Tucked among a forest of white birch trees in the heart of Alaska, this custom prefab house is one of our favourite projects that we helped create. It is a home that manages to feel both rugged and refined at the same time.

For anyone considering a custom home, cabin or cottage in Alaska, the challenges are real. The short build season, the logistics of getting materials to remote locations, and the need for a structure that can handle genuine winters all make prefabricated construction a natural fit. Our panelized building system is engineered and packaged at our facility on Vancouver Island, then shipped to site ready for efficient assembly. This means more of the work happens in a controlled environment, and far less is left to the uncertainties of Alaskan weather. In the building offseason, while the snow is still falling, our team can be designing and preparing your home package to be ready for the summer.

On the outside, this home makes a bold first impression. Clad in blue-grey horizontal lap siding with a standing seam metal roof, the contemporary profile is anchored by a warm cedar post at the entry and a generous deck with cable railing. This detail that keeps the views of the surrounding birch forest completely unobstructed. A second structure sits nearby on the property, giving the owners the kind of flexibility that rural Alaskan living often calls for. The overall look is unmistakably modern without feeling out of place in the wilderness, which is exactly the balance our clients were looking for when they first reached out to us.

Step inside and the vaulted ceilings of the open-concept main floor make an immediate statement. The great room, kitchen, and dining area flow together naturally, anchored by a freestanding wood stove that earns its keep the moment the temperature drops. A wall of large sliding glass doors opens directly onto the deck, pulling the birch forest right into the everyday experience of the home. The kitchen is finished with slate grey shaker cabinetry, a large quartz island with a double undermount sink, and matte black fixtures throughout. These design choices result in a home that is clean, durable, and built to handle real family life in a way that still looks sharp.

The floorplan’s main level is largely devoted to its spacious living area, comprised of the great room, kitchen, and dining room. Just adjacent is the primary suite, with accompanying walk-in-closet and private bathroom, complete with his-and-hers sinks and a sizable soaking tub. The floor also has a mud room, connected to the two car garage, an eye catching foyer, and a second bathroom. Making the space feel even larger is its seamless connection to the raised deck outside. These two connected spaces combine to create the perfect space for spending time with friends and family throughout every Alaskan season.

The home’s basement level provides even more living space for family to spend time together. One wing of the floor is where two spacious bedrooms are found, with a shared bathroom located between them. The opposite wing is dedicated to a games room, the laundry room, a storage and mechanical room, and the home’s fourth bathroom. In the center of the floor, a giant recreation room is found. One unique aspect of this room is a corner that is dedicated to a climbing wall. In total, this floor is any kid’s dream, while also providing some practical space for everyday living.

Some of the best custom homes in BC start not with a blueprint, but with a conversation. That was the case here, the homeowners arrived with a clear architectural vision already formed, one rooted in natural materials, honest craftsmanship, and a deep respect for the land the home would sit on. The result is a reclaimed wood home that feels entirely of its place with weathered board-and-batten siding, a standing-seam metal roof and natural stone scattered through the landscape.

A Home That Belongs to Its Land

There’s a particular kind of architecture that doesn’t announce itself, it simply settles into its surroundings as though it was always meant to be there. This project, tucked into the forested landscape of British Columbia, is exactly that. Clad in weathered reclaimed wood and topped with a standing-seam metal roof, the home blends into its surroundings perfectly, feeling like a natural piece of the property.

This build began the way our favourite projects do, with homeowners who already had a strong vision. They came to us with a clear sense of the architecture they wanted, and our design team worked closely with them to refine and realize it. The result is a home that feels deeply personal, because it is.

A Carefully Curated Layout

The main floor is laid out as a single-level, open-concept design that makes excellent use of its footprint. The living room anchors the left side of the home, featuring vaulted ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace with dedicated wood storage. It serves as a natural gathering space that flows directly into the central dining area. The kitchen occupies the right wing with its own vaulted ceiling, and is well-appointed with ample counter space, a dishwasher, and a high counter peninsula that bridges the transition between cooking and dining. A dedicated laundry room sits tucked at the back of the home alongside a full bathroom with flat shower, keeping the utility spaces discreet and functional.

The two bedrooms are positioned at opposite ends of the home, offering a comfortable separation that works well for guests or a home office arrangement. The primary bedroom wing includes a full ensuite with a tub/shower combination and skylight, while a second skylight in the central corridor keeps the interior hallway bright throughout the day. The overall layout is thoughtfully compact without feeling constrained, with vaulted ceilings throughout the main living spaces giving the home a sense of openness well beyond its square footage.

Craftsmanship That Shows Up in the Details

For those searching for custom homes in BC that go beyond the standard catalogue, this build is a useful reference point. The exterior palette of silver-grey reclaimed wood, dark standing-seam metal, and natural stone boulders used as landscape features rather than decoration was driven by both the site and the homeowners’ vision. A covered front deck runs the width of the home and serves as a seamless transition between inside and out.

