18/05/2012 : SPC Publication to Boost Solomon Islands Handcraft Industry

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has republished a landmark book on Solomon Islands handcrafts. Handcrafts of the Solomon Islands was compiled by the late writer-photographer Robert Austin and first published in 1986, but has been out of print for many years. The new edition is expected to help boost market demand for the South Pacific nation’s unique cultural artefacts. The book is available on SPC’s website at www.spc.int/en/featured-publications.html (choose ‘Agriculture and Forestry’ under ‘Divisional Publications’). Read more. 18/05/2012 : Over 1000 students to visit Kermadec Exhibition

More than 1000 primary school students will visit the Kermadec Exhibition at the New Zealand High Commission in Nuku'alofa from 22 May - 1 June 2012.In May 2011 the Kermadec Initiative of the Pew Environment Group invited nine of the South Pacific's most prestigious and highly-acclaimed artists to join them on the navy ship HMNZS Otago to voyage from New Zealand, through the Kermadec region, to Tonga. The Edgewater Resort & Spa were host Resort for the third year running and joint major sponsor of the 18th Air NZ Rarotonga International Triathlon held on Saturday 12th May 2012 (1500m swim, 41km cycle, 10km run). There were around 40 athletes and family who took advantage of the great specials The Edgewater had to offer for triathletes, and also enjoyed the fact the pre-race Pasta dinner, the Awards dinner and post Cycle race BBQ were all held at the Resort. The 30th edition of the New Caledonia International Marathon will be held on July 29, 2012. It was created in 1983 in collaboration with the city of Tachikawa a suburb of Tokyo in Japan, the International Marathon of New Caledonia is held annually. Read more. 18/05/2012 : News from South Korea, Expo update

As soon as Nick Issachar, mini world expo Booth Manager arrived in Seoul, South Korea, dialogues and meetings were held with a number of key companies and agencies from SSK Tour, Mr Kim, and Mr Sae who is the Australian Tourism Rep in Seoul to build network and open new marketing opportunities for Korea and Vanuatu. The group talked about how Vanuatu can be packaged into the Korea-Australia-Pacific holiday packages, and a suggestion from Mr Kim and Mr Sae was to do sales training with top outbound companies in Seoul. Mr Issachar visited the Vanuatu booth and has confirmed that it’s already creating an impressive look and feel of Vanuatu far different from other booths. Joe Pakoa, Brenda Andre and Nick Issachar will be reporting back to the Vanuatu Tourism Office on the progress of expo events, at a regular basis to be included in Island Nius releases. 18/05/2012 : SPTO Organises Regional Workshop for Heads of Tourism Organisations, Private Sector Board Members

In an effort to increase awareness and understanding of the EU funded “Pacific Regional Tourism Capacity Building Programme” (PRTCBP), the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) hosted a one-day workshop at Novotel Nadi, Friday, May 18th. The workshop will target heads and representatives of beneficiary Pacific ACP countries and SPTO’s Board of Directors and is hoped to generate discussions that will help the implementation of the Programme. SPTO Chief Executive Mr. Ilisoni Vuidreketi said “Through this EU-funded project, SPTO aims to help its member countries to improve their tourism policies and plans, and generally build their capacity to grow and manage their tourism sector sustainably. More importantly, SPTO will help the private sector, with special emphasis on small-scale operators, to access markets by providing research and intelligence support on niche markets, training and skills development, as well as product improvements.” Read more. 18/05/2012 : P&O Cruises to sail to PNG

P&O Cruises have added Papua New Guinea to its amazing range of Pacific Islands destinations as part of the new 2013-14 program. This is the first time PNG will feature in one of P&O’s itineraries with the new cruises aboard the Pacific Dawn visiting the remote islands and towns of spectacular Milne Bay. The maiden cruise departs from Brisbane in October 2013. This coincides with the sacred Canoe and Kundu Festival where the local communities compete in canoe races, costume display and cultural performances. This itinerary also includes stopovers at the local capital Alotau as well as the beautiful white sandy beaches of Doini Island and the culturally-rich Trobriand Islands. Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, said the cruise line was excited to be sailing its first dedicated cruises to Papua New Guinea on a superliner. “Papua New Guinea is one of the most remote and untouched corners of the world – it’s so close to Australia geographically, but a million miles away in terms of culture and scenery,” Ms Sherry said. It's a lifestyle residents are truly grateful to live each day. At 644 feet, The World is the largest privately owned yacht on the planet. Each of the resident owns one or more of the 165 private onboard residences, and collectively, they own the ship, ensuring that their experiences - both onboard and off - are far beyond current luxury travel standards. For the first time, The World arrived in Vanuatu and was welcomed in 8 different islands from 6th to 18th April 2012. After cruising through New Caledonia and Fiji, Vanuatu was the next destination where the residents were delightfully immersed in a broad range of tours and visits from cultural festivals, village visits, and eco tours to simply relaxing on deserted beaches, pristine blue holes and lagoons. 18/05/2012 : Small Tourism Operators Get Web Presence

