To reduce the number of cars descending on the downtown area as people arrive for the festivities, the OVGC will set up a bike check service in the parking lot of the library at 111 E. Ojai Avenue. In offering the service, the Coalition hopes to encourage attendees to benefit the environment by pedaling to the event, rather than driving.
The great block party known as Ojai Day attracts more local participants than any other event in
the year. The valet bike parking service will be like a coat check for bicycles: bicycle riders will
be issued a claim check for their bikes, which will be guarded by Coalition members in a secure
“bike corral.” This means that the bicycles—as well as accessories such as helmets—will be safe from damage or theft.
This year Ojai Day will have a new “Go Green Ojai” area especially for environmentally minded
businesses, organizations, and agencies. After attendees leave their bicycles at the bike valet,
they can go over and say hello at the Ojai Valley Green Coalition booth in the “Go Green Ojai”
area.
The Green Coalition is committed to encouraging more bicycle riding in Ojai. Each person who
bicycles rather than driving to Ojai Day will have the satisfaction of knowing that they’re reducing carbon emissions in the valley.

Radio interview with Jim Thebaut Here

As long as water flows from the faucet, most Californians are unaware of the problems facing their own and six other states in the American Southwest, all of which rely heavily on water from the Colorado River. As populations grow in our cities, desert towns, and isolated rural communities, and as our region is challenged by ongoing drought, there is increasing pressure on our limited water supply.

Featuring aerial photography and high-quality graphics, the 71-minute documentary The American Southwest: Are We Running Dry? examines the water crisis and the need for conservation and watershed protection policies. The film will be shown by the Ojai Valley Green Coalition on Saturday, August 29, at 4:30 pm at the Ojai Theatre, for a $10 suggested donation. Besides the “big picture” of the growing humanitarian crisis around the world, it will convey to viewers the implications of diminishing water for our own community.
Veteran filmmaker Jim Thebaut wrote, produced, and directed the documentary. Originally released in 2005, the film is narrated by Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Seymour. Thebaut himself will be in Ojai to introduce the film and answer questions afterward.

25th annual Coastal Cleanup Day. That morning, valley residents will remove litter from various locations around the City of Ojai. Ojai volunteers are asked to sign in at 8:45 A.M. at the Rotary Community Park parking lot, at the intersection of Highway 33 and Highway 150 (also known as “the Y”) in Ojai.
The annual Coastal Cleanup Day will be taking place at more than 750 locations around the state, and will result in 1,100 miles of the California coastline as well as another 1,000 miles of inland shorelines being cleared of trash and debris by volunteers.

The Coastal Commission estimates that 60 to 80 percent of the debris on California beaches originates from inland and then washes out to the ocean. Last year more than 70,000 volunteers collected more than 1,600,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California’s beaches, lakes, and inland waterways.

Coastal Cleanup Day takes place every year on the third Saturday of September, is the nation’s premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment, and offers a way for students, neighbors, families, and service groups to join together, have fun, and show community support for the stewarding of shared natural resources.

Green Coalition to Partner with the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation on September 23.
On Wednesday, September 23, from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M., at the Chaparral High School Auditorium at 414 E. Ojai Avenue, the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation and Ojai Valley Green Coalition will join forces to help Ojai residents save money, energy, and the environment. The evening’s “Leave Your Mark” event will feature energy consultant Tim Broderick, a California Certified HERS Rater, Thermal Imaging Technician, and Energy Star Partner.
Broderick will speak about the small but important ways that people can make their homes more comfortable, healthful, and energy-efficient. “The tips I provide will help residents see how even the smallest energy measures can matter the most,” he explains.

The event will culminate months of hard work by a team of young people and adults in the Youth Foundation’s youth marketing agency, Generation Communications. The team has collected more than 900 paper leaves signed by Ojai Valley residents pledging to lower their energy use, and the leaves will be mounted on a large tree to be displayed throughout the evening.

The evening will include a drawing for an Energy Star television provided by Best Buy, as well as many other energy-efficient prizes provided by Ace Hardware in Meiners Oaks. Also, each attendee will receive an energy-efficient gift, and dessert treats from the kitchens of the Ojai Valley Green Coalition’s Culinary Club chefs will be served.

In cohosting the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation’s “Leave Your Mark” event, the Green Coalition continues its active efforts, begun in late 2006, to make the Ojai Valley a model green and sustainable community.

For further information on the event, visit www.OjaiValleyGreenCoalition.org, leave a message for the Coalition’s Executive Director, Deborah Pendrey, at (805) 653-8445, or call Bobbi Balderman, Program Director of Generation Communications for the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation, at (805) 640-9555.

October 28th, Chaparral Auditorium, 7pm. Flyer Here. The Ojai Valley Green Coalition is now three years old, and the group would like you to help them celebrate on Wednesday, October 28, from 7 to 8:30 P.M. at Chaparral Auditorium, 414 E. Ojai Avenue in Ojai. In addition to toasting the start of their fourth year with sparkling cider, they’ll be enjoying delicious organic cupcakes.
Bring your questions regarding our local environment, and your visions for Ojai’s sustainable future. You’ll meet the Coalition’s Board of Directors and get to hear a few words from each of the Committee Chairs. They’ll share with you where Ojai and the Coalition have been and invite you to make plans with them for where valley residents want to go next in the progress toward a green and sustainable Ojai. This will be the unveiling of the Coalition’s draft strategic plan and vision statement.

There is a new word to describe the notion of thinking globally and acting locally. That new word is “glocalization.” Attendees at the birthday celebration will see PowerPoint slides depicting various Coalition events, including the Waterway Clean-up, the Green Home Tour, and the Mad City Chickens documentary. An open-mic session will provide everyone with an opportunity to share their thoughts, and attendees will also be able to share their comments and feedback by use of a suggestion box.

Said Oak View resident Deborah Pendrey, who is Executive Director of the Coalition, “We’ve come a long way in three short years, but we still have a long way to go. Come be a part of the solution. Join us as we celebrate, take stock, and move forward toward greater sustainability here in the Ojai Valley!”

Come Help Reestablish a Functioning Wetland Ecosystem!
On the first three Saturdays in November, community members will begin a collaborative effort to return the Ojai Creek to its natural functioning state. The Watershed Committee of the Ojai Valley Green Coalition, under the leadership of conservation biologist Brian Holly, has already completed a site analysis, a habitat assessment, and a stream characterization study, and Eagle Scout candidate Vince Khougaz has helped organize a stream morphology survey.
The community is invited to participate in the next phase, which will be the actual restoration process. Beginning on Saturday, November 7, volunteers will gather for an opening ceremony, an initial training, and the subsequent removal of non-native species from the creek. This work day will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Libbey Park Gazebo in downtown Ojai. Wear sturdy shoes, long-sleeved shirts, and pants, and bring a snack and plenty of water. Feel free to bring your own loppers, rakes, or other tools. Some tools will be provided. There is very little poison oak in the park, and what there is will be marked off so that volunteers will not be exposed.

This creek restoration project is made possible by funding from the Earth Island Institute and by support from the Wetlands Recovery Project and the Coastal Conservancy of Southern California.
