In the LGBTQ community’s fight for acceptance and equality, African American members must face the daily challenges that come with identifying as LGBTQ, within society, as well as the black community. Recognizing this added complex, the African American LGBTQ citizens of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, NC have come together to form Shades of Pride/Triangle Black Pride.

The Triangle Black Pride (Facebook, Twitter) is a non-profit organization that seeks to both acknowledge and celebrate members of the African American LGBTQ community in the state of North Carolina. Established November 7th, 2009, the group later officially incorporated Shades of Pride on February 16th, 2010.

“An attempt was made by a previous group… [but] currently nothing exists to celebrate the diversity of the African American/black LGBTQ community,” Akil Campbell, Co-Chair of Shades of Pride, said. “Part of Shades of Pride/Triangle Black Pride’s goal is to create such opportunities.”

Shades of Pride/Triangle Black Pride also seeks to properly educate LGBTQ African-Americans on a variety of issues that affect the community.

“Part of our challenge is the effective dissemination of information throughout the African American LGBTQ community, as well as to our allies,” Campbell said.

“We have experienced success in this regard but there is still a lot more work to be done. As we provide these opportunities, we would also like to provide a venue for people to receive information to allow them to make better health decisions, maintain healthy relationships and plot steps for personal/professional growth.”

If you find yourself in the Raleigh, North Carolina area this week you definitely want to check out The Inaugural Triangle Black Pride 2010 event being held from July 29th-August 1st, 2010. The event aims to further push the organization’s ideals of educating and celebrating members of the African American LGBTQ community. A series of workshops, HIV/AIDS testing, celebrity appearances, a film festival and more will all take place during the weekend event!

For more information on the Inaugural event and/or Shades of Pride/Triangle Black Pride, please visit www.TriangleBlackPride.org or email info@TriangleBlackPride.org.

About Chrishelle (Chrissy) Griffin:
WRITER. PASSIONATE. AGENT FOR CHANGE. Born in the city of Brotherly Love, Chrishelle grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, a small city with nothing more than a school district and gas stations. In 2007, Chrishelle moved to Atlanta to attend Spelman College. Life in the South has its perks, but Chrishelle will always be a Northern girl at heart. Writing is her passion. Chrishelle believes some of the best literature can be found in the simplest quotes so she is constantly writing down her own light bulb expressions inspired by life’s experiences. Chrishelle writes in hopes of something new, something real… a means to an end. When Chrishelle is not writing, she always makes time for cooking, shopping, love, and laughter.

About a year ago, I found out the American Cancer Society was planning its first-ever LGBT-specific Relay for Life, its signature fundraising event. This is a big deal. Up to this point, the American Cancer Society has never done anything in the LGBT community, despite the fact that certain kinds of cancer disproportionately affect the LGBT community. For instance, anal cancer, thought to be caused by the HPV virus, affects gay men 17 times more often than straight men. It’s also higher for breast, lung, cervical and ovarian cancers. Yet no one seems to be aware of this. We did a national survey among LGBT adults and awareness of this was only about 10%.

So my firm, Reverberate Marketing Communications, has been working to raise awareness of cancer in the LGBT community and also to support the first-ever LGBT Relay for Life. The event will be held on Sept. 25, 2010 at the Winter Garden Atrium at the World Financial Center in New York City from 10am – 7pm. So far, we have gotten corporate sponsorship from Showtime Networks, Pfizer and a number of other companies (Reverberate included!).

But for many, this is just another disease – until it becomes personal. I was at a birthday party last year having a great time with friends, and it never occurred to me then that one of my friends (aged 47) would be dead from cancer less than a year later. My friend Danny Sanabria was diagnosed with stomach cancer a few months ago, and died very suddenly, within weeks of his diagnosis. It was very shocking and sad, and I am organizing a team at the Relay for Life event to remember and honor him.

