosongkan isi tangki terlebih dulu.

Hitung-hitung sekalian kuras tangki (lihat gambar). Oh iya, kata Yanto, tangki bahan bakar disarankan dikuras setiap 1-2 tahun sekali. Ini untuk mengantisipasi adanya kotoran atau endapan yang dapat menyumbat saluran bahan bakar dari tangki menuju karburator.

Setelah keran dibongkar, cek apakah ada penyumbatan kotoran atau tidak. Mulai dari saringannya hingga lubang-lubang salurannya. Cara membersihkannya bisa disemprot dengan angin bertekanan. Begitu pula pada keran model vakum (lihat gambar). Tapi saat penyemprotan saluran-salurannya, mebran kudu dilepas. Karena jika tidak, bisa memyebabkan membrannya sobek.

Untuk keran model vakum ini, selain memeriksa dan membersihkan kemungkinan adanya kotoran pada semua lubang saluran yang ada (lubang vakum maupun bensin), cek juga kondisi membran, per hingga sil pembuka tutup aliran bensinnya (lihat gambar).

Umumnya selain terjadi penyumbatan kotoran, ogah mengalirnya bensin bisa juga dikarenakan membran sobek. Kalau sudah begini, mau tau mau mesti ganti keran baru lantaran repair kit-nya tidak dijual ketengan.

Tips Sebelum Ganti Spuyer Yamaha Scorpio-Z

Salah satu problem yang sering dikeluhkan pemilik Yamaha Scorpio Z, adalah knalpot sering memperdengarkan suara nembak saat gas ditutup. Tak sedikit mekanik menyarankan untuk menaikkan ukuran spuyer di karburator. Terutama pilot jet. Sementara penggantian main jet, cenderung dilakukan ketika dapur pacu sudah di-upgrade.

Tapi sayangnya, spuyer dengan ukuran lebih gede dari standar bawaan motor buat Scorpio tak ada produk ori-nya. Bahkan untuk mencari ukuran standar orisinal saja tidak mudah. Seperti pengakuan Wily V via surat elektronik pada OTOMOTIF.

“Saya mau tanyakan mengenai pilot jet dan main jet untuk motor saya Scorpio. Saya berniat menaikkan ukuran pilot dan main jet-nya. Tetapi ukurannya susah untuk dicari,” tutur Willy. Oh iya, masih kata Wily, bahwa ukuran pilot jet standar Scorpio miliknya adalah 17,5. Sedang main jetnya 112.

Yang ia tau, pilot dan main jet motornya tersebut setipe bentuknya dengan punya Yamaha F1ZR dan Suzuki Satria. Tapi pada saat ia mencoba beli pilot jet ukuran 20 punya F1ZR, teryata ketika diperhatikan lubangnya lebih kecil dibanding pilot jet asli Scorpio.

“Mohon bantuannya berapa ukuran yang harus saya pakai jika pakai kepunyaan F1ZR atau Satria yang ukurannya lebih gede dari pilot dan main jet asli bawaan Scorpio. Karena untuk dapat yang asli buat Scorpio, saya tidak menemukannya,” harap Wily pada OTOMOTIF.

Menurut Romi Indarmadi dari bengkel Pendawa Motor di Jl. Mesjid Raya Jati Cempaka, Pondok Gede yang kerap menangani upgrade performa Scorpio, bahwa pilot jet Scorpio memang sama bentuknya dengan Force 1 atau F1ZR (gbr.1). Sedang untuk main jet bisa cari punya Mikuni TM (gbr.2).

“Kalau pilot jet asli Force 1, ukurannya lebih besar dari Scorpio. Ada yang sampai 22,5. Tapi bila yang ditebus adalah produk aftermarket, terkadang besarnya lubang suka tidak sesuai dengan ukuran. Jadi sebaiknya cari spuyer yang asli punya motor lain. Bisa juga pakai spuyer karburator racing kayak Mikuni TM,” saran Romi.

Berbeda dengan pendapat Suar, mekanik Bintang Racing Team (BRT) di Cibinong Jabar. Dari pengalamannya mengoprek mesin Scorpio, ia tidak menemui kendala saat mengaplikasi spuyer aftermarket.

“Waktu itu saya pakai spuyer merek Extreme dan AHRS (gbr.3). Karena menerapkan porting polish, cuma naik pilot jetnya saja 1 step (ukuran 20). Sejauh ini tak ada kendala berarti. Hasil pembakaran terlihat baik kok,” aku Suar.

Memang, lanjut Suar, terkadang kalau dilihat sekilas, besar lubang seperti tidak sesuai dengan ukuran. Tapi untuk memastikan sesuai tidaknya sama kebutuhan mesin, ya harus dijajal dulu.

“Kan bisa dirasakan dari perubahan putaran atau performa mesin, atau bisa dilihat dari hasil pembakaran di busi. Termasuk bila pakai spuyer punya motor lain. Asalkan bentuknya sama dan ukuran yang dicari lebih gede, ya coba jajal dulu. Namanya juga trial and error. Kalau masih belum pas, coba naikkan lagi 1 step,” sarannya

How To Start a Car/Truck Share

Last year a friend of mine came up with a great idea: sharing a pickup truck. He had been fantasizing about buying a little truck to haul mulch, lumber, furniture, whatever. A few other friends had recently bought fixer-upper houses or started some big home/garden renovation projects, so owning our own pickup truck seemed to many of us like both a good idea also a far-fetched one at the same time, financially speaking.

Enter the truck co-op.

Here's how we did it: five households (all within 2 miles of each other) agreed to buy a beat-up old work truck together. Price tag: $1,000. We split the cost 4 ways ($250 each), with the fifth $250 share going into the maintenance fund. One person volunteered to add the truck to his car insurance and to manage the maintenance fund. In repayment, he does not have to pay into the annual maintenance fund ($150/year).

The truck, whose name is 'Red Betty' for her lovely coloration, is reserved by co-op members for 1/2 day blocks using a Google calendar. We each have a set of keys. Folks outside the co-op can rent her for $50 for one day, no more than 2 days in advance (so that co-op members get first dibs). The small number of rentals we've had so far have done well to keep our maintenance fund in good shape.

Our other 'rules' are, don't take Red Betty outside our 3-county region, and do bring her back full of gas. That's about it.

Red Betty lives at one co-op member's house, since she has a big driveway and plenty of parking. Since we're all close by, this is a really convenient arrangement. So far, my partner and I have used Red Betty to haul a huge load of mulch that we got for $12 from the city, a desk I bought (saving us a $25 delivery fee), some lumber, all the stuff from our shed when we moved in December, and a few other odds and ends. Red Betty also does regular duty at the Boys Club, where another co-op member volunters by running the kids' community garden there.

Some tips to make a car share successful (based on my experience):

Agree on all the rules/guidelines as a group and maintain them someplace, like on a website.

Make sure everyone has ample opportunity to use the car-share. Too many families sharing one vehicle can make it less useful for members. Five households means that our truck is always free when we need her - and that she gets relatively light use, an important consideration for an elderly truck!

Use a Google calendar or another easily-accessible scheduling tool to manage reservations.

Put one person in charge of vehicle maintenance, preferably someone with some skills in that area. Being able to change the oil and do minor repairs yourself will save the co-op a lot of maintenance money, but make sure that the maintenance coordinator gets some kind of stipend (as in our case, where he doesn't pay maintenance fees).

Go co-op with people you respect and trust, and be sure to treat them with that respect and trust in all interactions. If problems come up, work them out politely and in a full group setting.

Friends can go co-op on all sorts of useful items, like power tools, lawnmowers, yard-work, child-care, art supplies/equipment, community gardens, and all kinds of other things. Think of large purchases that you'd like to have but don't have the space, or may not use all that often - it may be perfect for a co-op arrangement. In our group's case, this co-owning has made other big investments (like do-it-yourself home renovation) possible where they might otherwise have been out of reach.

Of course, you don't have to manage something like a car-share yourself. There are plenty of memberships you can buy into that include the cost of management, like Zipcar. Here are a few resources to consult if you're in the market to share a car, truck or other significant item:

So the basic idea behind sharing instead of buying is to save money and natural resources by buying less stuff, particularly in the area of large, expensive, high-resource items like cars. But one of the best side-benefits of sharing stuff is the community-building. Taking on a large project like this with other people builds trust, caring and a shared sense of responsibility for our own greater well-being. Our co-op beater truck has generated quite a few group projects, including a notoriously fun afternoon of ripping apart an old porch at one co-op member's house (it was so much fun that the video made it to YouTube).

