My first week editing Links a la Mode and so many amazing posts to choose only 20 from! Today marks the first day of summer for the northern hemisphere and judging by my choice below, I am willing summer to start in earnest in the UK! Just a warning, this post is pretty personal. And not very peppy. If you're coming off a Father's Day-brunch high, maybe skip this one. I love you and I'm glad your dad is awesome, but honey, some people's aren't and I wanna write about it.

I wasn't going to post this here, but then I thought, I can't be the only person who feels regret on Father's Day. I can't be the only one who had the opportunity to talk to their father today, and didn't.

After the twenty-four hour long stream of Instagram posts involving baby pictures and loving shout outs to heroic and wise dads, I was feeling a little left out, a little guilty because I don't join in these festivities. I have friends who miss their departed dads every day, friends who adore their dads and seek out their opinions. Sure my dad isn't a prize winner, but he wasn't abusive, either. Just selfish and ill-equipped, I suppose. So much so that as an adult, I find it easier to live my life without contact with him.

The night before last, my mom found out her birth father had died. She found this out in a letter from the tiny Austrian town my mother was born in. The extended family and friends of deceased persons are mailed these black-edged, professionally printed pages; growing up, there was an ever-growing stack of them on the side of the fridge, mostly with first names and faces of people I didn't know or didn't remember. But this one is for my grandfather, a man I met two or three times. His widow neglected to find a way to breach the time difference from Europe to California to tell my mother that her father had died on May 29 and was buried the following Friday, and mail takes weeks. Reconciled only in the past fifteen years or so, my mom is mourning not his loss exactly, but the fact that they can't get to know each other better now. She regrets the time they didn't have together.

Whereas I regret all the times he let my mom and I down, all the hours I waited longingly for him to come for me, sitting by the window with my little suitcase. I regret all the times I spent with my dad and couldn't find a way to look up to him, to respect or feel safe with him. Whether he was setting me in the bed of a pickup truck surrounded by barking dogs while he conducted a leisurely drug deal or picking up pretty young hitchhikers and making me move to the backseat while he creepily hit on them, or whether he was burning a hole in my favorite clothes by using them as a lampshade or leaving me sitting on the front lawn of my middle school until dusk because somehow it was hard to fit picking me up from school once a week into his busy schedule.

Forgiveness is supposed to be the key to moving on, to letting go of the past. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to forgive so much as try to forget.

If a skirt can't be worn with freedom and comfort, it's probably not worth wearing (for more than hour). Not only does this little swingin' number from oasap keep it's cool with side pockets (my favorite) but it has little built in shorts to save you from any mini indiscretion! The summery turquoise color and sassy pleats caught my eye immediately.

I am so satisfied with how my first attempt at galaxy t-shirt using bleach came out. I turned an old band shirt inside out to give me a "new" canvas to spray with water/bleach solution. The sun has been shining it's hardest lately (cue the farmer's burn at the baseball game) but it helped the lightening efforts a lot. Next I want to lighten wavy stripes into some skinny jeans and tie-dye bleach some cut-offs. I knew I should have picked up the larger Clorox bottle! I used {this tutorial} ♥

There's about twelve working buttons and four tassels involved in this outfit. I thought that was worth noting. If the buttons were all on the back, I'd need someone to dress me like a Victorian woman (or man). Shoulda worn my lace-up black booties! I know the Victorian resemblance stops at the buttons, though. For today's standards, the long-sleeve feels very modest, no? As often as I feel I was born in the wrong era, I wouldn't actually trade this one for anything!

I'm not usually a "tote" type of bag toter, when I found the Stuttgart tote at a thrift store and had to get it. My mother comes from Austria and her parents reside in Germany, so while I've never actually been to the city of Stuttgart, the print still reminds of our summertime visits to the country. Even though I live in California and have easy access to some pretty great views, there's something about the greenery in Europe that I miss. And the food and ice cream!

Why hello there pals, how are ya this fine Friday? I'm pretty darn great, just happily luxuriating in the wonderful warm weather with my fave shorts on, sipping a deliciously sweet guava mojito I made with mint from my garden. I was feeling pretty nautical (these sailor shorts sure have that tendency) until I mixed in the blue and pink floral shoes with the blue-toned outfit. No way would a real sailor have swabbed the deck in short-shorts and kitten heels... or would they?