A workshop is being held in the Solomon Islands to help medium and smaller sized accomodation operators get up to speed with their online presence. The pilot-project is intended for operators in Honiara and the central islands province, to create websites so visitors can book online. The Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau says 12 accommodation operators are in the process of getting websites up and running. The sites will then also be channeled in with other travel websites like expedia and wotif. The marketing manager at the bureau, Freda Unusi, says compared to other South Pacific countries, accommodation operators in the Solomon Islands have virtually no online presence. Read more. 18/05/2012 : 2012 international tourist arrivals up worldwide

The first results of 2012 indicate that international tourism continued to show sustained growth in spite of challenging economic conditions. During the first two months of 2012, international tourist arrivals grew by an estimated 5.7 percent compared to the same period of 2011. Africa was the fastest-growing region with an increase of over 7 percent in international tourist arrivals. Asia and the Pacific saw a 7 percent increase in tourist arrivals, led by South Asia and Southeast Asia (both +10 percent). Northeast Asia (+6 percent) recorded higher growth as well, with arrivals to Japan up by almost 10 percent in the first quarter. The Americas also reported significant growth (+6 percent), driven by the sustained strong demand in South America (+8 percent) and Central America (+7 percent). Worldwide, international tourist arrivals surpassed 131 million in the first two months of 2012, up from 124 million in the same period of 2011. According to the forecast prepared by UNWTO at the beginning of the year, international tourist arrivals are projected to increase by some 3 percent to 4 percent in 2012. Further enhancements were announced as part of airline’s revitalisation strategy. Air Pacific, Fiji’s national airline, continues to prepare for a significant relaunch in 2013 with the announcement today of three key strategic partnerships. The partnerships will further enhance international travellers’ in-flight experience onboard the ‘new’, revitalised airline. Announced at Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange (BFTE) in Fiji, the strategic partners selected by Air Pacific include Panasonic Avionics Corporation (Panasonic), Zodiac company Weber Aircraft, and Singapore Airlines Engineering Company (SIAEC) who will all contribute their services or premium products to assist Air Pacific with the new aircraft. 18/05/2012 : Independence Celebrations - 50th Anniversary

In 1962, Samoa became the first South Pacific island to gain independence. This year marks Samoa's Golden Jubilee. Government this year decided to make 2012, a year-long celebration commemorating 50 years of self-determination for the country. The official flag-raising ceremony will take place on 1 June at Ti’afau. A line-up of foreign leaders and international representations have been invited to this special occasion. Government has also approved a week of national celebrations to coincide with this event. In addition to a programme of sport and festivities, commemorative books and multi-media publications will also be launched during that week. 18/05/2012 : Niue Emerging Pacific Women Leaders Project Launched

Launched at Makini Hall, Alofi, Niue Island. It is a project facilitated by Aus Aid, NZ Aid, Vital Voices, and the International Finance Corporation. Approximately 80-90 guests from a combination of Niue’s leading government representatives, non-government organisations, private business sector, and community representatives filled the hall to celebrate the 2012 project. The project aims are to encourage young Niue women between 15 and 34 years old to consider career and business opportunities in Niue’s burgeoning tourism industry. In an interview following the launch, the Project’s country ambassador Jannitta Pilisi also said “I love Niue! Niue’s tourism industry is taking off and our young women should grab the opportunity to start businesses that fill gaps in the industry and help them and their families to prosper in Niue.” Read more. A strategic partnership between Pacific Trade & Invest and a local New Zealand travel wholesaler, has helped achieve substantial increases in numbers of fishing tours and tourists to Fiji, Niue, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. PT&I primarily provided assistance with advertising and promotional material for the wholesaler’s campaign. Fishing tourism in the Pacific islands, once overlooked in favour of destinations further afield, is now appealing to more people. With the open, inviting waters of the Pacific, teeming with an abundant variety of fishing species, the region is well on its way to luring more avid fishermen and women to its waters. Read more. THE Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange has attracted many new potential investors, with some journeying from as far as Russia. It provides a platform for agents to meet and greet their clients to secure future business deals and is being held in Denarau, Nadi. Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange committee chairman David Voss said this year's event had drawn many new wholesalers from Europe and Asia. "It has been reasonably static this year but new people are coming in," he said. "Something very interesting is that we have people coming in from Russia and China so that is very good." Mr Voss said international wholesalers were looking for up-markets and the BFTE was the perfect place for clients to meet their agents. Read more. 18/05/2012 : Fiji’s National Airline Achieves Another Milestone In Turnaround Strategy

New name, new aircraft, increased frequency, and improved product. The latest initiatives in the turnaround strategy of Air Pacific, Fiji’s National Carrier, have been revealed, including a rebranding of the airline and a return to its 1958 name of ‘Fiji Airways’. The move is the latest in a series of initiatives that are part of a 360 degree review and restructure of the airline, which has seen the flag carrier reverse losses, improve its schedules and network, and make significant investments in new aircraft and its onboard product. The Pacific Plan and its links to the development priorities of Tuvalu was discussed at the Pacific Plan Information Day held in Funafuti on 1st May 2012. “The Pacific Plan Information Day was an initiative of the Government of Tuvalu for officials and other key stakeholders to learn more about the Pacific Plan and the Plan’s influence in strengthening the development priorities of Tuvalu. Trade Ministers from across the Pacific region will converge next Friday (11th May) in Majuro, the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, for the 2012 Forum Trade Ministers’ Meeting (FTMM). The trade ministerial will be preceded by the 2012 Forum Trade Officials Meeting (FTOM) from 8th- 9th May, also in Majuro. The island resort has been ideal for its tourists for the last 40 years and with the opening of the new convention centre, Mana Island Resort has now become a perfect spot to hold business meetings. The resort and spa situated in the Mamanuca Group began its operations in 1972. Managing director Takehiro Nishida said in so many ways, Mana Island Resort and Spa was an icon of the positive changes that have taken place in Fiji in the last four decades. 11/05/2012 : Vanuatu Tourism Office new consumer website live