Tampilan Baru Yamaha Mio

Dari tampilan, terutama di sektor bodi, modifikasi yang dilakukan Subagyo dari B Custom terhadap Yamaha Mio 2009 ini tak ada yang ekstrem. Tapi, ada satu bagian yang bisa dibilang unik, yakni model peredam kejut depan yang tunggal.

Untuk mengubah dari standar ke model tunggal, sang modifikator menggunakan bahan besi yang pas sebagai pegangan dan dudukan peredam kejut. Untuk suspensi depan, kata Subagyo, ia menggunakan pipa setebal 5 mm dan lebar 50 mm.

Desain diakuinya mengikuti skuter Italia. Supaya terlihat rapi, pelat besi dibungkus pelat baru lagi, kemudian didempul dan dicat rapi. Sementara itu, peredam kejut belakang berubah, tidak di pinggir, tapi bergeser ke tengah dan memakai punya Suzuki RG-R. Sementara itu, pegangan peredam kejut bagian bawah dibuat dari pipa diameter 1 inci (25,4 mm) yang dibautkan ke cover CVT.

"Tapi sumbu roda masih standar dan tidak saya tergoda untuk memundurkannya karena konsepnya racing look," ungkap builder asal Jawa Timur yang kini menetap di Pulau Dewata itu.

Biar gampang, velg tetap menggunakan asli Mio. Namun, as roda harus dibuat ulang. "Dibuat di tukang bubut yang ukurannya sedikit lebih besar dibandingkan aslinya supaya kuat," urai ayah dua anak ini.

Urusan bodi, Bagyo tak ingin macam-macam. Bagian belakang dibuat bergaya racing dengan memakai pelat galvanis. Sementara itu, bagian depan cukup andalkan punya Mio Soul yang di-custom ulang.

Perdana Menteri Israel Beli Audi A8L Anti Peluru

Pemerintah Israel memilih Audi A8L sebagai mobil dinas untuk Perdana Menteri Benyamin Netanyahu.

Dipilihnya sedan sasis panjang setelah memenuhi beberapa persyaratan, di antaranya tak cuma mewah dan nyaman. Lebih penting lagi, menyangkut keamanan

Ternyata, unsur-unsur tersebut terdapat pada mobil buatan pabrikan Jerman Audi A8L Security yang punya kelebihan anti-peluru.

Dibeli dengan harga 685.000 dollar AS (Rp6,1 miliar) sebagai mobil termahal dari yang pernah dibeli Pemerintah Israel.

Mobil ini akan membawa Netanyahu dalam berbagai kegiatan kenegaraan. Kendaraan ini merupakan pengembagan dari model A8L bermesin W12 quattro yang pertama kali dluncurkan pertengahan 2007 lalu.

Untuk kepentingan melindungi Kepala pemerintahan, kabin penumpang dilapisi baja dan kaca anti-peluru serta serat aramida yang tahan api."Kendaraan ini memang disediakan untuk perdana menteri agar memiliki perlindungan terbaik sesuai dengan standar keamanan tentara.

Pemilihan dilakukan melalui tender terhadap beberapa merek yang mampu menyediakan kendaraan seperti ini. Perdana menteri tak dilibatkan dalam pemilihan unit yang digunakan, semua diputuskan oleh para profesional di bidangnya," ujar pihak kantor Perdana Menteri Israel.

Audi A8L menggunakan mesin bertenaga 450 PS tapi dengan bobot kendaraan jauh lebih berat karena material pada bodi. Kelebihan lainnya, dalam kondisi darurat mobil ini menyediakan berbagai teknologi komunikasi termutakhir termasuk telepon dan mesin fax.

Mobil juga tetap bisa melaju meski ban kempis. Faktor kenyamanan tak lepas dari sajian, beberapa fitur seperti kulkas, bar, tempat penyimpan cerutu (humidar) sampai DVD player.

Selain Audi beberapa produsen mobil lain yang memasarkan mobil kepresidenan adalah Mercedes-Benz, BMW dan GM.

Tips Kendaraan Susah Di Starter

Apa anda pernah mengalami gak hal seperti itu, tiba-tiba kendaraan anda susah di starter, pas buru-buru mau keluar eh kendaraan gak mau nyala, jangan buru-buru kebengkel sebelum membaca tips yang satu ini, langsung aja ya...

Yang perlu anda ketahui adalah bagian starter yang penting antara lain :

1. Switch Starter (solenoid switch)

2. Bendix starter

3. Arang Starter (Carbon Brush)

Apa yang harus anda lakukan ? yang harus anda lakukan adalah mempelajari gejala2 yang timbul saat starter tidak mau bekerja, dari gejala2 tersebut dapat di tebak dan diketahui kemungkinan sumber kerusakan.
Gejala2 gejala yang sering muncul pada saat kita start antara lain :
1. Lampu indikator battery dan Oli pada dashboard tidak menyala sama sekali.
Kemungkinan 75% fusiblelink (kabel lemas kecil dengan soket putih dekat dengan terminal aki +) kotor atau putus.
kemungkinan lain adalah kepala aki kotor dan atau aki anda terkuras total setrumnya (jarang sekali). 2. Lampu indikator battery dan oli pada dashboard (warna merah) nyala namun meredup ketika di starter.
Kemungkinan 90% aki anda rusak atau kurang setrum.
3. Tedengar suara "gemeretek " berulang ulang.
Kemungkinan 75% aki anda rusak atau kurang setrum.
Kemungkinan 20% kepala aki kotor atau kabel ground anda sudah korosi.
4. Terdengar suara mesin berputar tetapi lemah seperti "ngeek..ngek…ngek….".
Kemungkinan 75% bushing starter aus sehingga anker starter sudah tidak dapat berputar pada sumbunya maka perputarannya menjadi sangat berat.
10% ada kemungkinan mesin anda terlalu berat untuk diputar, misalnya terjadi kerusakan pada crank saft, sistem timing dll.
5. Terdengar suara "cek.." satu kali saja setiap kali memutar kunci kontak…
Kemungkinan 50% switch starter atau yang disebut solenoid switch sudah tidak berfungsi dengan baik.
Kemungkinan 40% kunci kontak anda kotor atau sudah aus. untuk mobil yang menggunakan relay starter 40% itu ada pada kerusakan relay.
6. Starter terkadang dimulai dengan suara berat lalu enteng dan mesin hidup.
Biasanya hal ini terjadi karena kesalahan penyetelan Fur dan Na..delco.
7. Pagi hari tidak dapat starter, pada siang hari starter lancar.
Kemungkinan 80% aki sudah soak tidak dapat menyimpan setrum untuk waktu yang lama.
8. Saat pagi mudah starter, jika sudah dipakai agak lama (panas) susah starter.
Kemungkinan 80% switch starter/solenoid switch anda rusak.
9. Saat distarter tidak ada reaksi sama sekali, tidak ada bunyi.
Kemungkinan 50% gulungan starter anda Hangus atau terbakar/korslet.
Kemungkinan 45% Relay starter atau kunci kontak anda bermasalah.
10. Saat distarter terdengar suara dinamo starter mutar mendesing kencang "ssing…"
Kemungkinan 80% bendix starter anda Dull/dol. 11. Terkadang bisa starter terkadang tidak, baik dalam keadaan panas maupun dingin, pagi atau malam.
Kemungkinan 75% Carbon Brush starter anda sudah pendek.
Nah setelah mempelajari gejala2 yang timbul, agar lebih detail mengetahui penyakit mobil anda, yang harus dilakukan adalah :
1. Lakukan pengecekan Voltase battery anda, Battery yang bagus biasanya voltasenya tidak dibawah 12.4V, jika dibawah itu mungkin bisa saja starter namun tidak untuk starter panjang dan berulang ulang.
2. Jika analisa dari gejala gejala yang timbul diatas menjadikan starter sebagai tersangka utama maka lakukan pengetesan starter secara langsung. Dengan cara menggabungkan sumber setrum pada switch starter biasanya baut 12 dengan kabel tembaga yang besar dengan terminal kunci kontak yang terletak di switch starter juga (disamping kiri yang terdapat satu kabel terpasang padanya. Cabut kabel tersebut maka akan terlihat sebuah terminal kecil).

