Effective Monday 06 July 2009 Solomon Airlines will be opening its own fully dedicated Australian Reservation & Sales office located at Brisbane International Airport. With the opening of this office; Solomon Airlines also welcome aboard two new staff members to our Australian team joining Mike Ridge; Operations Manager and the undersigned. Janine Watson (Picture: Left) has been employed in the role of Reservations & Sales Supervisor. Janine has extensive experience working previously with Qantas, Malaysian Airlines and Singapore Airlines. 03/07/2009 : Availability Partners with Westpac in the Pacific

Availability has partnered with Westpac Bank’s Pacific Banking Division to promote ResBook, the online, real time reservation system for accommodations in seven Pacific Island countries. After launches in Vanuatu and Papa New Guinea, Availability turned up the volume on the promotion in Fiji at the Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange, the largest tourism mart in the South Pacific. John Cashmore, Westpac General Manager in Fiji commented on the success of the event and its importance to the tourism industry in the South Pacific. During the three-day event over 30 properties signed up to ResBook which is a hugely successful result. “We are thrilled at the success we have had with ResBook through out the South Pacifici. It is great to see the accommodations so keen to make use of on-line technology to help drive bookings. ResBook coupled with WestPac is a match made in heaven for them.” said John Hayson, Managing Director of Availability. 03/07/2009 : PATA Micronesia Chapter 2nd Tri-Annually Meeting Announcement

The PATA Micronesia Chapter will hold its 2nd Tri-Annual meeting in the Republic of the Marshall Islands on July 13-14, 2009. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the 11th Micronesia Chief Executives and 9th Presidents’ Summits, scheduled for July 13-17, 2009. The PATA Micronesia Chapter was identified by the government leaders as the vehicle for regional tourism promotions and marketing therefore leads the Regional Tourism Committee. 03/07/2009 : Tourism Fiji says Vinaka Vakalevu for New Zealand Industry Tourism Support

Tourism Fiji CEO Josefa Tuamoto made a flying visit to Auckland last week to personally thank key members of the New Zealand travel industry for their ongoing efforts in helping to promote the destination. Speaking at a function at the Stamford Plaza Auckland Hotel, Mr Tuamoto paid tribute to his NZ industry colleagues for the “professional and sympathetic approach” they have taken with Fiji throughout 2009. “We are extremely grateful for the support our industry colleagues have applied during what can only be described as a difficult first six month period,” he said. “But our Kiwi numbers are coming back and we are confident with the continued efforts of our New Zealand industry colleagues, particularly the airlines and wholesalers, we will reach our target of 120,000 Kiwi visitors within the next two years.” Mr Tuamoto also took the opportunity at the function to launch the national tourist office’s newest trade DVD. 03/07/2009 : Air Vanuatu Announces Major Sponsorship for 2010 Vanuatu Swims

Following on from the success of this year’s Vanuatu Swims, which saw an increase in visitor arrivals for the events, Air Vanuatu has confirmed its continued major sponsorship for the 2010 Vanuatu and Espiritu Santo Aore Ocean Swims. Dates for next year’s Vanuatu Swims are, Vanuatu Ocean Swim Port Vila, Saturday 12th June with the Espiritu Santo Aore Swim to be held on Tuesday 15th June. The ever popular Canoe Race across the Segond Channel from Aore Resort to Unity Park will precede the swim on Monday 14th June. Other sponsors to confirm so far for next year include The Melanesian Port Vila, Coconut Palms and Aore Resort. Promotion for the 2010 Vanuatu Swims will commence immediately through the Pacific Swims website and e-news. Interest in Vanuatu’s two international swim events is on the increase with enquiries already coming in for next year’s dates from people wanting to plan holidays around the 2010 swims. This year’s Vanuatu Swims attracted around 200 overseas visitors to Vanuatu from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and USA, with many returnees and more people than ever staying longer, some coming a week before the event and others staying on afterwards to experience Vanuatu’s varied attractions and choosing from the whole range of accommodation options and tours on Efate, Espiritu Santo and Tanna. Espiritu Santo and Tanna in particular saw a big increase in the number of visitors for the swims with resorts, bungalow accommodation, tour companies, bars and restaurants benefiting from the influx of swimmers and travelling family and friends. 03/07/2009 : Tourism Sector Adaptation to Climate Change in the South Pacific

