VIM - My config

During the years I've been doing a very serious evaluation of Emacs and VIM to find out which one was the right one for me.
In the end VIM won. Why? Because I don't feel like learning 51236234 keyboard shortcuts.
I know most of you prefer Emacs since it seems to be quite popular these days but don't be angry at me it's just personal taste.
Anyway, let's get to my configs:

I cloned Mr. Lee Hinman's dotfiles from GitHub and they're really awesome by default.
Although, as you may know, I do not program in Clojure which is he's main language right now so I had to make a few changes for my C/C++, Ruby and Python needs.
The first thing I did was activate the C/C++ plugin, most of the libraries were there but the actual plugin was deactivated for some reason and I like to access all the pretty functions on my MacVIM menu bar.
Secondly, I added a plugin called Mini Buffer Explorer which makes your VIM treat buffers like tabs ( I don't really like buffers ) although, I use the default Cocoa tabs even more, ( with :tabfind, :tabopen... ) they're even handier.
Finally, I removed every single trace of Clojure.

I'm also trying to find a Mono/C# plugin for VIM because the one on the VIM site is really sucky, it doesn't even have good code completion tools.

I also want to highlight that Python has very nice support in the default VIM so I didn't really change it and the Ruby support on those dotfiles is great, especially if you're doing some Rails.

Yesterday I tweeted about an awesome game ( which happens to be free as well ) I found on TigSource ( indie games’ version of heaven ).
I couldn’t have managed to understand how and why the game was so awesome before I played it. It’s set on 1988 when the Internet started to appear and the it tells the story of an AI which is under attack by one of the 1st counter measures to virus that ever existed, the Reaper. The player will have to hack his way to the salvation of the Internet with his newly bought Amie Workbench version 1.3!
Still, the most relevant part is the story it self, of course, which I won’t tell you. Really, if I proceede this post I’ll ruin the game for your, so just go get it!

How To: Install Emacs23 on a MAC through MacPorts

People seem to like my How-To's so here's another.

This time we'll be installing the non-UI version of Emacs 23 on Snow Leopard through MacPorts.
Just as a side-note, Snow Leopard brings Emacs 22 installed by default but I prefer using the most recent software available, it's kind of a good practice, you know?
The process is quite simple, just write all of the following commands without the quotes ( "" ):

- Install MacPorts

- Enable the root account

- Go to Terminal.app ( just search "Terminal" in spotlight or quicksilver and it should do it )

- Type "su" and enter the password you choose in the second step

- Type "port install emacs" and wait for it to finish

- Type "open /etc/paths" and add "/opt/local/bin/emacs" to the list. Save the file ( by pressing CMD+S )

- Close Terminal.app and open it up again

Couldn't be easier right?

I hope that helped you to get started with Emacs, the OS which happens to bring a text editor!

How To: Xlink Kai on a MAC ( Xbox 360 )

Xbox Live is a very good online service. Most of the time you don't get lag in game and you have access to a variety of services like Games on Demand, Twitter, Facebook, Netflix and Last.fm.
There's only one huge problem... It's a monthly paid service.

And, as we all know, I don't like paying for stuff.

Some time ago I found a service called Xlink Kai which let's you play any game that supports System Link online with your friends. Although you should bare in mind that your ping must be below 30 to play, since I'm Portuguese that shouldn't be a problem but if you're from the USA you can only play with people from your state.
These are the steps you should follow to make Kai working:

- Register on Xlink Kai's website;

- Download and install Xlink Kai;

- Start Kai and go to "http://127.0.0.1:34522/" on your browser;

- Select your network adapter from the drop-down menu under Network Settings;

- Still under Network Settings, change your port to 30000 if not defaulted already;

- Enter your username and password on the Engine Settings;

- Create a static IP for your computer;

- Select your router from this list and follow the instructions;

- Start your Xbox 360 and run any game that supports System Link ( CoD:MW2, GoW, GoW2... );

- Select multiplayer/co-op and go to the System Link menu.

You should then see a bunch of servers in the list if you entered Kai's correct lobby.