"SEBELUM MELAKUKAN HAL INI PASTIKAN POSISI GIGI TRANSMISI PADA POSISI NETRAL"

Gabungkan no 8 dan no 9 dengan kabel atau obeng logam. Pada kondisi normal maka starter akan memutar mesin. Jika iya berarti kunci kontak anda atau relay anda bermasalah. Jika tidak coba lakukan pengetesan no 3.
3. Jika cara diatas belum dapat mempersempit permasalahan lakukan penggabungan terminal no 8 pada gambar dengan terminal no 7 pada gambar yaitu berupa dua terminal baut 12 yang terdapat pada switch starter. Pada kondisi normal seharusnya Starter akan memutar dengan kencang tanpa memutar mesin. (karena gigi bendix tidak didorong oleh switch starter jadi tidak memutar flw wheel). jika tidak maka permasalahan kemungkinan besar terdapat pada dinamo starter anda, bisa karena gulungan yang terbakar atau brush starter yang habis. bisa pula karena kabel penyampai strum anda dari aki ke starter (ke terminal no 8 pada gambar ) tidak terhubung secara benar.

Kali ini aq akan coba sharing tentang bagaimana supaya kendaraan kita bisa hemat bahan bakar apalagi harga bahan bakar sekarang gak tanggung-tanggung nih, oke deh langsung aja ya...
Pertama : Periksa tekanan ban secara berkala, sesuaikan dengan spesifikasinya. Kurang angin menyebabkan pemborosan bahan bakar, terlalu keras pun sering membuat boros karena ban sering tergelicir atau selip. Pergunakan ban standar, ban berukuran besar membuat boros bensin.
Kedua : Lakukan spooring dan balansing secara berkala. Kesalahan spooring bisa mempercepat keausan ban dan boros bahan bakar.
Ketiga : Tune-up mesin secara berkala, termasuk penggantian pelumasnya. Gantilah saringan-saringan secara berkala.
Itu dilihat dari mesinnya tapi ada cara penghematan yang sangat tergantung dari manusianya juga lho...
- Jangan mengendarakan mobil secara ugal-ugalan
- tekan pedal gas seperlunya
- Hindari pengendaraan berhenti dan bergerak secara berulang-ulang dalam waktu lama
- Pergunakan AC seperlunya
- Terakhir, usahakan mobil selalu dipacu dalam kecepatan tetap, kecepatan ideal di luar kota sekitar 70 km / jam.

For automotive applications, there are basically three types of batteries: conventional, maintenance-free, and recombination.

Conventional Batteries

A 12-volt automotive battery contains six cells. In each cell is a series of alternating positive and negative plates, between which are isolator or separator plates to keep them apart. All the negative plates in the battery are connected, as are all the positive plates. Each plate has a grid construction, and to this grid, the plate's active material - sponge lead - is bonded. The plates in each. cell are covered with a solution of distilled water and sulfuric acid (electrolyte). As the battery discharges (supplies electricity), the acid in the electrolyte reacts with the active material in the battery plates, forming lead sulfate and weakening the electrolyte solution. Conversely, as the battery is charged, the acid is returned to the solution, thereby strengthening it, and the used portion of the lead sulfate is converted back into active material in the plates. During this process, hydrogen and oxygen molecules are off-gassed out of the electrolyte, which is why a conventional battery often needs topping up with distilled water. The charge and discharge cycle also means that some lead sloughs off the plates. Over time, this builds up in the bottom of the case, reducing the overall capacity of the battery fluid. When enough material builds up, the plates will short out, and you're stuck with a dead battery.

Maintenance-Free Batteries

Closed (maintenance-free) batteries are essentially the same as conventional batteries, except that they contain extra electrolytes in the partially sealed case. However, over time, this excess fluid is used up as fluid slowly off-gases hydrogen and oxygen molecules through the vents. Because these batteries cannot usually be topped off, once the plates begin to be exposed, the battery's life span is over. Usually, this takes a long period of time, which is why these batteries often last longer than conventional batteries. However, in situations where frequent, rapid charge/discharge occurs (such as when running a winch or powerful spotlight without running the engine), a maintenance-free battery may not outlast a conventional one.

Another type of maintenance-free battery is the gel-type battery While these batteries cannot leak or spill fluid and can be installed at odd angles, they do have a weakness. Using electrolyte gel necessitates the use of thinner plates so that adequate dispersion of the acid through the active material occurs. Since gel batteries are also sealed, they cannot be topped off and care must be taken when charging so they don't overcharge and gas-off, which will result in excessive sloughing of the plates, premature reduction in electrolytes, and eventual battery failure. This means that during the harsh vibrations associated with trail riding, a marginal gel battery can fail completely as the plates literally fall apart.

Recombination Batteries

The recombination battery is overall the best battery for off-road and heavy-duty use. They're called recombination because they recombine the gas formed during charging, channeling it into the separators so it doesn't vent out of the battery and reclaiming the water to keep electrolyte concentration at optimum. They are completely sealed (except for a reseating pressure-relief vent) and require no topping off of fluids. Recombination batteries can use either liquid or gel-type electrolytes and are different from other batteries because the acid is bound into the separators and pure lead can be used in the plates. Because of the purity of the materials used, there is no sloughing and the plates in these batteries can be very tightly packed. The result is a powerful, compact battery with quicker charging time, lower internal resistance than conventional or maintenance-free batteries, and a longer life span. In fact, for a conventional battery to deliver the same amount of starting power as a recombination battery, it would have to be two or three times larger. Because they contain no liquid as such, recombination batteries can be mounted in any position, will work when the case is damaged, and won't leak in a rollover. In short, for off-road use, they are just about the perfect battery.

How Batteries Are Rated

Battery ratings are a determination of how much power a battery can produce under marginal conditions. There are a number of ways to determine a battery's output, but ratings by ampere hour (Ah), cold-cranking amperes (CCA), and reserve capacity are the most common.

Ampere hours are determined by the SAE 20 test. This test is designed to show the amount of current that can be drawn from a battery for 20 hours without the voltage dropping below 1.75 volts per cell. In real-world terms, this means that a healthy battery should be capable of keeping the parking lights lit for 20 hours. For starting your truck, Ah doesn't mean much. However, for powering accessories without the engine running, this can be an important measurement.

Cold-cranking amperes or CCA is the unit of measurement that generally determines a battery's ability to start your engine. CCA is a measurement of the worst conditions under which a battery can be expected to deliver current, and it tests how much current in amperes a battery can deliver under extreme cold. According to the American SAE standard, CCA is determined by measuring how much current can be delivered in amperes for 30 seconds at -18 degrees C with a final voltage of 7.2 volts per cell or higher.

Reserve capacity is an important measurement for the total capacity of the battery and shows how long a battery can keep the engine running if the alternator/generator fails. Reserve capacity of a battery is measured in minutes at room temperature (approximately 70 degrees F). During this test, 25 amperes is drawn from the battery for as long as the voltage does not drop below 10.5 volts. For off-road use, it's a good idea to make sure any battery you purchase has a reserve capacity of at least 120 minutes.

Reserve capacity is also important for those times when you need to run a radio, spotlight, winch, or other electrical accessory without running the engine.

A Batteries Two Enemies

Although just about all modem batteries are pretty reliable, there are two enemies that can grind even a brand-new battery to a halt - extreme cold and extreme heat. Batteries are at their best with internal temperatures (not ambient) above 50 degrees F and below 105 degrees F. Below and above this range, problems can develop, and a dead, damaged, or . useless battery can be the result.

We've all noticed that under extremely cold conditions (below freezing), the battery will turn over the starter motor slowly, if at all. This is because when the internal temperature of the battery gets below the optimum range, the chemical reaction inside the battery happens more slowly, and for every 10-degree drop below freezing, the time that the chemical reaction takes doubles. Because of this increased resistance, the voltage in the battery drops and cannot turn over the engine.

Heat can also have an adverse effect on your battery's overall health. Battery power is reduced when it's subjected to excessive temperatures, but the problem may not be immediately noticed until the temperature drops. At higher temperatures, the chemical reaction within the battery is more rapid. The battery can produce more energy more quickly. This is good, right? Wrong. The higher rate of energy production results in an increase in off gassing; the water in the battery is vented out as hydrogen and oxygen molecules and the rate of internal corrosion, or sloughing, increases. This can result in a short in one or more cells that is not noticed until cold weather diminishes the overall ability of the battery.