Partners in the Ocerania Sustainable Tourism Alliance (OSTA) are supporting an AusAID funded Research project on Tourism Sector Adaptation to Climate Change in the South Pacific. The 3 year project will be led by The Centre for Tourism and Services Research, Victoria University (Melbourne) in collaboration with leading Natural Hazard Sciences, Climate Change and Sustainable Tourism research expertise from the University of New South Wales and the University of the South Pacific. "It's encouraging to see AusAID seriously being involved in the region's biggest economic driver, tourism’ said Lelei Lelaulu from Apia, Samoa. Lelei is Chair of OSTA Founding Partner, the Foundation for the People of the Pacific International. He added: ‘It’s significant and greatly appreciated that AusAID is willing to fund this vital research project for the greatest challenge and danger that Pacific Islanders mankind have ever faced to their livelihoods and most important industry sector.’ ‘The overall aim of the project is to develop effective climate change adaptation policies and strategies for the Pacific Island tourism sector to protect and grow local livelihoods’ said Professor Terry de Lacy, Victoria University (Melbourne) and a Founding Partner of the Oceania Sustainable Tourism Alliance. 03/07/2009 : Vanuatu Ocean Swimmer Donates to Vila Central Hospital

David Smith and his wife, Gayle, own a retail garden store called "Smithies" The plantsmith of Waiuku, which has been operating for 29 years in a small town called Waiuku about 70 Km out of Auckland New Zealand. In 2007 they came to Vanuatu on holiday and Gayle, who has kidney disease, fell ill and was treated at the Vila Central Hospital. This was what made them realize the needs of the Port Vila Hospital. On their return home they placed a collection box on their shop counter and began putting small coins in it, with paying customers often putting some change in there as well. A handful of customers donated up to NZ$40.00, and the Smiths and Waiuku community organized smaller fund raisers to complement the collection box, which they hope to repeat next year in 2010. This year, David Smith returned to Vanuatu to participate in the Vanuatu Oceans Swims and also have the opportunity to donate some money they collected over the previous two years. The donation was made during the Vanuatu Ocean Swims awards presentation on June 13, where Mr. Smith generously handed over ND$700.00 and an additional 5,000vatu, from one of the Ocean Swimmers who heard of the cause, to Mrs Annie Niatu, Vanuatu Tourism Office General Manager, on behalf of the Vila Central Hospital. Mrs Niatu then handed over the donation to Mrs Leipakoa Matariki, Vila Central Hospital Manager, and on receiving the money, Mrs Matariki explained that the donation will be used as part of upgrading VCH’s outpatient department. Mrs Gayle Smith is now on the short list to commence dialysis soon, and hopefully a kidney replacement in due course. The Vila Central Hospital sincerely thanks the Smiths family and Waiuku community, in New Zealand, for their donation and support, and acknowledges that the money received will be for a worthy cause. 03/07/2009 : Vanuatu.travel Sky Rockets to 14,000 Visits in May from 500 in April

The month of May experienced an exponential rise in traffic for the new Vanuatu Travel website as a result of the website name change over from www.vanuatutourism.com to Vanuatu.travel which referred visits directly to the new Vanuatu.travel website. Google analytics show that there have been a whopping rise from only 499 visits in April, to 14,731 visits in May, and 12,000 out of the 14,731 visits are unique visits which are people surfing the internet and being referred to the new website for the first time. In April, 2,501 pages were viewed, and in May, number of pages viewed sky rocket up to 82,643!! Traffic sources that have sent 14,731 visits to Vanuatu.travel include direct traffic = 1,861 visits, who are people directly typing www.vanuatu.travel into the web address box, from seeing the new website URL in advertisements and news publications, referring sites = 2,657 visits, and the most popular source is via Search engines which have sent 10,213 visits to Vanuatu.travel from typing Vanuatu, Vanuatu tourism, Vanuatu islands, and Vanuatu island as the top keywords. The website will improve further in placement and ranking once all required tools, SEO meta data, and online features have been added into the website. (Source: VTO)