The Vanuatu Tourism Office is excited to announce that after a long wait, the new consumer website’s first stage upgrade is finally complete and transferred from staging to the web address. The transition took place on Friday 27th April, and was deployed by the Moon Communications digital team in Sydney. Consumers will unravel several new features that were not on the previous website including google maps on every product pages, video contents on the islands pages, optional list of suggested itineraries to aid tourists plan their holiday activities better, and more. The VTO would like to thank colleagues in Sydney, the Moon Communications Group, Geordie McNabey and the digital team, for the continuous support in seeing that the new website reaches deployment and is finally launched. 11/05/2012 : Samoa Tourism Authority New Board Of Directors

The Hon. Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi has officially introduced and welcomed the Samoa Tourism Authority’s newly appointed Board of Directors. The official welcome took place in the beginning of April and since then the members met again last week for its first official monthly meeting as the STA Board. The Board, with the exception of the STA CEO, is made up of six dedicated members from the local tourism sector who are committed to work with the Samoa Tourism Authority as well as the tourism industry to ensure the productive and progressive improvement of tourism for Samoa. 11/05/2012 : Visitor stats to be surveyed

A new programme of surveys being launched in June will shed some light on the spending habits and general movements of tourists in the Cook Islands. The Cook Islands Tourism Corporation hopes to gain a better understanding on what the average tourist gets up to in the Cook Islands, from the length of their visit, to where they stay, what activities they engage in, where they shop for food and how much money they spend per day here. Beattie said that the corporation would seek out a wide range of people to join the first survey, which is being planned to occur in June this year. The survey will be conducted quarterly thereafter. The tourism corporation is teaming up with Cook Islands Statistics Office and the Auckland University of Technology to conduct the surveys. Read more. “Have faith in tourism that we will break through into the Korean Market (at the Mini Expo in South Korea)”. The confident statement was made by the Commissioner of Expo for the Pacific and General Manager of National Tourism Office, Linda Kalpoi to the local tourism industry after receiving two sets of Expo uniforms from Evergreen Managing Director, Philip Malas at Mooring Hotel two days ago. Evergreen is the only Tour Company that is representing all other tour operators at the Mini Expo in Korea and it has sponsored the uniform for the Vanuatu Booth operators. The Expo is opening on Saturday this week and closes in August. The Commissioner said, “We can only break through if we all work as a team and a strong front line to showcase Vanuatu as the most beautiful and friendliest place in the Pacific for anyone from Asia to come to enjoy their holiday here”. “I am confident that once we have broken through then we should be able to have direct connection with Asia through airline connections and we are talking about the next three years or so”. Malas said Evergreens current connection with Korea is linked to an agent in Australia. “He receives over 6,000 Korean tourists in one year and some of them get booked through us at Evergreen to visit Vanuatu and with the existing package that we have with the agent, we look forward to increasing the number of tourists as a result of the Expo in Korea”, he said. 11/05/2012 : Online Marketing Worshop for SME Accommodation Providers held in Kiribati

On May 3rd a workshop on online marketing was held in Tarawa, Kiribati for accommodation providers. The workshop, “The 7 Steps To Successful Online Sales” , was sponsored by South Pacific Tourism Organisation [SPTO] and supported by the Pacific Islands Trade & Invest and the Kiribati National Tourism Office. Mr Len Cordiner, chairman of Hotel Link Solutions, ran the workshop which was followed by site visits to 14 accommodation providers over the following 3 days to collect digital content (both photos and written copy). This content will be used to build new e-commerce enabled web sites for all participants …... sites which are expected to be live within the next 6-8 weeks. Most small accommodation providers in Tarawa currently either have no web site at all, or just a very basic one with an email link or inquiry form to make booking inquiries. With the new web sites they will be able to provide instant booking facility for customers as well as a lot more information about the facilities and services available. The web sites come equipped with a very use to use content management system (CMS), allowing accommodation owners to make changes to their web sites as often as needed in order to keep facilities, and rates information up to date.

11/05/2012 : Invitation to join American roadshow

The Cook Islands tourism industry is being invited to join the Tourism Corporation’s North American Road Show this September, which will take in 11 cities and two major markets in its path. The two-week road show is focusing on the west coasts of Canada and the United States, and participants are being given the opportunity to join the tour for the entire journey or one of the two. The road show will begin in Edmonton, Canada, on September 10 and will travel through the cities of Calgary, Kelowna, Vancouver and Langley before crossing the border in to the US. There the journey will pass through Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Monica and Los Angeles. In Canada, the tour will partner with ‘Sunsational South Pacific’, an annual travelling road show event that aims to educate travel agents on destinations in the Pacific. 11/05/2012 : Small tourism operators in Solomon Islands learn how to market via internet