What to Buy

When it comes to batteries for automotive use, there is no such thing as a perfect battery. Any battery can fail if it is neglected, constantly overloaded, or overcharged. The important thing to remember is to get the right battery for your needs, one that is rated for your vehicle and all the accessories you use. Generally, this means a high Ah, high CCA, and high reserve capacity. Also, make sure you buy a quality unit. Don't be fooled by the low price of the budget shops. Batteries sold in the no-name-battery discount stores often are poorly assembled and use inferior materials in the plates and separators. Name-brand batteries, such as AC-Delco, Sears DieHard, Exide, Interstate, Optima, and others, are manufactured to the highest standards, delivering high reliability combined with long life.

For off-road use, however, we feel that the recombination battery is the best overall, since it delivers high output, needs no maintenance, holds up well to the rigors of off-road driving, and has a quick recharge rate, as well as a long life span. It is a particularly useful battery for the off-roader because it has no liquid to leak out and can be mounted in any position (even upside down). Because of this, it won't corrode battery trays or cables and is safe in a collision. You can actually shoot a 45-caliber bullet through the battery casing and it will still crank at full power. Try that with a conventional battery, and you have a leaking mess that will at best produce minimal voltage.

BMW "No Reverse" Transmission Problem

An automatic transmission is just that- automatic, consequently most people tend to pay very little attention to it until a major problem rears its ugly head.

Picture the scenario- you are driving along in the lap of luxury, the satellite radio blaring and the heated seats on. You have become accustomed to the comfort level and great driving experience brought to you by BMW.

You decide to stop at the local convenience store on your way home to grab some ice cream for the kids and a bottle of water for yourself. Upon returning to your car, you start it up, check your rear view mirror, put the shifter in reverse and then the unthinkable happens- the engine just revs as if it is in neutral and the car goes nowhere!

This article deals with the reasons behind an unexpected loss of reverse in certain BMW automatic transmission equipped vehicles, specifically the 3 series and 5 series vehicles that use the ZF5HP19 or steptronic transmission. This includes the popular 323i, 323ci, 325i, 328i, 330i, 525i, 528i, 530i, X3 and X5 models well as some others built in the 1999 to present model years.

To eliminate confusion, this does not apply to vehicles equipped with the GM 5L40 E transmission, just the ones with the sometimes problematic ZF5HP19. The 5L40 E has some issues of its own that are beyond the scope of this article but are certainly going to be the subject of another.

The failure rate for these transmissions seems to be very high and is expected to become much more of a problem as time goes by.

Typically, the vehicle is working perfectly while driving forward but when it is put in reverse there is a complete and permanent loss of movement to back up.

Reverse is typically a major feat for any transmission to accomplish- imagine the demands that are placed on a gearbox as it is asked to reverse the torque of your engine so that you can back up your nearly 4000 pound vehicle.

By far, the most common cause of the reverse problem in BMW's is the failure of the D-G clutch drum. Specifically, the snap ring that retains the D or reverse clutch breaks out of the clutch drum resulting in an inability for the clutch pack to apply.

The good news is that there is hope in regards to a proper repair. The factory has released an updated part that so far appears to be a permanent fix for this problem.

In our testing and in conjunction with several hundred successful repairs at our facilities, the new part seems to be metallurgically superior in several ways.

We have found that there is an improved radius area as well as slightly thicker casting. In addition to this, the grove that retains the snap ring is also relocated further away from the edge of the drum.

With this issue addressed and attention to detail in several other areas of the ZF5HP19 unit, the transmission can be repaired to "better than new" condition by a competent transmission rebuilder / remanufacturer. Once you determine the required CCA, you'll need to measure the length, width, and height of the cavity to ensure a correct fit.
Removal and installation basics:
When the time comes to replace your motorcycle battery, never remove the battery while the engine is running. If for reason it does not have a charge, always remove the negative cable before the positive. When installing the new battery, reverse the order and connect the positive cable first before connecting the negative. Take extra caution to identify the positive and negative terminals before attaching the cables. Accidentally reversing the polarity can cause the battery to explode or inflict a great deal of damage to your bike's electrical system.
Recharging:
If the battery won't start or seems dull, you may only need to recharge it. Always check the voltage of your motorcycle battery before recharging and never charge your battery at an amperage more than 1/6 the rated capacity of your battery. For example, it you have a 7 amp-hour battery, you should not charge it at an amperage of more than 1 amps. If you have an 18 amp-hour battery, you can charge it at a maximum of 3 amps. Therefore, most battery tenders offer charging amperage of from 1/2 amp up to 2 amps. NOTE: NEVER USE AN AUTOMOBILE BATTERY CHARGER ON YOUR POWERSPORT SEALED BATTERY. Although recharging seems like a simple process, as a general rule of thumb always wear protective eye wear and refrain from smoking as you are working with explosive gasses.
You'll also want to ensure that there is no electrolyte covering the plates before adding water or recharging. Once you add the water, make sure that the vent caps are reinstalled before charging. Never recharge a motorcycle battery or any type of vehicle battery with the vent caps open. When you've finished charging, turn off the charger before removing the charger cables from the motorcycle battery.
Activating your new battery:
If you recently purchased a conventional battery, you may need to activate your motorcycle battery. Activating a non-sealed battery is the process of adding acid and charging the battery to the point of optimum functionality. To do this, remove the sealing tube and filling plugs, fill the battery with electrolyte, let the battery stand for about 30 minutes, then charge the battery for 3 to 5 hours at approximately 1/6 of the rated capacity. Sealed motorcycle batteries require much less maintenance and never require additional electrolyte.
If you find yourself needing to recharge your battery on a consistent basis, it's probably time to replace it to avoid getting stuck when you're ready to ride. To ensure that your new battery has a long life, it's imperative to find the right size for your bike and not to overcharge. Using a battery that is too large for your bike or overcharging the battery are the two most common causes reducing a battery's lifespan. ADA SUNGAI DI DALAM LAUT????

Sungai di dalam laut. Secara ilmiah itu tidak mungkin terjadi. Seorang penyelam, Anatoly Beloshchin, mengambil gambar 'sungai di dalam laut' dari kedalaman 60 meter perairan Cenote Angelita, Mexico.

Seperti dilansir crystalkiss.com, di kedalaman lebih dari 30 meter tim penyelam menemukan air tawar di tengah kolom air laut. Kondisi itu berubah dan penyelam kembali menemukan air laut mulai melewati kedalaman 60 meter.

Beberapa meter dari lokasi itu akan ditemukan sebuah gua. Di bagian bawah dekat gua itu tim penyelam menemukan sebuah sungai lengkap dengan pohon dan dedaunan yang mengapung di kolom air itu.

Ternyata lokasi itu bukanlah sungai seperti yang terlihat di daratan. Tetapi, suasana itu memang mirip sungai lengkap dengan lapisan seperti air yang berwarna agak kecoklatan.

Tapi tunggu dulu, warna kecoklatan itu bukanlah berasal dari air tawar. Disebutkan, bagian kecoklatan yang mirip air sungai itu adalah lapisan bagian bawah gas hidrogen sulfida. Gas yang biasanya dihasilkan dari saluran pembuangan kotoran.

Secara keseluruhan, tim penyelam menemukan itu adalah kondisi yang sangat mengejutkan dan menakjubkan untuk dipandang.

"Di kedalaman 60 meter saya menemukan kembali air laut. Saya melihat sebuah sungai, pulau, lengkap dengan daun yang berguguran. Tapi sungai yang kami lihat adalah lapisan dari gas hidrogen sulfida," kata Anatoly.

Ini dia yang bikin kecelele. Siapa pun yang melihat 'kumis bertingkat' ini pasti akan menyangka lambang ini mempunyai arti filosofis. Namun Andre Citroen sang pendiri punya jawaban "Ah nggak ada artinya tuh! hanya gambar mata gigi" pasalnya Citroen memang memulai usaha dengan membuat roda gigi.

Dipakai sejak tahun 1903, berasal dari desain kartu nama yang di buat Harold Wills, tangan kanan Henry Ford. Pada tahun 1912 di tambahkan beberapa oval mengelilingi kata Ford. Lalu warna biru mulai ditorehkan pada emblem saat peluncuran perdana Ford Model A pada tahun 1927.