The Relay for Life event is like a “festival of spirit” to celebrate those who have survived cancer, and to remember and honor those who have not. There will be entertainment, celebrities, local dignitaries, community fundraising events, etc. all day long, as participants “relay” (or walk) around the track. The theme of this year’s event is “Red Carpet Relay” (or Hollywood).

If you would like to join my team (or sponsor me), you can go to www.relayforlife.org/lgbt and click on “JOIN” or “DONATE” and then search for my name – Steve Deitsch. I would love to have your help with this important event!

I will be posting more over the coming weeks about the event, so see you soon!

Recently, I spoke with John Bramham, a long-term care specialist, for the past 17 years, John has been educating clients about the importance of Long Term Care insurance, as he prepares for his Out Impact Professional Teleseminar later this month (July 29, 7p EST), I talked with John about what long-term care is, its importance to the LGBT community, and the need of all people – young and old – to take note of their future needs.

Out Impact (OI): What is Genworth Financial, and how are you and it involved in the LGBT community?

John Bramham (JB): Genworth Financial is the U.S.’s largest Long-Term Care Insurance provider and a Fortune 500 company. We’ve been providing this protection longer than anyone else, for 35 years. We have paid out over $6 BILLION in claims to our clients.

OI: How long have you been providing this protection personally?

JB: I have been educating clients about long-term care for 17 years..I n 1994 I sold my first policy to a gay couple.I realized that gay and lesbian couples are particularly concerned about protecting their assets and NOT being a burden to there partner.

OI: Oh, so you must be the expert, then. Tell us, what is long-term care protection?

JB: I prefer the term educator. Long Term Care insurance can help protect your assets, help maintain your financial freedom and give you the options necessary to receive quality long term care whether at home, in an assisted living facility or a nursing home.

OI: Okay, so how does the protection work?

JB: You qualify for for covered benefits when you need assistance with at least TWO of the SIX activities of daily living which are transferring being unable to get from point A to point B without assistance, bathing, dressing, eating, toileting and incontinence. Or you need substantial supervision because of a severe cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Dementia is becoming a major problem as Americans are living much longer due mostly to modern medicine. You do not die from the stroke or heart attack but you may be left needing considerable daily care.
OI: So why would one need this protection?

JB: The problem with long-term care is that this is the one cost that can financial ruin you, potentially spending every penny you’ve saved during your lifetime. Long-term care comes about today because we are all living so much longer. At the time of the Mayflower, the expected age was 45. In 1920 life expectancy was 72,now in 2010, many clients live into there mid 80’s and beyond. average length of care is 3.5 to 4 years but Dementia and Alzheimer’s can go on for many more years. The national average median cost for one year in a private nursing home room is $$74,208.00. BUT it gets worse because if you do not require care for 15, 20 or even 30 years the estimated cost in 20 years is $202,871.00 FOR ONE YEAR FOR ONE PERSON. So potentially for a couple it could cost over one million dollars.

OI: Really? So how does this need compare to the needs of home, car owners, or life insurance?

JB: It is as important as life or home insurance. When you buy a house or a car, you get insurance. The chance of your home burning down is 2%, a car crash, 15%. The likelihood of one person in a couple needing care is 90%. Also, if you crash your car or home you can replace it. If long-term care impacts you, you only have two choices – have protection or write a check every month, which is what people do. In North Carolina, where I work, that amount is $6,000 per month. If you are writing that same check in 2030, it will be $12,000 monthly. This is why so many people spend all of their money, end up on Medicaid, and end up with a lien on their home, which is sold when they pass on, all to pay for the care.

This is the biggest financial impact on your life. I meet with people every week and they tell me that their parents lost everything. “My mom needed care” or “my dad needed care” and they spent everything and ended up on Medicaid and the government sold their home. There are currently 77 million baby boomers and it’s only going to get worse.

OI: Wow. So, why do you make a special commitment to the LGBT community, and why is long-term care important to this group?

