In a small beach town, just over the border of Arizona in Mexico, intriguing outdoor staircases leading up to elaborate facades and hidden passageways play a prominent role in their household’s exterior persona. 

Mosaic tile work is a common design element, staying true to the Mexican artistry of the country. Often hand-painted motifs, ranging from floral patterns to rural scenes of beaches with surrounding cacti and palm trees. Colors range as well. From bright Santa Fe Blue and vibrant hot pink to mustard yellow and adobe red, there are a myriad of options for those eager to bring a taste of the local artistry into their exterior landscape. 

Other common styles include accent staircases. Similar to famed accent walls, these staircases showcase a vividly contrasting color to the surrounding fixtures. It stands out in a minimal, yet completely eye-catching way. It is a simple and yet effective  tactic for creating a brilliancy of poignant space separation without exaggerated features. 

The exterior staircase is not a feature we tend to pay much attention to. It’s an architectural feature mostly noticed in beach towns and other properties immersed by robust and scenic outdoor arenas. 

In places where homeowners choose to make this element another exterior draw of its credentials, we are drawn to its methodical enhancement. They compel us to come forth and venture upon them. Almost as if they are saying,”I am useful, as I am beautiful.” 

It resembles a hanging chandelier with water-like cascading shells glimmering downwards. However, it is securely wall mounted. Its made from metal with a luminous satin nickel finish for subtle light reflection. Its natural capiz shells also pick up light, creating a light-catching and reflective radiance. Capiz shells comes from the shell of the Placuna placenta mollusk, which is native to the seas of Southeast Asia, specifically Indonesia and the Philippines.

The shells have a translucent opaque quality about them. When the bulbs light up it creates a beautiful, almost majestic underwater luminosity. We can see these gracing the interior of an oceanfront beach house in Italy or off the coast of California.

Of course, it is technically a 3-legged design, with 2 other straight legs offering front support. It has a body-cradling backrest with clean curves and a mid-century modern classic fluid line silhouette. In our opinion, it sort of resembles a fancy formal high-heel shoe, which is another reason we can’t help but call out its feminine graceful curves.

Aside from its appearance, it is expertly built by skilled craftsmen in the UK. It takes one entire week to make a Contour Chair. One factor in its length of time – it is made by individual planks of hand-selected wood for grain consistency. Although it looks similar to some single bentwood designs to the untrained eye, this is produced using several planks of wood. This can add extra strength and optimal stability.

It comes in black walnut, oak, and engineering grade timber. Last but not least, its beech wood option is finished using a Japanese charring technique called Shou Sugi Ban. This technique helps to showcase the woods unique textures and vibrant details.

We love seeing new modern chairs with bold, interesting designs. The Contour Chair is a new kid on the block with a cool base to match its curvy style.

Nowadays, mid-century modern reproductions and contemporary interiors along with many furnishings and home decor is in the likeness of this famous art movement. Good design never truly goes out of style, does it? For those who are unfamiliar with De Stijl / Neoplasticism, this style is rooted in precise geometric forms, primarily straight lines, squares and rectangles. Although, they do venture into diagonals on occasion.

The color palette is often primary colors, red, blue and yellow, sometimes with black and white. However, this was mainly a product of Mondrian’s most famous artwork. Doesburg ventured into the diagonals, as well as experimented with more colors and shapes. Doesburg was the first to use primary colors in this block-style form.

In some circles, the name of this art style, De Stijl and Neoplasticism, are used interchangeably. For our sake, we are going to use De Stijl to encompass both styles because of its additive quality to the art form.

Not all De Stijl modern design inspiration needs to have every element of this iconic art style. It would be overkill if each one replicated the same classic De Stijl paintings over and over again. Expanding upon their original Stack collection with new furniture and accessories, they’ve created sculptural consoles, tabletop decor, benches and seating. The collection is named after their signature stack lamination process.

The stack lamination process requires sheets of raw Baltic birch plywood to be stack laminated to create a large volume of material. These blocks are CNC machined using CAD and CAM programs into the distinct shape of the final design. Next, they are 3D machined, assembled, and finally finished.

Timbur uses 7-axis robotic machining and 3-axis CNC machining. CNC stands for “Computerized Numerical Control. It is a computerized manufacturing process in which pre-programmed software and code controls the movement of production equipment.” Whereas, 3D machining or 3D milling machining is the process of “using computers to control the creation of complex parts from raw materials.”

*Please note * This is not the same as 3D printing. 3D printing is additive, 3D machining is subtractive.  

It is similar to raw plywood layering in the final result. However, they incorporate new technological processes such as 3D milling machines to create a stacked laminated design.

Its efficient and pertinent to this era, although the furniture designs themselves are similar to some traditional Scandinavian mid-century designs, their new technique lives up to the innovative ways conceived by classic mid-century modern designers during the peaks of mid-century modern design from the 1930’s into the 1960’s.
