In the period between finishing recording and finishing editing, developments have happened. Now when you attempt to upload to Mevio, instead of simply saying the account has been suspended you are told that following a review, podcasts were found that fall outside the Mevio terms of service. Instead of dealing with the podcasts involved they suspended lots of accounts and are asking people to re-submit. This screenshot is from somebody else, but I got exactly the same message. I will almost certainly be having an extended rant about this next week.

Here is the post from TechCrunch that is closest to explaining what happened to Mevio. Other than the corporate-speak above that you only see if you're an affected podcaster, we still have no official word from Mevio. Here is a link to the press release that is referenced in the article and on my show. (The link used in the TechCruch post has been removed.) I'd be interested to know how many of the hits that got Mevio it's 'Top 15 Ranking' were for the audio podcasts it has unceremoniously dumped.

Only two videos this week, but both of them are pretty cool. The Haiku provide us with a video that unfortunately will be all too familiar to our short attention span world and Symphony of Science does his usual thing of viral video making featuring the 'lead vocals' of the awesome Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

I am furious at the moment.

Without any warning the site where I host my podcasting files, mevio.com, has suspended my account and I am not the only one. It seems that my fellow music podcasters Erk, Pete Cogle and Rowley Cutler have also had their accounts suspended as well as many, many other users who I don't personally know. It appears that accounts who don't have advertising deals with Mevio had their accounts suspended on Friday without warning or explanation. E-mails to Mevio customer service have gone ignored. I've never been a big supporter or fan of Mevio, but used them simply because it was the simplest way to get free hosting. They've now lost me as a user and I shall be using archive.org to host my files from now on.

For once a pretty decent selection of videos this week. The one by Burning Shapes is particularly good.

A very late first episode of 2012, for which I apologize. Sometimes you have the best intentions and things still get delayed.

It's fair to say I'm conflicted about the character of Moriarty.
This has absolutely nothing to do with the portrayal that Andrew Scott provides in this latest TV adaptation. As I mentioned in the show, his interpretation is one of the best I've seen. If you view him as The Joker then it works brilliantly.
My issue stems from the character himself. He has come down through history as one of the best arch villains in literature, if not the original arch villain, yet he only ever appeared in one short story. When Doyle got tired of his creation he needed a believable mechanism for Holmes' death and a character like Moriarty who was equal but opposite was the best way to do it.
In every adaptation of Holmes since we have always had Moriarty. I believe it's part of the superhero archetype where every hero needs a nemesis. In my eyes the character of Moriarty is given far too much importance and credence in the Holmesian universe. It diminishes the ingenious nature of Holmes' deductive method if in the background you've always got a moustache-twirling villain.

I'm going to stick my neck out now and make some predictions for series 3 of Sherlock.

1) Dr Watson will by the end of the series be married, although it's quite possible that he'll be married before the start of the third series. His wife will possibly be named Mary Morstan (Although I personally wouldn't like this as it means they're unlikely to do The Sign of Four). As an outside bet he'll be in a relationship with Molly.

2) The first story that gets adapted in series three will be The Empty House, which is the first story that Holmes returned in. It will feature Colonel Sebastian Moran, who will be a military sniper. It's quite possible that the assasin we saw at the end of this series will be revealed to be Moran.

3) Assuming Dr Watson isn't already married to Mary Morstan before the series starts, one of the stories that gets adapted will be The Sign of Four. It will be interesting to see how the story of Indian colonialism gets changed.

Only one poor-quality live video and one uninspired produced video this week.

Ourobouros Podcast Best Videos of 2011 Shownotes

Once again I bring you my choices for the ten best videos that were played on the Ourobouros Podcast in 2011. A nice mix of cheap, inventive videos and beautifully shot higher budget videos.

Despite the fact there are three videos from LA in this years list, there's still a wide variety of locations around the world that these videos come from.

These videos are not in any 1-10 order, they were played in the order that they featured on the Ourobouros Podcast.

Here's some brief reasons why I selected these videos as my best of the year

'Rabbits In A Hurry' by Superpitcher

I love the way this video creates an atmosphere of loneliness and also it's simplicity. I also admire the skill it takes to make Paris seem completely abandoned.

'You're So Pony' by Beth Thornley

This is just a fun video with a quirky idea. You've got to love a video that just breaks down into a choreographed dance sequence too.

'Polar Rapid' by 1995

From: Auckland, New Zealand

My favourite type of music video is one that didn't cost a lot of money, but still has a brilliantly simple concept. This is one of the best examples of that philosophy I've ever seen. I love the way you have to imagine what each person is seeing and even wonder if they're all watching the same thing.