26/06/2009 : Tourism Fiji Serves Up Fiji Women’s Volleyball Sponsorship

The Fiji Women’s Volleyball team has recently returned from South Korea where it qualified for the next round of the 2010 FVB World Volleyball Championships. The team took time last week to visit Tourism Fiji in Nadi to personally thank the national tourist office for its ongoing support of the sport. 26/06/2009 : January - April 2009 Visitor Arrivals

International visitor arrivals to Papua New Guinea from (Jan – April) this year show an increase of 2 percent compared to the same period last year. This increase was due mainly to a positive growth in arrivals from countries and regions including Japan, Europe, Germany, New Zealand, America, and Asia. There was a much lower growth in the first quarter, but picked up well in the fourth month to set this healthy trend. The significant increase in total visitor arrivals to the country continued the positive trend that has been visible for the last five years

26/06/2009 : April 2009 International Highlights for Samoa

Total visitor arrivals for April 2009 10,263 up by 16.7 percent compared to a total of 8,792 in April 2008 10 percent increase in total arrivals from American Samoa from 3,199 to 3,522. a significant 23 percent increase in total arrivals from New Zealand from 3,550 to 4,344 an increase of 14 percent in the total arrivals from Australia from 1,476 to 1,687. Visitor arrivals from USA also increase by a significant 34.5 percent visiting friends and relatives down by 12 percent compared to December 2007. NZ has shown significant growth in holiday, vfr and business at 25.8 percent, 24.4 percent and 19.1 percent respectively while other purpose of travel decreased by 16.7 percent. a substantial increase of 20 percent for holiday makers for the year ending December 2008 compared to year ending December 2007. VFR market arrival for Australia increased by 58 percent. Both holiday and vfr markets increased by 16.3 percent and 30.2 percent respectively compared to the same month of 2008 while business and other purpose decrease for the month under review. 26/06/2009 : Kiribati Visitors Up for first quarter 2009

Kiribati National Tourism Office is pleased to inform you that Kiribati visitors for the first quarter (January up to March), 2009, has an increase of 11.03 percent. The increase comes from the Tarawa visitors of 38.4 percent while Kiritimati (Christmas Island) 21.18 percent. Out of the three month comparison March was a high peak where Tarawa had 106.4 percent and Kiritimati (Christmas Island) 95.19 percent. Majority of them came from Australia, USA, Japan and other pacific countries for the following purposes: business matters, game fishing, other leisure activities. 26/06/2009 : Figures show visitors arrivals are growing

Despite the economic downturn Solomon Islands has recorded a good number of visitors arriving in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau General Manager Michael Tokuru said the total visitor arrival in the first quarter of 2009 grew by 44 percent to 4,273 compared to 2,973 visitors in the first quarter of 2008. Out of the total holiday travelers ((tourists) grew by 28 percent to 1,047 visitors while business travelers grew by 34 percent to 1,767 visitors in the first quarter of 2009. He said the figures might be small but it indicates tourism is growing. Chief Executive of south-pacific.travel Tony Everitt said Solomon Islands must be congratulated for the achievements. Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority has recently completed its first Europe Sales Blitz. The successful Sales Blitz was conducted in Germany (Berlin/Munich), Czech Republic (Prague), Italy (Milano), Austria (Vienna), Switzerland (Zurich), Belgium (Brussels) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam). The main objective of the trip was to meet Travel Agents and Tour Operators to create awareness and stimulate interest of PNG as an adventure Destination. As a follow up, Industry members from Europe will be invited to PNG for famils in 2009 to broaden their knowledge on the tourism products and the destination. 22/06/2009 : Tourism Fiji Appoints New Marketing Services Manager