HTC Touch - Get Hacked

This weekend was more productive than usual. I spent most of my time playing Mass Effect 2 and trying to hack my HTC Touch ( Elfin ).

First of all: Mass Effect 2. What a great game! I haven't played a game this good in years! The story is great, the characters are great and the gameplay is a typical 3rd person shooter with sci-fi powers ( which is also great ).

Anyway, to the stuff that matters. The hacking was not that hard. Although, you will require Windows at all cost, I tried it myself doing it on a VM but the Activesync connection was very weak.
The process involves:
- Finding your device info
- Backing up your current ROM and some ID's
- Hacking your CID
- Installing the cooked ROM

The tutorials from our friends at XDA-Developers will help you help you hacking the HTC Touch <--- ONLY!!!!!. For other models you'll have to search their forum, they have a huge variety of models and brands.

Since the WM 6.5 version is still in Beta I decided to install WM 6.1 which seems really stable.
The process worked at the 3rd time because I got stuck at the HaRET screen with the little, but familiar, penguin looking at me.
Onyx 4.9 as they call it is really good and it uses all the good features you would expect from an HTC product.
The only con I found until now is the battery drain. Even though it says that the 4.9 version is almost identical to the default ROM ( WM 6 ) the battery drains is a little bit faster, it can only take 2 days in use ( not really bad but still, bad ).

The next step would be trying to run some flavor of Linux in it. Maybe Android? With a bit of search you'll find that some people were able to run it with some bugs.

Hey guys! Haven't posted for a while and I apologize for that.
I have been spending time with my family.

Anyway, this is a very brief post. I just want to wish you a very happy new year with lots of learning, maths and hacks :)

School is about to start again and this is a very small period therefore I'll have the tests together which makes my life kinda hard.

But, I promise that I'll keep updating my blog with new content every month.

2010 will be a very rich year with Chrome OS's, a lot more 3D action on our living room ( even though it will be so expensive that almost no one will be able to get it ). iXtreme LT is also around the corner and I bet it'll be finished by the end of January. This version will be very cool and I believe that M$ will have a hard time trying to figure which consoles are hacked.

Besides all of that, I'm getting a Kindle with my Xmas money. What do you guys think of it? Is it good at handling .pdf's?

Chrome OS

So, today I decided to take a look at the developer build of Chrome OS that's coming next year around this time.
I ran it through VMWare Fusion with a VMWare ready image from LifeHacker ( yeah, the link leads you to the Pirate Bay but it's safe ) and I... think that it's not a big deal.
It's too early to say anything, the latest build it's missing some key features like bookmark syncing and a lot of the average user apps... which brings us too an interesting thing. The idea of the browser it self being the OS doesn't look right to me, many Linux developers keep saying that "Emacs is an OS, I wouldn't need to use X if I wanted to!" and I guess I'm ok with that, but a browser? No real text processors and no real software? Nah...
I guess that, eventually, I could get used to it but I wouldn't if I didn't need to.

Well, this is my opinion, what about you?

Games to Get and Banwaves to Avoid

So, has you probably eared, Microsoft banned a lot of hacked Xbox 360's. Most of my friends were all banned because they played some games before they came out which is not cool...
Anyway, this month will be very rich to us, the gaming community, lot's of great games are coming out so I decided to make a lil list on what to get:

- Assassins Creed 2: Altair is now history and Enzio is the new main character. The game looks and feels very, very good and complete.

- Modern Warfare 2: The game is good, it's the main reason people are getting banned from Xbox Live, it was leaked 2 weeks before the launch date. Even though it's awesome I think that the media dudes are giving it too much attention.

- James Cameron's Avatar: The movie will be awesome and so will the game ( I hope ). The developers are new to the business so they're probably have new and great ideas besides, it's going to be 3D!

- Dragon Age: Origins: This game already came out, I know, but if you have some spare money I think it deserves a try. It's a very rich MMO to be played on the PC ( you can try the console version but... whatever )

- Star Wars The Force Unleashed Sith Edition: If after buying all of those you still got some money.