Awalnya logo kuda jngkrak dipakai di pesawat tempur Italia, tunggangan Francesco Barraca yang gugur saat PD I. Orang tua sang pilot memberikan logo ini pada Enzo Ferrari supaya di pasang pada mobil balapnya. Akhirnya logo ini menjadi lambang setiap mobil Ferrari.

Bintang berbentuk tiga melambangkan dominasi dari tanah, air dan udara. Pemunculan pertama kali pada tahun 1909 kemudian diberi efek pantulan di tahun 1926 sebagai refleksi dari gabungan dua firma. Perkembangan terkahir hingga sekarang lingkaran menyelubungi bintang di mulai pada tahun 1937.

Apa hubungannya tiga berlian dengan kapal laut? Tiga berlian yang di jadikan logo Mitsubishi persamaan dari baling-baling kapal laut. Pasalnya pada tahun 1870 perusahaan ini bergerak dalam bidang industri kapal laut. Baru pada tahun 1917 Mitsubishi membuat mobil.

Gambar singa terpilih jadi emblem Peugeot, berasal dari lambang kota Belfort, Perancis. Kota yang bersebelahan dengan Jerman dan Swiss ini memiliki arti penting, karena salah satu produk awal mobil Peugeot diberi nama Lion-Peugeot.

Logo mobil karya Ferdinand Porsche ini mengambil lambang benteng pertahanan Stuttgart dan pasukan kerajaan Wurtemberg. Didominasi garis-garis berwarna hitam dan oranye.

Berlian terpilih menjadi emblem Renault. Mulanya Khusus di bonnet sebagai penutup klakson. Pada tahun 1922 bagian tengah berliannya dilubangi agar suara klakson bisa terdengar lebih nyaring. Dua tahun kemudian bentuknya berubah menjadi agak membulat hingga sekarang.

Asal kata Subaru adalah mutsuraboshi artinya enam bintang berkelompok. Sama dengan rasi Taurus yang dikenal dengan nama Plaiades.

PERSNELLING TERASA BERAT PADA MOTOR VESPA

Tangan terasa pegal saat berkendara pada motor vespa seringkali terdengar karena persneling distang sebelah kiri terasa berat diputar apalagi ketikan menghadapi kemacaten lalu lintas di jalan tangan bisa jadi gede sebelah tuh, padahal sebenarnya persnelingnya bisa dibuat menjadi lebih enteng dengan memotong per persnelingnya. Komponen ini berfungsi sebagai penahan piringan pemindah gigi, nah mau tahu caranya?

Pertama

Awali dengan membuka tutup bak persneling yang terletak dibawah kipas, supaya lebih leluasa copot juga tutup kipasnya. Kemudian tarik per keluar pakai tang jepit, atau bisa juga di cungkil memakai obeng minus, perlu hati-hati pada saat mencungkil per tersebut untuk menghindari per melompat keluar (lihat gbr.1)

Kedua

Potong per menggunakan tang potong (lihat gbr.2) lalu tarik lagi supaya panjang per menjadi sama panjang seperti yang semula. Karena ulir pernya sudah berkurang sekarang pern nya menjadi lebih lembut dan gerakan persnelingpun akan menjadi lebih enteng.
Hal yang perlu diperhatikan adalah pada saat memotong ulir jangan terlau banyak cukup potong dua ulir saja karena jika lebih dari itu per akan terlalu empuk hal ini bisa berbahaya karena persneling jadi terlalu sensitif dan gigi bisa berpindah sendiri.

Sekarang saya rasa keluhan tentang persneling pada motor Vespa akan berkurang, semoga tips kali ini bisa membantu anda.

Detroit Auto Show 2010

The AutoWeek editorial staff has named Ford’s next-generation Focus the "Most Significant" vehicle of the 2010 North American International Auto Show. High praise indeed, considering the number of excellent cars and trucks at this month’s annual gathering in Detroit. The popular auto show hosted nearly 40 new vehicle premieres.

"This was a unanimous vote, one of the few in the history of the AutoWeek award," said Wes Raynal, editor of AutoWeek and autoweek.com. "This car gives Ford and Focus fans their car back. By that we mean enthusiasts have been crying for the European Focus for years and we’re finally getting our wish. We also think it’s a perfect platform for an SVT version. The car goes on sale in 2011 powered by a sporty four-cylinder engine mated to a DSG transmission, and we can’t wait to drive it."

The next-generation Ford Focus

The next-generation Ford Focus made its worldwide debut Monday, Jan. 11 at the 2010 North American International Auto Show. Scheduled to go on sale in both North America and Europe early in 2011, the new Focus will offer customers more affordable technologies and features than ever in this segment, noteworthy levels of craftsmanship, outstanding fuel economy and a new standard for driving quality.

The prestigious AutoWeek award is being presented just three days after Ford received both the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards for the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and 2010 Ford Transit Connect, respectively.

"We are delighted and humbled with the initial response to the next-generation Ford Focus," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president for Global Product Development. "The new Focus is a direct result of our new global product development system and perhaps the best example yet of what we believe a global Ford product should be – great to look at, great to sit in and great to drive. This is truly ONE Ford in action."

Sleek, stylish and sporty, the new Focus will eventually be sold in 122 markets, with up to 80 percent parts commonality. The Focus will be built on Ford’s new C-car platform, which will underpin up to 10 unique models and generate sales of 2 million units annually.

The next-generation Ford Focus will be on public display at NAIAS – along with other award-winning Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles – in Detroit’s Cobo Hall through Jan. 24.

2010 Formula One Season

There have been lots of rumors this week in the world of Formula One for the final six seats available for 2010, but for those looking for real movement, there were no announcements.

The biggest names still looking for a ride this F1 season are former Toyota driver Jarno Trulli, Ferrari reserve driver Giancarlo Fisichella, and 2009 Sauber BMW driver Nick Heidfeld. Currently, they all are lined up at Sauber trying to grab that second seat. It appears though that Ferrari's presence as a supplier to the team will help move Fisichella to the front of the line.

Whoever doesn't get picked at Sauber will likely be working the Renault option and lobbying for that second seat.

After that....

USF1 has two unfilled seats, we'd suggest aspiring drivers bring cash. Over at Campos, the team has at least one unfilled seat, and we'd suggest those looking at the ride to bring more cash. Rumors continue to circulate that Campos can't finish the season without some significant financial backing.

And rumors surrounding both USF1 and Campos won't go away after Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone did neither team any favors after suggesting two of the four won't make the Bahrain season opener. Even more interesting, after Campos and USF1 defended their futures, Ecclestone re-stated that he didn't see two of the four new teams making the 2010 opening grid.

As for Toro Rosso, its clear that seat will go to some young and up-coming driver, its just not clear which one.

Camaro Synergy Special Edition 2010

Hot and cool exterior colors are a part of Chevy Camaro history. Now the 2010 model is getting its own. Chevrolet today debuts the Camaro Synergy Special Edition with pricing starting at $26,790. Synergy will be produced in limited quantities from February to May.

"Synergy Green continues a long tradition of dramatic Camaro colors," says Camaro historian Scott Settlemire. "Some of the most sought-after Camaros are first generation cars – those from 1967 to 1969 – in Hugger Orange, Daytona Yellow, and Rallye Green."

The 2010 Camaro Synergy Special Edition is based on a Camaro 1LT, with a 3.6L direct injection V-6, paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The powertrain has become a benchmark for the segment by offering a combination of performance and efficiency: The V-6 delivers 304 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, and returns up to 29 mpg on the highway.

The Synergy Green exterior color was first previewed at the 2009 Specialty Equipment Manufacturers (SEMA) show. In production form, the Synergy Green is accented by Cyber Grey Rally Stripes running the length of the Camaro hood and rear deck. Other exterior features include a standard rear spoiler, and standard 19 inch, Sterling Silver painted wheels wrapped with P245/50R19 tires.

The color scheme is mirrored on the interior, with Synergy Green instrument panel and door inserts. Synergy Green stitching also accents the Jet Black cloth seats, steering wheel, shift knob and center console.

"Just as those colors helped make the first generation Camaro an icon, modern colors like Inferno Orange, Rallye Yellow Transformers Edition and Synergy Green will define the 2010 Camaro," Settlemire said.

The Special Edition also includes the Camaro Convenience and Connectivity Package, with Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB port for MP3 players, and remote vehicle start for models equipped with an automatic transmission.

