No matter how many new cafés, trendy eateries, or hidden food spots I discover in Binondo, I always return to Masuki.

And after countless visits, I have come to realize that Masuki is not just a restaurant. It is a ritual. A memory. A homecoming.

Benavidez itself is a sensory adventure—crowded sidewalks, colorful Chinese lanterns, the scent of incense drifting from nearby establishments, and the constant rhythm of conversations in Filipino, English, Hokkien, and Mandarin blending into one vibrant soundtrack.

Finding Masuki is easy, but you could miss it if you’re distracted by the dozens of tempting nearby eateries. The restaurant doesn’t rely on flashy exteriors or oversized signage. Instead, it carries the quiet confidence of a place that knows people will find their way back.

And I always do.

Sometimes I arrive early in the morning, when Binondo is just waking up, and shopkeepers are lifting their steel shutters. Other times, I arrive in the afternoon, after a long day of exploring Escolta, visiting Chinatown museums, or photographing old architecture. No matter the time, seeing Masuki’s familiar façade always gives me a strange sense of comfort.

Interesting Things That Make Masuki Special

What fascinates me most about Masuki is how it preserves traditions that many modern restaurants have abandoned.

One of its most distinctive practices is its famously old-school way of serving tea. Instead of trendy drinks or elaborate presentations, you’re often welcomed with a simple pot of hot Chinese tea—warm, aromatic, and grounding. Before I even glance at the menu, I pour myself a cup. It feels less like ordering food and more like participating in a ritual that countless diners before me have shared.

Another interesting detail is how many families in Manila treat Masuki as a multi-generational meeting place. I’ve sat beside elderly couples who have probably been dining there for fifty years, young professionals introducing their friends to Binondo food culture, and entire families with children eagerly slurping noodles.

Masuki isn’t just feeding people. It’s quietly connecting generations.

And perhaps the most impressive fact of all is that, despite being surrounded by an ever-changing food scene, Masuki has remained relevant without chasing trends. It has survived by doing one thing exceptionally well: serving honest, comforting food.

The first time I ate at Masuki, I ordered what most regulars recommended: Mami with Asado and Wanton.

And then there was the asado. Tender, sweet, savory, and deeply aromatic, Masuki’s asado is something I still think about days after every visit. Each slice carries just enough sweetness to balance the savory broth, creating a harmony that feels almost impossible to replicate.

Of course, no bowl is complete without their wanton—delicate dumplings wrapped in silky skins, floating like little treasures in the soup.

Over time, I explored more of the menu.

Their Beef Mami became one of my rainy-day favorites, rich and comforting in a way that makes you slow down and appreciate every bite.

Their Siopao Asado surprised me with its soft, fluffy bun and flavorful filling. And then there’s their famous Kiampong, a savory rice dish that carries a deeply satisfying, almost home-cooked warmth.

But no matter what else I order, I always return to that classic bowl of mami. It feels almost wrong not to.

Why I Keep Coming Back

I’ve asked myself this question many times. Why Masuki?

Why, after trying so many restaurants in Binondo—some more modern, some more hyped, some with longer lines—do I always find myself back at the same table, holding the same porcelain spoon, sipping the same broth?

A field trip 2.0 with adult money, history obsession, and a mom who suddenly becomes your favorite travel buddy.

I grew up in Santa Rosa, where life feels softer, slower, and more familiar in a way that makes you forget how close Manila actually is.

For the longest time, Manila to me was just work. Meetings. Traffic that tests your patience. Quick coffee stops that are more about caffeine survival than anything meaningful. I have worked in Manila enough to know its rhythm, its rush, and its ability to drain you before lunch.

But I never really knew Manila like this. Not until I started exploring it with my mama.

Somewhere between heritage streets and museum hallways, Manila stopped being “work Manila” and turned into something else entirely. It became field trip 2.0, except this time you are older, slightly more patient, and you finally have adult money for coffee, entrance fees, and spontaneous dessert stops you used to say no to when you were younger.

This is not just a list. It is a day that feels like a memory as it happens.

1. Fort Santiago

Fort Santiago is not loud. It does not rush you. It does the opposite; it makes you slow down, whether you planned to or not. The stone walls feel heavy with stories, and the walkways make you suddenly aware that you are standing in a place that has seen centuries of everything.

Entrance is around 75 pesos, which already feels like a small ticket into something much bigger than what you expect.