Step inside and the quality of the build becomes immediately clear. Wide-plank hardwood floors run throughout, anchoring an open-concept main living area with soaring vaulted ceilings. The home has genuine warmth with stained glass interior doors, a wood-burning stove at the heart of the living room, and a bathroom finished in honed slate tile with custom woodwork details throughout. The kitchen features clean-lined maple cabinetry with slate countertops and stainless appliances. The result is a living space that is functional and refined without feeling cold. Black-framed windows bring the forest inside from every room, including the primary bedroom where treetop views frame the space on three sides.

Some properties have a way of stopping you mid-breath. This custom prefab home on the shores of a pristine Alaskan lake is one of them. Designed and built by Pacific Homes, this project is a testament to what’s possible when thoughtful architecture meets one of the most spectacular natural settings on earth with panoramic lake views, and forested hillsides. It provides the kind of quiet that reminds you why people fall in love with Alaska in the first place.

For clients dreaming of a custom cabin or cottage in Alaska, this project captures everything that’s possible with a prefab build: precision craftsmanship, high-end finishes, and a design that feels rooted in its landscape rather than dropped onto it.

The exterior speaks the language of the land with its warm cedar vertical cladding, a bold standing-seam metal roof, and oversized black-framed windows that frame the mountains and lake like living artwork. From the sprawling wraparound deck, the transition between indoors and out dissolves entirely. Whether you’re watching the morning mist lift off the water or entertaining under the midnight sun, this home was designed to keep you connected to the Alaskan wilderness at every turn.

Inside, the design philosophy carries through without interruption. Soaring vaulted ceilings with tongue-and-groove wood panelling, wide-plank hardwood floors, and a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows in the great room create a bright, airy living space that feels open and expansive year-round. A wood-burning stove anchors the room with the warmth every Alaskan home deserves.

The kitchen is a standout — custom wood cabinetry in a rich honey tone pairs with stone countertops and a statement navy island topped with a waterfall quartz surface. Three dramatic pendant lights hang above the island, casting a warm glow over a space that’s equally suited to quiet mornings and dinner parties. Sliding glass doors open directly to the deck, making this a kitchen that truly blurs the line between cooking and living outdoors.

The primary bedroom carries the same design sensibility: high ceilings, black-framed French doors opening to the deck, and direct lake views that greet you the moment you wake up. Being able to start each day in such a magical way was a focus for these homeowners throughout the design process. They wanted a layout that perfectly fit their property and the vision for their dream home.

The floor plan has all of its 1,550 square feet of living space spread across a single floor. The floor includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms, laid out in an intelligent way that makes the entire build feel even bigger than it is. One wing of the home is dedicated to the primary suite. Beyond its incredible view, the suite also boasts a giant walk-in closet and a luxurious en suite bathroom. Furthest from the lakefront is where the second and third bedrooms are found, as well as the second bathroom that they share on the opposite end of a hallway.

The opposite wing of the living space is where you can find the foyer, kitchen and dining room. They open up to the home’s true star, the spacious great room with its high ceilings and expansive windows. Further adding to this impressive area is how it seamlessly connects to the home’s 1139 square foot deck. Together, these living spaces create the perfect environment to enjoy living lakeside, allowing homeowners to cuddle up around the fireplace in the winters, and enjoy indoor-outdoor living throughout the summers.

Your home should adapt to your needs throughout every stage of life. At Pacific Homes, we specialize in accessible housing design that allows you to enjoy your dream home for decades to come. What makes us different from other prefab builders is that we can incorporate any detail you need into our home packages. Whether you’re planning for the future or need specific accessibility features today, our expert design team will create a beautiful, functional space tailored to your unique lifestyle.

Why Plan for Aging in Place?

Designing with accessibility in mind from the start is practical and will save you a lot of headaches in the future. Aging in place means maintaining your independence, staying in the community you love, and avoiding costly modifications down the road. Our approach to universal design homes creates spaces that are beautiful, modern, and accessible for everyone, regardless of age or mobility.

Smart Home Layouts for Lifelong Living

THE MAIN FLOOR “RANCHER” APPROACH

When looking to create the most effective aging in place home plans, people will often go with “functional rancher” designs. This foundational strategy is particularly valuable on sloping lots and can shape how your entire home functions. The key features of this approach are:

All essential living spaces (primary bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living areas, and laundry) are positioned on a single, accessible main floor

Additional levels are above or below for guest rooms, hobby spaces, or storage; spaces you can enjoy but don’t need to access daily

This building design allows for a home that functions perfectly as a one-level residence while still offering the square footage and flexibility of a larger home

They ensure that even if stairs become challenging, your everyday life continues without compromise

This age in place house plan strategy means you’re never isolated from the spaces that matter most, and guests can enjoy their own separate areas without impacting your daily accessibility. Even on challenging terrain, thoughtful design allows the main floor to operate as a complete, self-contained living space.

HOME ELEVATORS: LUXURY MEETS FUNCTION

For larger homes or those on lots where single-level living isn’t practical, home elevator installation provides an elegant solution. Modern residential elevators are:

Surprisingly affordable when installed during initial construction

Compact and attractive, designed to complement your home’s aesthetic

Easy to operate with simple controls

A valuable investment that increases home value and marketability

An option even in modest-sized homes—many models require less space than a small closet

Alternatively, planning for future stairlift installation by ensuring adequate stairway width and reinforced mounting areas gives you flexibility as needs change.