Tourism Fiji has announced the appointment of Ms Adeline Lee-Erasito to the key role of Marketing Services Manager. Tourism Fiji CEO Josefa Tuamoto said Ms Lee-Erasito will take full managerial responsibility for all aspects of the organisation’s marketing activity in Japan, Hong Kong, China, South Korea and India. Her role will also include handling Tourism Fiji’s international media visitation program as well as taking responsibility for the further building of the destination’s wedding and honeymoon, MICE [Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions], sports and special events portfolios. Mr Tuamoto said Ms Lee-Erasito’s appointment was extremely timely given the advent of Continental Micronesia Airlines’ new services ex-Japan to Nadi. Air Tahiti Nui is giving Australians a chance to escape the winter cold. Tahiti Travel Connection and Tahiti Tourisme are offering new packages to French Polynesia. The "Seconds to the Sand" promotion includes return Economy Class airfares from Sydney to Tahiti. Australian tourists will spend five nights at the Sofitel Tahiti Maeva Beach Resort. The polls are now open for the first round of Tahiti Tourisme's "Invest In Your Love" video contest, which will award the first of six trips to Tahiti and Her Islands. The contest was launched in April, inviting people to submit a video "on why they need and deserve an escape to the islands of Tahiti". More than 25 original videos have been approved for voting - from heart warming and sentimental to wacky and offbeat, they all make a plea for a trip to Tahiti. The Hospitality Tourism Leisure Training Centre saw around 40 people who gathered to witness a fine presentation of chocolate and pastry delights which about 20 students including members of the industry, under took a 2 weeks course on how to prepare, cook, bake, and serve/present chocolate and pastry dishes. Tourism Fiji and Pacific Blue celebrated the start up of the airline’s direct services ex-Melbourne and the soon to commence Adelaide services with a ‘one night stand’ for a select group of 30 Victorian and South Australian travel agents and wholesalers in Fiji. 16/06/2009 : Pacific trade data publication launched

The Asian Development Bank has launched a new quarterly publication about trade data and research on Pacific economies. Economist Milovan Lucich from the ADB’s Sydney office says the Pacific Economic Monitor publication provides real time information on member countries in the region and pulls together trade and economic figures. Mr Lucich says the ADB wanted a snapshot of how the region is faring and provide policy specific advice to Pacific countries during a recession. “What we’ve tried to do in this publication is bring together a lot of data from a lot of different country sources,” he said. A new fashion trend is catching on with visitors -- with a motorbike rental business set to revolutionalise adventure tourism in the way Waisale Serevi rewrote the sevens rugby history book. It took six years for the owners of Westside Motorbike Rentals, in Nadi, Fiji to secure permits for a scooter hire business. The journey through every paper jungle imaginable, is now bearing fruit. The business was formed in 1999 by Anand Achari and father Muthu, and now joined by his wife Beatrice Nasti. Tourists on yellow scooters can be seen on roads along the tourism hub evidence that the mode of transport is becoming a popular way to see the countryside. "We promote our business because it saves money, saves time and saves fuel. All the bikes assembled in our shop operate under our trade name, Kool Scoots," Ms Nasti said. More entries have been confirmed in the last few days for both the Vanuatu Ocean Swim to be held on Saturday 13th June and the Espiritu Santo Aore Swim on Tuesday 16th June, with swimmers now beginning to arrive for the 3.2km and 1.5km events in Port Vila harbour and for the challenging 2.6km swim across the Segond Channel from Lugaville’s Unity Park to Aore Resort on Espiritu Santo. The Virgin Blue Group is the first Australian operator to join a growing list of airlines and international non-profit Climate Group, working to develop a way of tackling aviation emission as part of a global deal on climate change. Virgin Blue Airlines comprises Australian domestic carrier Virgin Blue, V Australia, New Zealand-based Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue, a joint venture airline with the Samoan Government. The AGD Group (Aviation Global Deal) seeks to develop a standardised, industry-based, recommendation on a mechanism for tackling carbon dioxide emission. The group’s proposal, which was shared with climate change negotiators at a UN side event in Germany, in April, marks the first time aviation companies have made recommendations to UN officials. 16/06/2009 : Solomons increases MICE Market Share

