My Top Picks: Netflix Reality Shows Worth Watching

Growing up, I’ve been a fan of reality game shows like Survivor Philippines, Extra Challenge, Fear Factor Philippines, and the local version of The Amazing Race, just to name a few. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of not knowing what’s coming next, the unpredictability, and that thrill of guessing what could happen. It’s the unscripted moments that kept me hooked every time.

Lately, I found myself revisiting that fascination. I started browsing through Netflix, which has no shortage of reality shows to choose from. After watching a good number of them, I came up with my strong top five — the ones that really held my attention, kept me on edge, and gave me one wow moment after another in every episode.

Here’s my ranking, starting from five and counting down to my favorite.

5. The Big Flower Fight

This is not your usual competition. It’s a creative and surprisingly intense show where floral designers and sculptors compete to build larger-than-life installations made entirely of flowers and plants. What I liked most about it is how unpredictable each creation turns out and how each team interprets the challenge differently. It’s calming to watch but also keeps you guessing who will pull it off beautifully and who might crumble under pressure.

4. Blow Away

I didn’t expect a glassblowing competition to be this exciting, but it is. The artists work against the clock to create intricate glass pieces, and you can feel the tension with every fragile detail. I love how this show balances art with drama and how every piece tells a story by the end of each episode. You can see how much skill and patience go into each creation, and it’s hard not to root for everyone.

3. Million Dollar Secret

This one is more subtle but gripping in its own way. It follows people who have won or inherited a million dollars and kept it a secret from those around them. The emotional weight of that choice and the way it affects their lives really drew me in. It’s less about spectacle and more about the human side of money and trust, which made it stand out from the usual high-stakes competitions.

2. The Trust: A Game of Greed

This show had me at the edge of my seat. Strangers are given a huge sum of money and have to decide whether to split it or betray each other for more. The way the group dynamics shift with every decision kept me invested, and it really shows how quickly trust can break down when greed enters the picture. Every episode feels like a social experiment you can’t look away from.

1. The Mole

This is my clear favorite. It’s a mix of mystery, strategy, and betrayal all wrapped into one. Contestants work as a group to earn money for the pot, but one of them is secretly sabotaging the challenges. I loved trying to figure out who the mole was while watching everyone second-guess each other. It’s the perfect balance of mind games and action, and every reveal hits just right.

Looking back, I realized what makes these shows stand out to me is how they capture both the best and worst of people when put in unusual situations. They’re a reminder of how unpredictable we all can be when stakes are high and nothing is certain.

My First 10K: Soaked, Tired, but Happy

I’m finally back in Davao, and now that the weekend rush has settled, I can finally sit down and put this into words. Out of everything that happened over the weekend, and it was a full, back-to-back kind of weekend, this moment deserves its own space.

Running was never really on my radar. I didn’t grow up as an athlete, and I’ve always been more of a “walk when you can” type. But last April, my doctor told me straight up that I needed to start moving more. So I started running. Slowly, awkwardly at first, but I showed up anyway. And somehow that decision brought me here, to my first official 10K.

Race day itself was nothing like I imagined. The rain didn’t just show up, it poured. We were soaked even before hitting the halfway mark, shoes heavy with water, clothes sticking to skin, hair dripping. But to my surprise, it didn’t bother me. Not even a little. In fact, it made everything feel more real, more alive. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

The week before the run, though, was rough. I barely trained. Work was relentless, meetings left and right, deadlines piled high, clients waiting. Running just didn’t fit anywhere in my schedule, and I went into the weekend worrying if I could even finish.

But as I crossed that finish line, I felt something I haven’t felt in a long time, proud. Not the loud, cheering kind of proud. Just a quiet sense of accomplishment that I stuck to something for myself, even when it would’ve been easier to back out.

So here I am, still a little sore but already thinking about what’s next. First 10K in the books. Soaked, tired, but happy. Definitely won’t be the last.

This isn’t exactly a coming out post. It’s more of a reminder to myself and maybe to others that being loud and proud is still something I owe myself.

I’ve never really had a dramatic coming out story. I didn’t sit anyone down to say the words. Somehow, the people around me already knew. Maybe it was how I moved, how I acted, or maybe because I had a gay sister. I didn’t have to spell it out. And for that, I’m grateful.