Essential Aging in Place Features for Enhanced Mobility

DOORWAYS AND HALLWAYS: CREATING FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT

One of the most critical aspects of senior friendly home design is ensuring adequate space for easy navigation. As we age, mobility changes. Our aging in place house design incorporates:

Wider doorways (minimum 36 inches) throughout the home, providing comfortable passage and eliminating that pinched, cramped feeling

Spacious hallways (at least 42-48 inches wide) that feel open and generous while allowing room for mobility aids

Lever-style door handles instead of knobs, which are easier to operate for those with arthritis or limited hand strength

Lower thresholds or flush transitions between rooms to prevent tripping hazards

BATHROOM DESIGN FOR SAFETY AND COMFORT

The bathroom is often the most challenging room to navigate safely as we age. Thoughtful aging in place bathroom design focuses on preventing falls and making daily routines easier:

Walk in showers for seniors with low or no-step entry, eliminating dangerous thresholds

Curbless showers that flow seamlessly from the bathroom floor, reducing trip hazards

Built-in shower seating for those who find standing for extended periods difficult

Reinforced walls for future grab bar installation, even if they are not needed immediately. The blocking is installed during construction when it’s simple and affordable

Handheld shower heads positioned for seated or standing use

Comfort-height toilets that reduce strain on knees and make sitting and standing easier

Non-slip flooring throughout to prevent falls

Adequate lighting, including night lights for safe nighttime navigation

Vanities at comfortable heights with easy-to-reach storage

KITCHEN DESIGN FOR LIFELONG ACCESSIBILITY

The heart of your home should remain welcoming and functional as your needs evolve. Aging in place kitchen design prioritizes ease of use:

Pull-out shelving and drawers instead of deep cabinets that require reaching or bending

Side-opening ovens positioned at an accessible height to eliminate dangerous reaching over hot surfaces

Cooktops with front or side-mounted controls to prevent reaching over burners

Counter space at comfortable working heights

Task lighting to compensate for age-related vision changes

Easy-to-grip cabinet hardware and lever faucets that don’t require strong grip or twisting motions

Open floor plans that allow for easy movement and social interaction while cooking

LAUNDRY MADE EASY

Too often overlooked, laundry spaces can become obstacles as bending and lifting become more challenging. Smart aging in place design for laundry includes:

Front-loading washers and dryers, ideally on raised platforms to reduce bending

Main-floor laundry rooms to eliminate stairs with heavy baskets

Folding counters at comfortable heights

Storage within easy reach without requiring a step stool

OUTDOOR ACCESSIBILITY: ENJOYING YOUR YARD SAFELY

Your outdoor spaces should be just as accessible as your interior. Aging friendly home renovations and new construction from Pacific Homes incorporate:

No step entry from your home to outdoor living spaces; no stairs means no barriers to enjoying fresh air

Gentle slopes or ramped access where elevation changes are necessary

Wide, level pathways connecting your home to gardens, patios, and other outdoor amenities

Covered outdoor areas accessible directly from main living spaces

Thoughtful grading and landscaping that creates level outdoor rooms, even on sloping lots

Good lighting for safe evening use

Railings on any steps or ramps for added stability

Planning Ahead: Wheelchair Accessible Home Designs

While many of the features above help maintain mobility and independence, thoughtful planning also considers potential future needs. Wheelchair accessible house designs build upon the aging-in-place foundation with additional considerations that ensure your home remains functional regardless of how mobility changes.

ENHANCED BATHROOM ACCESSIBILITY

When planning for potential wheelchair use, wheelchair accessible bathroom design includes additional features beyond basic aging-in-place modifications:

Adequate turning radius (60-inch diameter circle) for wheelchair maneuverability

Clear space alongside toilets for wheelchair-to-toilet transfers

Accessible vanities with knee clearance underneath for wheelchair users to roll under the sink

Roll-under shower controls that can be reached while seated

Strategically placed grab bars at optimal heights and positions for transfers

KITCHEN CONSIDERATIONS FOR WHEELCHAIR USERS

For those planning wheelchair accessible kitchen spaces, additional design elements ensure full functionality:

Varied counter heights with lower prep areas that include knee clearance for seated work

Open space beneath the sink and cooktop allowing wheelchair users to roll under

Wide aisles (minimum 48 inches) allowing easy turning and maneuvering with a wheelchair

Pull-out work surfaces at accessible heights

Side-by-side refrigerators or drawer-style refrigeration for easier access

LAUNDRY ROOM WHEELCHAIR ACCESS

When considering wheelchair accessibility for laundry spaces:

Adequate space around appliances for wheelchair access and transfers

Front-loading machines positioned for easy reach from a seated position

Wide entry doors and turning radius within the room

COMPEHENSIVE ACCESSIBILITY SOLUTIONS

For a complete, barrier free home design, additional elements include:

Wheelchair ramps for homes integrated architecturally into the design rather than added as afterthoughts, with proper slope ratios (1:12 or gentler)

Platform lifts for short elevation changes, particularly useful for sunken living rooms or split-level entries

Proper structural support planned during construction for future ramp or lift additions

Automated door openers where beneficial

Appropriate clearances at all doorways and passages for unobstructed wheelchair movement

The beauty of working with Pacific Homes is that these wheelchair accessible home designs don’t compromise aesthetics. Modern universal design house plans seamlessly integrate accessibility features into beautiful, contemporary spaces that anyone would be proud to call home.