Small tourism operators in the Solomon Islands from Honiara and Central Islands are learning to market their products through the internet. This training came about following a successful pilot project conducted in Tonga by the South Pacific Tourism Organization and the Tonga Visitors Bureau. The project aims to get as many accommodation providers as possible in the Solomon Islands set up with a professional e-commerce enabled web site which is able to process bookings instantly. This will be combined with channel management tools to enable third party distribution when they need it via sites such as Wotif, Booking.com and Expedia. Read more. Nadi's roadmap to recovery is progressing well, says Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Dr Ram Raju. Nadi Town the tourism hub in Fiji, was much cleaner and they were grateful to all stakeholders who pitched in to make it all possible. "Certain areas and few shops are yet to be completely cleaned out but by and large, the CBD is back in business," We are also seeing tourists in town which is a positive sign," said Dr Raju. New Zealand-owned Scenic Hotel Group will reopen a hotel in Tonga as part of a strategy to move into underdeveloped tourism markets in the Pacific. Next Monday it will launch the four-star Scenic Hotel Tonga on Tongatapu. Managing director Brendan Taylor sees endless potential for tourism in Tonga. He says it has the same sandy white atoll beaches and whale experiences as higher-profile destinations such as Fiji, and its outer islands are a spectacular secret. Read more. 27/04/2012 : First winners announced in Air Vanuatu Cruise Ship Campaign

An excited couple from New Zealand has been announced as the first winners of Air Vanuatu and the Vanuatu Tourism Office’s Wan dei ino naf! competition. Last month, Air Vanuatu and the VTO launched a campaign to attract cruise ship passengers to return to Vanuatu, using well placed signage, competitions and social media to promote cruise ship specials. “Rob and Shannon Bennett have been notified they are the first lucky winners and they are delighted,” Air Vanuatu Chief Executive Officer Joseph Laloyer said. The Wan dei ino naf! campaign is also promoting special airfares for cruise ship passengers. Mr. Laloyer said brochures had been handed out at the main wharf in Port Vila to alert the passengers to the campaign and a new website, with dedicated specials www.83islands.com. 27/04/2012 : Niue Sport Fishing Workshop concluded on Thursday 26

The two-week workshop organized by the Niue Tourism Office came to an end Thursday 19 April (see previous issue of Pulse Newsletter). The traditional end-of course barbeque, organized by NTO and the Niue Island Fisherman’s Association, was held at the Niue Golf Club and enjoyed by workshop organizers and participants. Prior to this, SPC trainer Michel Blanc and New Caledonia fishing guide Etienne Picquel debriefed participants following the second week’s fishing activities. Fifteen existing or prospective local guides took part in six half-day fishing trips from Saturday21 to Wednesday 25 April. The fishing techniques demonstrated were new to most participants (casting and jigging) and all trips but one landed some fish. Most importantly, participants could practice and enhance their skills in the key areas of sea safety, customer service, fishing gear maintenance and boat handling. With ongoing support from the Niue Tourism Office and the commitment of local guides to further strengthen their operation, Niue has potential to become a renowned blue water sport fishing destination. This workshop was funded by the Niue Tourism Office, SPC, the EU DevFish-2 project and SPTO.

27/04/2012 : Pacific advised to benefit from cruise ship boom

A regional tourism marketing group is advising Pacific Islands governments to ensure their wharf infrastructure is able to keep up with the growing cruise ship industry. The Pacific has benefitted from a global growth in the cruise ship industry, with a 17 percent rise in passenger visits in the region over the last five years. The South Pacific Tourism Organisation says Fiji, New Caledonia and Vanuatu get the most benefit from this increase. Its chief executive, Ilisoni Vuidreketi, says Pacific countries can be more active in putting together facilities that are able to accommodate the ships visitors. Read more. 27/04/2012 : P&O Cruises launches dedicated PNG sailings

P&O Cruises has added two dedicated cruise itineraries to Papua New Guinea for the 2013 season. Pacific Dawn will sail from Brisbane to Milne Bay where it will visit the local capital Alotau, Doini Island and the culturally-rich Trobriand Islands. Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, said the cruise line was excited to be sailing its first dedicated cruises to Papua New Guinea on a superliner. 'Papua New Guinea is one of the most remote and untouched corners of the world – although it’s close geographically, it’s a million miles away in terms of culture and scenery,' says Sherry. SPTO facilitated Cruise Tourism meeting in Port Villa, Vanuatu last weekend (April 21) between the local Cruise Tourism stakeholders in Villa and the senior official of Carnival Cruise Lines, Mr. Leon Sutcliffe. A second meeting was held in Luganville on the next day (April 22) between Mr. Sutcliffe and stakeholders in Luganville. Some interesting stats were given on Carnival’s itinerary for Vanuatu with projected growth in Cruise calls in 2013 over 2012 by Mr. Sutcliffe. 27/04/2012 : Air links between Tuvalu, Tonga, American Samoa discussed

During Flag Day celebrations this month, Gov. Togiola Tulafono was able to hold meetings with leaders of Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu on various issues of mutual interest, including air service that could benefit local businesses by using American Samoa as a shopping hub for residents and the government of Tuvalu. During discussions with Tuvalu governor-general Sir Iakoba Taeia Italeli, the official raised issues of trade and purchase of goods in American Samoa and the possibility of opening up direct service from American Samoa to Tuvalu, something that would greatly help the small island nation, said Togiola of the meeting. 20/04/2012 : Vanuatu, a playground for Jackie Chan’s new movie