The Solomon Islands continues to make waves as an exotic destination for conferences, with the tiny South Pacific nation recording increased business traveler arrivals from Australia. Thanks to new Pacific Blue flights from Brisbane and increased awareness in the Australian market through public relations and marketing activity. the Solomon Islands recorded a 44 per cent increase in visitor arrivals in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the corresponding period in 2008. Total visitor arrivals by air grew to 4,273 visitors compared with 2,973 visitors in the first quarter of 2008. Business traveler numbers grew by 34 per cent to 1,767 visitors in the first quarter of 2009, while leisure was up 28 per cent to 1,047 visitors. Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau General Manager, Michael Tokuru, said international visitor arrivals increases were primarily from Australia. The annual Bula Tourism Exchange has grown in popularity over the years as wholesalers and tourism operators find conducive conditions to take their business forward, says Air Pacific boss John Campbell. Mr Campbell said the airline had been a major support of the event which is held at Denarau. The airline was flying in many travel agents and tour wholesalers from overseas. "We do it so they can negotiate their rates and marketing plans for the coming year," he said. Backpacker resorts are doing well despite the global economic crisis. Smugglers Cove sales manager, Shalvin Shanil yesterday said such crisis does not affect people who have a keen interest or passion for travelling and seeing places. 08/06/2009 : Cruise liner arrivals up

There's a huge potential for cruise visitors to Fiji after a 613 per cent jump in arrivals last year compared to 2007. The figures released by the Bureau of Statistics show 17,371 cruise visitors arrived in Fiji in 2008 compared to 2435 in 2007. In 2006, there were no cruise liners visiting our ports. Cruise shipping is becoming more ideal for international travellers because it is cheaper than airline travel and they get to visit many countries on a trip. Tourism Fiji chairman Patrick Wong said cruise shipping was an important component of the tourism industry but there was a need to further develop attractions such as shopping and eco-tours. "We need to have more sites, new adventures and more activities for tourists to interact with our people," Mr Wong said. "Our biggest asset is our people. "We are looking at working more with people in remote areas and showcase that Fiji is not only sun, sea and sand." In the South Pacific, cruise ship visitors are estimated to have spent about $63billion between 2007 and 2008. The countries to have received the most cruise visits were French Polynesia, Vanuatu and Kiribati. Exploring the spirit, life and challenges of contemporary Pacific people is what the Pacific Storms Exhibition is all about. From June 3 to July 12, about 30 artists from around the Pacific including Fiji, Papua New Guinea, French Polynesia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tonga, New Caledonia, Rotuma and artists based in New Zealand and Australia will showcase their work at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery in Australia in an effort to draw away from mainstream stereotypes of what Pacific art is and who its people are. Setting a platform of contemporary creativity integrating real issues of the modern Pacific society, Pacific Storms will exhibit 50 artworks by leading Pacific artists. Created by Beyond Pacific Art with Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery, Pacific Storms aims to challenge perceptions while questioning our understanding of Australia's closest neighbours, the Pacific Islands. 08/06/2009 : Japan promises tour groups