"The Synergy Special Edition package is designed for customers who want a unique performance car at an attainable price," says Camaro marketing manager John Fitzpatrick. "For under $27,000, Camaro Synergy Special Edition offers standout styling, modern technologies like Bluetooth, and 304 horsepower under the hood."

Nissan Maxima

The 2009 Nissan Maxima, which makes its world debut at the 2008 New York International Auto Show, marks a return to the longtime Nissan flagship sedan's roots as a commanding 4-door sports car - a vehicle that is unique in both appearance and driving feel, with renewed relevance for today's active and ambitious sedan buyers. In other words, the Maxima is back.

The all-new 2009 Nissan Maxima will be offered as two well-equipped models, Maxima 3.5 S and Maxima 3.5 SV, and is scheduled to arrive at Nissan dealers nationwide in early summer 2008.

2009 Nissan Maxima: Reborn at the "Ring"

"Do-overs" are sometimes allowed in sports but rarely in the automotive industry. Yet midway through the development of the new-generation Maxima a mulligan was indeed granted. Rather than continue with an evolution of the previous highly successful Maxima design, the creators of the 2009 Nissan Maxima stopped and rethought the entire direction.

Inspired by the concurrent top secret development of the 2009 Nissan GT-R supercar, they threw away positioning words like "conservative" and "balanced" and concentrated instead on new concepts like "addictive performance," "striking," "commanding" and "powerful."

High targets were established, including the goal of creating "the best performing front engine, front-wheel drive car in the world," along with class-leading acceleration, braking, handling, workmanship and cockpit design.

"However, complacency breeds complacent vehicles. The new Maxima demanded taking risks in order to ultimately come up with a much more exciting and rewarding vehicle."

Three key areas were singled out for change: exterior design, which needed to be more aggressive, with more personality and attitude; a "super" cockpit, creating an interior that combines a driver orientation with high quality, roominess and user-friendly technology; and class-leading performance, enhancing what previous generation owners called "Maxima-ness."

To further push the performance envelope, the development team challenged themselves to concentrate their efforts on "emotional engineering" - to experience Maxima with the five senses in a purer, more visceral manner, rather than through CAD drawings and computer simulations.

As each designer and engineer set and exceeded higher and higher targets, they realized that confirmation of the results would require validation on the road. But not just any road. Members of the development team traveled to Germany's famed Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit - not coincidentally the site of much of the GT-R's performance development work - to test Maxima prototypes. Special attention was placed on body rigidity, suspension and steering, along with honing Maxima's competitiveness against some well-established European sports sedans.

"A number of product changes came directly from the Nürburgring trials, including enhancements to the braking and transmission systems "But more importantly, it gave notice to the entire Nissan organization that the new Maxima is back solidly in the performance arena where it rightfully belongs."

Aggressive Design Adds a "Wow" Factor to the Sedan Category

While seeking to create a simple-yet-strong presence, the designers of the new Maxima's exterior also wanted to re-assert Maxima's breakthrough personality - establishing a "wow" level of style that would clearly distinguish it from segment competitors.

The exterior design theme for the new Maxima is "Liquid Motion" - focusing on the flow of its powerful and beautiful surfaces, like the undulation of a wave. The look starts with Maxima's aggressive stance and powerful fender volume, which is not unlike many exotic sports cars on the market today. This deeply sculpted body/fender treatment is seldom used for mass market vehicles because of the engineering and manufacturing complexity required to physically accomplish it. Maxima's new stance is created by a slight reduction in wheelbase and overall length, along with a wider front and rear track.

Maxima's new look imparts a strong, premium presence. The large, wraparound L-shaped headlights add a unique dimension to the overall design, while the light surrounds suggest a powerful "turbine" appearance of energy and strength. The upturned headlight shape combines with a wide grille, large bumper opening and bulging "catamaran-style" hood to give Maxima a formidable expression, setting the tone for the rest of the vehicle.

The powerful Maxima form continues along its profile, with careful layering of the bumper, hood and fender parting lines. The polished, elegant motion spreads from the deep-waisted rear fenders through distinctive Maxima-style C-pillars and high trunk lid.

Dimensionally, versus the previous generation, the new Maxima measures the same width at the doors but wider at each fender, which not only helps project a sporty appearance but also allows a reduction in the visual gap between the fenders and wheels and tires. Maxima's dynamic performance stance is accented by 18-inch and available 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with low-profile performance tires.

Another new styling feature is the available Dual Panel Moonroof, which is traditionally offered only in luxury segments. The Dual Panel Moonroof includes a front section that moves like a normal moonroof (positioned farther forward than typical), with a very wide opening to provide an open-air motoring feeling. There is also a fixed translucent rear section that provides light to rear seat passengers. The overall design gives the appearance that the entire roof is composed of black glass. The Dual Panel Moonroof includes dual power sunshades for both the front and rear glass sections, adding a level of convenience.

At the rear, Maxima features a new 12-LED L-shaped taillight design, with a pair of side marker bulbs for added visibility during night driving.

Maxima is available in a choice of eight exterior colors: Winter Frost, Super Black, Navy Blue, Tuscan Sun, Radiant Silver, Mystic Jade, Precision Gray and Dark Slate.

Leading-Edge Sports Sedan Performance Platform

For five previous generations, Maxima has been built on a front-wheel drive (FWD) platform. Yet with the new Maxima's development team everything was open for discussion, including the benefits of front-wheel drive versus rear-wheel drive (RWD). Although there are well-known advantages of RWD in terms of sporty handling, it was ultimately decided that by switching Maxima from its previous platform to Nissan's new "D platform," which was first introduced on the current Nissan Altima Sedan, Hybrid and Coupe, the target Maxima performance could be delivered - without giving up the added FWD benefits of lower costs, lower weight and enhanced roominess versus a RWD platform.

As demonstrated time and again with the new Altima, the new Nissan D platform is an amazing piece of engineering - providing responsive handling while virtually eliminating the torque steer often associated with high horsepower FWD applications, "For the new Maxima, we've continued to refine the D platform, creating what we believe is one of the best-performing front-wheel drive car in the world, far above other FWD vehicles in its class. It's a level of performance that we think will be highly addictive."

In creating driving performance worthy of Nissan's flagship, the Maxima's body and chassis engineering teams worked together to create a secure feeling, virtually no torque steer during acceleration and a level of nimbleness that ultimately makes a car fun to drive.

A range of enhancements helped achieve these targets, including increasing body rigidity and adjusting the wheelbase and track dimensions. Body rigidity was increased by 15 percent and front strut mounting rigidity was increased by 100 percent, with all-new structures added to the engine compartment and additional reinforcement applied to the instrument panel structure. Maximas equipped with the Sport or Premium Packages feature a panel behind the rear seat that improves torsional rigidity by 17 percent versus models with a fold-down rear seat (a rear trunk pass-through is utilized with this panel).

The 2009 Nissan Maxima has a wheelbase of 109.3 inches, a decrease of 1.9 inches versus the 2008 Maxima, and width has been increased by 1.5 inches to 73.2 inches. The front and rear track measurement of 62.4 inches represents increases of 1.4 inches front and 1.2 inches rear over the previous model.

Additional "D platform" enhancements include the use of aluminum suspension links, revised suspension geometry, new technology shocks, revised steering and suspension geometries, a lower engine mounting and application of a new Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission), all of which contribute to minimal torque steer and improved handling prowess.

A Refined Engine and CVT

Compared to the previous generation, the new Maxima offers more horsepower and torque, providing quicker acceleration response and a special "Maxima Sound" - a satisfying, sporty sounding exhaust note. For 2009, Maxima again features a standard 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine, enhanced and refined to take its driving performance to new levels.

The revised engine features a modular engine design with microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, a resin intake collector, digital knock control, six individual coils (one per spark plug) and a cross-flow coolant pattern. Also utilized are a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), a variable induction system, a silent timing chain and electronically controlled throttle.

In refining the award-winning VQ-series V6 for use in the new Maxima, engine development engineers focused on three areas - increasing air intake, increasing fuel burn efficiency and lowering exhaust backpressure. Steps utilized to improve air intake included increasing intake manifold collector port diameter, adding a second power valve in the intake manifold, changing intake collector material to resin for less mass and more flow, redesigning the shape of the intake valves and increasing the throttle chamber diameter. Fuel burn efficiency was improved by increasing the engine's compression ratio to 10.6:1 (from 10.3:1), changing the piston shape for reduction of friction and weight, and adding exhaust-side continuous valve timing control (quad valve timing system). Exhaust backpressure was reduced through optimizing the exhaust system layout.

