It’s happened! My Berry has been nuked (I also use one that starts with an F and ends in an ED and has a CK in the middle). I’ve found the solution over the interne and summarize it:

Pre Wipe Task

Download and install Jl_Cmder to your PC (JL Commander)

Make sure ALL your data (i.e. contacts, appointments, memos and etc) are backed up or synced before proceeding! This will wipe everything off of the device

Make sure you have the latest version of both Desktop Manager and the Handheld OS installed on your PC. If you need them then download them from here: http://www.crackberry.com/blackberry-os

From the PC navigate to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file vendor.xmlIf you have never installed the Handheld OS before then the vendor.xml file will not be on the PC and you can skip this step

Plug the device into the PC using the USB cord and make sure Desktop Manager is closed

Remove the battery from the device

Wipe the Device

Wipe the device using Jl_CmderThis may take several attempts to connect to the device, so keep trying until it connects and wipe

The device will reboot to a white screen with a ’507′ error

If the device will not connect and wipe after several attempts then please follow the instructions here:

Disconnect the device from the PCDownload and install Desktop Manager and the Handheld OS to the PC (if they have not already been installed)

Desktop Manager and Handheld OS List

Command Line Tasks

Start a Command Prompt in DOS from the PC (Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt)

Change the directory to: Program Files>>Common Files>>Research In Motion>>AppLoader

If you do not know how to navigate to this directory follow instructions below:
From C:\ >prompt type:
cd Program Files <hit enter>
cd Common Files <hit enter>
cd Research In Motion <hit enter>
cd AppLoader <hit enter>

Make sure Desktop Manager is not running

Connect BlackBerry to the PC

Enter the following command in the Command Prompt window:loader.exe /nojvm

Installation

The Application Loader Wizard window will open

Click on Next

You will get a drop down list with the COM ports and one USB port entry

Select the one which says USB:UNKNOWN

If you do not see USB:UNKNOWN or USB:BBPIN, then follow instructions listed below:

Disconnect the device from the PC.

Keep the Application Loader Wizard window open

Remove the battery and put it back

While the red led is on, reconnect the device to the PC. The led will only stay on for a few seconds

When USB:UNKNOWN appears in the drop down list, you need to immediately select NextThe loader should now connect to your device and you will be able to reinstall the OS

This article has been published by William Edwards.
Directory services are integral to any business. They allow you to have a central authentication platform and provide you with an interface to enforce software policies and various other configurations. In many cases businesses are forced to use the sometimes costly Microsoft Active Directory for their directory services and domain controllers because they are unaware of any other alternatives. In this article, I’m going to show you how you can setup your own domain controller using Zentyal (formerly known as eBox), a free, open source, Linux-based Small Business Server.

Zentyal allows you to manage all your computer network services through one single platform. Zentyal is a fully integrated Network Gateway, Unified Threat Manager, Office Server, Infrastructure Manager, and Unified Communications Server all in one package. They also provide professional support services so you will always have a support path for critical issues in your environment.

Instructions

Getting the Software

You can download the latest version of Zentyal by downloading the disc ISO on their website, and selecting the appropriate architecture:

http://www.zentyal.org/downloads/

Installation

Step 1

After downloading the appropriate ISO, burn the image file to a CD and insert it into the server you wish to install Zentyal. Boot to the CD and select “Install Zentyal”

Step 2

Accept the default installation settings until you are asked to enter in the hostname. Enter in the desired hostname and admin username/password of the Zentyal server and continue to accept the default installation settings until the installation has completed.

Step 3

Once the installation has completed, you can use your web browser to navigate to the Zentyal web interface by typing in https://<your-server-ip>/ . From here, log in to the web interface using the username and password you set up during the installation:

Configuration

Step 1

Once you log in for the first time, you can select the server roles you would like to install. Select “Infrastructure” and “Office” and select “Install”

Step 2

After the server roles are installed, you will be asked to configure various other parts of the server. When you are asked what type of server you wish to configure, select “Standalone server”.

Complete the rest of the configuration prompts until you reach the dashboard.