'Automatic' by Everything Is Made In China

A dreamy video with a simple concept and an unusual visual style. Using a bed as a metaphor for a relationship without resorting to sex is a wonderful idea and makes you contemplate the spaces we live in and how we use them.

'The Space In Between' by How To Destroy Angels

Probably the biggest budgeted video I've ever highlighted in one of these review shows. That's what you get when Trent Reznor is in the band. A dark, disturbing video that drowns you in uncomfortable images.

'Can We Go Wrong' by Hesta Prynn

Who doesn't love a human stop-motion video? I certainly love them and this is a really fun example. It also finds time to reference Simon and Missile Command in a hyperactive, colourful experience.

'Damn That River' by The Evidence

From: Calgary, Canada
Director: Douglas Thomson
Appears On: Episode #183

A beautifully shot video with a simple concept. The juxtaposition of a modern, punky band dressing clean cut and emulating the '50s reminds me somewhat of the video to 'In Bloom' by Nirvana. This juxtaposition is also highlighted by the fact the '50s Housewife' clearly has a large tattoo on her shoulder.

'Fever Dreaming' by No Age

From: Los Angeles, California
Director: Patrick Daughters
Appears On: Episode #184

A brilliantly simple, if strange, idea that blows your mind one you get the concept. I really admire the technical achievement of this video.

'The Difference' by Snovonne

From: Hannover, Germany

There are videos that perfectly fit the track they're made for, and this is a really good example. The track is a fractured, operatic epic and the artist herself directs a fractured, operatic video.

'The Night' by Principe Valiente

From: Stockholm, Sweden

I'm still not 100% sure about the message of this video, but it's one of the most gorgeously shot independent music videos I've ever seen.

As ever it was very difficult to whittle the list down to a final 10. I also followed my rule that bands who are not together anymore were excluded. Honourable mentions go to:

Getting the Raw Footage Podcast live and online delayed this episode a little, for which I apologise. Once I get everything organised it shouldn't happen again. You can find the homepage at www.raw-footage.co.uk with subscription links using iTunes and FeedBurner.

Tim Tebow has become one of the most discussed players in the NFL. One slightly odd manifestation of this is the internet meme of 'Tebowing'. The album art for this episode shows Tebow in his typical prayerful pose when he is waiting for a Field Goal or similar situation. People have taken to copying this pose in strange places. If you search online you can see people 'Tebowing' in places such as the leaning tower of Pisa, the Abbey Road zebra crossing and an Iraqi military camp. Sometimes I despair of the human race.

This is the last podcast in this feed for 2011. The show will return in the first week on January with the traditional review shows, counting down my top 10 favourite tracks and videos that were played during the year.

The more I think about the film Hugo, the more I think Martin Scorsese might deserve some recognition as Best Director. He managed to really use the 3D aspect of his film and made it something visually arresting. My point still stands that if it wasn't Scorsese directing, this family orientated film would not be getting so much Oscar buzz.

It was enormous fun going to London last weekend. Despite the travel issues getting up there and missing the first film screening I was intending on seeing it was definitely worth going up a day early to have the Q & A session with Simon Curtis following the screening of My Week With Marilyn.

The audio I recorded of Lee's discussion about Joss Whedon, Quentin Tarantino & George Lucas is only a fraction of what went on at the Black Dog Christmas shindig. If you look at the album art Lee is in the middle of the group with me just behind him holding a beer. Martin is second left and Dangerous Mike J is second right in the hat. Unfortunately the other two participants in the conversation, Andy and Brooke, aren't in the photo because they were taking the photos. This one was by Andy.

It's somewhat ironic that the week after I announce I'm no longer doing Weekly Music Video Podcast I have an episode with three outstanding videos. I'm back from my trip to London and my internet connection seems to have stabilised for the moment, so it's time to write this weeks shownotes.

For those of you who care about the American Football discussed on the show, unfortunately only the Ravens - 49ers game was any good. The other two games were a bit of a let down. The last game was very good though, so I don't regret staying up until 5am before having to travel to London.

While in London I did watch the Nicolas Cage film Justice that I discussed in the show. I now understand why the film company didn't have much faith in the film. It's not very good.

Only one video this week, but it's pretty decent.

One thing that occurred to me whilst I was watching Sucker Punch again is, would it have been better if it had been written by a woman? Apart from the problems I mentioned with the writing in the podcast, I also think that the fantasy sequences are very male. I struggle to believe that a teenage girl would fantasize about giant samurai, steam-punk Nazi zombies and orcs. A different, female writer might have come up with more feminine fantasy fight sequences and might have had better luck melding the three layers of reality.

Not a bad selection of videos this week.