The 2009 Nissan Maxima's 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 is now rated at 290 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque (estimated), increases of 35 horsepower and 9 lb-ft of torque over the 2008 Maxima.

Significant development time was also spent on enhancing the sporty engine sound for an increased "exhilaration feeling." The new Maxima also utilizes additional sound absorption material and a new "sound creator" to enhance induction sound. Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance has been improved through a number of measures, including adoption of a new six-point engine mounting system. The system, which replaces the previous generation Maxima's four-point mounting, includes upper and lower torque rods, high rigidity front and rear aluminum brackets and front and rear switchable control mounts to improve NVH performance under high engine torque conditions.

All 2009 Nissan Maximas come equipped with a revised Xtronic CVT™ with manual mode, tuned specifically for Maxima's sporty driving character. The Maxima development team finessed the previous CVT design to improve responsiveness and strike a balance between sport and comfort, ultimately creating a transmission that provides a true synergy between engine and transmission, along with smooth, responsive and efficient operation.

For drivers seeking the utmost in vehicle control, a new "Ds mode" (drive sport) has been added to the CVT for 2009. "Ds mode" is an electronic control logic, that enhances sport driving through increased acceleration feel with higher engine revolutions, automatic engine braking and maintaining engine speed during cornering.

Also offered are an array of technology and convenience features, including the first-ever Z® Roadster-available heating and cooling ventilated net seats, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, satellite radio and advanced Nissan Navigation System. The 2010 370Z Roadster is scheduled to go on sale at Nissan retailers nationwide in late summer.

The Nissan 370Z Roadster's most obvious departure from the 370Z Coupe is its convertible top. The soft-top roof was designed with an emphasis on three key areas: to provide a sleek silhouette matching the new Z®'s stunning styling with the top up or down, to offer easy single-action open-close operation, and to provide an enjoyable top-down experience with reduced wind turbulence and all-climate driver/passenger comfort.

With convertible top in the closed position, the design provides a sophisticated sloped-back appearance, the perfect balance between the soft top and the Z® body design. The shortened windshield and aerodynamically rounded rear deck enhance the Z®'s kinetic and dynamic character lines. When in the down position, the convertible top is concealed beneath a full body-color hard tonneau cover, which extends forward to help create the Z® Roadster's classic "double cockpit" style interior.

The standard black cloth convertible top features a fabric inner liner, which provides a quality appearance and helps reduce noise intrusion into the cabin, along with an enlarged (versus the previous generation Z® Roadster) glass rear window with an integrated electric rear window defroster. The top operation takes approximately 20 seconds start-to-finish and is controlled by either a center console-mounted switch or by a button located on the doors. The automatic latch system secures the top to - or releases it from - the windshield header without driver intervention. The shape and position of the glass wind deflector, located between the fixed headrest bars, has been optimized to reduce turbulence into the cabin.

Like the new 370Z Coupe, the Z® Roadster's new exterior is more aggressive in appearance and lighter and tighter in structure than the previous generation. The wheelbase is nearly four inches shorter (100.4 inches versus 104.3 inches) and overall length is reduced by 2.6 inches (167.2 inches versus 169.8 inches). The new Z® Roadster features an aluminum hood, door panels and trunk for reduced weight. At the same time, the body structure was extensively revised, improving rigidity and stability. The Nissan 370Z Roadster includes additional structural reinforcement (over the 370Z Coupe), including in the A-pillars and side sills.

The Z® Roadster's exterior design incorporates the look and feel of the new Z® Coupe, including its signature long nose/short cockpit proportions, vertical door handles and distinctive new headlight/taillight treatment, which features a fierce "boomerang" shape. High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon headlights with auto on/off feature are standard.

The Nissan 370Z Roadster is offered in seven exterior colors: Solid Red, Magnetic Black, Brilliant Silver, Platinum Graphite, Pearl White, Monterey Blue and a special premium color, Black Cherry.

Inside the stunning exterior, true to its sports car heritage, the Z® Roadster's interior is completely driver-centric, with its three-layer design grouping items by how a driver sees information, operates the controls and is held in place - so drivers feel completely connected and engaged whenever and wherever they drive, top up or down.

The Z® Roadster features high back black woven "Carbon" cloth seats with 8-way manual driver's/4-way manual passenger's seat adjustments. Touring models include unique leather-appointed "net" seats with 4-way power/4-way manual operation on the driver's seat (4-way power on the passenger's seat). These second-generation net seats are exclusive to the Z® Roadster and have integrated heating and cooling functions - ideal for open air driving no matter what the outside temperature. Adjustable front seat Active Head Restraints are also standard.

The Z® Roadster's 2-seat layout includes a deeply scooped instrument panel with a full-length center console separating the driver and passenger's seat. The instrument panel retains the traditional Z® 3-pod cluster with oil temperature, voltmeter and clock, while the speedometer and tachometer now include an "initial sweep" function, coming alive when the car is first started.

The sporty steering wheel is a new "oval" 3-spoke design, which offers baseball-style stitching, improved thumb grips and palm rest areas for improved feel on long drives. The surface of the leather-wrapped wheel is "shaved" to provide a more kidney-like shape to better fit in the hand. The manual transmission shifter is specially padded to improve the accuracy of diagonal shifts and to feel softer in the hand for forward and backward motions.

Standard interior comfort and convenience features include Nissan Intelligent Key™ with Push Button Ignition, power windows with one-touch auto up/down feature, power door locks with auto-lock feature and a center console box with a non-intrusive cover design. Other features include automatic climate control, two 12-volt power outlets, three cupholders (two in door panels, one in center console) and an AM/FM/CD/AUX 4-speaker audio system with illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls.

The Touring model adds a 6CD Bose® audio system with eight speakers (includes dual subwoofer) and MP3/WMA playback, XM™ Satellite Radio (XM™ subscription required, sold separately), Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, HomeLink™ Universal Transceiver and aluminum-trimmed pedals. This is the first time Bluetooth® and XM™ satellite radio have been available on a Z® Convertible.

The optional Navigation Package includes the touch-screen Nissan Hard Drive Navigation System with XM NavTraffic™ real-time traffic information (XM™ subscription required, sold separately), 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for digital music storage and playback and a USB fort for iPod® connectivity. The new navigation system offers a number of enhancements (versus previous Nissan Navigation System designs), including four times higher screen resolution, wireless music player audio streaming capability (via Bluetooth®), on-board Zagat restaurant ratings database, an in-dash DVD player and XM NavWeather™ weather information display (XM™ subscription required, sold separately). The Nissan 370Z Roadster interior is available in Black cloth or for 370Z Touring Roadster models, a choice of Gray, Black or Wine leather-appointed net seating.

Open Air, Open Roads - An Unbeatable Combination

Roadster or Coupe, the new Z®s share one of the most advanced drivetrains available for affordable sports cars today. The Z® Roadster's long list of cutting edge performance-focused technologies includes a standard 332-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL), choice of 7-speed automatic transmission or close-ratio 6-speed manual with available "SynchroRev Match" (the world's first synchronized downshift rev matching manual transmission), refined 4-wheel independent suspension and 4-wheel vented disc brakes (with available Nissan Sport Brakes).

Compared to the previous generation 350Z Roadster, the new Z® convertible picks up 26 horsepower and 2 lb-ft of torque (332 horsepower @ 7,000 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpm, compared with the previous 3.5-liter V6's 306 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm and 268 lb-ft of toque @ 4,800 rpm).

Along with its larger displacement, the 3.7-liter engine gives better power delivery all the way to the 7,500 rpm redline, improved low-end power and more high-end torque, creating an entirely new driving experience. Key to the enhanced performance is the VVEL system, which is able to optimize intake valve open/close movements, allowing the needed air to be sent promptly to the combustion chamber at the precisely optimized time. Since the VVEL system can adjust to open the valves slightly, it improves fuel efficiency by reducing camshaft friction and fuel waste. It also provides cleaner emissions by allowing for quicker warm-up of the catalyst and by stabilizing combustion when the engine is cool.