How Pacific Homes is Transforming Alaska’s Building Landscape

Alaska’s breathtaking natural beauty comes with obstacles that demand innovative solutions to be a home builder in the State. It has a very short build season due to its harsh weather through the winter months. For this reason, it is important to make the most of the prime building season.

Naturally, these unique challenges make Alaskan Homeowners consider either prefab or modular construction. While a modular home can be the simplest option, there are many advantages of building a modern prefab home.

Since the 1980s, Pacific Homes’ dedicated team has partnered with clients, builders, and architects to bring custom home designs to life. Our energy-efficient Pacific SmartWall® System and prefabricated components make it possible to build high-quality, custom homes on an accelerated timeline. Because most components are manufactured off-site, builders can assemble homes faster and more efficiently on location.

Whether you’re planning to build in Anchorage, or a remote location, understanding the differences between modular buildings and prefabricated homes can be the key to a successful home building experience.

Why You Should Build Prefab

Pacific Homes prefabricated packages represent a revolutionary approach to construction in extreme climates. Unlike traditional stick-built homes that require months of on-site construction, we utilize pre cut components manufactured in controlled factory environments. This means major construction happens indoors, protected from unpredictable weather.

Our panelized system delivers precision-engineered home packages that arrive ready for rapid assembly. Each square foot of your home is carefully planned exact specifications, ensuring perfect fit and minimal waste. This approach is particularly valuable for projects in remote locations where material delivery and labor availability can be challenging.

Benefits of Prefab Homes in Alaska

Prefab construction has become not just an alternative to Arctic modular homes, but often the smartest choice for homeowners across the Last Frontier, here’s a few reasons why:

1. Cost Savings

Guaranteed package prices minimizes costly overruns and allow for shorter build times. This means fewer labor requirements and reduced material waste, all saving you money. Our transparent per square foot pricing helps you understand exactly what your investment covers, with no hidden surprises. The efficiency of our prefab system means Alaska home builders can complete projects faster, reducing labor costs that can quickly escalate during the premium building season.

2. Outstanding Quality Control

All major components of Pacific Homes are built in a climate-controlled environment with high quality, premium grade lumber. This reduces warping, splitting, shrinking, drywall cracks, nail popping, and mold-related issues in your finished home. Advanced computerized equipment used throughout construction identify potential design flaws prior to assembly.

Our factory environment ensures every piece of your home meets exact standards before it leaves for your building site, something impossible to guarantee with traditional on-site construction exposed to the elements.

3. Superior Energy Efficiency

Our exclusive Pacific SmartWall® System achieves superior energy efficiency for a 2×6 wall. It provides air tightness, noise reduction, and superior thermal efficiency to get you through harsh winters. This advanced system keeps your home comfortable year-round while protecting you from extreme temperatures.

The energy efficiency of our homes means lower heating costs and a smaller environmental footprint, preserving the state’s natural beauty for future generations while keeping your utility bills manageable.

4. Fast and Stress-Free

Panelized kit homes, the form of prefab construction that Pacific Homes specializes in, is mostly constructed off site. This means that the number of days building on site, dealing with weather complications or other issues, are greatly reduced. The result is faster, more secure move-in dates and less stress throughout the process.

While traditional builds can drag on through multiple seasons, our prefab systems can have you move-in ready in a fraction of the time.

5. Contractor Network

We have a dedicated contractor network that we will connect you with. These contractors are familiar with assembling our homes and will complete the job on time and on budget. This ensures your project proceeds smoothly from delivery to completion.

6. Eco-Friendly and Built Green

We take environmental sustainability seriously, providing practical, affordable custom solutions that make Pacific Homes among the ‘greenest’ available. Our efficient manufacturing process minimizes waste, while our precut approach means less construction debris left on site.

Every square foot of material is calculated to reduce waste, and our energy-efficient designs mean your home will have a smaller carbon footprint for decades to come.

Bring a floor plan to us, choose one of ours, or customize a plan with us to perfectly match your vision. Our team will then get to work, making your dream a reality. From traditional to sophisticated modern designs, our Alaska house plans accommodate every vision and lifestyle.

Whether you need 800 square foot Alaska cabin kit or 4,000 foot luxury estate, our flexible system adapts to your needs while maintaining the structural integrity required for demanding climates.

8. We Deliver Anywhere

Wherever you are planning to build, Pacific Homes can work for you. Our prefab homes are designed for efficient transport and assembly, even in remote locations where traditional construction would be prohibitively expensive or logistically impossible.

Nestled among the towering evergreens of British Columbia’s stunning Gulf Islands, this custom-designed cabin showcases the perfect marriage of contemporary design and natural integration. Built with our custom panelized prefab construction method, this project demonstrates how modern building techniques can deliver exceptional quality while respecting the sensitive ecosystems of BC’s coastal regions.