I'm also really really looking forward to tomorrow. For months now, Eric and I have only had one day off work together each week, and the few hours we squeeze in at night don't always add up as great "quality time." Tomorrow, we will get to spend the entire day together, at a baseball game in San Francisco. There might even be a little stop into a Sephora, if I can manage it! Life is sweet ♥

I've been meaning to do up a pretty, simple diy earring rack to store and display my h&m and thrifted baubles for many moons, and I finally got around to making it!

I found what I needed at the thrift store for just a few dollars: a picture frame with removable backing and a lace camisole from the lingerie section. I used a staple gun to attach the lace to the back of the frame. A glue gun would also work, as long as you let each side dry completely before moving on to the next.

The lace was very stretchy, which wasn't the best to work with. I couldn't find any vintage curtains or doilies this time, but those would be a perfect source of lace, especially for a larger frame. Or you could use fabric trim, cord or wire! Here's some image inspiration ♥

Last weekend my little fam took a trip down to Big Sur for a belated Mother's Day lunch at Nepenthe. I took so many photos this is going to be a two-parter. I'll start with a bit of the drive down Highway One, which is beautiful and scenic and highly recommended to anyone visiting California's coast. Also known as Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH, this 655 mile (mostly) two lane roadway runs from along nearly two-thirds of California's Pacific coast. Big Sur itself consists of about ninety miles of wild, rocky coastline that has long been known for it's savage beauty, remote access and sparse population.

Oreo came along, though she wasn't allowed in the restaurant. She enjoyed the drive and the walk we went on later in Los Padres National Forest. But for now, on to Nepenthe. Nestled right off the highway on the hills overlooking the ocean, the restaurant was founded by the Fassett family in a log cabin on the spot in the late forties. The previous owners were Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth, who bought the rustic wooden cabin on the cliff using pocket change during a drive to L.A. on the (then) new scenic Highway One. Though the volatile couple never actually returned to the spot after that occasion, they were only a few of the many roving artists to be captivated by the area's torrid charms.

The word nepenthe itself comes from Greek: to remedy sadness or ease sorrow. As the website says, "In Greek, Nepenthe means 'isle of no care,' a place to find surcease from sorrow. So it continues to be for travelers today. A place to stop, to dream, to lift a cup to kindness..." And it certainly has become such a stopping point, and not just because of it's spectacular views of the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Eric enjoyed the restaurant's popular Ambrosia burger, while mom and I sampled the artichoke, Mexican spiced grilled prawns on green tea noodles, albacore tuna sandwich, and an amazing layered lemony cake with raspberry mousse for dessert. That's what I call a surcease from sorrow, yum!

We were lucky enough to miss the ever-present fog that hounds the central coast. It started to roll in just as we were taking a few goodbye photos of the Phoenix and checking out the gift shop. The statue was carved in the seventies out of the fallen trunk of a solid old oak tree that had grown on the property for many years. In the late sixties, a dancing scene was filmed on the patio by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor for the film "The Sandpiper." The wire cage in the left background is the fire pit, it looks exactly the same!

The Red Hot Chili Peppers mention the area in "Road Trippin.'" Hunter S. Thompson worked at the hot springs up the road. Jack Kerouac recounts a bender there in his 1962 novel Big Sur, which is currently on its way to being released as a movie starring Josh Lucas and Kate Bosworth and with a soundtrack by The National (um, I hope it beats the hell out of The Rum Diaries movie!) Henry Miller wrote of his nearly two decades in and around Nepenthe in Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch. On Saturday Eric, Oreo, my mom and I headed down Highway One to Big Sur for a belated Mother's Day treat. Lucky lucky us, it was a beautiful day. I would have worn cropped pencil pants to complete the starlet-on-retreat vibe, but I settled on my trusty jeans, cuffed. We had lunch at Nepenthe, a lovely place overlooking a pristine expanse of Pacific Ocean, and walked to a little forest waterfall in the hills afterward. It was actually almost a hike, so I switched into Van's for that part. Stay tuned for more photos of the trip (and food!) later this week ♥

P.S. That brown plant is an extremely tall dormant agave plant. Usually they're around man height; this one and it's partner are growing close to thirty feet tall!

Ya gotta love the affordability of felt—it's about forty cents for an 8.5 x 11" sheet. Using the basic stitches on your sewing machine, colorful thread, and perhaps a bit of chalk pencil to guide you, these squares can be made into cool coasters for cheap! I got the idea from this Martha Stewart article.
