You might remember way back when she was little I dressed her up in the same dress I once wore.

Well here we are again back at it for a little more fun. She and I went through my old dance costumes and she wanted to try on each and every one that would fit her. So I ablidged and let her have some fun!

I couldn't find the hat....but it's still pretty stinkin' funny to see!

They're a little dingy now, they're pretty wrinkled, and the elastic makes that cracking sound because they're pretty old...but I will say this- for all the years I've owned them they've held up pretty well. And If I am being honest- I think my daughter looks WAY cuter in them than I ever did.

I've been committed to getting organized. I feel like if my house is organized then life will be less stressful. To each their own. Anyway- I completed my daughters closet yesterday. Here is a before photo.

I took everything off the hangers and out of the drawers and made two piles- FITS and TOO SMALL
After I decided what didn't fit her anymore I put those items in a bin in the basement (which I will go through and decide to sell at a consignment sale in the spring).

I think I am in love with the way it cleaned up! I am planning to tackle the boys closets this week. The nice part of this is that I can see EXACTLY what they have and what they need for the coming season. She went through a huge growth spurt so pretty much none of her spring/summer clothes from last year will fit her this year....but I guess that's normal when you are 3 =)

I've been sewing again...check out this adorable dress I made for her out of scraps of fabric and a sewing pattern from the 80s!

Ohh and one more....here comes trouble!

A winter ONEderland

We had a fantastic 1st birthday party for our sweet lil duke! It was a GREAT party! We had so much fun and so many people came by to help celebrate our sweetheart's special day (2 days early).

We had Goldfish for our party guests

And some fun penguin cups

There were icicles hanging from the ceiling

We had a cute penguin inviting our guests to waddle on in

Mommy tried hard to make a cute sign (eh, it's ok)

There was a wall filled with lil dukes monthly growth photos

And some cute snowflake thank you gifts for our party friends

There were edible icicles

and PLENTY of snow treats

There was some penguin poop too! (it's not gross it's funny)

Some warm snowman soup

And some chilly arctic freeze

The krispie penguins were a huge hit

We even got to eat snowflakes

Some tuxedo penguins waddled in as well

There were penguins that decided to go ice fishing

And we tasted some dirty snowflakes

We had a special birthday boy thrown

And some very special glacier cakes

And once all the party food was eaten we decided it was time to sing to the special birthday boy!

I think all the singing worried him a little bit, but then he saw the cake and thought things might be ok

I think I might try a little bit of this

OK let's see....lil prince had kidney stones a few weeks ago, lil king had strep and a nasty reaction and now lil princess had croup! Break????? Where are you???? I'd sure like to catch one.

She woke me up around 11:30pm crying and gasping for air....certainly NOT a sound any mommy wants to hear. I knew exactly what was going on because she is my lil' croup kid...she always seems to get it. I immediately brought her into our bathroom, shut the door, turned the shower on as hot as it could go and waited for the steam to do its magic. 15 minutes later no such luck! So I called the nurse line to get some more tips. The nurse could hear her struggle over the phone and said to bring her in right away. I didn't think driving all the way to the Children's hospital in the ghetto sounded like a good idea, especially at midnight on a Friday night, so I too her to the closest pediatric urgent care. While there they hooked her up to the monitor and gave her a Racemic Epinepherine nebulizer. These are the magic nebs that should do the trick.....well it lasted about 1 1/2 hours. BOO! So a second one and a visit again from the doctor with the news we were going to have to be admitted came shortly after. Problem was....they wouldn't let me drive her to the hospital. So my lil princess got to go for a ride in an ambulance! She was kind of nervous because I wasn't going to be in there with her (I had to follow behind in my SUV. But once I got to the hospital she was all smiles. They gave her a teddy bear and everything! We didn't get to bed until after 5am and only slept for 2 hours...tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiired! She was discharged the next morning and she's been on steroids to help since. We'll stop those in a few days. UGH!