Japanese tour groups could begin visiting the Cook Islands as early as July if a new move to promote the destination to Japanese tourists is a success. Cook Island Tourism and Turama Pacific Travel Group welcomed a visit by a senior director of the Japanese Travel Agents Association this week. Tourism chief executive officer John Dean and Robert Skews were in Japan recently and invited Jungo Kikuma to the Cooks. Kikuma arrived on Saturday for a six-day visit to look at what the Cooks have to offer potential tour groups from Japan. Kikuma is the president of World Air-Sea Service Co Ltd (WAS), one of the most successful travel companies in Japan with extensive tourism and group travel operations to East and Southern Africa, Fiji and Tahiti in particular. Kikuma is a senior director of JATA (Japanese Travel Agents Association) and one of the most powerful travel and tourism figures in the Japanese travel industry. “Cook Islands Tourism in conjunction with the Turama Pacific Group (Island Hopper) are committed to opening up new markets for the Cook Islands and although the numbers of visitors may initially be small, these numbers will grow over time and markets such as Japan, China and India will become more important to our destination in the years to come,” says Dean. 07/06/2009 : Thirty-nine US travel agents invited in French Polynesia

From May 31 to June 6, 39 US travel agents will be visiting Tahiti and Her Islands. The Tahiti Tourisme board and Air Tahiti Nui teamed up to organize this trip. This "familiarization trip" is also organized with the Signature travel network. The three main US tour-operators selling Tahiti and Her Islands, Classic Vacation, Pleasant Holidays, Tahiti Legends, are also involved in this program. The Signature travel network gathers 6,000 professionals working in the field of tourism. These 39 travel agents have been carefully selected and have pledged to share their knowledge with other agents back in the United States. Majuro will play host this summer to two regional summits that will bring an estimated 100 participants to discuss regional economic and environmental issues of mutual concern and cooperation. In April, President Litokwa Tomeing's administration approved the Republic of Marshall Islands [RMI's] hosting of the 9th Micronesian Presidents' Summit and the 11th Micronesian Chief Executives Summit, which are scheduled to take place from July 13 to the 17. The summits will bring to Majuro heads of state and chief executives from Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianan Islands. 04/06/2009 : Tahitian Government satisfied by Princess Cruises' program in French Polynesia

Princess Cruises Senior Vice-President Anthony Kaufman met last week in Papeete French Polynesia President Oscar Temaru and minister of Tourism Jacqui Drollet. They discussed Princess Cruises programs for French Polynesia in the months to come. One of Princess Cruises' ships, the 670-passenger Tahitian Princess, was based in Papeete since December 2002 and left the French Polynesian waters in December 2008. The ship has now been renamed the Ocean Princess. But starting Sept. 28, another Princess Cruises' ship, the Pacific Princess will return to French Polynesia for eight new cruises. This program could bring up to 5400 passengers in French Polynesia. Furthermore, the Royal Princess will have 10 cruises in French Polynesia in 2010. For the two following years, in 2011 and 2012, the Royal Princess will have at least 11 cruises each year. Tourism minister Jacqui Drollet explained that the French Polynesian government was willing to change its tax program to help cruise ships to come to Tahiti. Air Kiribati in partnership with the Kiribati National Tourism Office has recently launched its first “weekend escape” package to the outer islands. The first organized trip was to the island of Abemama with 19 people on the tour. Though most of them were expatriates living in Tarawa, the group included people from the New York and Denmark! The feedback from the weekend was very positive. Air Kiribati and the KNTO will be soon looking at trips to Butaritari and other locations such as Majuro in the near future. The third “France-Oceania” summit between the French President and the Pacific Islands Forum leaders has been scheduled to take place in Nouméa on July 31, 2009,. Attending the summit is part of Mr Sarkozy’s first trip to the Pacific region since his election in May 2007. The France-Oceania summit will focus on strengthening ties between France, its three Pacific territories (New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna) and the Pacific Islands Forum, in what is recurrently described as a process of “regional integration”. 12/05/2009 : Solomon Airlines Brings in Airbus 320-200 Aircraft

