The Ukrainian Catholic Church Choir of St Volodymyr from Canberra will be in Brisbane on Sunday 19 May 2013 at 9:30 am at the Ukrainian Catholic Church, 36 Broadway Street, Woolloongabba, Queensland to sing the Liturgy.

VIPS SUPPORTING UKRAINIAN AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FESTIVAL

Elected officials and other community VIPs are strongly supporting the National Festival of Ukrainian Australians to be held in Sydney from June 7 to June 9, 2013.

Those attending the Concert program at Sydney Town Hall on the afternoon of June 9^th include: senior representatives of political parties; Federal, NSW, and local Government, and; a range of fellow ethnic communities. With more RSVPs still rolling in, they currently include:

The fifth International Ukrainian Football Tournament (IUFT) will be held from June 30 to July 6 2013, in the state of New York, USA.  Taking part in the competition will be a team from Australia.

МАРІЧКА ГАЛАБУРДА – ЧИГРИН

ВЕЛИКДЕНЬ В CІДНЕЇ

Божественні Великодні відправи в українських церквах Cіднею відбулися в суботу 4- го травня 2013 року.

В українській греко-католицькій церкві св. Андрія в Лідкомбі, біля плащениці від її виносу в п’ятницю 3.5. члени Спілки Української Молоді, навіть наймолодші, тримали почесну варту біля гробу Божого. Приємно було побачити дуже багато  людей, а зокрема дітей у і біля церкви.

Святу Богослужби відправляли о. парох Симон Цькуй, о. Олег Стефанишин та о. Михайло Шиян. Пречудесно співав церковний хор під дириґентурою Василя Опришка.

Посвячення пасок, і ранком і вечером зокрема для дітей є радісною подією, хтось з їх це вперше бачив, переживав, а хто вже кілька разів.

Цьогорічний Великдень був також велично відзначений у Храмі Cвято-Покровської Парафія УАПЦ в Гомбуші.

Винос плащениці був зворушливий, бо несли її молоді прислужники, між ними такі, для кого це було вперше.

Посвячення пасок і тут відбувся в день, о 2-ій години по -обіді а о год.12 ночі о. Михайло Смолинець відправив Воскресну  Утреню і Великодну Літургію. Співав церковний хор під дириґентурою Лариси Ковальчук.

В неділю 5.5. зранку відбулася Великодна Богослужба в Св. Афанасійській Парафії УАПЦ в Ґренвілі…

Можна сміло твердити, що українці Сіднеї всіх Парафій велично і побожно відсвяткували Великдень.

Marie Ficarra MLC, has moved a Notice of Motion in the NSW Parliament in support of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisation’s Statement on Multiculturalism. AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION OF UKRAINIAN ORGANISATIONS

Motion by the Hon. MARIE FICARRA agreed to:

1. That this House notes that:

(a) the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO), the national umbrella body for the Ukrainian Australian community, strongly supports the principles of multiculturalism as enshrined in policy and legislation and had issued a Statement on Multiculturalism,

(b) the AFUO believes that Australia’s successful model of diversity is an example to the world of many faiths, cultures and languages contributing to Australia’s national strength, and

(c) in February 2013, the AFUO ratified the following Statement on Multiculturalism:
“That the AFUO contributes to Australia’s successful diversity and upholds the principles of multiculturalism by:

(i) Acknowledging and respecting Australia’s unique history, social and cultural norms, the rule of law, democratic conventions, and pluralistic make-up,

(ii) Respecting our shared values as Australian citizens at the same time that we preserve our Ukrainian heritage in an Australian context,

(iii) Sharing Ukrainian religious, cultural traditions and language with our fellow Australians regardless of their race, religion, language, cultural background or political preference,

(iv) Demonstrating strong respect for the cultural traditions that other ethnic communities contribute to the diversity of Australia,

(v) Extending the hand of Australian mateship to other culturally, linguistically and religiously diverse communities,

(vi) Ensuring that Ukrainian community engagement with both government and non-government institutions that promote multiculturalism, such as Commissions, Ethnic Communities’ Councils,

(vii) Contributing to the further development of policy and legislation that is relevant to multiculturalism, and

(viii) Providing guidance when requested to emerging culturally, linguistically and religiously diverse communities as they take part in the migration, settlement and community development experience.”

2. That this House acknowledges the AFUO’s Statement on Multiculturalism and commends the AFUO for its efforts in promoting multiculturalism, diversity and tolerance in Australian society.

European Court of Human Rights regarding Yulia Tymoshenko

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg, France, on Tuesday 30^th April 2013 made a number of determinations regarding the arrest and imprisonment of Yulia Tymoshenko, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine, on charges of exceeding her powers.

The court unanimously ruled that there were violations of Articles 5 and 18 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The ECHR called her pre-trial detention “arbitrary and unlawful” and said it was “for other reasons” than those permitted by law.  The court also said she had been deprived of the right to challenge her detention and had not been given an opportunity to seek compensation for unlawful deprivation of liberty.

Both the European Union and the United States have criticised Tymoshenko’s arrest and imprisonment as “politically motivated” and “selective justice.”  In addition the European Union has referred to Tymoshenko’s treatment as a major obstacle to progress on a free trade and political association agreement.

Call to Action

As a consequence of the determination by the European Court of Human Rights, the Australian Federation of Australian Organisations (AFUO) has called upon its member organisations to act in this matter by writing to Members of Parliament.
