About Us

Celebrating it's 40th Anniversary, Paddle Canada is a non-profit national recreational canoeing, sea & river kayaking and SUP organization supported mostly by our members and our programs.

National training programs in Canoeing, Sea Kayaking, River Kayaking and now Stand Up Paddleboarding, continue to be the main activity taken on by the organization.
There are about 1500 individual and instructor members along with 8 Regional Member Paddling Associations that work together to deliver programs, education and awareness of safe and fun paddling.
A total of about 1000 courses with over 5000 participants are delivered nationally.
Our board and committees work with members on political and environmental threats facing paddlers.
We partner with Rapid Media's Adventure Kayak, Rapid and Canoeroots Magazines to deliver our organizations news, in a 3 page insert to members and subscribers alike all over North America (this instead of publishing our own magazine)

Paddling Programs

As part of the Paddle Canada teaching format, paddlers are taught the technical skills to help them experience safer and more enjoyable recreational paddling experiences. We offer skill and instructor courses in the following disciplines:

Canoeing (Lake Canoe, Moving Water, Canoe Tripping, Canoe Poling, Big Canoe, Coastal Canoeing & Style Canoeing)
Sea Kayaking
Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP)
River Kayaking

Membership

Individual - $40 plus tax annually:

The Individual Member Category is designed for the general public to join (annually) the National Association
receive many member benefits including a magazine subscription to their choice of a Rapid Media Magazine.
Individual Members have the right to attend all Board of Directors meetings as non-voting observers, with full right to discussion but shall have no voting status.

the Instructor Member Category is designed for Paddle Canada Instructors to join (annually) and instruct with the National Association
receive many benefits some of which include general liability insurance when teaching a PC course, industry pro-deals, and a magazine subscription to their choice of a Rapid Media Magazine.

Wild Whitewater Adventure For Teens by Pamela Stagg

"When the shot rang out, I leapt from my bed, lifted a corner of the bedroom curtain and looked down at the river bend. A fresh crack in the hump-backed ice jam glistened in the morning sunlight; like a wet wound. I squinted at it carefully, feeling my pulse rise. My mind flashed back to other rivers and other springs, reminding me that spring breakup can sound like gunfire."

So begins First Descent, a tale of wild adventure which starts with our hero, Rex, kayak-rescuing a child from a runaway ice floe before breakfast on day one. His grandfather, impressed by the boy's prowess, funds the 17 year-old's attempt at a first descent of Colombia's fictional Furioso River. Complete with level V rapids, a waterfall, an underground tunnel section and the infamous Dead Man's Canyon, paramilitary soldiers off to the right, guerillas and land mines to the left, and killer rapids dead ahead. Soon Rex is swept into the boiling turbulence of the river and of the politics. His paddling companions jump ship and his native guide leaves. The young man confronts the decision of continuing his epic paddle solo.

Despite its compelling suspense, First Descent holds the reader at arms length. Switching between Rex's perspective and an impersonal narrator representing the indigenous peoples, First Descent is annoyingly disjointed. Withers thriller writing style is best employed while describing the river sections. When telling the story of the indigenous peoples, the sense of place and the sensation that you are there dissipates.

Safety-conscious paddlers will be horrified at the risks Rex takes, from solo paddling a frigid river during breakup with no drysuit to attempting the first descent on a river with world-class risks. However, as Frank Wolf said, "A true adventure never really starts until you mess up really badly." Kayak-mad young teens may be willing to overlook the book's flaws for its undeniable adventure.

A full year's magazine subscription to Rapid, Adventure Kayak, or Canoeroots Magazine (choose print or digital format) plus one final issue of Kanawa. You also have the option to buy additional subscriptions at a discount. Stay up to date with Paddle Canada News, three-page insert. Get more info on the mags.

Bill Mason Memorial Scholarship 2011- 2012 Award Winner is Emma Drudge

On behalf of the BMMSF Committeee and the Board of Directors of Paddle Canada, we are pleased to announce Emma Drudge is the recipient of this years Bill Mason Memorial Scholarship Award. Emma will receive a cheque for $1000 from the scholarship fund, to assist her in her academic year.