And that's it. That's all I'm getting for November.

My Tools of Trade

I saw this post by Mike Gunderloy where he tells us what cool software a Rails developer uses, so I decided to make a list of my own. I guess I can be called an amateur developer because I can't really have a job yet and I do it just for my personal enjoyment.

Hardware

I don't have much to say in this part. I own an Apple iMac ( a newer version came out this week you might want to give it a look ) and an ASUS F3Jc ( which, I guess, is kinda old ). I also got an Xbox 360 and a PSP Fat. Besides those I also own:

- Extra RAM for the iMac ( 4 GB ) and the laptop ( 2 GB )
- Primary external hard drive is a Prestige Portable Hard Drive 500GB from IOMEGA
- Secondary hard drive is a 320GB Portable Hard Drive from IOMEGA as well.
- Apple Wireless Keyboard. This beauty is my main keyboard, it's small, functional and beautiful. I can handle pretty much any type of keyboard but I really like this one.
- A4Tech X7 is my mouse. I have it for 2 years. It was bought when I was an hardcore gamer because it had a triple click feature.

Both HDD's were really cheap and they haven't failed me.

Software

The list is not in any kind of order. I just added the ones common with Mr. Gunderloy and then my own apps.

- Safari - The program I use most. I spend most of my time on the internet but when I'm doing some web programming ( rarely ) I use Firefox for debugging.
- TextMate - I never used an IDE very much so this is what I like, it never disappointed me.
- Eclipse - When I'm doing some heavy Java stuff I feel more comfortable in using Eclipse than any other IDE or editor.
- NewsFire - I read many, many blogs and this is my RSS reader of choice. I used to have Vienna installed as well but I prefer this one.
- Mail - This is my primary mail reader. It's not very good but I find it light and functional. It also handles lots of e-mails really well, I never had slowdowns or any kind of crash. Besides, it's built in.
- Terminal - Linux in OS X just like in fairy tales. What else can I ask for?
- MarsEdit - This is what I use when blogging. The Blogger interface is very, very ugly and not functional at all on Safari. It is also ugly but really functional.
- Navicat - I do a fair amount of database configuration and this is what I use.
- GitX - The only native OS X GUI for git I've found. It works but I mostly use the terminal.
- Pixelmator - I avoid Photoshop because I don't have time to learn it os this little program is where I spend most of my design time.
- Cyberduck - There are a lot of FTP clients for MAC, this is just one of them.
- Evernote - Where I drop most of my fixed notes. I guess I use it as a final destination for notes.
- Notational Velocity - Here is where the heavy note duty happens. I drop every bit of information I want to keep in here and organize it, if I think that the note will be useful later I send it to Evernote and give it nice formatting.
- Balsamiq Mockups - When I feel like doing mockups instead of just taking notes this is what I use.
- SQLite Manager - SQLite databases are a big deal these days. This GUI is not great but it works.
- Quicksilver - The most crucial app on my system. I use it to launch apps, move files, mail files, etc.
- Skype - For PC-to-PC voice communication.
- Adium - For MSN. MSN is the service we mostly use chatting in Portugal, I think it sucks :X
- LimeChat - For IRC. There are only a few IRC clients for MAC and this is my favourite.
- DropBox - What I use to host my files.
- Tinderbox - Yet another note taking application but this one is mostly for diagrams. It's SO UGLY but it works really, really well.
- VMWare Fusion - There are still some apps I miss from "gud ol" Windows like Visual Studio so I give the virtualization job to the VMWare folks.
- WhatPulse - This is one just for fun. I like to keep track of how many keys I press on some kind of project.
- Twitter - Not really a website but one of the websites I use most.

Python Books

So this weekend I decided to take a look at some Python books that I found and there are two that I'd like to recommend.

Python is a very easy, useful and productive programming language, most of the big fat enterprises ( like Google and Yahoo ) are using it as a server side scripting language and some has standalone programs ( not so many though ). You can use DJango to make nice websites, Twisted for some nice network programming and Tornado Web Server, the FriendFeed engine, that became open-source when Facebook bought it.

