There was a lot of news this week! There were three really big announcements at Oracle OpenWorld that relate to the MySQL community:

Oracle released a NoSQL database. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/nosqldb/overview/index.html
It’s an ACID-compliant key-value data store, with a Java API for put, delete and get operations and includes replication. The data partitioning and distribution is automatic and based on a hash function.

This week we interview Doron Levari, CEO and co-founder of ScaleBase. ScaleBase transparently scales your database, so you can have many shards without having to code sharding in your application. We grabbed Calvin at OSCon Data, where Oracle announced the new features of MySQL 5.6 released on labs.mysql.com. Remember that the labs releases are for testing only and not supported in production use.

In the backup glossary we asked if anyone knew how to get logical data out of physical InnoDB files. Mike Hamrick of Blue Gecko wrote in to say that Percona's InnoDB recovery tool helps to do just that. He writes:

"As of today, there is a new mysqlbackup.exe that replaces the perl script innobackup and the myisamhotcopy from InnoDB Hot Backup. This is needed so we can do proper streaming and other media manager integration. Perl doesn't lend itself to that and is a problem on Windows in general as well. I had a setting wrong in my recording program and ended up having a very different sound quality than what I had wanted. I played with it as much as I could, but I apologize for the bad quality audio, especially the breathing that you can hear, the mouse clicks, and when you can hear me swallow and such. (It’s probably not as bad as it sounds, but I shudder at it all, because I want to provide y’all with the best quality possible).