Tourists travel to Vanuatu to relax and enjoy the country's island setting, but movie star Jackie Chan had different plans for his stay. Mr Chan arrived in Vanuatu last week and headed straight to the Yasur volcano in Tanna to film a scene for his next action blockbuster. Vanuatu Tourism Office former Trade and Events Officer, Joe Iautu, revealed to Radio Australia's Pacific Beat, just what the Chinese star planned for his stay in Vanuatu. The movie is going to be action packed and full of adrenalin pumping scenes. Mr Chan is just as fun off the camera as he is in his movies and all the movements, the tricks and smiles that he does in movies is still there with Jackie.” The VTO would like to thank Mr. Iautu, General Manager of Entani Limited, for his tremendous support in seeing that all of Jackie Chan’s film scenes were successfully completed. Jackie Chan was welcomed by Government delegates, the staff of VTO and members of the Vanuatu Chinese Association. The incredible experiences he had on Tanna and briefly here in Vila, will be treasured for life, commented Jackie Chan. 27/04/2012 : Cruise ship growth centres on Melanesia

Cruise ship schedules for the Pacific suggest just a fraction of the region is reaping the benefits of an increase in visitors. The number of passenger visits has grown by 17 percent since 2007 and is expected to reach 1.3 million by the end of the year. New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji are the main benefactors. The South Pacific Tourism Organisation says the first thing companies consider is the cost of fuel. Its chief executive, Ilisoni Vuidreketi, says more could be done to promote other destinations. “So that cruise company, they’ll be able to know that if you go to Tonga, Samoa, the berthing facilities available are like this and that. The sharing of this information is very important and also these island countries need to be more active in terms of putting together facilities that’s able to accommodate the visitors of these ships.” Ilisoni Vuidreketi says the cruise ship trade offers a good alternative for places like Kiribati which have great tourism products but are not easily accessible by air. 27/04/2012 : Niue to post live whale-frolicking on the web

Thousands of dollars worth of equipment is due to arrive in Niue next month for land-based whale watching platforms. Special coin-operated binoculars imported from the United States will be set up at six sites around the island in time to see the humpbacks which pass close to the island from mid-June on their southbound migration. Whale watching is one of Niue’s main tourist attractions and Hayden Porter of the Niue Tourism Board says there will also be webcams and eventually a device to listen to the whales’ underwater cries. Secretariat of the Pacific Community [SPC] in collaboration with SPTO and Niue Tourism conducted a two week Sport Fishing Development Workshop in Niue. SPTO and FAME (Fisheries, Aquaculture & Marine Ecosystems) Division of SPC have a common interest to develop community-based sport fishing in the tourism sector. The two organizations believed that coastal sport fishing is a potential niche market and its development in the region does not only require a gradual and careful approach, but also guidelines aimed at policy makers and prospective operators to follow and understand, the successful implementation of sport fishing operations. At the margins of the workshop, SPTO made a membership drive presentation to all tourism operators and stakeholders and also explained the current and future marketing and tourism development programs that will benefit Niue, especially in the Niche Market segment. The last ship to visit New Zealand this season for Carnival Australia – the biggest cruise liner company in Australasia – will be docked at Auckland’s Princes Wharf. Sea Princess will be the last of almost 400 Carnival ship visits to 12 New Zealand ports this season – more than double the number of visits than the previous season for the company and almost five times more than three years ago. P&O Cruises made a little bit of history over the weekend, with the arrival of Pacific Jewel at Mare in the Loyalty Islands (pictured below). Arriving on Sunday, Jewel became the first passenger ship to take cruisers to the undiscovered paradise in the Pacific Islands. Located north of New Caledonia, Mare rolled out the proverbial red carpet for guests- a new special jetty and boardwalk which allowed Jewel to dock, and provided guests with easy access to the Island’s beautiful clear waters. “Mare is one of the rare places on Earth that remains truly unspoiled,” said Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises. Royal Caribbean has released details of its 2013/14 Australia season with three liners to be positioned in local waters for the second consecutive season. The cruise line’s commercial manager Adam Armstrong said Royal Caribbean will be the largest company operating from Sydney over the next two summers. Rhapsody of the Seas will operate a 16-night Trans-Pacific Fiji and Samoa cruise from Honolulu to Sydney departing Hawaii on September 18 with the return leaving Sydney on April 18. 20/04/2012 : Vaka fleet will sail into Aitutaki