Inside, there is more than just old walls and open courtyards. You will find the Rizal Shrine Museum, where the life and final moments of Jose Rizal are carefully laid out in a way that feels both educational and quietly emotional. There is also a dungeon area that reminds you that this place was not just beautiful but once very real, very heavy, and part of deeper historical layers you can still feel as you walk through it.

And then there is the photobooth area, which sounds simple but ends up becoming one of those unexpected highlights. You and your mom end up laughing, adjusting, retaking photos, and suddenly the trip feels even more personal, like you are freezing a memory inside a place already full of history.

2. Papa Kape

After Fort Santiago, everything feels like it deserves coffee.

Papa Kape is a solid stop to slow down, rest your feet, and just talk. The coffee is honestly to die for, really divine, and the kind you end up thinking about even after you leave. I love the ambiance too, it is relaxed, a bit artsy, and not trying too hard, which makes it easy to stay longer than planned.

Moms and coffee are also a very underrated combination. Once the drinks arrive, the conversation just naturally opens up. She starts talking about her younger days, random opinions you did not ask for, and small life lessons that somehow make sense when you are sitting there with her.

Another fun part, they also have cats around. If you visit, check out the cutest one named Tiago. He just adds to the place’s chill vibe.

3. Casa Manila

Casa Manila feels like stepping into a preserved memory of old Filipino life.
The wooden floors, capiz windows, and antique furniture make the space feel like it is holding its breath. It is carefully maintained, almost like someone is waiting for the original family to walk back in.

And your mom will love this part more than you expect.

She will point at objects and say things like, “We used to have something like this.” Or, “This is how houses used to be.” Suddenly, you are not just walking through a museum. You are walking through her version of history, which somehow feels more alive than anything written on the walls.
Casa Manila is where the conversation shifts from “look at this place” to “remember when.”

4. Bahay Tsinoy

Bahay Tsinoy tells the story of Filipino Chinese heritage in a way that feels layered, emotional, and deeply human. It is not just about objects or displays. It is about belonging, migration, culture, and the fact that identities are never just one thing.

This is also the first time we learned that San Lorenzo Ruiz is half Chinese, which honestly caught us off guard for a bit. It is one of those quiet museum moments where you do not expect to learn something that shifts how you see familiar names in history, but suddenly you do.

Inside, everything feels more reflective than informational. It is not loud or overwhelming. It gently shows how deeply intertwined Filipino and Chinese histories are, in ways that feel both personal and national.

With your mom, this becomes even more interesting because it opens up conversations you usually do not have at home. About ancestry, identity, and how stories travel across generations without us always noticing.

Bahay Tsinoy is one of the few stops on this route that is not free, but it is worth it. Not because it is grand, but because it makes you pause and think longer than you planned.

5. National Museum of Anthropology

This museum is free, and that already feels like a gift.

But what makes it special is not the price. It is the experience.

We actually keep coming back to the National Museum of Natural History because it is more kid-friendly, more visually engaging, and easier to take in when you just want something light and interactive. It is the kind of museum you can casually walk through without needing to pause too deeply at every corner.

But Anthropology hits differently.

It is slower, quieter, and more culturally fulfilling in a way that feels best experienced when you are with your mom. There is something about walking through it with her where every artifact feels like it has a story she is more than willing to sit with. She reads every label properly. No skipping. No rushing. And somehow, you end up doing the same.

It becomes less about seeing and more about understanding. You slow down without realizing it. You start noticing details you would normally pass by.
I might actually plan a visit with her to the National Museum of Fine Arts next time, especially since

Papa Kape just opened a branch on the fourth floor. That alone feels like a perfect excuse to make it a full day again.

6. Ilustrado

Ilustrado feels like a pause button in the middle of Intramuros.

The food is classic Filipino Spanish, and the setting carries that old Manila elegance without trying too hard. It is not loud or flashy. It is steady, warm, and intentional, the kind of place that naturally slows you down after a morning of walking and talking.

I’ve been here twice already, and both times I went straight for their pork adobo and chicken adobo. No experimenting, no overthinking. Just the safe choices that somehow always deliver.

Quick note, their servings are pretty generous, so it is definitely worth the stop. You do not leave here feeling like you needed more food, which honestly matters when you have already been walking around Intramuros for hours.

7. Barbara’s Heritage Restaurant

Barbara’s feels like stepping into a different version of Manila.

