Thoughts on next steps for flyttillondon</h1> <article> <h1>Thoughts on next steps for flyttillondon</h1> <p>Thu, 04 Aug 2011 00:00:00 GMT</p> <p>I did launch <a href="http://www.flyttillondon.dk" title="flyttillondon.dk">flyttillondon.dk</a> as a side project to share all my good and not quite that good experiences with moving from Denmark to London. The target audience is Danish speaking people going to move or wondering if the benefits are greater than the pains. I will try to get through the practical stuff with bank account and social security, but also touch upon some of the more emotional aspects of moving away from everything. Enough about the actual content, if you understand Danish head over to the site.</p> <p>Surely, the purpose of the website is not just to deliver free content to the world. Everyone have to eat. Well, that's not my problem, but who couldn't use some extra bucks to sweeten their lives. So there it is, that's the motivation. Monetization is an important part of every project. It could be considered irrelevant, but at least you considered it.</p> <p>Passive income is huge in Denmark at the moment. The concept of creating content on the web to generate a passive revenue stream has been trending for a long time. Denmark is some months behind the trend curve in USA. <a href="http://www.flyttillondon.dk" title="Flyttillondon.dk">Flyttillondon.dk</a> is following this curve. I have gained some unique insights into the moving process and getting started. Exactly unique insights are key for the passive income - or a unique angle to a certain area. But these points isn't exactly what I intended to write about.</p> <p>Flyttillondon.dk is based on a three-level subscription model. First level is free for everyone and is an apetiser for anonymous users. Second level is free for registrered users, and includes a more extensive bit of content. Third level is for paid users, this level includes downloads of standard documents/templates and the last crucial parts of the unique data available. The idea behind this model is of course to move users from anonymous users to registered and finally paid.</p> <p>The website has only been live for two months now, and I don't think it has reached its full potential yet. So I'm wondering what to do next in order to make the best of the next two.</p> <p>Last week, I did add social media share buttons in order to allow users to spread the word easily. I didn't plan to use any money on marketing, so I rely fully on word-of-mouth and social media. So organic growth of content in order to gain a better search engine position is important, because I would try to avoid anything like adwords.</p> <p>Returning to the subject. I'm not completely sure that the format is the best for this kind of site. However, it need some more time before I can say that for certain. I have seen other websites putting flow of emails to good use. The idea behind is that people sign up for an email with 5 free tips for xxxx and afterwards you keep emailing the customer teasing with more free content and gradually introducing a paid product with a more complete content package. Initially, this was my goal, but I had a hard time transformning the content to a flow suited for emailing over time. I didn't have the time to write a complete ebook as the final paid product as well as the flow leading up to the product. I needed a way where I could built the content gradually and start gaining search engine awareness and hopefully some users early on. As the content getting more complete, I might change strategy or add an additional flow to the product.</p> <p>The complete website is build as a custom .NET MVC application. This allows me to limit the content on each page with great precision, but it makes it a bit more complicated to suddently update a page or write a paragraph whenever I'm in the mood. After having customized and completed two Umbraco sites over the last couple of weeks, I strongly consider moving to that platform only based on the fact that it might be easier to update. I will have to do some serious customer usercontrol development, but it might pay off in the end.</p> <p>This post ended up being a lot longer than expected, but hopefully it may inspire someone to try out that trend of passive income.