Aitutaki is preparing for the ceremonial arrival of the seven voyaging canoes in mid-May. Currently seven vaka – including Tahitian sister vaka Faafaite, – are crossing the Pacific, en route from the Galapagos and headed for the Tuamotus. Depending on weather and wind, they are due to make landfall in Aitutaki around May 10 or May 12. As the date looms nearer, Aitutaki mayor John Baxter, the Aitutaki contingent of the Cook Islands Voyaging Society and the island’s aronga mana are planning a greeting ceremony. Cook Islands Tourism and Air Rarotonga have confirmed that they will be contributing to the arrival ceremony.“We want to make the most of the media opportunity to present our country to the world,” Nick Henry said, adding that Air Rarotonga intends to take aerial photographs of the whole fleet coming into the harbour and sailing down the lagoon under traditional sail. Visitor arrivals in the first month of this year totalled 50,107 a 3.4 per cent increase over the previous year. The Fiji Bureau of Statistics said visitor numbers increased for China, New Zealand and Australia. China recorded 2749 from 1542 visitors in January, 2011 or an increase of 127.8 per cent. New Zealand visitors totalled 5661 from 4627 in January 2011. Australia, our main market increased arrivals by 2.2 per cent with 26,288 visitors. Read more. A new analysis by the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the University of Western Australia concluded that in 2010, shark-related diving contributed $42.2 million ($73 million Fijian) to the economy of Fiji. Shark-diving operations generated $4 million that year for Fijian communities through salaries and local levies. "This study clearly shows the role sharks and tourism play in the economy of Fiji," said Jill Hepp, manager of global shark conservation at the Pew Environment Group. "Fiji has a significant financial incentive to declare a shark sanctuary and solidify its reputation as one of the top diving destinations in the world." Read more. The movie is an upcoming Hong Kong action film produced, written, directed and starred by Jackie Chan. It is the sequel to the 1991 film “Armour of God II: Operation Condor”, in which Jackie will reprise his role as Asian Hawk. Organiser of tourist boat visits in the country Destination Solomon revealed that the three boats are M.V Spirit of Enderby from New Zealand, M.V Europa from Germany and Oceanic Discovery from Australia. M.V Spirit of Enderby was here mainly for bird watching and it visited Rennell Island, Makira, Honiara, and Kolombangara Islands. "The aim and objective of the tour is to look at various species of birds in Solomon Islands." M.V Europa was purposely to look at the natural beauty of the country and it visited Temotu, Santa Ana(Port Mary), Gizo (Kennedy island), Shortlands . And M.V Discovery visited Temotu, Santa Ana, Honiara, Central Islands, Arnavon Island and Gizo in Western Province. The boat was here mainly to look at WW2 relics in the country. The Vanuatu Tourism Office has been busy polishing up and adjusting the layout of the destination’s brand logo which consists of the red ‘Vanuatu’ brand script and the tagline ‘Discover what matters’. The objective of the adjustment to the layout of the logo as well as campaign artworks was to increase greater visibility and prioritize viewer’s focus on ‘Vanuatu’ as the brand, followed by the tagline, as viewed on above banner. The complete wrap up of all brand files included thorough search on the internet for downloadable brand fonts especially Omnes which initially was not free. Industry members would be delighted to know that they now can download Omnes here and use it accordingly to an updated brand Toolkit 15 which includes the final brand logo in its new layout. With this, the Vanuatu Tourism Office advises all who has a copy of Toolkit and Brand Guide 14 to delete the file and replace it with an updated version. Just drop in at the VTO with your flash drive for a copy of the latest Brand files including updated logo. The VTO is also excited to announce that all extra images (137 photos), which were briefly displayed to the industry during the VTO Campaigns & Branding presentation last month, have now all been touched up and are saved in high resolution, for industry members to use. This totals to 268 brand images that industry members can use freely in their marketing and promotional collaterals. Come to the office with a flash drive preferably 4GB, as the total Brand files size is 2GB. The Samoa Tourism Authority begins its Customer Services Training for the Tourism Sector. The trainings which go from 10-24 April 2012 are offered through a collaborative effort of the STA and NZ Government under its STSP (Samoa Tourism Support Programme). The Customer Services training is a result of a need that was recognised by the local tourism industry. The training has therefore been made possible through the Samoa Tourism Workforce Develop Plan 2010-2012 which is part of the STSP. It is in place to ensure that the training needs of the industry identified are noted and carried out. The Tourism Taskforce Team has therefore approved the Customer Services training to kick-start training on the training calendar and also run as a trialing stage to check whether the strategy that’s been used to offer training is in fact viable for all remaining trainings. The qualified trainer for this lot of training is Ms Robyne McLeod of New Zealand based Free Spirit-Training and Development Ltd. To ensure widespread coverage of these trainings, the trainings will take place at various locations:UPOLU: Faofao Beach Fales: 10-11 April, Hotel Millenia: 12-13 April, Aggie Grey’s Resort: 16-17 April, SAVAII: Savaiian Hotel: 18-19 April, Stevensons at Manase: 20-21 April, Va i Moana: 23-24 April. Each training group will consist of twenty (20) participants from both Upolu and Savaii. TPA’s Director Policy & Planning Jerry Agus said the program is part of a number of major projects identified for implementation under the Tourism Master Plan 2007-2017 and is aimed at developing an accommodation ratings system that is appropriate for PNG. 13/04/2012 : Tourist Numbers Increasing In Cook Islands