The exterior features clean lines with durable charcoal vertical siding that weathers beautifully in the coastal climate, complemented by warm wood accents around the windows and entrance. The thoughtfully designed wrap-around deck extends the living space outdoors, creating an ideal platform for taking in the forest views. Solar panels integrated into the roof design reflect a commitment to sustainable living—an increasingly important consideration for Gulf Islands properties where traditional utility connections can be challenging.

Inside, the cabin exemplifies the sophisticated aesthetic that’s possible with today’s prefab cottage construction. The open-concept living area is bathed in natural light from expansive windows that frame views of the surrounding forest. Light wood flooring in a contemporary wide-plank style flows throughout the space, while the painted tongue-and-groove ceiling adds subtle texture and visual interest. The kitchen showcases how custom prefab homes in BC can incorporate high-end finishes. Its white shaker cabinetry, marble countertops, subway tile backsplash, and stainless steel appliances are all thoughtfully integrated to create the desired look; one that seamlessly blends a modern, clean aesthetic into its natural surroundings.

While creating the floorplan, our clients wanted a design that was simple and compact to minimize cost per square foot, while getting the most of every inch of their living space. The wrap-around decking was also a priority, as this cottage would primarily be a space to visit in the summer. This covered outdoor space flows into the open concept main living area that combines a kitchen, dining room and living room. The centre of this space surrounds a charming fireplace, providing an abundance of warmth. The opposite side of the cottage includes the primary suite, a study that doubles as a guest suite with it’s Murphy bed, and a bathroom between them, complete with luxurious heated flooring.

Customized to fit the property, the Gulf Islands cottage’s elevated foundation system is a practical solution for building on the region’s sloped, forested lots. This approach minimizes site disturbance while providing level living space and protecting the structure from moisture. This is a critical consideration in British Columbia’s coastal environment. The efficient construction timeline associated with prefab building methods also meant reduced impact on the surrounding ecosystem and neighborhood during the build process.

This stunning custom home showcases the perfect blend of modern prefab construction techniques and traditional coastal architecture on one of British Columbia’s picturesque islands. Designed to maximize the breathtaking waterfront views while harmonizing with the natural landscape, this residence demonstrates how contemporary kit home systems can deliver both efficiency and architectural distinction in BC’s unique island environments.

The home features a distinctive multi-level design with a striking green metal roof that complements the surrounding evergreen forest. The exterior combines warm neutral tones in horizontal siding with crisp white trim, creating a welcoming aesthetic that feels both contemporary and timeless. Large windows throughout the structure, including dramatic triangular gable-end glazing, flood the interior with natural light while framing spectacular views of the surrounding islands and ocean waters. The generous wraparound decking extends the living space outdoors, providing multiple vantage points to enjoy the property’s remarkable setting.

To best suit its homeowner’s needs, the floorplan for this custom build has everything one would need on the main, upper floor with a full unfinished basement below. The main floor is much like a rancher house plan, complete with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, dining room, and laundry room. The primary suite is positioned on its own wing of the home, providing a peaceful retreat, highlighted by its spectacular ocean view and en suite bathroom with his-and-hers sinks. The far wing from there is where the full kitchen, dining room, laundry room and the other bathroom is located. Between these are where you can find the second and third bedrooms, as well as the spacious living space. This living room features vaulted ceilings, allowing for expansive windows, flooding the room with natural light and allowing you to fully appreciate the house’s spectacular setting.

One of the most versatile features of this island home is its full unfinished basement, which provides the homeowners with exceptional flexibility for future expansion. This substantial space offers countless possibilities—whether transformed into additional bedrooms and bathrooms for extended family, converted into a private guest suite with separate entrance, or finished as recreational space including a home theater, gym, or workshop. The unfinished basement allows the homeowners to adapt their living space to evolving needs over time, adding significant long-term value while keeping initial construction costs manageable. This forward-thinking approach to custom home design is particularly valuable in BC’s island communities, where building opportunities are limited and maximizing property potential is essential.

This British Columbia custom home exemplifies the advantages of modern prefab construction methods, which allowed for precise manufacturing in controlled conditions followed by efficient on-site assembly. The result is a durable, energy-efficient structure perfectly suited to the island’s climate, with the quality craftsmanship and personalized design that discerning BC homeowners expect. From the carefully planned rooflines that shed the region’s seasonal rainfall to the thoughtful integration of multiple living levels that adapt to the sloping terrain, every element reflects the expertise gained from years of building custom homes throughout British Columbia’s diverse landscapes.

For many, winter means the construction of your home will need to wait. With most custom home builders, this would be true. There are many challenges traditional construction methods face in the colder months. Pacific Homes' panelized prefab homes are primarily built in our climate-controlled facility before it is shipped and assembled on site, allowing us to build projects throughout the winter.

For many prospective homeowners, the arrival of winter signals the end of building season. Traditional construction methods face significant challenges when temperatures drop: concrete struggles to cure properly, lumber sits exposed to the elements, and construction timelines stretch indefinitely as crews battle unpredictable weather conditions.

But what if winter didn’t have to mean waiting?