JB: The first people I wrote long-term care protection for were gay. With my dealings with gay people, they tend to be very good savers, and they also like to travel. Most importantly, they want to take care of each other over the lifetime. Genworth Financial understands this, under our policy the term “couples” not only applies to spouses but also to two people who meet our criteria for living together in a committed relationship and sharing basic living expenses. We offer a 40% DISCOUNT for married or partnered couples with a 10% discount for those in good health so you potentially can save 50% each for a couple. Rates are calculated at the age you apply, your health, the coverages you choose. You MUST also build in an inflation rider to the policy so the benefits chosen today keep pace with the rising costs.I ALWAYS recommend a 5% compound rider.

The effort to get involved with the LGBT community is being made by primarily by me. I live in Asheville, North Carolina and we have a pretty large gay community that is not being looked after in terms of long-term care. More importantly, I want to get the issues out there so that the community understands the impact long-term care can have on their lives and finances.

OI: How does protection differ from state to state?

JB: Well, every year Genworth Financial does an annual cost of care across the nation and we know exactly what is the cost of care across the nation and they are very different. It really depends on not where you live but where you plan to retire. In North Carolina, the current cost is $71,175 per year; in Connecticut, the cost is $137,000. So if you talk to people, you should know where you plan to be. Ten years ago, people used to say Florida, but that’s not true any more. Florida is a still very popular destination but the cost for care per year is about $82,000 there.

OI: How much does this protection cost in general?

JB: That depends on your age, health, how much a month you need for care and how long would you need care. When we meet with potential clients, we have to find out what the couple’s financial situation is and how much care they can afford to pay. If the cost of care is $6,000 per month, and most couples can afford to pay only $1,000 per month from their savings, they may get protection to cover the other $5000 per month or what is appropriate for that couple. Most of my clients pay annually as they save 8% (much more than an annual certificate of deposit) over the monthly premium. My main job is to educate clients and then help them DESIGN a plan that will meet their NEEDS and BUDGET. It is also important to remember that if you have a healthy couple or partners who purchase long-term care, they can save 50% and basically cover two people for the price of one.

OI: How does one get this protection?

JB: I offer free consultations and people can do it over the phone. If they are in North Carolina or South Carolina, I can meet with them in person and offer a free consult. We usually start on the phone to find out their situation and health.Or we can do it over the internet.Once the plan is decided upon an application which can be done on line,is completed. We will get your doctors records and primarily base an acceptance or decline on your history. In older clients a cognitive interview is conducted to ensure the clients do not already have Dementia or Alzheimer’s.

OI: What are some of the misconceptions that people have about long-term care and long-term care protection?

JB: One of the biggest misconceptions is that Medicare will take care of you. Medicare actually only pays for what is called skilled care. Skilled care is defined by three things – being in the hospital for at least 3 days, being under a doctor’s care, and improving or getting better. If your condition is worsening, you get no coverage. Also, it pays 100% of costs for only 20 days and then a portion of the next 80 days. After 100 days, it pays nothing. Long-term care is called custodial care, and Medicare and its supplements pay 0.

Medicaid is made for people with no assets or have spent nearly all their assets. People needing long-term care go bankrupt and then end up on Medicaid. With Medicaid, a person cannot have home or assistant living access– he or she can only be supported at a state nursing home. Overall, the biggest misconception is that the state will take care of you.

OI: What is the main message that you want to get across to all of Out Impact’s readers and followers?

JB: The main message is that we’re trying to prevent a disaster, not cause a disaster. If you have a couple, there is a 90% chance that one of you will need care. In 20 years, that cost will be about $600,000. How will you pay for it?

If you get long-term care protection whilst you are younger and healthier, it’s relatively cheap. There is much more interest today than there was 10 years ago; it is being recommended by financial planners now, they recognize that it is a need. But word still needs to get out there.

OI: I think so, too. What will people be able to get out of your July Teleseminar with us on July 29th at 7p and how can people contact you for more information?

JB: With the July Seminar, people can get a lot of their questions answered, and they will have an opportunity to ask questions as well. I don’t know what the audience will be, though, so it should be interesting. For any other questions I can be e-mailed at jbramham@genworthltc.com. Or you can contact me at 864 770-5602 or 828 713-5803. Please always leave a message stating your name, phone number and best time to call back if I do not answer. Your call will be returned.