First, I would like to tell you about "O'REILLY's Learning Python". This books is simply great! I have some experience with Python but this book amazed me, you can easily pick it up as a complete noob and if you're experienced programmer you can skip a few chapters and you'll find some interesting stuff that you might not know. The book is quite large ( 1214 pages, the 4th edition ) but you can skip a few parts that are not that interesting.

Second, "Dive Into Python", a free e-book. If you check the website you'll see that it says "for experienced programmers" although I do not really agree with this statements. There are some parts that are really hard to understand and some that are just basic. You should have a programming past to read the book for easily comprehension though ( but you don't need to be a suppa L337 pro ).

These books are really good, they're very well written and they're easily understandable ( from a language/grammar point of view, and I'm a 14 year old Portuguese! ).

My next task would probably be learning Erlang because I'm quite fascinated with CouchDB and the language it self seems interesting, I'm not sure though, might also try some Java ( I know it's pretty much dead.... )

Well, I think every single blog I've read has a nice contest in the middle of all the other posts about random stuff and this one, is no exception!

You've probably already heard of a little game called Heroes of Newerth from the creators of Savage 2, S2 Games. They've made this new game that plays and feels the same as an old Warcraft III mode called Defense of the Ancients. The game has a large learning curve but after some matches you'll feel like you've been playing it for some decades. Oh and I forgot to tell you it's available for all platforms: MAC, Linux and Windows

Filttr - Twitter Filter

If you follow me on Twitter you'll probably know that I have a lot of followers ( 4000+ ) and you also probably know that's sh*t compared to other people that have millions and millions of followers.

Anyway, having a lot of followers is good but I think that if people follow me I should return them the favor and follow them back. So, yeah, I'm following 4000+ people!

But Twitter is supposed to be useful and not just a big fat piece of spam ( I bet you 5 euros that it will probably turn into one in the following years ) so that is why I like to filter my tweets to see only the ones that matter to me. Of course you could just search for @iphone or @mac but I don't really like that because some of those tweets might not interest me.

So, I use Filttr! This tool allows you to create an alias ( more like a group ) and then add the people you want to receive tweets from.

This tool is still in Beta and it's very slow, it has a few bugs and it takes a lot of memory and processing power because the page is very heavy ( for a webpage! duh! ).

Some other nice features include the conversation view, like Tweetie where you see the original tweet and the the replies, integration with IM and e-mail. It also had it's own client but they removed it because of bugs with the most recent twitter API.

By the time I made this post the login and registration system were down for some reason and they'll probably keep it down for some time, I hope they're actually doing something. That means you'll have to use OpenID.

NOTE: Jeez, Safari still works very bad with blogger! At least now I can check the blog scheme without crashing everything. Does google hate webkit?! Oh wait... they use it for Chrome, nevermind.

Snow Leopard and other useless stuff

Probably today or tomorrow I'll be sitting on my iMac running Snow Leopard, not a simple Leopard or a Tiger, a Snow Leopard! RAWR!

You might be asking yourself why they didn't come up with a new and more original name but it's actually pretty simple.
This is more like an update for Leopard, it brings lots of awesome new features like Quicktime X, support for 64 bit ( doesn't really matter to me ), OpenCL, which I'm particularly interested in, it's faster and it takes up less space on the hardrive. Besides those it looks the same, feels the same, works the same way and smells the same.
I believe it's actually a big step for Apple not changing the UI every single in every single version they make. It's still pretty though.
I don't see a big deal in this new version but I'll surely upgrade. I just hope that all my apps work well.
There are already some compatibility issues but I'm sure they'll be solved in the weeks following.

So for me it's not such a big deal like Windows 7 mostly because Leopard and Tiger were already very good and Windows Vista sucked "disks" a lot, it was a slow and terrifying experience making me install Linux on my laptop.

Besides all of those things, I got a new Wireless Apple Keyboard today ( thanks Mom n Dad! ) and I love it! I'm still getting used to it because somehow the keys seem to be in different places so don't be shocked if you see a misspell.