Update on 2012 projects

For those of you are faithful followers you will remember my List of 2012 Projects. I have been working on them!
Here is my before and after photos of my mud room. Now because I am being honest and sharing what my mud room REALLY looked like before you must bite your tongue with judgement...after all I do have 5 4 kids (+1 husband).


Oy what a MESS!

I don't know who to blame...them or myself!

Too much stuff without a REAL place

Want to know what I did? First I purged....I took every single thing out of the closet and off the bench and cubbies and tossed it on the floor! I made the mess bigger before it was made better.
Then I decided what was necessary to organize this chaos. Buckets!!!! I purchased 4 clear tubs with teal stripes (because it's one of my favorite colors) and made labels for them (one with each child's name on them). These are stored neatly under the bench for their shoes.

Next I added a long rectangle strip just above the coat hooks. I painted chalkboard paint onto the wall in the same teal color. For now it has one of my favorite quotes on it but as my children get older I plan to use it for a "reminder" board of tasks, appointments, and schedules.

I designated one closet for the kids items and one for the adults items to keep things seperated.

I used my favorite label maker to label the drawers. Each drawer is designated for one specific item (umbrellas, hats, mittens, scarves, and reusable bags).

The I designated two tubs for extra shoes. With 4 kids I have LOTS of extra shoes around this house and they always seem to be lost in a tub somewhere in my storage area. This way I have them sorted and together! Yippie!

Lastly I decided that each child needed their own "locker" so I labeled them with their names and used each one to hang their coat and shoes for the coming day. This saves me time as they know EXACTLY what to grab and where it is!

So there you have it....my new and improved mud room! Let me know what you think!

My poor dude! I feel so bad for him. This rash is certainly getting worse as the time is going on...pretty soon he's going to be all red.

If you are a faithful follower of our blog you will know it is never dull at our house. Well this week has proven that for sure!
See this sad rash?

This is what guttate psoriasis strep throat looks like. What the heck is that you ask? Well long story short it is a form of strep throat. Lil King is on antibiotics right now and the toxins from the strep are being released through his skin. It is really rare (only 2% of strep infections happen this way) and the rash will continue to get worse over the next week or two and can last up to two months! It's itchy, obnoxious and annoying. Poor guy!

This is what a baby who LOVES bath time looks like! Yup, lil' duke is such a fan of bath time! He loves it so much that he throws a fit when I have to take him out for fear he will start to resemble a raisin.

I have been on a cleaning, organizing, and new project finding kick this past month....who knows, maybe it's the desperate need to put the year 2011 behind me...shoot with 6 deaths among our friends and family, some serious illnesses, major surgeries, and other huge stresses I think I'd do about anything to "move on" to a new year. Pintrest is my newest favorite site and I wanted to share with you some AMAZING tips and tricks I have learned from it. (and if you are good at the very end I will share a cute video, lol)

1. Use empty cereal boxes for photo mats. I have tons of cereal boxes and lots of scraps of fabric
2. An empty ketchup bottle makes an awesome pancake batter dispenser
3. Did you know that if you spread mayo on a water stain and wipe it off the next day it will remove the stain?

4. The top of an old Parmesan tub fits perfectly on a mason jar!
5. You can make your own pore strips at home with only a makeup brush,1 tsp gelatin,1 tsp milk, and a dish
6. Peroxide and baking soda will clean your stained cookie sheets and make them look like new!