But just because I didn’t have to come out doesn't mean I was free. I still had to hide parts of myself, especially at home. I grew up in a house full of boys, three older brothers, all straight, and a very strict father. That already tells you enough. I was abused by my brothers too. I don’t talk about that part often, but it’s real, and it shaped me.

Even as a kid, I knew I was gay. I dreamed of being a fashion designer so I could dress up pretty women. That dream lived in my head because I couldn’t bring it out into the world, not back then.

In high school, I had these butterfly charms on my ID sling. I loved them. But before going home, I’d always tuck them into my bag so my dad wouldn’t see. One day, I forgot. I walked out of school with the butterflies still hanging, and my dad saw me. I got scolded. It was a small thing, but to me, it felt like being punished for just being myself.

So no, I wasn’t completely closeted. But I had to be careful. I had to hide just enough to get by.

Being gay meant I always had to prove something. I had to be smart, do well in school, be better than what people expected. I couldn’t afford to be mediocre.

Even in college, I had to hustle hard. I worked. I took on a lot. I did whatever I had to do to make things work.

It was only when I moved to Davao that I felt like I could finally breathe. I didn’t have to say I was gay, people already knew. But for the first time, I didn’t feel the need to hide anymore.

This Pride, I just want to say it plainly, yes, bayot ako. I’ve always been. And this time, I’m saying it not just because people already know, but because I’m proud.

I owe it to myself to live fully, without shrinking or hiding any part of who I am. I owe it to the younger me who had to keep quiet, stay careful, and work twice as hard just to feel safe. And now that I’ve made it here, I choose to be loud, not because I have to, but because I finally can.

A Little Birthday Break

Things have been rough lately, so I figured I deserved a little something for my birthday. Nothing big, just a short escape to clear my head and take a breather.

Honestly, I thought this trip wasn’t going to happen. I filed for leave months in advance, but a few weeks before my planned flight, I got the dreaded "not approved" email. Classic. I had to push again last minute, and thankfully, despite how messy the internal process was, I got some support. In the end, I only got one day of paid leave out of it, which is ridiculous, but it is what it is.

Even with all that back-and-forth, I was still thankful I got to pull it off. Huge shoutout to the Cebu Pacific Air team for helping me put together a multi-city trip, Davao to Manila to Cebu and back. I fly often, but this one gave me a bit of a headache during the booking process. Thankfully, their team made it smooth. Even when I had to make last-minute changes in my Manila schedule, they adjusted the flight without any fuss. That kind of support matters a lot.

Manila was short but packed. Just two nights, but definitely worth it. I got to attend the press conference of Korean actor Song Joong Ki. He was charming, well-spoken, and just as good-looking in person. It was fun hearing him talk about how excited he was for his fan meeting in Manila, all thanks to his partnership with IAm Worldwide as their 2025 headliner and brand ambassador. Big thanks to PublicityAsia for making that experience possible.

Right after the fan meeting, I had a fun hotpot dinner with NepC and Bench. It was quick but full of laughter. From there, I had to rush back to Hop Inn Hotel in Aseana to prep for my 5 AM flight to Cebu. Grateful to Hop Inn for hosting me, their location made things easier and more convenient given my crazy schedule.

Landed in Cebu around 7 AM, running on barely any sleep, but still pushed through. I had only a few minutes to get from the airport to Jpark Island Resort & Waterpark, where I was checking in. I needed to freshen up fast because Pau's family was already at Cebu Ocean Park. Day one in Cebu started with marine life — aquariums, sea creatures, and all that. It reminded me of my fisheries school days. Still, it's always cool seeing them up close again. That night, we had dinner at Sugbo Mercado where we casually ordered two kilos of lechon for three adults and two kids. A bit much, but hey, when you're in Cebu, lechon is non-negotiable.

On day two, we went to Cebu Safari and Adventure Park. It’s a bit of a drive, around two hours, but totally worth it. We saw everything from marine animals to birds to big cats. The bird show was surprisingly fun, and we really took our time going around. After that, we drove back and dropped by Taboan Market to get pasalubong like chicharon and bulad. Dinner was at Pungko-Pungko sa Fuente, where you just pick what you want and eat with your hands, a very local, very Cebu kind of meal.

Before heading back to the hotel, we passed by Sol’s Halo-Halo. I never miss a chance to stop by there. Still the best halo-halo in Cebu for me. Always has been.

The next day, we had breakfast, packed up, and headed back to the airport for our flight home to Davao.