I'm still intrigued about Backtrack 4, first came the beta a few weeks later the pre-release and I have no idea when the final build will be released but I'm looking forward to it.

Quake Live

It has been a while since I made a post. I'm too lazy to keep my stuff updated and there's not been much for me to write about. Besides, I've been very entertained with my xbox 360 and I have a lot of games now ( you can check in an early post why ) you can see them in MyGamerCard Profile which is also a very nice website.

Anyway, Quake Live came out 2 days ago for MAC and Linux and I have registered as soon as I knew. I registered under the name of TiLeNpWneD and I suck badly, very badly. The Windows version was already around for a while

Overall, there's not much to say, it's just a free and fresh version of the classic Quake. It was not one of my favorite games but just the idea of going to a website and fire up a match of Quake that looks exactly like the original makes me very happy.

The MAC version is still very, very buggy. Sometimes the website doesn't load correctly, other times it doesn't load at all, when you quit a match in full screen the game has the tendency to crash Safari, the mouse sensitivity is wacky and don't even try playing with the Mighty Mouse ( we already knew that anyway ).

The gameplay and experience are exactly the same ( as I said before ) with everyone doing bunny hops and getting stupidly awesome frags and getting fragged as well. It's not good at all for newcomers but that was not the population they were aiming at anyway.

What can I say? It's just Quake but free as in beer.
Just go play it!

OFF THE RECORD: The bunny hop thing that everyone does it's a very old bug that hasn't been corrected ( purposely? ). By jumping and strafing left or right and turning the mouse in the way you want to go will bug OpenGL making you move and jump faster giving you an advantage over the opponent... they will do it as well... so no big advantage...

Savage 2

I recently discovered a stream on Justin.tv which streams a game called Savage 2. I've had contact with the game many time ago when it came on a gaming magazine that I buy every month but at the time the game had a monthly fee and I hate to pay monthly fees so I just played a bit and then uninstalled the game.
The game is a mix of FPS, RPG, RTS and third person fighting, you can find more about it in the website.

When I was on the stream one of the producers told me that the game was no longer monthly paid and it was now 100% free ( you can get a prime account to have some extra feature but they're not necessary at all to experience the game at it's best ). So, of course I had to try it... again.
I liked the game a lot and now I play it a while every single day to improve my score and level, I may even get a prime account, eventually...

Anyway, I was in the Savage 2 Forums and a post named "Savage 2 Community Involvement Program 2.0!!!" called my attention and I decided to give it a look.
They were "hiring" players to do some community service to improve the game and the website like map development, graphic design, web design, customer support and translations.

Of course I had to apply for the translations!!!!!!
And now I'm to translate the website/game to Portuguese and then provide support to portuguese people and I will, maybe, organize tournaments and events.
Now I am in Skype in their chat room discussing and giving ideas and also just having some fun!

I believe this game has future, mainly because it's free. Give it a shot, you'll may like it!

Show GIT branch on the Terminal

I ( like many people ) don't like the default themes on the MAC terminal and I don't have the time or skill to make a new shell code to make a nice colored theme.
Then I remembered that in some videos I've seen that the developers have a nice red and blue theme that also shows the GIT branch that you're in, which is pretty awesome.

I eventually found it here ( thank you to the developer for making it ) and the code is the following:

You just have to edit .bash_profile in your home folder and paste that code in any part of the file ( don't delete the other text there!!!! ).

The theme is very nice and it even has a clock and a nice dollar sign for "waiting for command" ( did that make sense? ) and I said before I love the colors.

Hack or not to hack, that is the question...

I decided to buy an X360 for 2 reasons:
- Because of the exclusive games that it has ( like Halo and Gears of War )
- Because it can be hacked to run backups

As you probably know, there isn't a good and safe way to flash the PS3, yet. But there is a very easy, good and safe way to flash ( or hack ) the Xbox 360 and it's hard to resist not doing it with so many games coming out at very, very high prices and ,of course, the global crisis.