The 2010 Z® Roadster is offered with a choice of two new advanced transmissions - a close-ratio 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic. The 6-speed manual is available with SynchroRev Match™ (included in the optional Sport Package), which allows drivers of any skill level to experience professional-like gear shift performance. The SynchroRev Match™ function automatically controls and adjusts engine speed when shifting to the exact speed of the next gear position, essentially "blipping" the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts. This not only allows the driver to focus more on braking and steering, it improves vehicle balance and smoothness by reducing the typical "shock" when the clutch is engaged. The system can be deactivated with a button next to the shifter for drivers who prefer less vehicle intervention.

The available 7-speed automatic includes Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) and is designed to offer quick, manual-like shifting when operated in manual mode. Drivers can use the standard paddle shifters or the shift lever. The 7-speed's wide gear ratios offer improved fuel efficiency, while the Adaptive Shift Control is designed to adjust to the driver's driving style.

Estimated fuel economy for the Nissan 370Z Roadster is 18 mpg City/25 mpg Highway for both the 7-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions - increases of 1 mpg City/2 mpg Highway for the automatic and 1 mpg City/1 mpg Highway for the manual transmission versus the 2009 350Z Roadster.

The Z® Roadster also utilizes the Z® Coupe's advanced 4-wheel independent suspension. The double-wishbone front suspension (which replaces the lower multi-link setup in the 350Z) uses lighter forged aluminum arms and a lightweight rigid aluminum-alloy cradle, along with a lighter stabilizer bar with a 35 percent improved lever ratio. The 4-link rear suspension is also stiffer and lighter, with the rear cradle entirely integrated into a single part. "High response" shock absorbers are utilized on each corner for improved ride comfort.

The standard Nissan 370Z Roadster wheel and tire package features 18x8.0-inch front/18x9.0-inch lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels with P225/50R18 front/P245/45R18 rear Bridgestone Potenza RE050A summer tires. Available as part of the optional Sport Package are 19-inch RAYS forged lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A P245/40R19 front/P275/35R19 tires.

The Z®'s standard 4-wheel vented disc brake system includes Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). The optional Sport Package includes Nissan Sport Brakes with large diameter 14.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors (versus 12.6-inch front/rear standard rotors) with 4-piston front and 2-piston rear aluminum calipers.

Steering is provided by a vehicle-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion design. Unwanted steering kickback and vibrations are reduced with the addition of a solenoid valve that acts like a damper when there is a harsh impact load. A Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is standard. The Nissan 370Z Roadster's list of standard safety features includes the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt and occupant classification sensors; front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags; door-mounted curtain air bags; and seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters. Other standard equipment includes Active Head Restraints, Zone Body Construction with front and rear crumple zones, Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System, Vehicle Security System and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Two Well-Equipped Models

The new Z® Roaster is offered in two well-equipped models - Nissan 370Z Roadster and the 370Z Touring Roadster. How did Hyundai improve Hyundai Accent's EPA fuel economy for 2010 without adding thousands of dollars to the price like a hybrid does? The answer is the introduction of the high mileage "Blue" edition and smart engineering to all Accent models. Hyundai Accent's fuel efficiency is improved by up to nine percent, reaching as high as 36 miles per gallon on the highway which is better than Honda Fit and Nissan Versa.

All 2010 Hyundai Accent receive lower friction engine components, aerodynamic improvements, lower-rolling-resistance silica tires, a "smart" alternator management system and other enhancements all aimed at reducing fuel consumption. The Hyundai Accent Blue receives the same treatment plus revised transmission gear ratios and lowered ride height to achieve even greater fuel efficiency. In fact, the Blue edition is the lowest priced Hyundai Accent, starting around $10,000. It also has the highest highway fuel economy with 36 miles per gallon and the highest combined fuel economy 31 miles per gallon, achieving one of the highest MPG-per-dollar ratios in the industry. This new high mileage Hyundai Accent will be identified with unique "Blue" badging.

Hyundai has added an economy indicator. The "eco indicator" on automatic transmission models is a green ECO light to indicate when the driver is achieving good fuel economy. Manual transmission models have a EcoShift indicator to inform drivers of the optimal time to shift.

NEW EQUIPMENT

Steering wheel audio controls, blue back-lit gauges and an iPod/USB jack also make debuts on Hyundai Accent. Now when an iPod is connected to the iPod/USB port, located in the front storage area, not only does it play music through the vehicle's six-speaker audio system, but also charges the iPod. The iPod/USB input also allows the driver to access tracks with the new steering wheel audio controls. This new system also enables both driver and passengers to easily view song/artist/title information and control the music from the audio head unit rather than from the iPod itself.

INTERIOR SPACE AND UNEXPECTED FEATURES

Interior space and unexpected features keep Hyundai Accent a class above the competition. The Hyundai Accent has more total interior volume than either the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic - both cars that are a vehicle class above Hyundai Accent and priced thousands of dollars more. ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES

In a bold stroke in this price-sensitive market segment, Hyundai has outfitted the Hyundai Accent with state-of-the-art standard safety technologies highlighted by six airbags, including dual front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags covering both rows of seating. The combination of side and curtain airbags, which help protect the head and body during side impacts, can reduce fatalities by more than 45 percent according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). All Hyundai Accent come equipped with front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, which are designed to tighten the seatbelt in the event of a collision. This safety package helped the Accent GLS four-door receive a five-star frontal crash safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) is optional on the GS and GLS and standard on the SE.

REFINED AND CONFIDENT DESIGN

Hyundai designers gave the Hyundai Accent GLS a distinctive look within its market segment. Upscale details like a chrome-accented grille combine with bold tail lights and strong character lines to deliver a standout presence. The roof-mounted flexible micro-antenna not only looks good, but also provides improved radio and satellite reception.

Externally, the three-door Accent reflect Hyundai's sleek, confident design direction. Up front, the Blue, GS and SE feature an aggressive bodycolor grille with fog lights standard on the SE. Hyundai Accent's interior finish, attention to detail and color options have reset expectations in its market segment. There's a handsome two-tone interior color scheme with either a gray or beige theme, or a sporty, black monotone interior that is available on Hyundai Accent three-door. Analog instrumentation keeps the driver informed, while power steering, a tilt steering wheel and a six-way adjustable driver's seat with fold-down armrest ensure long-haul comfort. CLEAN, FUEL EFFICIENT ENGINE

The Hyundai Accent is powered by a 1.6-liter DOHC in-line four cylinder engine that features four valves per cylinder with CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing). The DOHC and CVVT combination gives the engine a very broad powerband, coupled with high fuel efficiency and low emissions.

With better breathing from the CVVT system, performance peaks at 110 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and torque is 106 lb.-ft. at 4,500 rpm. At 110 horsepower, Hyundai Accent makes more horsepower than Yaris and Aveo. Fuel economy is equally impressive, achieving 36 mpg regardless of transmission choice. With a manual transmission, the Hyundai Accent Blue's EPA mileage is 27 mpg City and 36 mpg Highway. With the optional four-speed automatic transmission, the Hyundai Accent's 2010 EPA rating is 27 mpg City and 36 mpg Highway besting Versa and Fit on the highway.

Besides the added performance it provides, CVVT also helps the engine operate more cleanly, and the Hyundai Accent is certified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV). ACCENT GLS

To simplify the buying process, the four-door Hyundai Accent sedan comes in a single GLS trim level with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. GLS trim offers a wide range of features, including several items that are either optional or unavailable on competitive vehicles such as a powerful 110-horsepower 1.6-liter CVVT engine, power steering, rear coat hook, 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback, AM/FM/XM /CD/MP3 audio system with auxiliary iPod/USB inputs, driver and passenger illuminated vanity mirrors and standard air conditioning. There are a total of six airbags, including dual front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof mounted side-curtain airbags. Carpeted floor mats are optional. The GLS Premium Package includes ABS with EBD, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, power windows, mirrors, door locks, steering wheel audio controls and remote keyless entry with alarm and panic alert.

WARRANTY

The 2010 Hyundai Accent is protected by the Hyundai Advantage, America's Best Warranty. Coverage includes five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper protection,

10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, and seven-year/unlimited mileage anti-perforation coverage. In addition, Hyundai Accent buyers receive 24-hour roadside assistance coverage at no extra charge for five years (no mileage limit) and that service includes emergency towing, lockout service and limited coverage for trip-interruption expenses. There is no deductible on any of these coverages.