Step 3

Add a new user under “Users and Groups” -> “Users” and fill out the user information for your domain admin account. Then select “Add and Edit”

Step 4

Enable Administration rights for your domain admin account and select “Change”

Step 5

Select “File Sharing” from the left menu and ensure that the “Enable PDC” checkbox is checked. Here you can also configure the domain name, quota limit, roaming profiles, and other features of your domain controller. Make sure that your client computers can resolve the domain name specified here correctly.

Step 6

That’s it! You can now start using your Zentyal server as a domain controller. Now all you need to do is add your Windows clients to the domain by going to “System Properties”-> “Computer Name” and typing in the domain name you specified. You can then use the domain admin credentials we created earlier to add the computer to the domain.

You can add additional users and groups using the “Users and Groups” menu in the Zentyal web interface, and you can specify additional settings under the PDC settings in the “File Sharing” menu.

Enjoy using your new domain controller!

Another nice post from the Internet (Credit goes to: Eduard Ezeanu)

Make no mistake about it: effective management is a challenge. There are many managers, but there are few good managers. I believe the foundation of becoming a good manager is, first of all, understanding what makes a good manager.

In my communication coaching work, I often help managers identify and develop key management skills. In my experience, most managers only have a vague and inaccurate idea of what makes a good manager and in what direction to take their growth.

I’ll often hear statements from managers such as: “I need to improve my communication skills”. Well, there are a lot of communication skills. Which ones specifically? This is the kind of question you can answer much better by knowing yourself and comprehending what makes a good manager.

The 6 Qualities of a Good Manager

I have pinpointed six skills that I consider essential for any person who manages people and projects. Interestingly enough, five of them are people skills. Here are the six essential skills, listed and explained:

1. Clear Communication

As a manager, it’s crucial to aid make the flow of information clear and effective. This can be done by having a clear-cut style of communication, by using accurate words to express facts and ideas, and also assisting the people you work with to do the same.

If as a manager, you say to a member of your team “I want that sales report soon” when what you want to say is “I want that sales report tomorrow by 12PM”, you’re in trouble. A clear communication style defines good management at its roots.

2. Assertive Communication

This is one of my favorite communication skills, and for good reason: I see it as the fundamental communication skill for both managers and employees.

Assertive communication is the ability to express your thoughts, ideas, wants and emotions in a straightforward, non-hesitant way, while also being tactful and respectful of the other person.

Communicating assertively often starts with mastering the previous skill, but it goes way beyond this. It means creating a win-win blend in the communication with a wide range of individuals, which is very powerful and, unfortunately, very rare.

3. Creating a Connection

Business may ultimately be about results, but it is still an exchange between individuals and it has a very human component. Thus, an important part of what makes a good manager is their ability to connect with others, to build rapport and trust.

Good managers know how to be authentic, open and friendly with other people, especially their subordinates. They demonstrate interest in others and they can make interpersonal interactions informal and relaxed. Thus, others find it highly enjoyable to work with them or for them.

4. Integrity

This is a part of building a connection and trust that’s so important I felt the need to describe it separately. Integrity is the alignment between thoughts, words and actions. A manager with a lot of integrity is the one who says what they think and does what they say they’ll do.

As a result, the subordinated employees know they can count on their manager and it’s easy for them to trust their manager. Team transparency, constructive attitudes and performance naturally arise from there. And if you’re wondering why such conditions are so rare in many organizations, it is because high integrity is also rare.

5. Motivational Skills

No, I’m not talking about doing Tony Robbins style speeches in front of the team, although they may have their place and their worth. I’m talking about the more subtle managerial ability to understand people’s motivations and properly respond to them.

A manager with this quality is able to match the motivations and strengths with the tasks and compensations for each one of their employees. Considering the uniqueness of each employee and the structural complexity an organization can have, this is quite the skill to master.

6. Decision Making Skills

I see a big part of the manager’s role as putting together a puzzle. The pieces of the puzzle are people, tasks, goals and data. Assembling them means creating strategies, distributing tasks, supervising their execution and providing feedback.

All of these managerial activities involve a lot of decision making, and it is first-rate decision making skills that lead to the best decisions. A good manager needs to think rationally, analyze variables effectively and strategize with skill. Otherwise, when the puzzle is finished, there will still be unused pieces.