Australians are coming to the Cook Islands in increasing numbers, with the group spearheading an increase in visitor figures for February 2012. The number of Australians coming to Rarotonga in February this year is up by 29 percent compared to the same month last year, with the statistics office recording 771 inbound tourists from the country compared to 598 the year before. North American tourists are also coming to the Cooks in greater numbers than 2011, with the United States sending 9 percent more visitors and Canada sending 36 percent more. Together, the two North American countries represented about one-tenth of the Cook Islands’ inbound tourism for February. Their yearly average over the past year is closer to 6 percent market share. Niue Island is attempting a world first - luring a pop superstar to their country with the promise that an entire nation will attend her concert. In an ambitious move, the tiny island has invited the world’s biggest star to assist with the feat: Lady Gaga. The idea is the brainchild of Niue Tourism Development Manager Hayden Porter, who has gained the support of the people of Niue Island. “We saw Lady Gaga was coming to New Zealand on her Monster Ball Tour, and we have so many fans here that we thought, how great would it be if she came to Niue?” says Porter. “We know it’s a crazy idea, but we figure that Lady Gaga is crazy enough that she may just go for it.” Niue Tourism has sent Lady Gaga’s record label executives and tour promoters a letter of invitation for Lady Gaga and is also attempting to spread the news via social media. The latest weather forecast indicates that we have a slight break in the weather today [2nd April 2012] although there will be periods of heavy rain with fresh and gusty north west winds. With a tropical cyclone warning now in place for all of Fiji we will constantly monitor the weather and sea conditions throughout the day and may at short notice change or alter our schedules. Any decision regarding today's operating schedule is weather dependent and the safety of passengers and vessels is paramount. The following schedule is planned to operate:

1) 'Tiger 4' will depart at 9:00am Monday morning for inbound only passengers, collecting passengers from all Mamanuca Islands. There will be no passengers departing from Denarau Marina for the islands on any of our services.

2) 'Tiger 4' will depart at approximately 1:00pm Monday afternoon for inbound only passengers, collecting passengers from the Yasawa Islands. 'Tiger 4' will go directly to Octopus Resort and then return, collecting south-bound passengers from resorts south of Octopus to Denarau Marina.

3) 'Yasawa Flyer' will depart at 8:30am Monday morning for inbound only passengers, collecting passengers from the Yasawa Islands. 'Yasawa Flyer' will go directly to Nacula / Tavewa / Nanuya Lailai Islands and collect inbound passengers proceeding south down to and including Mantaray / Barefoot before returning to Denarau Marina.

4) All Day Cruises have been cancelled for Monday 02 April.

5) Due to the effect of the tropical low pressure systems and the resulting cancellation of services, our Terms and Conditions will apply for any changes to travel plans and additional expense.

The SPTO is implementing the Pacific Regional Tourism Capacity Building Programme (PTRCBP), which is funded by the European Union under the 10th EDF. Within the framework of this 3-year project, the SPTO will carry out a number of activities in beneficiary countries across the South Pacific region. For these activities, the Organisation will require technical assistance and related professional services.
To enable the SPTO to build up a register of consulting companies and individuals who wish to be considered for forthcoming invitations to submit proposals for various assignments, we invite expressions of interest for the following broad areas of work.

1.         Development and promotion of the cruise shipping sector in the South Pacific
            including production of a South Pacific Cruise Shipping Manual
2.         Technical assistance in tourism statistics collection, compilation and
            online dissemination including training of NTO/national statistics office staff
3.         Design, implementation, analysis and report production of visitor surveys
            including cruise passenger surveys
4.         Niche tourism market research studies
5.         Tourism SME support and development including market access facilitation,
            website development and e-marketing training
6.         Preparation of a South Pacific regional tourism training needs analysis and HRD
            plan
7.         Organisational review of the South Pacific Tourism Organisation
8.         Travel photography of island countries in the region with a view to compiling
            image libraries for the SPTO and beneficiary NTOs including data-basing the

Upmarket SeaDream Yacht Club’s continuing search for unique new destinations for its boutique vessels could soon spread to Australia. Buoyed by the growing number of passengers wanting to sail the Amazon and circumnavigate the Black Sea the company is looking for a possible third mega-cruiser to join the award-winning SeaDream I and II. And the first hint has come that it could be based in Asia/Australia because of the enthusiastic way Australians have embraced the yachting lifestyle. SeaDream’s President, Bob Lepisto, on a sales visit to Australia this month, said that bookings by Australians in 2012 were 40 per cent more than in 2011. The tiny South Pacific Island of Nauru, known for its spectacular beaches and obese residents (see photo below), unveiled a slick new marketing campaign designed to boost tourism yesterday. There are so many fishing options at Christmas Island in Kiribati, that there is something for everyone to enjoy. The once a week flight to and from Honolulu is a quick 3 hour interisland hop and very convenient for Oahu residents. The people of Kiritimati are really friendly and nice. The Adventure Dive and Fishing lodge is an accommodating facility with a friendly staff and excellent guides. Our first trip to kayak fish at Christmas Island (Kiritimati) was a remarkable and enjoyable experience. We learned a lot about Kiritimati and made several new friends. Since 2008, 15,000 km² of this lagoon have been added to the prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. New Caledonia thus forms part of a very select list of countries possessing “natural phenomena” recognized of their “exceptional, universal and invaluable” character, a key factor in the quest to protect the lagoon and develop a tourism of high quality. 30/03/2012 : Move Over Batman – Niue Lights up the Pacific