7. Did you know that a simple dryer sheet will clean a muffin pan to look like new?
8. Have you ever had a greasy stain on clothes? Rub chalk on it and leave over night- it absorbs the grease
9. Dingy dishwasher? All you need is Distilled white vinegar, Baking Soda,Microfiber cloths, Toothbrush

10. Attention crafty nerds (like me) a flat iron will de-wrinkle your craft ribbon

11. You can make your own ice packs with water and Dawn dish soap

12. There is an easy way to get use out of the left over wax from a candle

13. Use cupcake papers to cover your drink outside to keep bugs from landing in it.

14. Easy way to arrange flowers- tape a grid across the bowl or jar first

15. Hate when apples turn brown after cutting them? Use a rubber band.

16. Put an old nylon over your vacuum hose to help find itty bitty lost things without losing them forever.

17. There really IS a way to fold a fitted sheet!!!

18. Use a straw to hull out strawberries...PERFECTION!

19. If you put your cell phone in a bowl and play music on it- the bowl will amplify the sound!

20. You can re-use old wipe containers for plastic bag storage and dispensers

21. Use a tension rod under your sink to hang all your spray bottles!!!

22. This one is great! Secure a strip of Velcro to your kids wall and stick their stuffed animals to it!

23. Rub a walnut on a scratched, dinged and distressed piece of wood to cover it up...works!

24. Have a lot of tissue paper? HANG IT!!!

26. Buy ground beef in bulk? place it in a zip lock bag and divide and store- follow this link

27. Use pouring/storage containers for sugar and flour...no more spills!

28. Use a shoe holder rack to store cleaning products and save shelf space

29. Did you know most magazine racks will fit regular sized cans? Dispenser anyone?

30. Save your bread tags and use them to label all those cords on your power strips!

January

We welcomed the birth of our third son, our fourth child- Jacob, we learned that a full size bed isn't quite big enough for Zachary, and I shared my top 10 favorite things for each child.

February

We celebrated Jacob's due date, Jacob was hospitalized for RSV, and we figured out that Jacob's monthly photos wouldn't always be on the 31st.

March

Maddie finally is potty trained, Zach dug for buried treasure, Maddie shared who loves her, and she looked pretty cute all fresh and clean.

April

We had a little tie dye fun, made some pretty Easter eggs, went on a hunt, and Sam showed us what over stimulation looks like.

May

The twins turned THREE, we found a "friend" in our yard, Sam took some swings at t-ball, and we got a wonderful play set!

June

We had a huge summer party, we had some summer fun, played with mommy's camera, and went to a parade!

July

We said good-bye for now to my most amazing grandma, we grew our own veggies, we met the people behind 911, and Maddie was crowned a princess.

August

We took the kids bowling, we learned who Jacob loves, we had a fun picnic, went to the state fair, and drove tractors!

September

Sam had an eye doctor appointment, we had family portraits taken at our home, and I started a new project.

October

We went to a few orchards, we became a Star Wars family, we celebrated a Jedi's birthday, and we attended Fall Fest!

November

Mommy got her craft on, we went to Build a Bear, and we learned that Rumor Has It is a fan favorite!

December

We had a million Christmas parties, we traveled the great wide open, we wished you all a Merry Christmas!

It's that time of year again...time for family, cookies, Santa, memories and celebrations of what Christmas means. It's also that time of year where I make the kids all wear the same PJs and take their photo for the annual Christmas in our jammies photo. So here it is the ONE that looks not half bad.

The hardest part about this photo is NOT the four children, it's NOT getting them to look at me, or even to smile. The hardest part about this photo is getting daddy to stand behind me and make silly sounds and faces so they will look at me.
My how they've all changed. I also added the slide show of the past Christmas' photos so you can watch them through the years.

Yesterday morning my oldest yelled out to me "Mama, mama come quick there is an eagle on our beach!" I thought "hmmm, he's said this before and 99 times out of 100 its just an ugly black crow." Well he was right this time! It was an eagle! I told him to stay quiet and not tap on the window so I could run and grab my camera. I came back to FIVE eagles!!! Seriously the COOLEST thing I've ever seen!

Aren't they breath taking? In case you are wondering they are standing on the lake (frozen).
My princess and I were sick yesterday and pretty much stayed in bed all day. Daddy put the peanut down for a nap and took the older three downstairs to "work out." After a while I went down to see how she was feeling and found her fast asleep in the chair downstairs. (Which is saying a lot because the music was a'thumpin and the boys were being crazy loud!)