OI: I look forward to it. Thank you for chatting with us.

“Gay Prohibition Corrupts Cops Feeds Mafia”

Growing up you likely learn about the Civil Rights Movement, Women’s Suffrage and other struggles of the minority striving to achieve equality; however, you may have never learned of the 3-day riot that sparked the revolt known as the Gay Rights Movement; up until recently, neither had I.

The Stonewall Uprising, directed/produced by Kate David and David Heilbroner, is a compelling and inspirational documentary that is taking movie goers by storm. Entitled after the event’s historical reference, The Stonewall Uprising features first-hand testimonies from participants, as well as the leading officer from the raid, on the events surrounding the 1969 riots at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar owned and operated by the Mafia.

It is hard to believe that just over 40 years ago, homosexuality was considered to be the result of a psychopathic disease and/or a mental defect. But as I think about this nation’s history, I find myself reflecting upon all the times it was declared that something or someone was abnormal and/or not in line with the social norm set in place by “higher authorities.” Furthermore, the extremes said authorities went to in order to repress that which was foreign to them out of nothing more than fear of the unknown. One of the prominent means of “rehabilitation” for members of the LGBT community, during this time, was known as “chemical water boarding,” an administered drug that simulated drowning.

The film also highlights the first ever Gay Pride Parade, in New York, that followed the Stonewall riots. In June of 1970 people from all walks of life came together to march from the Village to Central Park in the state of New York celebrating the progress that resulted from the 3-day riot and the hope of change to come. Ironically, the film’s debut in Philadelphia followed shortly after the city’s 22nd Annual Pride Parade and Festival.

I definitely recommend that audiences, from all backgrounds, go out and experience The Stonewall Uprising.
“This Is My Time” is inspirational and pulled me in right away with the perfect way to kick off their debut album. “Twisting and Turning” is what the name implies, a song that feels pretty restless. “Emergency Yeah!” is full of energy, and perfect for being a constant on their set list for a live show. The two songs I didn’t feel any connection to was “Whisper” and “Interrupting Your Freedom.” “Red Lights Flashing” I think would be even more compelling if they did an acoustic version, even though their album version has lots of power, I would like to hear a different take. Sometimes Lights On remind me of rockers’ Green Day and U2 – and that’s a good thing.

“We Live Underground” is cinema-feature worthy, and one of the best tracks on Here Comes The Ocean. “There’s No Reason” is brilliant rock n’ roll with the drums pacing hard until the end, that breathes life into the song. “We’ll Have A Real Good Time” is what it is, and reminds me of a harder version of Tom Petty’s music. “She Comes Walking Down Slowly” is rock poetry, and “It Never Stops” is celestial, Coldplay-type sound. Lights On is a band with many musical layers and diverse sound that will leave you pleased and looking forward to more from them in future releases.

Our review of some crazy but incredible punk/techno/hip hop/rock music from AWOLNATION that is a must-listen and the answer to Pop Music that you can't stand.

<img src="http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.outimpact.com%2Fentertainment%2Fmusic-entertainment%2Falbum-reviews%2Fawol-awolnation-oniback-earthi-4175" height="61" width="51" title="Going AWOL with AWOLNATION on Back from Earth" alt=" Going AWOL with AWOLNATION on Back from Earth" />

by Bambi Weavil (Twitter, Facebook)

AWOLNATION’s Back From Earth is going to shake you up, and is the answer against pop music that makes you want to vomit in your mouth. It’s not just music, it’s a crusade designed to fight all that’s fake, commercialized, compromised and debased in popular culture. AWOLNATION (MySpace, Twitter, Facebook) pushes musical genres into a punk rock fury, with hip hop nd techno beats, and brings on the real.