At Pacific Homes, our panelized prefab construction method transforms winter from an obstacle into an opportunity. While traditional stick-built homes languish under tarps, our clients are watching their dream homes take shape—regardless of what the thermometer reads.

The Traditional Winter Construction Challenge

Anyone who’s attempted traditional construction during winter months knows the frustration. Cold weather affects nearly every aspect of conventional building: wood can warp and split in fluctuating temperatures, materials become difficult to work with, and worker productivity plummets as crews battle harsh conditions. Frozen ground complicates foundation work, and when spring arrives, thawing and settling can lead to cracking and structural issues.

Perhaps most challenging is the exposure factor. In traditional construction, your building materials—your investment—sit exposed to rain, snow, and freezing temperatures for weeks or months. Every storm brings potential damage, and every delay compounds the problem.

The Pacific Homes Advantage: Climate-Controlled Precision

Here’s where our panelized approach changes everything.

While winter weather rages outside, your custom home is being meticulously constructed inside our climate-controlled facility. We use premium-grade lumber that’s protected from moisture, temperature swings, and the warping and splitting that plague outdoor construction sites. Advanced computerized equipment identifies potential design flaws before assembly even begins, ensuring precision that outdoor conditions simply cannot match.

Our proprietary Pacific SmartWall® System is engineered and pre-insulated in this controlled environment, achieving significantly higher levels of energy efficiency when compared to traditionally framed walls. These panels are built to your exact specifications, with no compromise in quality regardless of the season.

From Facility to Foundation: A Faster Winter Build

Once your foundation is ready, the magic happens. Your custom home arrives in panels, ready for rapid assembly. What would take months of exposed outdoor work in traditional construction becomes a matter of days with our panelized system.

This speed isn’t about cutting corners—it’s about smart engineering. Because the bulk of construction happens in our facility, your on-site assembly time is dramatically reduced. This means:

Minimal weather exposure for building materials and components

Shorter construction timelines that don’t stretch through entire winter seasons

Reduced labor costs from efficient assembly processes

Less risk from weather-related delays and damage

Our homes are being built throughout the year, in all seasons. Winter doesn’t slow us down—it’s simply another opportunity to deliver exceptional homes to our clients.

Complete Customization Without the Wait

One of the biggest misconceptions about prefab construction is that it limits your options. Nothing could be further from the truth with Pacific Homes.

Unlike traditional modular construction that restricts size and shape, our panelized method allows for any floorplan you can imagine. Want floor-to-ceiling windows to better gaze at the snow falling? A unique roofline that maximizes your mountain views? An open-concept design that’s uniquely yours? Our system delivers complete customizability without the weather-dependent timelines of stick-built construction.

Every Pacific Homes project is entirely unique—designed to fit your specific property, your vision, and your lifestyle. The only difference is that you don’t have to wait for perfect weather to make it happen.

Year-Round Comfort, Built In

The benefits of building with Pacific Homes extend far beyond construction. That climate-controlled assembly process ensures your home is built to exacting standards, with superior energy efficiency built into every panel.

The Pacific SmartWall System keeps your home warm during winter months and cool through summer—all while reducing your monthly utility costs. It’s an investment that pays dividends from your very first heating bill.

Your Dream Home Doesn’t Have to Wait for Spring

If you’ve been putting off your custom home project until warmer weather arrives, it’s time to reconsider. With Pacific Homes’ panelized construction method, winter is no longer a barrier—it’s just another season when your dream home can become reality.

Our unique approach combines the unlimited customization of traditional construction with the efficiency, quality control, and weather-independence of prefabricated building. The result? Your custom home, built to your exact specifications, without the seasonal limitations that traditional construction imposes.

Whether you’re ready to break ground or just beginning to explore the possibilities, our team is here to help you understand how panelized construction can work for your specific project. Don’t let the calendar dictate when you can start building your future.

Kit homes are experiencing a renaissance as modern homebuilders seek the perfect balance of quality, efficiency, and personalization. Unlike traditional construction methods that can take months and leave homeowners with limited customization options, today’s prefabricated kit homes offer sophisticated design flexibility while maintaining superior construction standards. As we move through 2020’s, distinct patterns are emerging that reflect our changing relationship with home environments – from our increased awareness of sustainability and wellness to our evolving work-life balance needs. These trends represent more than aesthetic choices; they embody a fundamental shift toward homes that adapt to our lifestyles rather than constraining them. Drawing from Pacific Homes’ decades of experience and their comprehensive catalog of customizable designs, we’ve identified the ten most significant trends shaping kit home construction this year.

1. Open Concept Living with Seamless Flow

The traditional compartmentalized home is giving way to expansive, flowing spaces that encourage connection and flexibility. Modern homeowners are embracing the philosophy that walls should define function, not limit it. This design approach removes barriers between kitchen, dining, and living areas, creating multifunctional spaces where families can cook, entertain, and relax simultaneously. The benefits are significant – open layouts foster communication, make supervision of children easier, and create a sense of spaciousness even in smaller footprints. Additionally, the removal of walls allows natural light to travel deeper into the home, reducing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours and creating a brighter, more welcoming atmosphere. The trend has evolved beyond simply knocking down walls to include thoughtful zoning through furniture placement, ceiling height variations, and strategic use of materials to define different areas while maintaining the open feel.

