If there was ever any doubt in your mind that hunters and sportsmen are second-class citizens, then you can stop worrying. Those of us that love the outdoors; devote our time, energy and hard-earned dollars to wildlife and conservation; and hold on to the Second Amendment and our American outdoor traditions like sacred mantras...are now officially and irrefutably second-class citizens.

Outdoor Resolutions

‘Tis the season for resolutions. We’re going to start working out. We’re going to quit smoking, lose weight, eat more vegetables or otherwise reform ourselves to the ‘better.’

But let’s be honest. New Year resolutions are usually great goals but the key to success in actually keeping your resolutions is to be realistic. Instead of trying to dramatically alter your life, experts recommend setting more modest goals.

The same is true for the outdoors. If we have goals to preserve our hunting heritage, we must have realistic goals, and that means getting back to basics.

In 1800, about five percent of the U.S. population lived in cities. We were largely an agricultural society, and we worked and thrived on the land and its abundant resources.

But by 1920, 50 percent of our population lived in cities and then President Theodore Roosevelt voiced concern over urbanization and he warned against the dangers urbanization posed to our society. He predicted that without wilderness and wild game upon which men could hunt, to which men from urban areas could retreat, the nation would lose “masculine values” and, perhaps, our democracy.