Last, and certainly not least....some cute videos of my lil peanut!

Origami, trail mix, and cuties!

The next few weeks are going to be crazy busy for us (and I assume most people). I wanted to share with you the cuteness known as my sweeties! The other day I caught the twins having a tea party with their Sit and Spin. I love the creativity they have! Flip it upside down, a few plates and cups and a server and viola- a tea party!

I meant, with all good intentions, to share this photo a while ago as well. Our oldest is quite creative when it comes to building things. He is really into a set a blocks I have that are pretty old (and worth quite a bit of money) as they are over 50 years old and in great shape! He built a train- complete with smoke stacks and wheels! He was quite proud! Check out that detail!

I'm still making fun lunches for the kids and they still seem to like it (and eat better too!) This past Friday I made them a Christmas themed lunch with only red and green food! They loved it!

I decided to start doing an Advent calendar with the kids this year as well. We celebrate Christmas and its true meaning...so I thought it would be great fun to wrap up 24 Christmas books for the kids and each night before bed they could pick one to unwrap and we would read it together as a family. They've really enjoyed doing this, so I know I will keep this as a tradition for years to come!

And last but not least the two latest Christmas projects I have been working on....the first is a Christmas/Santa trail mix I made for my wonderful friends at MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers- for church).

And one of my new favorite projects- an origami wreath! Isn't it beautiful?

Organization.....to the rescue

If I am being honest (and I am) I am kind of a type A, OCD, A.R. person (if you don't know those terms---GOOGLE is your friend). I am often asked how do I keep things straight, how do I survive, how to I keep a house of 6 people running....well- here is one of my self taught tips.

My obsession with organization has been quite a topic of conversation, especially when it comes to my handy dandy meal plan. I am going to dedicate this post to sharing my tips and tricks to creating a functional and year-long meal plan. Now don't get ~~freaked out, scared,~~ overwhelmed it really IS easy to do. It will just take a little bit of determination on your part....and the benefits are well worth it (less stressing about what to make for dinner, less impulse buying at the grocery store, more money in your pocket).

Step 1: Print 12-15 copies of a blank calendar (or use a store bought calendar). I found my favorite meal planning calendar HERE.

Step 2: Start with one month (or two if you are feeling really determined). Set aside time to plan the entire month out. You can fill in the days with family favorites and also some new meals you have found in books or on sites. These are a few of my favorite websites for recipes.

Step 3: As you fill in your days with meals, vegetables, and sides be sure (if you want to earn a golden star for organization) to print the recipes out and save them in a binder or folder.

Step 4: This last step is ~~big, huge,~~ really important, be sure to save your monthly meal plan for future use. Label it with the month (this is helpful if you tend to make "seasonal" meals like chili, apple crisp, soups, salads). Try your best to make everyday a different meal for the month and only repeat a meal after it has been a month (or if you are really brave try for two months).

Step 5: Last step, after the year has passed you will have a wonderful collection of new and old favorite recipes AND a years worth of meal plans. Then simply start fresh....when January rolls around again simply grab last years January plan and go for it! (One little added bonus----if you wanna show off your organization go to the office supply store and buy a dry erase board and hang it in your kitchen with that month's meals on it. Erase them as the day passes. Whenever someone comes over to your house they will see it and think you have it all together! (wink, wink)

Ohhh, one more thing....my pantry is my BFF....I love to ~~hoard~~ store sweet grocery deals there.

10 months, a fever and some milestones

I am writing this late tonight because the lil' 10 month old guy is sick. He has been fighting a nasty cold for a few weeks now...he's been to the doctor a handful of times and all we've come out with is an ear infection and some antibiotics. Grrrr. Tonight he spiked a fever of 104.4 and my poor baby boy seems so miserable. If you know him you know he is the most easy going, laid back guy so for him to be crabby is RARE!
I was able to sneak in a few of his 10 month photos though.

