Sparring is something that all martial arts use. There are numerous sports, such as boxing and wrestling that use sparring as well. During sparring, students go back and forth, competing with each other and testing each other. The rounds will vary, although most last several minutes. This also gives instructors the chance to see just how well you are progressing in training and what areas you need to work more on.

Sometimes, sparring is done by yourself, without anyone else working with you. If you are sparring by yourself, you'll use equipment such as punching bags, tackling dummies, or other forms of equipment that will help you with your martial art. The foam or rubber dummies are most often used with grappling techniques or punching on the ground, as they represent the opponent that you are trying to pummel into submission.

All in all, sparring is an excellent way to practice the skills you have learned against equipment or other students. Students are fun to spar against, especially if they are at a higher level of skill than you are. You can use sparring to your advantage, learning what others do and how they react to your movements and techniques. The longer you spar and practice your moves - the better you will get in your training, speed, and the execution of your skills.

Great Cyclists Of The Tour De France, Louison Bobet

Louison (or "Louis") Bobet was one of the great post-war French cyclists. In his career, he was able to win three Tour de France races (one of only eight riders to do so) and had four podium finishes in total. He was also known as a talented climber and tenacious, if sometimes stubborn, competitor.

In 1925, Bobet was born in Brittany, a part of northwestern France, and would compete in his first Tour de France in 1947, at the age of 22. The race did not go so well and certainly didn't foreshadow Tour de France greatness, as Bobet failed to finish.

However, the following year, Bobet won two stages, was the race leader for a time, and finished fourth in the 1948 Tour de France. It was in that year's race that Bobet famously rejected the chance to wear the yellow jersey, because he preferred all wool jerseys and the yellow jersey contained some synthetic materials. Race organizers had to have a wool version made up so that Bobet could wear it in the next stage.

In the 1950 Tour de France, Bobet would capitalize on his success by finishing third and winning the polka dot jersey as the race's best climber. He also garnered another stage win for himself that year. Bobet didn't make waves again in the Tour de France until 1953, but in that year's edition he really put on a show.

During the 1953 Tour de France, Bobet celebrated the Tour's 50th anniversary in his own way- by winning the overall race for the first time in his career. He won two stages during that year's race, including a five-minute victory over the field in a tough climb up the Izoard mountain that was celebrated as the race's greatest moment. He would ultimately finish almost fifteen minutes ahead of the next rider at the end of the race.

In the next years, Bobet would only continue his impressive performances. In 1954, Bobet won a career-high three stages in a race known for being the first Tour de France not to start in France at all. Bobet would then win his third consecutive Tour de France in 1955, winning two stages and winning by his slimmest margin, that being 4 minutes and 53 seconds over Belgium's Jean Brankart.

Unfortunately, Bobet would not reach that high level again. He raced his final Tour de France in 1958, finishing a modest 7th overall without garnering any stage wins. Then, two years later, a car accident near Paris basically ended Bobet's promising career.

Aside from the famous yellow jersey incident, Bobet was known for having the mannerisms and demeanor of a Hollywood star, and carrying himself in a rather elegant way that was different from the behavior of many cyclists during that era. He also had a reputation for being somewhat moody, especially early in his career, where he took his defeats very hard and would sometimes cry in disappointment after a race.

Regardless of his reputation away from racing, Bobet proved himself to be one of the legends of French cycling. His three consecutive wins put him in an exclusive class, and one can only wonder what he could have accomplished if he had remained healthy. Despite the abrupt ending of his career, Bobet is one of the greatest riders in Tour de France history.

Mixed martial arts is growing in popularity ever since rules were implemented for the safety of those in the ring and you can now watch it on television. It captures an audience both young and old since what happens either in the cage or ring is not scripted unlike wrestling.

There are two main styles of MMA. These are sport and street. In sport, two unarmed competitors fight it out using the same or different martial art discipline. Here, you can't bite, insert fingers to any bodily crevices, attack the groin and eye gouging. In street, you are allowed to use a weapon of your choice but the first is more popular that the other.

Just to prove how popular mixed martial arts is, various organizations have been formed since the Ultimate Fighting Championships was established in 1993. There is PRIDE, International Fighting Championships and Elite XC.

Basketball And Its Rules

Basketball was invented in a pursuit for an indoor game, which would provide complete fitness. Dr James Naismith, a Canadian physical instructor, wrote down the basic rule for the game after initial rejection of many ideas, at a YMCA Training School. This game was officially played for the first time on January 20, 1892, in the YMCA Gymnasium, at Springfield College. Women began playing basketball in 1892, at Smith College, and different sets of rules were laid down for them.

This is a team sport where two teams, consisting of nine members each, throw ball into a ten-foot high basket of the opponent in order to get a score. While one team member aims for the basket, member of the other team prevents him from doing so. The team that has the highest score wins the game. The ball is dribbled and carried forward. In competitive basketball variation there are lot of regulations and the handling of the ball is restricted. Less regulated versions have been developed for recreational purposes and in some countries, this game is considered as a spectator sport.

Initially a soccer ball was used in basketball after which a brown colored ball was introduced. But to increase the visibility of the ball to the players and spectators alike the color was changed to orange, in 1950s by Tony Hinkle. Initially dribbling wasn't a part of the game. It was included in the game in the 1950s.

Different versions have different rules and time limits. According to NBA, some of the rules have been discussed here. The basketball court should be 94 X 50 feet. There should be baskets on two opposite ends of the court. The court is either made out of wood or cement. The ten feet high basket is made out of steel rim with a net attached. One score, also called shot, is counted as two points or three points when aimed from a distance of 7.24 meter. The game is divided into four quarters which each of them with a time limit of twelve minutes.

A break of fifteen minutes is allowed after the first two quarter and in between each quarter, there is a break of two minutes. In the third quarter, both the teams exchange their baskets. At a time five members of each team are present on the court. Permission is given to have up to seven substitutes. Other than the coach assistant coaches, statisticians, managers, trainers and doctors assists a team. Other equipments, other than the ball, required during the game are scoreboard, score sheets, clocks, stop clocks, whistles, and alternating possession arrows.

The male and the female player require to wear a pair of shorts and a jersey with clear number printed on the front and the back. High-top sneakers can be worn to provide extra ankle support. Sometimes the coach can request clock stoppages in between the game, if he wants to discuss something important with his team members. Usually three referees watch over the game. Other things like timekeeping, fouls by an individual or a team, score, team possession arrow, shot clock and player substitutions are taken care of by the table officials.

Over the period of time, various positions have been developed in basketball. Initially there were one guard, two forwards, and two centers or two guards, two forwards, and one center. Later on point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center positions were added.

Actions, which lead to violations are double dribbling, traveling, and carrying the ball and shot clock. Foul is illegal physical contact with the opponent team members, which would hinder them.

Surfing is a kind of water sports where the surfer is carried along by a breaking wave towards the shore. Apart from surfboards body boards, kneeboards, surf skis and kayaks can be also used to surf. Open your drawer and look for a thick pair of pajamas or leggings. Get a good pair of socks and wear your usual bike shoes. The last thing you need is to be fashionable so you can wear anything as long as you can bear the cold night (unless you want to catch the attention of female insects and small animals which are busy searching for food).

Go to your garage and get the duct tape, a pair of scissors, your flashlight and your helmet. You know the drill, right? Find your gloves, preferably newly washed. Sunblock not required.