There is a buffet option priced around 1600 pesos, but if that feels like too much, the al fresco à la carte dining is a softer choice. Either way, the place carries a kind of heritage charm that makes everything feel a little more special than usual.

This is where your mom relaxes differently.

The environment is elegant but not intimidating. Conversations slow down again. You start noticing small details, the lighting, the interiors, the quiet rhythm of people enjoying their meal.

If you are ordering à la carte, the bistek and the bangus are solid choices. The bistek is comforting in that familiar, home-style way, while the bangus feels like the kind of dish that always makes sense, no matter what you already had that day.

8. Centro de Turismo Intramuros

Before you fully explore Intramuros, this is a good starting point.

Centro de Turismo Intramuros helps set the context. It is where you get oriented, understand what you are about to see, and the day starts to feel more intentional.

It is also built on the site of the former San Ignacio Church, adding a quiet layer of history even before you begin the walk. Inside, you will also find a small Filipiniana collection that offers an early glimpse of the culture and heritage you will come to see more deeply around Intramuros.

There is also a kids’ library inside, which makes it feel surprisingly warm and welcoming, like a space that is not just for tourists but also for learning in a softer way.

9. The Dessert Museum

After history and heritage, this is where things get fun again.

The Dessert Museum is colorful, interactive, and very different from everything else in this list. It feels like stepping into a different world where the only goal is to enjoy yourself and take photos that make you laugh later.

Your mom might pretend she is just going along with it for you. But she will enjoy it.
There is something about playful spaces that makes even adults loosen up. You stop analyzing everything and just experience it. It is a nice contrast to the museums and old streets earlier in the day.

10. Binondo

End here because no Manila day should end without food. Or this can go first before your Dessert Museum date.

Binondo is alive in a completely different way. It is busy, layered, and full of small discoveries. You walk, you eat, you stop, you continue again. It is not structured, and that is what makes it perfect.
This is where everything from the day settles. The walking. The talking. The museum facts. The coffee breaks. The laughter in between.

You do not just eat here. You experience the end of the day.

A small note about museums and entry fees

Most museums along this route are free, especially the National Museum of Anthropology, Fine Arts, and Natural History, as well as many Intramuros museums, such as Fort Santiago and its surroundings, and cultural sites.

The exceptions are Bahay Tsinoy and the San Agustin Museum, which typically charge an admission fee. Everything else in the museum-heavy part of Intramuros is generally accessible without a fee.

Why does this hit differently?

There is something about Manila when you stop rushing through it. It stops being noise and starts becoming stories. And when you bring your mom into it, everything changes again. You are no longer just walking through a city. You are walking through shared memories, rediscovered histories, and conversations you did not know you needed.

Something you will probably want to do again without waiting for Mother’s Day.

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) announced today a partnership with Ticketmaster to create SM Ticketmaster, which will take over the ticketing services currently provided by SM Tickets. This new service marks Ticketmaster’s debut in the Philippines, aligning with the increasing demand for live events in the country—ranging from club shows and major concerts to sporting events—while also expanding SM Prime’s ticketing operations.

SM Ticketmaster will integrate Ticketmaster’s worldwide ticketing technology, innovative products, and fraud prevention skills with SM Prime’s extensive local operations and market knowledge in the Philippines.

“Our goal is to make the ticket-buying experience more reliable, secure and convenient for customers,” said Jeffrey C. foodpanda Philippines introduced nationwide, incentivized add-on quests to supplement its existing incentive program. From March to May 2026, it provided over PHP 62 million in support incentives to its Ka-panda delivery partners. The Ka-panda Motorcycle Quest enabled riders in Metro Manila and provincial areas to earn extra payouts by reaching delivery milestones throughout the day. These quests required no additional requirements other than completing the target number of orders, encouraging more riders to participate while continuing their regular deliveries.

foodpanda reported high engagement, with approximately 95 percent of active riders completing the quests.

Ron Sanders, Rider Experience Lead at foodpanda Philippines, explained that in addition to the add-on incentives, foodpanda frequently introduces weekly quests. These quests let riders earn extra rewards by achieving a specific delivery target within a designated timeframe while also adhering to platform standards such as acceptance rate and attendance.

Sanders stated that the initiative demonstrates the company’s ongoing dedication to supporting its delivery partner community amidst evolving market conditions.

“Since rolling out these add-on incentive quests in March, we’ve seen how these initiatives can help support our riders’ day-to-day operations while providing more flexible earning opportunities on the platform,” Sanders said.