An international agency is planning on using the tiny Pacific Island of Niue as the test location for a new advertising technology called ‘Cloud Painting’. The technology uses high powered spotlights with logos attached to the lights to project shapes onto a cloud filled night sky. Much in the same way the ‘Bat Signal’ lights up the skies over Gotham City, the testing of this technology will point the way to this Pacific Paradise and will be seen by thousands. Starting from April 1st, promotion for Tahiti and her islands in France, Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland will be handled by Aviareps, one of the world leading specialist in tourism and air carriers representation. Following the objectives of cost efficiency and operational performance set by the government, Tahiti Tourisme continues its outsourcing of some of its offices worldwide. 05/04/2012 : Samoa Sets Celebrate Samoa Program On Fire

Turning up the heat for the Celebrate Samoa 2012 program will be the 11th International Siva Afi (Fire Knife Dancing) Competition, to be held in Apia from the 24th – 26th May. Regarded as the world’s second longest running competition, the Siva Afi is an integral element of the Samoan culture. Dating back hundreds of years, the Siva Afi is a Samoan warrior’s demonstration of his battle prowess through the artful twirling of his weapon, often a war club or a machete. During night time performances of this ritual the ends of the poles and weapons are set to flame creating a spectacular and mesmerizing performance. Dancers will twirl and do acrobatic stunts to the beat of Samoan drumbeats. The complexity of the moves can often result in injury and many performers have been reported to have denied medical treatment for their injuries as a demonstration of their ferocity, strength and valour. 05/04/2012 : Cash injection from Survivor (Samoa)

Aggie Grey’s Lagoon Resort and Spa has 20 new exclusive spa villas under construction. General Manager Giovanni Rossi says the resort needed to expand. ‘With 140 deluxe oceanview rooms in the inventory, running at 90% occupancy, and clients wanting a traditional Samoan feel to the rooms, we have started construction on the new villas.’ Rossi explains that even though the latest Survivor series filmed, the second time at Aggie Grey’s, caused disruption to the market, the cash injection received was being used to build the new villas. All will have garden views, built fale style with European bathroom fittings and a private outdoor jacuzzi. Expected completion date is December this year and Rossi says rates are still being reviewed, but will be available through wholesalers. Progress on the Edgewater Resort & Spa’s new-look village experience is really underway now with new signs on all room blocks, with each block adopting an island of the Cook Islands. New signs also have been erected for the Brasserie Restaurant, Spa & Salon, Conference Room, Activities Hut & Umu Hut, giving guests a real sense of our Village and being part of the Cook Islands and its cultural experience. The layout of the property reflects the actual topography of the Cook Islands i.e. Southern Group islands on the Southern side of the property and Northern Group islands on the Northern side. 05/04/2012 : Cruise ship to stop by Aitutaki and Palmerston

The Hanseatic is one of four Hapagg Lloyd line ships that visit the Cook Islands regularly. She is a true expedition ship and as such visits places that most large cruise ships cannot. On this visit she will call into Rarotonga, Aitutaki and Palmerston Island. For the people of Palmerston this is a life saver, as the first ship to call in some time through the agents Cruise Cook Islands. The ship has been asked to take some essential supplies as well as a relief nurse and medical equipment for the island’s small hospital. Telecommunications have been down for some weeks and the MV Hanseatic is carrying replacement equipment for Telecom to get the phones and internet working again. The captain has also agreed to take over 1500kg of food stuffs to keep the island going until the next ship. Some of this was loaded in Rarotonga with the rest being loaded in Aitutaki along with two officials from customs and immigration to clear the ship safely out of the Cook Islands when the one-day visit to Palmerston is over. All of this has been organised by Cruise Cook Islands and done free of charge by the Hapagg Lloyd line cruise. (Source: Cook Islands News Online 03 April 2012)

Due to the popularity of the webinars, the corporation is asking people to express their interest for only one webinar in the 2012-13 series on a topic relevant to their business. 05/04/2012 : Fiji Resorts Open for Business After Weather Passes

Fiji’s tourism has quickly returned to “business as usual,” with the Fiji Hotel & Tourism Association reporting that most major resorts and hotels have already resumed full operations in time to welcome international guests for a busy and beautiful Easter holiday in Fiji. “As regular visitors to Fiji know, the country is extremely resilient and once storms or rains pass, Fiji is back to normal in a matter of days,” said Fijian Permanent Secretary Ms. Elizabeth Powell. Cyclone Daphne, and its associated winds and rain have passed Fiji by, and weather in Fiji is improving on an hourly basis. Following the weekend’s flooding, major hotels and resorts have reported damage only to some vegetation. As part of the provincial budget, Temotu provincial government has allocated more than $400,000 to construct a tourism centre at the provincial headquarter, Lata. Fr Beu said setting up the tourism centre is one way to promote the industry in the province. 05/04/2012 : Australian Agents Shape Samoa’s Tourism Future

Twenty of Australia’s top product managers and senior agents recently returned from the Fa’a Samoa Roadshow in Samoa. They were joined by their contemporaries from New Zealand and Europe. The roadshow opened with a ceremonial welcome that consisted of traditional songs and dancing as well as the spectacular Siva Afi or Fire Knife dance as well as a Tatau (tattoo) demonstration from the locals at the Samoa Tourism Authority fale. Opening the roadshow with his speech, The Hon Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi shared his futuristic vision of the tourism industry in Samoa, stressing the importance for tourism operators to embrace new technology and to ride the wave of the future with his message of working "on target, online and on time."