The process consists in changing the cd/dvd driver's flash key ( in my case it's a Lite-On driver ) in a way that it allows you to run game backups and not only originals.
After that's done you have to scan the games that you have before burning them into the dvd to see if they possess a stealth plugin to blind Microsoft eyes :) and there are programs that do that.
There are also another important things but we'll stop here.

I said that the process is easy, and it is, but it involves much patient and you have to be very careful not to ruin your Xbox that's why I'm not going to do it, I'll pay someone to do it ( I look like a mob talking ).

Anyway, this is not a tutorial and if you think that I'm giving away illegal information go ahead and sew me :D
Just Google it, there are lot's of posts about this.

I need to get ideas to make blog posts. Not much time to make them though.

It has been around for some days on the web and everyone is making fun of Microsoft.
What? This of course!

Sure IE8 is better than IE7 but better than Chrome or Firefox? You're saying that wtf engine is better than Webkit? Oh God...
But my favorite parts are:

So IE8 comes with a suppa duppa spida-man developing tool and Firebug is just a peace of garbage?

Yeah, you bet you fat ass that Firebox wins ( not "may win", it wins ). Sure, IE8 comes with AdBlock lots of themes and huge amounts of download managers... That's just... sad.
And I don't know how Microsoft can say this after admitting that creating addons for IE8 is quite difficult unless you use Microsoft's technologies which many people dislike.

I prefer to look at this version that I've found at Webmonkey, I believe that it's more reliable...

Microsoft, your OS is quite good,( not Vista! Vista sucks baullz ) your console is good and some of your software is really nice ( like Visual Studio and Office ) but IE will suck forever unless you stop saying that you're the best and start doing some real work in it.

This post was not that good because everything I have to say about Microsoft's browser involves hard swearing...

Haven't had much time to do a post or any topic to talk about, but I've decided to talk about this little service that I've found accidently and which I find quite interesting.

It's called Posterous and it's the easiest way to get a blog!

1. First... don't sign up. There is no need for you to do so because all the post and configuration are e-mail oriented.

2. Email your post to post@posterous.com attach photos, video...

3. Check your new blog. The URL would be yourname.posterous.com, you can edit it later if you don't like it.

And that's the easy it gets. You'll then have more advanced configuration like tags ( if you call that advanced... ) and you can also add contributors.
Oh, you'll also get a profile page that you can edit.

Quite fun, have to create one for my own... I just need to get something to write in it! Have any suggestion? Leave a comment!

Fixing Safari 4 Encoding Issue

I've been using Firefox on my MAC since Safari 4 Beta came out. Why?
Because it had an encoding issue that pissed me off ( really ).

When I went to some website sometimes the text appeared all stupid and with very strange characters, I tried to change the text encoding to all the possibilities, but nothing.
I made some debugging and found out that in the source code the text appeared correctly and when I copied and pasted the strange text to any editor it appeared correctly as well so it got to be a Safari issue.
Yesterday, the non-beta version of Safari 4 came out ( with the classic tabs again, I really prefer them! ) and I had hopes that they've had fixed the issue but... they haven't.

So what? If Apple didn't fix the issue, it had to be a problem of my own and not a general problem.
I made some search and finally found something that turned out to be useful, here's what to do:

1 - Close Safari 4

2 - Go to Home/Library/Preferences and search for com.apple.Safari.plist

3 - Delete that file

4 - Open Safari 4

Your preferences should have disappeared but now you should see the websites with the strange encoding fine.

It worked for me. Hope it works for you as well!

Programming Languages - Survey

Should I Learn Coldfusion?

I especially liked @coldfumonkeh's reply because that website is realy good, the coldfusion tutorial worked great, and it has many, many other tutorials which are also very good!

So, yeah, I'm going to start learning Coldfusion just for fun, I may apply it on real apps if I like it which I think I'll do ( Adobe has never let me down! )

Oh and, this "reply-taking" feature that I created to import the replies to the posts is pretty old, have to create a new one that also imports the avatar and such.
