Ourobouros Podcast Best Videos 2012

I give you my selection of the ten best videos for tracks that were played on the Ourobouros Podcast in 2012. It's an important distinction to say that it's for tracks that were played on the podcast, because one of these videos has only just been released now in 2013 and that's why this show is so delayed.

These videos are not in any 1-10 order, they were played in the order that they featured on the Ourobouros Podcast.

Here's some brief reasons why I selected these videos as my best of the year

'Silence Amplified' by Burning Shapes

From: Sevenoaks, England
Directors: Steve Piper & Toby Uffindell-Phillips
Appears On: Episode #209

The band says this track is about one mans inability to communicate with his girlfriend and the problems this causes. The video has a very clever visual metaphor for this situation and shows once again that simplicity is often best for a music video.

'Slip' by Fleming
From: New York City, New York
Director: Oliver Irving
Appears On: Episode #217

Ultimately I'm not sure what this video is trying to say, but one man's attempt to get to a party descending into a Kafkaesque nighmare is interesting from both a visual and storytelling perspective.

'In Your Arms' by Principe Valiente

From: Stockholm, Sweden
Director: Henning Cronheim
Appears On: Episode #218

For the first time we have a returning combination of artist and director from a previous review show. Last year I selected Principe Valiente's video The Night as one of my favourites. This video has a similar tone and is beautifully shot.

'Jealous Lover' by Ashland HIGH

From: Los Angeles, California
Director: Daniel Park
Appears On: Episode #219

Oddly this is almost a found-footage music video. It's great how simple videos that you might find on any 20-somethings phone tell a story of jealousy and regret. It's also interesting that Trace Cyrus, AKA Ashland HIGH, is willing to portray himself as a complete dick.

'Curvature' by the happy problem

From: New York City, New York

This is the video I delayed releasing this show to see, since I partially funded it through Kickstarter. I'm really glad I did. A gluttonous Hollywood party is used as a visual metaphor for the voracious appetites and 'me first' attitude of the modern entertainment industry. It gets a little dark too, which is always good for me.

'Chase The Sun' by Skipping Girl Vinegar

From: Melbourne, Australia
Directors: Mark Lang & Chris Lansell
Appears On: Episode #220

One of the keys things I look for in videos is cleverness and simplicity, and this video fits on both counts. Co-directed by the bands singer, this video sends a stuffed toy monkey into space attached to a balloon playing the track. Ingenious, sweet and fits the song perfectly.

'14' by Carrousel

From: Tallahassee, Florida
Director: Steven Letizia
Appears On: Episode #221

Possibly the most technically impressive independent video I've ever come across. It reminds me a lot of the Michel Gondry directed video for 'Sugar Water' by Cibo Matto, which is my all time favourite. Managing to sync up both sides of the screen so they work together is amazing and I recommend checking out the two 'Behind-The-Scenes' videos to see how they did it.

'Grrr' by Andy Palmer

From: Denver, Colorado
Director: Christian G. Marra
Appears On: Episode #224

There always seems to be at least one animated video in these reviews and here is this year's. The combination of rotoscoping, hand-drawn animation and flash works brilliantly well and tells the story of the song in a completely unique way.

'Throw Me A Line' by IAMEVE

From: Los Angeles, California
Director: Ryan McCoy
Appears On: Episode #228

This is a video that truly makes a visual statement and fits into the concept album that this track comes from. If weird yet beautiful imagery is your thing you can't go wrong with this one.

'What Are You Waiting For?' by Dikta

From: Garðabær, Iceland
Director: Helgi Jóhannsson
Appears On: Episode #234

If I was handing out awards for Best Director like I do over at Raw Footage then Helgi Jóhannsson would win it hands down. The song is awesome too, and would have made my top 10 tracks of the year if it wasn't being played here. A shocking tale of excessive rivalry is played out against the volcanic landscape of Iceland and it's beautifully tragic.

As ever it was very difficult to whittle the list down to a final 10. Honourable mentions go to:
