Ocassionally I like to bitch about how horribly ununderstandable and indecisive men are. I�??m often going north these days - in my head. As some of you might know I�??m trying to piece together a shambolic film production of a documentary about the concepts, stereotypes, feel, identities and changes in the perception (internal and external) of Northerners, that is English Northerners.

I won�??t put the whole outline here just yet. It requires a bit more work and thinking through. These things need incredible, unbelievable amount of research even though my point of view is that of a foreigner and I want to sustain a sort of fresh, naive approach. There are few questions that I want to ask: what is class and why is it spatially organized in this country? Who is working class? Why does Liverpool hate Manchester and the other way round? Why does everybody up North and nobody down South know what Gregg�??s is? I don�??t want to have any preconceptions as to what the answers are. But I still need to know what is it that I�??m asking about.

I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about Albert Dock and that nobody back where I came from, probably not even my mum, life long Beatles fan, knows what it is. This causes an urgent need to call home and ask: what do you call a Scouser in a shirt and a tie?*

Sometimes I find myself drifting away, stopping eating with the fork half way between my plate and my mouth, half-turning page of a book, partially opening a can of beer�?� because I�??m stuck boiling my brain thinking how on earth am I going to get hold of Jimmy McGovern?

All the time these days I�??m going. And I�??m almost there, I�??m almost north.

I got a call today from my beloved film institution to learn that my current tutor who was overlooking both of my projects is leaving to teach at Toronto Film School. I�??m not sure if this is official news, but I know he�??ll read this eventually.

He�??s been great help and showed amazingly encouraging interest in my ideas; probably single-handedly turned me from a free-floating slacker into a person fully determined to do my own thing. If this is not going to actually cause some harm to the documentary film heritage of humanity reminds to be seen. But it did evidently help me out if only by stuffing my throat with the likes of budget spreadsheets (a.k.a. budget spreadshits) and equipment checklists I thought I could get away without. It might seem like little inspiration but he knows I�??m not short on inspiration. It�??s the action I�??m not big on.

You�??re going to do it, he said, do it properly.

And you know that�??s what it comes down to - do it properly.

Well I hope these spoilt brats at Toronto Film School appreciate what they�??re getting.

Intellectual exercise of translation boils the brain under my scull. I�??m back to writing in Polish, have a column deadline on Thursday (which is why I�??m over at tumblr fiddling with my brain). I find swapping the languages an extreme sport when it comes to written word. If you�??re doing well you�??re in the element. If you break all your limbs you�??re just the twat who thought that full-pipe is a half pipe with a roof.

There is a reason for this procrastination however (yes, I came prepared). You see, silence in different languages most definitely has a different meaning. How are we ever going to get over the differences in meanings of spoken or written word? This has troubled me before. I�??m living in a house with northern English, South African-English and USA-born Greek brought up in Switzerland. I�??v been exchanging thoughts with people all over the shop via endless networking sites, instant messengers, emails. We all speak English and the fact that we all know it is the single reason while the whole enterprise is even possible. My question is: is English our common language or the lowest common denominator?