He has a total of 8 teeth, he learned to wave hi and bye this past week, he has begun clapping and he's been making more sounds. He loves to crawl (backwards) and roll all over the place. Even though he's sick, I think he makes one cute 10 month old boy! I also added a fun photo of lil' king doing a science project with me...stay tuned to find out what we did.

The Crafting Bug- I think I might be sick- part 3

I also made some paperback Christmas trees. I saw this idea on Pintrest (a new FAVORITE of mine) but I added my own style to make it...more me.
What you need is:
a paper back book
glitter spray
rick rack
pipe cleaners
a dab of hot glue

Rip the cover off of the front and back of the book

Begin by folding the page into a triangle- towards the binding

Step two- repeat with the same page- fold again towards the binding

Third fold is the little tab left over at the bottom- fold up-

You will need to repeat this for about 125-150 pages (using a clip to hold the folded pages out of the way is a huge help!)

When you finish folding your pages then tear off the remaining pages and snip the left over binding off too
Use a small dab of hot glue to glue the first and last pages together, spray with glitter paint

Decorate with glittery rick rack

or you can use glittery pipe cleaners rolled into rosettes

I also made a sweater bowl out of an old sweater and a plastic bowl

Snip the sweater and hot glue to the bowl

I think these two projects look great together...don't you?

The Crafting bug- I think I might be sick- part 2

This is one of my all time favorite projects I have done with my kids. It just so happens to be an all time favorite Christmas present too! It's really easy and turns out just adorably!

Here is what you will need:
1 piece of white paper (large) (or a canvas-which is what I used- you can get them for pretty cheap)
Green, yellow and brown paint
1 kid willing to get ooey and gooey

Paint your child's hand with the green paint- make one row of 4 hand prints

Next paint your child's hand again and make a row of 3 hand prints

Then make a row of 2 hand prints on top of that

Lastly, 1 hand print on the very top

Use the brown paint to make a stump and the yellow to make a star on the top. (Have your child autograph the tree with the year to mark the date)

These make GREAT presents and they are always adored by grandparents. While making the tree I thought to myself....hmmm, what if I traced a circle really lightly in pencil and did the same thing?

Ta-da! A pretty and festive wreath...I think I am going to add a real red bow on the top to complete it and wrap it up as a gift. Hope you enjoy and have fun making one too!
P.S. one great tip I learned- we got a little paint on the canvas where we didn't really want it...I waited until it dried and it washed right off with a damp towel (we used- Crayola's washable finger paints)

the crafting bug- I think I might be sick- part 1

I've got the crafting bug bad this year. I don't know why. I think it is a combination of a few things---trying to keep my mind occupied (from thinking about my loss of my grandma), making up for last year, or a new home to decorate? Either way- my house is reaping the rewards of my itch to craft. I going to separate my crafting endevors into three posts because I am linking them up to some fun linky parties and I can't link multiple items for one post. So bear with me...
First and foremost-

My lovely Candy Cane Vase- it's a great looking vase- albeit bare...I could use some tea roses to fill it up (hint, hint)

Here is what you will need:
a glass vase (either square, rectangle or circle- a vase with a neck doesn't really work for this)
some holiday ribbon
candy canes
low-temp glue gun

Gage how much space the candy canes will take up and use the remaining amount to fill in with ribbon. I used ribbon around the base of the vase.

We kept our candy canes wrapped to avoid sticky fingers (and sneaky licks). Using a low temp glue gun apply a ribbon of glue to the candy cane (not the vase- it will harden before you have a chance to apply the candy cane).

Once you have covered the vase with the desired candy canes attach a bow around the middle for a little added appeal. (The best part about this project is- if you keep them wrapped at the end of the season you can simply pull them off the vase and eat them- your vase will not be ruined and the canes will be fresh because they were wrapped, AND you don't have to worry about storing the vase over the year and the possibility of them breaking.)