Taking into account all the qualities described above, I’m sure you realize that what makes a good manager is serious stuff. Good management is no child’s play. For this reason more than anything else, I think it’s best for managers to never get too cocky about their skills and to continually invest in their self-growth.

All Credit Goes to Frank Wiles

SELinux is a set of extra security restrictions on top of the normal Linux security tools. It gives the systems administrator a finer grain of control than what the kernel typically provides.

But SELinux can sometimes get in your way. For example, I have had typical services, such as Apache, appear to start up correctly, but remain inaccessible from the outside world because I forgot to allow the apache user rights to open that port or maybe my distro forgot about it. Before you turn off SELinux make sure you know why you are turning it off and the security concerns you might be opening yourself up to.

Turning off SELinux temporarily

Disabling SELinux temporarily is the easiest way to determine if the problem you are experiencing is related to your SELinux settings. To turn it off, you will need to become the root users on your system and execute the following command:

echo 0 > /selinux/enforce

This temporarily turns off SELinux until it is either re-enabled or the system is rebooted. To turn it back on you simply execute this command:

echo 1 > /selinux/enforce

As you can see from these commands what you are doing is setting the file /selinux/enforce to either ’1′ or ’0′ to denote ‘true’ and ‘false’.

Configuring SELinux to log warnings instead of block

You can also configure SELinux to give you a warning message instead of actually prohibiting the action. This known as permissive mode. To change SELinux’s behavior to permissive mode you need to edit the configuration file. On Fedora and RHEL systems that file is located at /etc/selinux/config. You need to change the SELINUX option to permissive like so:

SELINUX=permissive

Note that these changes will not take effect until the system is rebooted, which is why the first section comes in handy on a system you either cannot or do not want to reboot right now.

Completely turning off SELinux

To completely disable SELinux instead of setting the configuration file to permissive mode you set it to disabled like:

SELINUX=disabled

You will need to reboot your system or temporarily set SELinux to non-enforcing mode to create the desired effect like the example above.

In this article, i will post about how to make a simple validation form using javascript on PHP or HTML pages. For simplicity purposes, i won’t including using any databases while working with this form. So, it will be just a simple form and a success notification to prove that we have passed validation challenge that was provided in the form.

The Form will be simply look like this: (See Live Demo HERE)

I’ve been using css to beautify my login form, you can find so many beautiful css sample in internet to use.

Now, let’s talk about validation for this form. Despite the database (which is not being used in this moment), i just want to validate that:

1. The username should be 5 digit numeric only.
2. The username and password should be filled before being processed.

I will break down into 3 parts. css, form page and result page as below:

login.css:

#login-box {
width:333px;
height: 352px;
padding: 58px 76px 0 76px;
color: #ebebeb;
font: 12px Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
background: url(../images/login-box-backg.png) no-repeat left top;
}

#login-box img {
border:none;
}

#login-box h5 {
padding:0;
margin:0;
color: #ebebeb;
font: bold 44px "Calibri", Arial;
}

#login-box-name {
float: left;
display:inline;
width:80px;
text-align: right;
padding: 14px 10px 0 0;
margin:0 0 7px 0;
}

#login-box-field {
float: left;
display:inline;
width:230px;
margin:0;
margin:0 0 7px 0;
}

.form-login {
width: 205px;
padding: 10px 4px 6px 3px;
border: 1px solid #a71000;
background-color:#fff;
font-size: 14px;
color: #000;
}

.login-box-options {
clear:both;
padding-left:87px;
font-size: 11px;
}

.login-box-options a {
color: #ebebeb;
font-size: 11px;
}

form.php

<html>

I’ve been curious for so many time regarding how to make a website with “Geocoding” availability, where we can geocode a database of addresses.

‘Geocoding’ is the process of converting an address into a set of latitude/longitude coordinates, making it possible to indicate addresses on a map. Though it is possible to geocode addresses on the fly using the Maps API
GClientGeocoder
JavaScript class, it is often preferable to pre-geocode addresses if possible to avoid repeated lookups for known addresses. This is common, for example, when creating a “store finder” to locate a company’s businesses geographically on a map. Note that this technique should not be used for geocoding databases with thousands of addresses, as this goes against the intended use of this service. [http://code.google.com/apis/maps/articles/phpsqlgeocode.html]

At last, I’ve managed to try it by my self and I want to share it here (I know I’m not the first person who did it ).

