Renting a scooter is a popular way to explore the island, but remember to drink responsibly and never drink and drive. If you’re interested in learning how to surf, Phuket has friendly waves for beginners. You can also visit Monkey Hill for stunning views and encounter some wild monkeys. Don’t forget to explore the history of Phuket Town as well.

Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi Islands are another popular destination in the Andaman Sea, and Phi Phi Don is the largest and most famous island. You can find stunning beaches and resorts here, but away from the bustling Tonsai Beach area, you’ll discover quieter beaches. Phi Phi Islands are considered the base for exploring many other islands in the Andaman Sea, including Ko Phi Phi Le and James Bond Island. You can take private boat or speedboat tours around Maya Bay and snorkel in the areas near Big Phi Phi Island or Monkey Beach.

Krabi

Krabi is a province located on the mainland and offers a more relaxed atmosphere than Phuket. It is known for its rock climbing activities, which you can do at Railay Beach or around the area. There are also caves for kayaking, such as the ones you can explore in Ao Thalane. The only way to reach Railay or Ton Sai Beach is by long-tail boat, as there are no roads that can take you there. These caves have cliff formations called “cliff stalactites” and are truly a cool sight to see. Krabi has become more crowded over the years, so it’s worth considering spending three or four days here before heading to Phuket or returning to Ko Samui.

Places in North of Thailand

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a city known for its temples and beautiful high-altitude climate. Despite its cooler weather compared to Bangkok or Phuket, Chiang Mai doesn’t experience snow or anything similar. It is an ancient walled city with a lot of history dating back to the ancient Kingdom of Lanna. In addition to the beautiful temples surrounding the area, there is also a botanical garden and an elephant sanctuary where you can visit and feed elephants. Elephants and other types of performances are present here where you can see them. People do adventurous things in Chiang Mai and the surrounding areas. I recommend spending three to five days here. There isn’t much nightlife here, making it more of a daytime adventure experience. You can also visit the Long Neck Village and the night markets, which are some of the best markets you can find anywhere in Southeast Asia. I really enjoy strolling through the night markets and trying various types of food.

Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is a province neighboring Myanmar and Laos. It is known for its relaxed atmosphere and is an ideal destination if you’re looking for a super relaxing experience. Near Chiang Rai, you can find the Golden Triangle, which is the border area between Laos and Myanmar, meeting the Thailand border along the Mekong River. This region is very primitive and offers a sense of relaxation and beauty in nature. There are also the Blue and White Temples, as well as several art exhibits where you can see the White Temple, which is actually glittering in the sunlight. Its structure is very impressive. However, they don’t have a very party-centric atmosphere here, so if you’re one of those looking for nightlife, you won’t find it here. But it does have the nature and relaxation you might be looking for to rejuvenate yourself. You might be thinking about exploring Laos next, and I’ve mentioned that there are other islands around Ko Samui. One of them is Koh Phangan, which is actually known as the Full Moon Party Island. So if you’re someone who looks forward to a big party only once a month, they have big full moon parties here. The island will have beachfront resorts, bungalows, and more. It’s more relaxing compared to Ko Samui. However, you won’t get to experience that unless you see a lot of parties happening during the full moon party period. During that time, people come from Ko Samui, Ko Tao, and other surrounding areas just for that experience. Ko Phangan doesn’t have an airport, so your primary airport will be Samui Airport. You’ll take a long-distance bus from there, so keep in mind that you’ll have to take a ferry, which will take about an hour. Hopefully, the sea won’t be too rough as they can encounter some rough seas and you’ll be like, “Wow, what happened?”