For Ka-panda delivery partner Hervie Agustin, the incentives made it easier to cover daily expenses.

“Malaking tulong para sa amin na may dagdag incentives kasi may pandagdag sa pang-gas at pang-araw-araw na gastos. Kahit simpleng extra income lang, malaking bagay na rin iyon para sa pamilya,” Agustin shared.

Beyond the add-on incentive quests, foodpanda introduced other initiatives aimed at riders. During its nationwide Double-Tipping campaign on Labor Day, customers gave over PHP 1.2 million in in-app tips to Ka-panda riders, which foodpanda matched peso-for-peso, totaling P2.4 million in rider payouts.

These initiatives are part of foodpanda’s Panda-Malasakit Project, a comprehensive effort that combines programs aimed at supporting riders, customers, and partners through valuable earning opportunities and community-focused initiatives across the platform.

Taipei is one of those cities that looks beautiful in photos and then somehow exceeds every expectation once you’re actually there. The temples, the night markets, the mountain views, the meticulously clean streets — it all comes together.

Taipei is the capital of Taiwan, a small island nation in East Asia, and it is one of the most underrated family-friendly destinations in the region. The city is easy to navigate, the public transport runs like clockwork, and almost everywhere we went, Audrey was welcome and entertained. For families with young children, Taiwan makes it even easier: kids under six years old, or under 115 cm in height, travel for free on public transport and enjoy free or heavily discounted admission to most top attractions and museums.

For Filipino travelers, Taipei is also one of the most accessible international destinations right now. Taiwan’s visa-free entry program allows Filipino passport holders to visit for up to 14 days without submitting a visa application. The program has been renewed annually since 2017 and is currently extended until July 31, 2026. It keeps getting extended, which is great news, but always check for updates before you book.

We visited Taipei as a family of three, and it remains one of our favorite international trips to date. If you are planning a family vacation to Taiwan, this list is a good place to start.

Taipei Zoo

Let’s start with the one that Audrey requested by name the moment we landed.

Taipei Zoo is one of the largest zoos in Asia, and it really earns that title. The grounds are spacious and well-maintained. Families can move through different sections without feeling rushed or overwhelmed

The giant pandas are the obvious highlight, but the children’s zoo area, the koala exhibit, and the tropical rainforest section kept Audrey engaged for hours.

TIP: Arrive early and head to the panda exhibit first. The lines build up quickly by mid-morning, and you want to give yourself enough time before the crowds arrive. Strollers are also available for rent, just in case your kids decide walking is no longer something they do.

The zoo also has a gondola connection to Maokong, which leads perfectly into the next stop on this list.

Maokong Gondola

Right after the zoo, we rode the Maokong Gondola, and it was one of those simple moments that stay with you.

The gondola travels from the zoo up into the hills of Maokong, a tea-growing area with sweeping views over Taipei. The ride takes about thirty minutes and passes over green hills and temple rooftops. Audrey pressed her face against the glass the entire way up.

At the top, you can visit a tea house and try Taiwanese oolong. It is a cool, welcome break from the busier parts of the city.

TIP: Book the Crystal Cabin if it is available. The glass floor panel makes the ride significantly more dramatic, and kids absolutely love it.

Taipei Children’s Amusement Park

This one was built specifically for families. The Taipei Children’s Amusement Park is a small but well-designed amusement park with rides, a small roller coaster, a carousel, and plenty of open space for younger kids to roam. Admission is very affordable, and the rides are priced reasonably per ticket.

It is not a massive theme park, so manage your expectations accordingly. But as a half-day activity for families with kids between four and twelve, it works really well. Audrey was thrilled from start to finish.

TIP: The Children’s Amusement Park sits right next to the National Taiwan Science Education Center and the Taipei Astronomical Museum. All three are within walking distance of each other in the Shilin area, so you can easily plan a full day around this cluster.

Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the Children’s Art Education Center

The Taipei Fine Arts Museum, known as TFAM, is one of the best contemporary art museums in Asia. The building itself is architecturally striking, and the rotating exhibitions tend to include immersive, visually dynamic installations that hold children’s attention in ways that traditional galleries often do not.