Our most popular home design is a perfect example of a plan featuring open concept living. The Malcolm house plan is a 1,550 square foot open floor plan with tall ceilings that flood the main living space with natural light. The kitchen seamlessly connects to the dining area and living room, creating the perfect space to share with friends and family.

2. Indoor-Outdoor Living Integration

The pandemic fundamentally changed how we view our relationship with outdoor spaces, and this shift has permanently influenced home design. Modern homeowners are no longer content with simply having a backyard – they want their indoor and outdoor spaces to function as one cohesive living environment. This trend goes beyond adding a patio; it’s about creating seamless transitions through strategic use of materials, consistent flooring that flows from inside to outside, and architectural elements that blur the line between interior and exterior. Large sliding glass doors, accordion windows, and covered outdoor kitchens are becoming common features. The health benefits of increased exposure to natural light and fresh air, combined with the entertainment value of expanded living space, make this trend both practical and desirable. Climate considerations are also driving innovation, with covered outdoor areas extending the usable season in various weather conditions. Modern technology supports this trend through weather-resistant materials, outdoor heating and cooling systems, and smart home integration that extends indoor conveniences to outdoor spaces.

The Napa is a plan that offers 1,425 square feet with an expansive open layout that enables homeowners to enjoy indoor-outdoor flow with its impressive patio area.

3. Natural Materials and Warm Earth Tones

The sterile, all-white aesthetic of previous years is giving way to a more grounded, organic approach to interior design. This shift reflects a collective desire to reconnect with nature and create homes that feel authentic and timeless. Warm earth tones like sun-baked terracotta, deep forest green, and rich ochre are replacing cool grays and stark whites. These colors not only create more inviting spaces but also have psychological benefits – earth tones are scientifically proven to reduce stress and create feelings of stability and comfort. The integration of natural materials extends beyond color to texture and authenticity. Reclaimed wood, natural stone, and exposed timber framing are becoming focal points rather than hidden structural elements. This trend also aligns with sustainability goals, as natural materials often have lower environmental impacts and can improve indoor air quality. The design principles underlying this trend recognize that humans have an innate connection to nature, and homes that reflect this connection contribute to overall well-being. Modern applications include living walls, natural fiber textiles, and stone accent walls that bring outdoor textures inside while maintaining contemporary functionality.

Many Pacific Homes include timber framing features, consistent with this home trend. If you are interested in adding some natural elements in your custom design, get in touch with one of our Build Specialists and we can bring your vision to life!

4. Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Features

Environmental consciousness is no longer a luxury consideration – it’s become a fundamental requirement in modern home design. Rising energy costs, climate change concerns, and improved technology have made energy efficiency both economically and environmentally essential. Today’s homeowners are looking beyond basic insulation to comprehensive energy systems that include high-performance windows, advanced HVAC systems, and smart home technology that optimizes energy usage. The focus has expanded to include the entire building envelope – the complete system that separates indoor and outdoor environments. Superior air sealing, thermal bridges elimination, and moisture management are becoming standard practices. This trend is also driving innovation in renewable energy integration, with solar panels, geothermal systems, and battery storage becoming more accessible and affordable. The long-term financial benefits are compelling – energy-efficient homes not only reduce monthly utility costs but also maintain higher resale values and qualify for various incentives and rebates. Building codes are evolving to support these advances, with net-zero energy requirements becoming standard in many jurisdictions.

Our Pacific SmartWall Technology is an exclusive building system that outperforms traditional insulation. It perfectly suits this building trend and can help homeowners achieve net-zero and passive house standards.

5. Multifunctional and Flexible Spaces

The traditional concept of single-purpose rooms is becoming obsolete as homeowners seek maximum value from every square foot. This shift reflects changing lifestyle patterns – more people working from home, children needing dedicated study spaces, and families requiring areas that can transform based on daily needs. Modern flexible design goes beyond simple furniture arrangement to include architectural features that support multiple functions. Built-in storage systems, moveable walls, convertible furniture, and strategic lighting design all contribute to spaces that can adapt throughout the day. The home office that becomes a guest room, the dining room that transforms into a classroom, and the basement that serves as both recreation area and home gym are becoming standard expectations. This trend is particularly important for younger homeowners who may be starting with smaller spaces but anticipating growing families, and for aging-in-place design where rooms may need to serve different functions as mobility needs change over time. Technology integration supports this flexibility through wireless connectivity, multiple power outlets, and adaptable lighting systems that can change the mood and function of spaces instantly.

The Livingston plan is a great example of this. Its 2,706 square feet of space include a recreation room, and a games room. All of this space can be used for a multitude of purposes throughout the life of the home. It’s also important to always note that all of our houses can be completely customized to better fit your unique needs.