Koh Tao

In the nearby region, there is another island that is famous among backpackers and divers, and it’s called Ko Tao. Ko Tao will have truly colorful blue waters and rocky beaches. From an aerial perspective, it’s really a small island, but it’s still a very popular place. It’s a bit far from Ko Phangan, and it doesn’t have an airport, so it’s a bit challenging to go here. Bangkok

Bangkok is the largest city in Thailand and one of the most visited cities in the world, second only to London. When in Bangkok, you can stay on Khao San Road or find a hotel along Sukhumvit. Khao San Road is more suited for backpackers, while Sukhumvit is more suitable for those looking for a luxurious experience without spending too much. You can also visit Chinatown, try street food, and explore shopping centers when taking the light rail along Sukhumvit Road. There are also several floating markets around Bangkok, and there are many temples along the Chao Phraya River. Ayutthaya is a region in the surrounding area where the city is a similar ancient city to Angkor Wat, but not at that level. People who like to explore old Siamese history enjoy it here. We actually return to the two Phi Phi Islands in the Andaman Sea. Now you can find a hotel here, and I would recommend one of the Bungalow Resorts where you can find a cottage on the beach and get away from the hustle and bustle of the Tonsai Beach area. Peepee Island is about an hour and a half to two hours from Phuket and about an hour and a half from Krabi, so it’s actually convenient to stay here, as I mentioned. While the beaches are a must-visit, you can see that they do have a bustling city port. It’s called Tonsai, and it’s growing in popularity, especially among backpackers and those who want to go to Maya Bay or the surrounding islands. I would say it’s worth staying here for three or four days if you’re going to ride a speedboat or ferry. But it’s really tough to stay for three days in Tonsai, and four days are perfect, and then you head to Krabi or return to Phuket. Regardless of where you’re from, try joining a full-day tour, where you can take a private boat or speedboat tour around Maya Bay. It’s actually closed now for swimming at Maya Bay, and they no longer allow boats to enter there, so you have to go behind. But in that trip, you’ll snorkel around Big Phi Phi Island or Monkey Beach.

Pattaya City

Pattaya City is located between Bangkok, Phuket, and Ko Samui. It is one of the three party zones. But Pattaya City is also becoming a destination for island hopping, just like some of the nearby islands. It’s also interesting because you can do some activities during the day and then hit the streets and attend some serious parties until nighttime. I strongly advise you to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated if you plan to do so. You can also visit the Truth Sanctuary and see more elephant sanctuaries, take care of them, and look into some speedboat activities to other islands, such as Koh Larn. I recommend traveling to Koh Larn from there for four to six days and indulging in the local cuisine. This is basically what you need here.

Island Hopping

Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is known for its Full Moon Party, which happens once a month and attracts thousands of party-goers. The island also has many beachfront resorts and bungalows. This island offers a more relaxed atmosphere compared to Koh Samui. It’s worth spending at least three to four days here to truly experience the island’s beauty. But during the Full Moon Party period, it can get very crowded, and it’s not easy to have a perfectly enjoyable four days. Then you head to Koh Tao or go back to Koh Samui.

Koh Tao

Koh Tao, also known as Turtle Island, is famous among backpackers and divers for its stunning coral reefs and marine life. The island offers crystal clear blue waters and rocky beaches, making it a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers. If you’re looking to learn or try Muay Thai boxing, they do have some courses or experiences where you can truly get into the boxing ring and try your hands in Muay Thai. However, I won’t irk the local Thais when it comes to Muay Thai, as they will definitely beat you up on the boxing ring.

Outdoor Adventures

Exploring rainforests in Ko Samui

Ko Samui offers more than just beaches. You can explore the tropical rainforests in the area, as there is a national park on the island. It’s a great activity for adventurers to explore the flora and fauna of the region. The best way to reach Ko Samui is by airplane from Bangkok, but they also have a ferry system, and you can take a ferry from Surat Thani and reach other islands.

Climbing in Krabi

Krabi is known for its rock climbing activities. You can head to Railay Beach or the surrounding area to challenge yourself on the rock formations. The area is famous for its limestone cliffs, which climbers referred to as “cliff stalactites.” It’s a truly cool place for climbers to enjoy their adventure.

Kayaking in Phuket

Phuket offers a range of kayaking experiences. You can navigate through caves and explore the hidden spots around Phuket. One popular spot is Ao Thalane, where you can paddle through beautiful mangrove forests and limestone karsts.