What makes TFAM particularly special for families is the Children’s Art Education Center in the museum’s basement. It opened on Children’s Day in 2014 and was designed specifically to create a contemporary art space centered on shared experiences between parents and children. During our visit, the featured project was called “Seeking Form and Making Landscape,” which extended from artist Mei-Ling Hong’s “Looking for Tao” series. The space had building blocks of various sizes and shapes that children could stack and arrange to create their own paths and landscapes. Audrey spent a long time there, completely absorbed.

The concept of the center is to let children perceive the world from an artist’s perspective rather than simply looking at art from the outside. It works, and we stayed far longer than planned.

The museum sits beside a riverside park, so after your visit, you can walk along the water, grab a snack from a nearby vendor, and let the kids decompress with some open space.

TIP: Check the museum’s website before your visit to see what exhibitions and Children’s Art Education Center projects are currently running. The programming rotates, and some installations are more hands-on than others.

Taipei 101

No trip to Taipei is complete without at least seeing Taipei 101, and if your budget allows, going up is absolutely worth it.

The observation deck on the 89th floor offers a stunning 360-degree view of the city on a clear day. The building itself is an engineering landmark, and the indoor observatory is well-designed with interactive displays that older kids find genuinely interesting.

The mall at the base of the tower is also worth a visit, particularly for the food court and basement level, where you can find a wide range of local snacks and Taiwanese food at reasonable prices.

Ximending Night Market

Save this for the evening, and go hungry.

Ximending Night Market is the most famous night market in Taipei, and it earns its reputation not just for its scale but also for its variety. You will find stinky tofu, scallion pancakes, oyster vermicelli, grilled corn, fresh fruit juice, bubble tea, and a hundred other things you will want to try. It gets crowded and loud, and it is wonderful.

TIP: Carry cash. Many stalls do not accept cards, and ATMs around the market can have long lines later in the evening.

National Taiwan Science Education Center

If your child has any curiosity about how the world works, this place will hold their attention for hours.

The National Taiwan Science Education Center is loaded with high-tech facilities across multiple floors. Life science and natural science displays fill the third and fourth floors, while material science, math, and earth sciences are on the fifth and sixth floors, alongside the SkyCycle, where visitors can ride a bike twenty meters up in the air.

The center is a top pick for families with children roughly aged four to twelve, though honestly, adults get drawn in too.

TIP: Combining your visit with the adjacent Children’s Amusement Park makes for a full day of family fun. The Taipei Astronomical Museum is also right nearby, so you can plan all three in one go if you have the energy.

Taipei Astronomical Museum

This one surprised us. I expected a quiet, slightly dry museum about stars. What we got was something much more immersive.

The Taipei Astronomical Museum transforms complex astronomical knowledge into engaging and accessible experiences through interactive exhibits. From the planets of the solar system to the birth of stars, both children and adults can grasp astronomical principles through hands-on activities and observation. The most popular attractions are the Cosmic Theater and the 3D Planetarium shows, where visitors sit under a dome and feel as if they are immersed in an endless sea of stars.

There is also the Cosmic Adventure ride, which takes you through the solar system, the Milky Way, and distant galaxies in a ten-minute dark ride. Audrey came out of it wanting to be an astronaut. That feeling lasted approximately one hour before she went back to wanting to be a veterinarian, but still.

TIP: The exhibit hall entry fee is very affordable, and children below seven enter for free. Separate tickets are needed for the Cosmic Adventure ride, so factor this into your budget. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Honoring OFWs: Free Intramuros Heritage Access and Guided Tours from DOT

In recognition of the invaluable contributions and sacrifices made by Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), the Department of Tourism (DOT), together with its attached agency, the Intramuros Administration, will open the historic Walled City of Intramuros to the public for an entire week. This celebration aims to honor the modern-day heroes of the Philippines—those who have worked tirelessly abroad to support their families and contribute to the nation’s development. Throughout the week, various exhibitions, cultural events, and tribute ceremonies will be held within the iconic walls of Intramuros, highlighting the resilience, dedication, and patriotism of OFWs.

From May 25 to 31, 2026, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and returning migrant workers can enjoy complimentary access to two of Intramuros’ most renowned heritage sites — Fort Santiago, a historic Spanish fortress, and the Centro de Turismo Intramuros, a vibrant hub showcasing Filipino culture and history — as part of a special initiative designed to provide Filipino workers abroad with a heartfelt and memorable welcome home experience.