6. Modern Farmhouse Aesthetic

The modern farmhouse style represents the perfect marriage of nostalgic charm and contemporary functionality. This enduring trend speaks to our collective desire for authenticity and connection to simpler times, while still embracing modern conveniences and open living concepts. The aesthetic combines clean, geometric lines with rustic textures, creating spaces that feel both sophisticated and approachable. Key elements include board-and-batten siding, metal roofing, large front porches, and barn-inspired details, but executed with modern materials and construction techniques. Interior features often include shiplap walls, exposed beams, farmhouse sinks, and wide-plank flooring. What makes this trend particularly appealing is its versatility – it works equally well in rural settings where it feels naturally integrated, and in suburban or urban environments where it provides a calming contrast to the surrounding density. Modern interpretations often include smart home technology seamlessly integrated into traditional aesthetics, creating homes that honor the past while embracing the future.

The Chinook is a modern farmhouse plan with bright, open design that creates an inviting space while feeling larger than its actual size. This house plan was created by our friends at Robinson Home Design and perfectly captures that desirable modern farmhouse aesthetic.

7. Emphasis on Natural Light

Natural light has evolved from a desirable feature to an essential element of healthy home design. Scientific research continues to reinforce the connection between natural light exposure and both physical and mental well-being. Adequate natural light helps regulate circadian rhythms, improves mood, increases productivity, and can even support better sleep patterns. From a design perspective, natural light makes spaces appear larger, reduces energy costs, and enhances the true colors of interior finishes and furnishings. Modern approaches to maximizing natural light go far beyond simply adding more windows. Strategic placement considers sun angles throughout the day and across seasons, while features like light wells and skylights bring illumination to interior spaces that traditionally relied on artificial lighting. Reflective surfaces, light-colored finishes, and open floor plans all amplify natural light throughout the home. The trend also includes consideration of privacy and glare control through features like automated blinds, frosted glass panels, and architectural overhangs that provide shade when needed while still allowing light penetration. Advanced glazing technologies now allow for maximum light transmission while maintaining energy efficiency and UV protection.

One of our house plans that best integrates is the Cascade design. This floorplan’s living space is completely designed around the cascade of sunlight that envelops its great room.

8. Single-Story Living

The appeal of single-story homes is experiencing a significant resurgence, driven by multiple converging factors. An aging population increasingly values the safety and accessibility that comes with avoiding stairs, while young families appreciate the ease of supervision and the flow that single-level living provides. From a practical standpoint, rancher homes offer lower maintenance costs – no need for multi-story HVAC systems, simpler roofing, and easier exterior maintenance access. The design challenges of creating interesting, varied spaces without a second floor lead to innovations in ceiling height variation, creative floor plan layouts, and sophisticated use of outdoor spaces as extensions of the interior. Modern single-story designs often incorporate split bedroom layouts for privacy, great rooms with vaulted ceilings, and extensive outdoor living areas that effectively double the usable space. The trend also aligns with sustainable building practices, as single-story homes can be more energy-efficient, being easier to heat and cool evenly. Universal design principles are increasingly being incorporated, making these homes accessible for people of all ages and mobility levels.

Pacific Homes has a large variety of ranchers in our home catalogue. This collection of designs provides the perfect jumping off point for our clients to create their dream homes. If there are any details you would like to include in your custom design, make sure to mention it to one of our build specialists!

9. Multi-Generational and Flexible Housing

Changing family dynamics and economic realities are driving a significant shift toward housing that can accommodate multiple generations or provide additional income streams. Rising housing costs, student debt, elder care needs, and cultural preferences are all contributing to more complex living arrangements that traditional single-family homes cannot adequately support. This trend goes beyond simply adding a guest room to include thoughtful design that provides privacy, independence, and dignity for all residents while maintaining family connection. Successful multi-generational design includes separate entrances, kitchen facilities, and living areas, along with shared spaces that encourage interaction when desired. The trend also encompasses accessory dwelling units (ADUs), in-law suites, and dual living arrangements that can provide rental income or accommodate aging parents. Flexible housing design anticipates changing needs over time – spaces that can be easily converted as families grow, age, or experience changing economic circumstances. This approach to housing design recognizes that homes need to adapt to life changes rather than requiring families to move every time their needs evolve. Legal and zoning changes are supporting this trend, with many municipalities updating regulations to allow for ADUs and flexible housing arrangements.

Many of our cottage house plans are often built as secondary housing units or ADUs. Browse this collection of smaller square foot homes for inspiration on how best to maximize your property.

10. Customization and Personalization

The era of one-size-fits-all floor plans is definitively ending as homeowners increasingly demand homes that reflect their unique lifestyles, values, and aesthetic preferences. This trend represents a fundamental shift in how we think about home construction – from a product-based approach to a service-based one where the home becomes a collaborative creation between homeowner and builder. Modern customization goes beyond choosing cabinet colors and flooring materials to include fundamental spatial relationships, ceiling heights, window orientations, and even structural elements. The trend also reflects changing demographics – millennials and Gen Z homeowners have grown up with customizable everything, from social media feeds to coffee orders, and they expect the same level of personalization in their homes. Additionally, diverse family structures, work-from-home requirements, and multigenerational living arrangements all require spaces that standard floor plans simply cannot accommodate. Modern customization also considers future adaptability, with designs that can evolve as families grow and change.

Though we have a variety of house plans that our clients can choose, over 95% of Pacific Homes are customized to reflect personal preferences. Our design team are experts in making your personal vision for your home a reality. We can help you design, engineer and build your perfect dream home.
