Century Country Club was started informally in March, 1898 and was incorporated on May 4th of that year. There are several theories as to how the name Century was chosen, including the possible intention to limit the membership to 100 and the establishment of the Club near the turn of the century. Golf Digest and The Met Golfer regularly acknowledge Century as one of the top courses in New York State and the Metropolitan area, respectively. In 2013, Links Magazine ranked Century Country Club as one of the “100 Most Prestigious Private Golf Clubs in the World.” The Club has a storied history in the tennis world with a former Wimbledon Champion as a long time member. There are several members who have played in national amateur and professional tournaments. Another member is a nationally ranked paddle player and there are several ranked squash players. The Club facilities include 12 har-tru courts and 2 all-weather courts. Three of the courts have a seasonal dome over them for winter use. The dome includes an area for a stringing machine, beverage station, seating and a mini-pro shop. There are 3 paddle courts and a relatively new paddle hut with a bathroom, small kitchen area and a fireplace. This year round position offers a very active and comprehensive program of tennis and platform tennis for the enjoyment of adult and junior members of all skill levels. Tennis Pro Search, the premiere recruiting firm for tennis and racquets executives, has been retained to facilitate the hiring process. For additional information on Century Country Club, click HERE.
he Field Club of Greenwich was founded in 1908 by a group of gentlemen with the intention of forming a club that would be the center of family life. As the Greenwich Graphic reported in 1940, they wanted “to find a modest meeting place for people of moderate means.” Among the founders was Elon Hooker, who made a fortune in chemicals, George Dommerick, a leader in the financial world, and Colby Chester, who became president of General Foods. The group bought eleven acres of land for $18,000, and The Field Club of Greenwich was born. The Field Club of Greenwich is a preeminent family racquet club in the area, with amenities including tennis, squash, platform tennis, swimming, fitness center, and fine dining.
his year’s Connecticut State Mixed took place in typical conditions: a SNOWSTORM. It didn’t deter Kallie and Scott Hapgood from playing great paddle all day and taking home their first win at an APTA sanctioned event. From the time the first ball was struck at 10:30 am to the final point of the tournament at 8:30 pm, snow continued to fall down. Starting in the quarters, 1st seed Katie Adams and Maurice Sanchez had to come up with some magic late in the third set to dispatch newcomers Morgan Melnikoff and Geoff LoConte in a close 6-4 set. Denise Giordano and son Marc Powers struggled with the conditions but eventually beat the Sheila and David Mueller 7-6, 6-2. In the bottom half of the draw, Shawn and Ben Swett advanced comfortably against 3rd seed Shana Roberts and Nate deKanter; while 2nd seed Kallie and Scott Hapgood beat Fiona Andren and Bennett Trembicki in two-sets entertaining match. In the semis Giordano-Powers outlasted Sanchez and Adams 6-4 in the third in a match that had it all: blitzes, spin shots, and huge drives. Hapgood-Hapgood continued their steady play and dominance at net with a straight set victory over the Swett-Swett. In the final match of the day, the Hapgoods proved to be too much for Giordano-Powers and won the match 6-3, 6-2. Kallie’s consistent backcourt play and Scott’s net coverage overwhelmed the mother-son team. Denise and Marc played a great match with Denise hitting terrific lobs and setting up Marc for big drives but in the end the Hapgoods were simply too solid. All results include: – Quarter Reprieve: Shana Roberts and Nate deKanter beat Morgan Melnikoff and Geoff LoConte Reprieve: Amy and Josh Rothman beat Connie and Matt Jones Consolation: Deb Greenberg and Roy Marchandini beat Christina Hare and Glenn Hutchinson Consolation Reprieve: Jackie Cameron and Felix Yamasato beat Tammy Jersey and Ricky Sanford Click HERE to access Main Draw Results Click HERE to access Reprieve and Quarter Reprieve and Draws Results Click HERE to access Consolation and Consolation Reprieve and Draws Results Special thanks go out to everyone who helped make this event a great success: – TO ALL THE PLAYERS FOR BRAVING THE CONDITIONS – The Aspetuck Chef for delivering a great lunch – All the local clubs for loaning us the courts – Paddletimes and Patricio Misitrano for the tournament support – Fire Engine Pizza Truck for their amazing pizzas – Our AMAZING hut commanders Alison Semple, Wendy Harris, Marina Ruiz, and Louis Volclair