Let’s start! First of all, let’s make a database to work with (I’m using MySQL)

Note: I assume that you have worked with PHP/MySQL before, so you won’t get any trouble to create a new database, named it and populate the data in MySQL and also to do a simple PHP coding.

Creating the table

When you create the MySQL table, you want to pay particular attention to the
lat
and
lng
attributes. With the current zoom capabilities of Google Maps, you should only need 6 digits of precision after the decimal. To keep the storage space required for our table at a minimum, you can specify that the
lat
and
lng
attributes are floats of size (10,6). That will let the fields store 6 digits after the decimal, plus up to 4 digits before the decimal, e.g. -123.456789 degrees. Your table should also have an
id
attribute to serve as the primary key, and a
type
attribute to distinguish between restaurants and bars. [http://code.google.com/apis/maps/articles/phpsqlajax.html]

Note: I’ve used some location data from Google Map (http://maps.google.com/) just for fun. You can use your own latitude and longitude information for the places that you want it to be showed in the map.

The SQL statement to create the table as displayed below (you can either use SQL command or phpMyAdmin interface).

CREATE TABLE `places` (
`id` INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY ,
`name` VARCHAR( 60 ) NOT NULL ,
`address` VARCHAR( 80 ) NOT NULL ,
`lat` FLOAT( 10, 6 ) NOT NULL ,
`lng` FLOAT( 10, 6 ) NOT NULL ,
`type` VARCHAR( 30 ) NOT NULL,
`img` VARCHAR( 500 )
) ENGINE = MYISAM ;

Populating the table

I’ve inserted some sample data into the table as below:

INSERT INTO `places` (`name`, `address`, `lat`, `lng`, `type`,`img`) VALUES ('Mesjid Raya Baiturrahman', 'Pusat Kota Banda Aceh', '5.553617','95.31724', 'Building','http://aboutmasjid.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/011708-2354-masjidrayab2.jpg');

Creating the map

Once the XML is working in the browser, it’s time to move on to actually creating the map with JavaScript. If you have never created a Google Map, please try some of the basic examples in the documentation to make sure you understand the basics of creating a Google Map.

I’ve created a file (gmap.php) that will create a map from the XML file as below:

Today, one of my friend ask me how to get a list of unique values from a MySQL Column. I’ll try to explain it here.

First of all, I’ve created a dummy database in MySQL called “unique”, then I’ve created one table as example and named it table “test”.

The structure and data of table “test” as below (please note that for the understanding purpose, the data have been created with duplicate values and i believe no one will create a database without a primary key like this ):

EmployeeID

Name

Address

11

Adi

Medan

13

Jack

Banda Aceh

24

Penan

Kutacane

11

Adi

Medan

40

Jme

Kuala Lumpur

13

Jack

Banda Aceh

15

Adi

Medan

24

Penan

Kutacane

15

Adi

Medan

It’s so messy, rite? Now, the following steps will tell you how to get a list of unique values from a MySQL column or from several columns.

mysql> select * from test;

Sometimes, our server’s timezone is pointing to wrong timezone. How do we setup or change the timezone under Linux operating systems?

The system dates are displayed using a reference from a file in your /etc directory called localtime, if you change this your are almost done.

Generic procedure to change timezone

Change directory to /etc

# cd /etc

Create a symlink to file localtime:

# ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/EST localtime

OR some distro use /usr/share/zoneinfo/dirname/zonefile format (Red hat and friends)

# ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/EST localtime

OR if you want to set up it to WIT (Asia/Jakarta):

# ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Jakarta localtime

Please note that in above example you need to use directory structure i.e. if you want to set the timezone to Jakarta (Indonesia) which is located in the Asia directory you will then have to setup using as above.

Use date command to verify that your timezone is changed:

$ date

Output:

Tue Feb 22 09:55:37 WIT 2011

Use of environment variable

You can use TZ environment variable to display date and time according to your timezone:

$ export TZ=Asia/Jakarta
$ date

Sample Output:

Tue Feb 22 09:55:37 WIT 2011