The week-long offering also features complimentary guided heritage tours, providing OFWs and their families or companions with an in-depth experience to reconnect with Philippine history, culture, and identity. Through immersive storytelling and detailed exploration within the historic district, participants gain a richer understanding of the nation’s past and cultural heritage.

“We want to acknowledge the immense hard work our OFWs perform every single day across the globe. Our goal is to express our gratitude by giving them the time to reconnect with their families and our culture. We want to evoke the nostalgia of the days when families routinely took the weekend to walk around Luneta Park, bringing back those cherished memories and offering a relaxed, meaningful space to bond right next door in the historic heart of Manila,” Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said in a statement.

The tourism chief stated that offering free access to Intramuros’ historic landmarks aims to honor OFWs for their sacrifices, promote family bonding, and deepen appreciation for Philippine culture and heritage among returning Filipinos and their loved ones.

Interested visitors can show their valid Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) and membership card from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. Each eligible OFW is allowed to bring up to four companions.

Across Luzon, preparations for Flores de Mayo are already underway, carried out by organizers, volunteers, small vendors, and riders who help move essentials on time.

MANILA, Philippines — Weeks before Flores de Mayo comes into full view, preparations are already underway in communities across Luzon.

Gowns are being fitted and refitted. Parasols, sashes, and decorations are being finished. Volunteers are confirming materials, schedules, and food for parish activities. Flowers are being ordered early because timing matters in the May heat. There is laughter in parish halls, too, the steady hum of old sewing machines, and the smell of food prepared a day ahead. 

What most people see in May is the celebration in full. What they do not always see is the busywork that carries it there: the follow-ups, errands, adjustments, and last-minute coordination that occur before the procession begins.

This is the part of Flores de Mayo that Lalamove Philippines is putting the spotlight on through Flores de LALA, a campaign that recognizes the organizers, volunteers, families, and small vendors whose work shapes the tradition long before the procession begins.

Flores de Mayo is a month-long Filipino Catholic tradition honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, often culminating in the Santacruzan procession. In parish after parish, in Metro Manila neighborhoods and in towns across Luzon, preparation begins weeks before the first offering. The hermano mayor or hermana mayor, often the lead sponsor helping steer the year’s celebration, starts working with organizers as early as April. By then, the work has usually moved from planning to coordination: sponsors checking what still needs funding, families confirming who will join, and organizers making sure every supplier, volunteer, and parish requirement is accounted for before May begins. 

In San Pedro, Laguna, the pressure of preparation is familiar to Evelyn, a Flores de LALA participant whose family has long been involved in Flores de Mayo celebrations. This year, the work also runs through their family flower shop, with flowers needed for the church, the images of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the carroza, and the hermana’s kubol. “Kaya kong mag-Dangwa nang hindi umaalis sa bahay,” Evelyn shared, describing how Lalamove helps them coordinate flower pickups from suppliers and bring supplies to their shop or preparation site on time. Similar coordination plays out in towns like Bocaue, Bulacan, where families book Lalamove sedans or trucks to send fundraising shirts and other supplies between cities in the lead-up to the celebration. 

Around that work, a small local economy begins to move. Seamstresses, florists, décor makers, merienda providers, sound-system suppliers, shirt printers, and other neighborhood vendors all become part of the season’s rhythm. Their work may not always be the most visible part of Flores de Mayo, but it is part of what makes the visible part possible.

Across Luzon, from Metro Manila neighborhoods to provinces outside Metro Manila, that preparation takes different shapes but follows a familiar rhythm. In dense urban areas, organizers may be coordinating pickups and drop-offs across several neighborhoods in a single day. In older city districts, flowers, fabric, finished gowns, and decorations often move between markets, home-based makers, and parish spaces. In nearby provinces, the distances may be longer, but the challenge stays the same: a long list of items that need to be somewhere else, on time.

The work shows up in the small things. A sagala’s gown returns from a last-minute alteration and must reach the organizer’s house before the next rehearsal. A batch of sampaguita arrives less fresh than expected, and a replacement order goes out the same day. A floral arch turns out too tall for the doorway and has to be adjusted, with more roses and santan sent in to finish it. A set of speakers is needed in another chapel before the band arrives. The merienda for the volunteers is ready, but it is still at the supplier’s kitchen an hour before practice.

The Errands Behind the Celebration 

A gown that arrives late pushes back a fitting. Flowers ordered too early wilt before the blessing. Flowers ordered too late will miss the procession. By the final week before the Santacruzan, most of the margin has already been used up, and the May heat does not grant extensions.