Solomon Airlines will get its Airbus 320-200 aircraft in August this year. This follows the signing of an agreement between the national career and Strategic Airlines of Australia, which will lease the plane operating on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Brisbane to Honiara with a direct return service to Brisbane at prime times. “This is an exciting time for the airlines to fulfill its promises to the Solomon Islands public by engaging in such important arrangement,” Mr Tyson said. Last week Tourism Fiji bolstered its presence on the New Zealand weddings and honeymoon scene with nationwide series of 'Romance Me' workshops. Tourism Fiji chief executive officer Jo Tuamoto said the marketing campaign was to ensure that Fiji was still top in tourists' minds in the New Zealand market." Fiji will draw top marketing mileage from two episodes being shot here for a US reality television show. The show is aired in the US Home and Gardens Television (HGTV) show and draws an average of about 1-1.5 million viewers for its new episodes. This is an excellent opportunity for Fiji, aside from employment opportunities, they also boost economic activity explained Ms Swamy of the Fiji Audio Visual Commission. She added that a lot of scenic footage would be filmed and shown on the two shows and these would present Fiji as a striking tourist destination and a great film production location. 12/05/2009 : Nanihi Bambridge crowned Miss Polynesia

18-year-old Nanihi Bambridge is Miss Polynesia. This new beauty contest took place Sunday 03 May night in Tahiti, consisting of eleven candidates aged from 17 to 24. This new beauty contest was created by former Miss Tahiti beauty pageants, highlighting traditional dresses and hats. Miss Polynesia will participate in the next Miss Universe contest. Ina Pater has been elected Miss Tourism and will take part in an international beauty pageant this year in China. While this was Miss Polynesia's first edition, Miss Tahiti's 49th edition is due in a few days in Tahiti. Miss Tahiti should then take part in the Miss France beauty contest next December. 12/05/2009 : Schools will get opportunity to learn basic hospitality skills

Secondary and basic high schools around Efate will have the opportunity to offer their students the skills of displaying basic hospitality as part of promoting tourism development in Vanuatu. This was made possible through a kind donation from Jonathan Law from Hawkes Law, friend and supporter of the Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Training Center (HTLTC). Mr Law purchased eleven of the self-paced and self-directed learning video on Napkin Folding, which was produced by the center in promotion to what they offer as short courses. Mr Law said “The tourism industry is one of the growing areas in this country and providing employment opportunities for students in secondary level as a way to promote this country’s reputation as a great tourism destination. 12/05/2009 : Samoa prepares for record season

Samoa is expecting a 100 per cent increase in both vessels and cruise visitors in 2009. With the recent upgrading of the Matautu wharf facilities in the capital of Apia, even the world’s largest cruise ships can now tie up, as demonstrated when the Queen Victoria visited in February. The increase in vessels and numbers equates to more than double last year’s figures for Samoa. Dwayne Bently, marketing and promotions manager of Samoa Tourism Authority, attributed the surge to “vigorous marketing and promotion by various government and industry bodies over the last few years at various international trade shows. Nauru’s national carrier Our Airline has named a new chief executive Mr. Karam Chand to head up its rapidly expanding operation. Mr Chand has recently been working as Virgin Blue Airlines’ Head of Commercial (International) division, where he has spent the past nine years contributing to that airline’s expansion into the Pacific region. His appointment comes after Our Airline’s recent acquisition of a second aircraft to service the Norfolk Air routes and the prospect of successful negotiations with Kiribati and Fiji to enable the airline to resume the Tarawa - Majuro - Fiji service. 11/05/2009 : FAA praised for Pacific airport improvements

Marshall Islands Transportation Minister Kenneth Kedi has praised the U.S Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its contribution to airport safety improvements in Micronesia. Speaking at a regional aviation conference in Majuro, Mr Kedi thanked the FAA for the funds it has injected into airport paving, fire safety facilities and other projects at Majuro’s Amata Kabua International Airport over the past three years. Without the funding, the Marshalls would have difficulty implementing safety upgrades at airports. The FAA Western Pacific airports manager Mark McClardy said the quality and dedication of people in the Pacific aviation sector is impressive, with evidence that programmes in the islands are becoming more sustainable than many in mainland US.