Back From Earth makes a big, first impression with “Burn It Down,” a furious blitz punk rock style in the tone of Black Flag and the Clash, with some techno beats blitzing the walls like Boyz Noize and Justice, and some overtones of Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard throughout, this is not preaching burning down the establishment, but cleansing past mistakes to make way for future hope.

“Guilty, Filthy Soul” has a sweet Queen/David Bowie “Under Pressure” swirl with some Beatles’ influence like a good Rock Gods Gospel number, that focuses on taking full responsibility for the circumstances he’s in. “Sail” is darker with hip-hop beats and lyrics like “Blame it on my A.D.D. / This is how angels die” and obsessing on topics like surfing, John Lennon’s primal scream era and Radiohead trips.

“MF” is what you think it stands for, like a harder Beastie Boys’ rock/hip hop styling and bold lyrics like: “radio is killing America, can you feel the hysteria?” We can get down with AWOLNATION, and looking forward for them to keep on bringing it.

Don’t miss them – go, go, go and get blasted with some incredible music:

In 1997, Sarah McLachlan convinced some of the most powerful women in music to get together and sing for the Lilith Fair (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube). They sang for three years because they wanted to entertain but most importantly, they sang to raise money for national and local charities. One and a half million fans showed up to witnesses this memorable experience and helped raise money by paying over $10 million dollars combined to be a part of it. Artists like Sheryl Crow, Christina Aguilera, Erykah Badu, The Dixie Chicks, Missy Elliott, The Pretenders, Nelly Furtado, Jewel, Queen Latifah, Indigo Girls, Tegan and Sara, and of course, Sarah McLachlan were all there to make this the only tour of its kind and perhaps one of the most thrilling of all time.

Now, thirteen years later, in 2010, these same artists as well as tons of new artists from the millennium are back together to sing for us. Sarah McLachlan has been living her own life and making her own music for awhile. This year, however, after going on hiatus for seven years, she has come back from the dark and is ready to put some light and soul into her life and everyone else’s around her. She knows it’s been a rough decade for all of us and we need music to fill us up so we can feel good again. She’s putting the happy back into us.
Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to make it to the big show but for those of you who can’t, you’re still in luck. There has been an astounding album put together by a lot of the artists for this tour, the Lilith 2010 Tour Compilation. The first song by Sarah McLachlan, “One Dream” basically sums up the entire reasoning behind putting together another tour with opening lines like “We can feel a change is coming / Like a kiss upon the tide/ Breathing life into every heart/ A hope for kinder times..” Sticking with the same theme, Tegan and Sara’s song “Hell” with lyrics like “Four ways remove all the bad that we do/From the heart and soul of the city, sad and cold / Four ways to collect what we say and what we save / To discard and discover a brand new way…”

Of course, there are a few fun, but less meaningful, songs on the assemblage from artists like Kei$ha’s hit “Tik Tok.” I especially like Ash Koley’s song, “Brighter at Night.” I admit this is my first time hearing this song and it has such a great hook: “We can speed in my car, run the traffic lights with no sun in our eyes/We can do what we like if you don’t mind/We’re much brighter at night…” There are sixteen tracks in all and it’s a very eclectic mixture of new artists versus classic artists.

Ms. McLachlan has invited too many artists for me to even list for the Lilith 2010 tour, but I’ll give you a sneak peek: Kelly Clarkson will be there. Martina McBride, Colbie Caillat, and Kei$ha will be there. Sara Bareilles, Brandi Carlile, Chantel Kreviazuk, Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow, and also…wait for it. Wait for it….Rihanna will be in your town, Sugarland, Queen Latifah, Mary J Blige, Miranda Lambert, and of course the founder herself, Sarah McLachlan will ALL be there. That was more than a peek but I couldn’t resist. Why wouldn’t you want to go to this concert? I think even hundreds, if not thousands, of men will want to come to this festival. That’s not to say they’d ever admit it. There will be so much talent in one place it will be like having an ear orgasm. Or more appropriately, an “All you can eat” buffet only with music for your ears. Music is food for the soul. Eat it up!