For Lalamove’s partner drivers, these errand chains have become part of the rhythm of the Flores de Mayo season. One afternoon can mean a gown pickup from a seamstress, a set of speakers for the parish band, a crate of décor for a parish hall, and a flower replenishment before a late rehearsal. Some items are light but urgent. Others are bulkier or more delicate. A beaded bodice cannot be folded. A crate of sampaguita cannot sit in the sun.

Different deliveries call for different vehicle options across the day, from motorcycles for urgent, sedan, MPVs, or big vans to L300, large aluminum trucks, and wing van s for décor, supplies, and other materials that need more space or careful handling. For suppliers and organizers coordinating beyond their own city or immediate community, Lalamove’s long-distance deliveries across Luzon help move materials from farther points without turning every errand into a full-day trip.

None of this replaces the work of the people on the ground. Lalamove only helps what they have already prepared arrive where it needs to be.

“Flores de Mayo is carried by the people who prepare for it: the organizers, the volunteers, the vendors, the families,” said Djon Nacario, Managing Director of Lalamove Philippines. “Our role is to support that work by making sure the essentials they have prepared arrive safely and on time, so the celebration can come together the way the community intended. That is the help we can offer, and we want to offer it well.” 

With many communities watching their budgets more closely, lead sponsors such as the hermano mayor or hermana mayor, along with parish organizers, and small vendors, are stretching resources further than they used to, deciding which is why Lalamove aims to make delivery services affordable, without compromising speed and safety. . But the work goes on. It has gone on for generations in communities across the country. There is excitement in it, too: a sagala seeing her gown for the first time, the band rehearsing under a streetlight, families gathering early just to watch the arch go up. 

The gowns are being sewn. The flowers are being ordered. The altar pieces are coming together. And by early May, the sagalas will be walking through their cues one more time, veils in hand, while the music starts to find its place.

At the heart of the launch festivities was a ceremonial cutting of a colossal Puto Biñan, a spectacle that drew large crowds and ignited awe and excitement among attendees, while also paying homage to one of the city’s most iconic delicacies and culinary symbols, renowned for its soft, fluffy texture and sweet, coconut-infused topping.

Taking place from May 16 to 23, the Puto Latik Festival offers a vibrant mix of experiences blending food, creativity, and community—encouraging visitors to rediscover traditional customs through lively and innovative events.

During the festivities, students, families, food lovers, and festivalgoers are invited to experience Biñan’s celebrations, which highlight not only its traditions but also the people who keep them alive and evolving. More than just an event, this celebration embodies the spirit of a community whose stories grow and change through culture, talent, and common experiences.

The festivities included the Interschool Flair Bartending Competition and Biñan’s Singing Idol, providing platforms for local talents to demonstrate their creativity and skills. The celebration continues with Biñan’s Finest: Family Soiree on May 23, which showcases local crafts and community services, emphasizing entrepreneurship and local pride, while honoring the people and communities that define Biñan.

Culinary Creativity

One of the celebration’s most anticipated events was the Puto Latik Cook-Off, which turned tradition into a springboard for creativity. More than just a culinary contest, it served as a demonstration of how familiar flavors can evolve with innovative ideas and fresh takes.

Participants reimagined Puto Biñan as innovative creations that showcased originality in flavor and presentation, illustrating the dish’s adaptability beyond its traditional form. The competition showcased not only the versatility of the dish but also the creativity and skill of the communities behind each entry—demonstrating that heritage can inspire innovation while still being firmly rooted in identity.

This year’s winning dishes showcased creativity in both their execution and flavor. Ranging from sweet reinterpretations to savory creations, they served as a reminder that traditions often evolve through those who reinvent them.

Preserving Biñan’s Story

The Puto Latik Festival has become a significant annual event in Biñan, celebrating two cultural icons central to the city’s identity: Puto Biñan and the Maglalatik. Initially held in February, the festival was rescheduled to May to align with the feast day of San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers—highlighting the city’s agricultural heritage and enduring customs.

At the heart of the celebration is Puto Biñan, the city’s iconic steamed rice cake traditionally topped with cheese or salted egg. It has long been viewed as a symbol of craftsmanship passed down through generations. The festival also honors the Maglalatik, a traditional folk dance performed with coconut shells that showcases movement, artistry, and Biñan’s rich cultural heritage, which still influences the city today.
