This is a repost of a strip we put out back on Valentine's Day 2013.

Don't try to read too far into it. There's no hidden meaning other than a father who doesn't do a very good job explaining to his kids why we celebrate this particular holiday.

We've done similar strips for SAINT PATRICK'S DAY as well as THANKSGIVING. This particular one, however, sprung straight out of Harold's creative cranium and it is simply one of my favorite strips.

I find this strip funny on a few levels. One is something only I will get, but I'll try to explain. Got a few hours?

No?

OK, I'll sum up.

I've been told, my entire adult life, 75% of the time I meet someone new, that I look just like a friend of theirs, or their neighbor.

Or someone I've known for a while will tell me they saw someone the other day who looked just like me.

I've come to find out that these people are just seeing fat guys with red hair, glasses, and a beard. They actually look nothing like me, but because we share those same 4 attributes, we are all the same person.

#87: THE BOOTS CONUNDRUM

I got the idea for this strip from a documentary I watched about the Old West.

It might have even been a Ken Burns documentary.

Anyway, there was this particular section that talked about how the National Standardization of Time came about due in part to the Sears & Roebuck catalog.

And, as I needed a couple of fellas to completely ignore the request of our hero, get into a discussion about something that had nothing at all to do with what our hero needed, and then delay our hero's journey because of it (because, as I've mentioned, this Western story line is a loose homage to a particular movie and that scenario happens at the beginning of said movie), the idea of this discussion between the two farmers made me giggle.

Also, if you don't recognize him, that's Reg playing the part of Farmer #2. Reg made his debut in Strip #15: Fear of the Unknown, and then returned in #23: Jumping the Shark, #24: Vaulting the Shark, and #63: Heist Anxiety Part Five.

I do a LOT of repeating panels. It's honestly not done out of laziness. I just think the humor timing lends itself to that style.

I try my best to make each panel somewhat different.

Harold makes an excellent point.

Repeating panels, especially in a humor strip such as are's, has nothing at all to do with laziness.

In many cases, the humor comes from the repeating panels.

I mean, isn't that what life is? I bet if you took a really long look at your life, really dissected it, you'd see that your life, just like ours, is full of repeating panels.

This strip makes me laugh.

Is that a bad thing? Laughing at a strip I wrote? I mean, I don't laugh when I read the script, but when I see it realized by Harold, I laugh.

There's just something about Lightning. He's so paranoid about being eaten, he's willing to sacrifice his own cousin to save himself.

Steeven's scripts are very easy to make funny. We have very similar senses of humor, so when I read his stuff, I almost instantly visualize how it'll look.

I love drawing facial expressions, and Steeven's scripts rely pretty heavily on being able to see how the characters are feeling.

Does a one-legged duck truly swim in a circle?

The first time I had to draw a horse for the strip I was super anxious about it. I have never focused on drawing animals. It was going to look awful.
Well, after giving it the old college try (where did that phrase come from anyway?), I actually was REALLY happy with the result.

Now I LOVE drawing horses, and get very excited every time Gene and/or Paul (that's their names) appear in a strip.

#81: STORY TIME

I've been looking forward to this strip for a long time.

Story Time represents the start of our Western story that will be broken up and told in bits and pieces throughout the strip.

Back when we first started doing Our Adventure Continues, the idea was that Harold and I were going to to a webcomic about two guys named Harold and Steeven, a writer and an artist, who do a webcomic. I mean, totally meta, right?

As part of this idea, we were going to have our characters create strips about all sorts of stuff, like a sprawling Western epic, in which the two guys play some of the parts, along with our supporting cast of characters such as Reg, Stan, Paul, and Gene (who are horses).

In the end we got a way from that. If you've been following along you'll know that Harold and Steeven stopped working on the comic and went their separate ways. This caused them to wind up in prison together.

Well, I'd had a number of strips written for this idea I'd had for a Western and I'm really excited that we found a way to fit them in. The Western is actually an homage to a movie that is not at all a Western. I invite you to guess which movie it is as you read along. I hope I haven't made it too obvious.

Anyway for the next few weeks, enjoy Harold as Marshall Beans Bronson.

#80: THE YOGURT INCIDENT PART TWO

So, apparently, Harold really doesn't like yogurt.

I don't know why.

It's wonderful stuff.

Just look at what Wikipedia has to say about it:

Yogurt is a food produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. The bacteria used to make yogurt are known as "yogurt cultures". Fermentation of lactose by these bacteria produces lactic acid, which acts on milk protein to give yogurt its texture and characteristic tart flavor. Cow's milk is commonly available worldwide, and, as such, is the milk most commonly used to make yogurt. Milk from water buffalo, goats, ewes, mares, camels, and yaks is also used to produce yogurt where available locally. Milk used may be homogenized or not (milk distributed in many parts of the world is homogenized); both types may be used, with substantially different results.

Yogurt is produced using a culture of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus bacteria. In addition, other lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are also sometimes added during or after culturing yogurt.

So, Harold doesn't like yogurt.

Not at all.

Me, I don't mind it so much.

As you can imagine, it's the one thing that we fight over constantly. To tell the truth, when we were on a break recently, it was due solely because I told Harold that yogurt was the aweseomest awesome stuff in all the awesome world.

We didn't talk to each other for two years.

In the end, I apologized and we reconciled.

Of course, none of that is true... except for how Harold feels about yogurt.

He really does hate the stuff.

I, one hundred percent, legitimately would rather sit next to a used litter box than an open yogurt container.

Since we are near the end of this adventure, let me tell you what's going to happen moving forward.

The final page of the Piñata will be posted next Friday, that's the 26th. Then we are going to take 4 weeks off to prepare for the the strip staring Harold and Steeven.

Then we will give you 12 straight weeks of Our Adventure Continues goodness before we take another 4 week break.

And that's how things should work moving forward. 12 weeks on, 4 weeks off.

In the meantime, on January 31, I'll be posting the first of my weekly prose series, The Mighty Piñata, to continue the Piñata fun. So that's something else to look forward to.

Beyond that, we'll be working on a little surprise during this upcoming 4 week break, but I'm not going to say more than that here. I'm just going to let that sit there without any further clarification until sometime later.