This trip was exactly what I needed. It was my first time staying at Jpark Island Resort & Waterpark, and I loved everything about it. The place is a stunner, but what stood out most was their staff. They weren’t robotic or overly scripted. They talked like real people, helped without hesitation, and just made the whole stay enjoyable. I’d definitely go back.

Cebu never disappoints. Short trip, but full of moments I needed. Still tired, still catching up on rest, but I’m heading back to work with a full heart.

My Comfy Stay at Hop Inn Hotels Aseana for J-Hope's Concert

I’ve flown in and out of Manila so many times for concerts, and every single time, the real battle isn’t just getting a ticket—it’s finding the right accommodation.

Sure, I have my go-to places, but let’s be real: trying out a new hotel every now and then feels like unlocking a new experience. It’s part of the trip. I’m always on the lookout for a spot that checks all my boxes: comfort, convenience, and accessibility.

For my recent trip to Manila for J-Hope’s “Hope On The Stage” concert at MOA Arena, I booked a stay at Hop Inn Hotels, Aseana City. I’ve stayed at their Davao branch before (which was a good experience too), but this was my first time trying out their Manila location. And spoiler alert—I might have found a new favorite.

Why this branch?

It’s the proximity for me. I don’t usually like walking far when I’m in Manila (you know… safety, unfamiliar streets, and all that), but the hotel was just a 5 to 10-minute walk from MOA Arena. That’s basically two full songs on your playlist and you’re already at the venue. Super convenient.

What’s around the area?

The hotel has a convenience store right downstairs, a coffee shop, and an ATM in the lobby (which saved me, btw). If you’re feeling a bit fancy, Parqal is just a block away, and there’s a Starbucks 2 blocks away. You’re not going to feel disconnected at all—everything you need is just around the corner.

The room? Clean and comfy.

Nothing too extra, but that’s the charm. The room was spotless, had no weird smells (iykyk), and the bathroom was neat. I had a really good sleep—and honestly, that’s all I could ask for after a long day.

And the surprise? Oh, this made me smile.

I checked in late after a red-eye flight (hello, delays), and I was already exhausted. But when I entered the room, there was a welcome surprise on my bed—official J-Hope merch! From photocards to a keychain, they were all there, waiting for me. I mentioned during booking that I was flying in for the concert, and this thoughtful gesture just made my night. Hop Inn team, if you're reading this—you guys made this ARMY happy.

DBS in Action: A Book Drive for SOS Children's Village Davao

When we started 2025, we knew we wanted to make it a year of growth and giving back. And what better way to do that than by helping shape young minds through books? Partnering once again with iVolunteer Philippines, we were introduced to different beneficiaries in need—but one stood out: SOS Children’s Village Davao. Their library was in dire need of a refresh, and that’s where our journey began.

Bringing Color Back to Their Library

A week before the donation drive, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Thanks to Boysen Paints, we gave the library a much-needed makeover. It wasn’t just about painting walls; it was about creating a space where kids could dream, learn, and escape into the world of stories. Seeing the transformation felt like the first page of a new chapter—not just for the library, but for the kids who would soon fill it.

A Day Filled with Stories and Smiles

On March 8, we returned, this time with stacks of books and hearts full of excitement. Big Bad Wolf generously provided 300 books, ensuring that every child had something new to read and explore. But we didn’t stop there. With the help of our amazing partners, we also provided sacks of rice for each household, grocery support to help sustain daily needs, and food and snacks to make sure everyone—kids and volunteers alike—was well-fed, thanks to Foodpanda, Red Ribbon, and Mamastill.

Beyond the donations, it was the connections we built that made the day truly special. From short storytelling sessions to conversations with the kids about their favorite books, every moment reminded us why we do what we do.

My Honest Take on Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital

When I first sat down to watch Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital, I didn’t know what to expect. Found-footage films aren’t really my forte, but this movie managed to shatter my expectations and leave a strong impression. Here’s my honest take on it.

The film’s opening sequence immediately set the tone, immersing the audience in its eerie atmosphere. That initial footage was not only unsettling but also smartly woven into the plot later on. It created a seamless connection between the backstory and the unfolding chaos, which I absolutely loved. It’s rare for a movie to nail such cohesion, and this one did it effortlessly.

Now, while I’m not deeply familiar with the found-footage genre, this movie gave me a fresh perspective on how horror can be presented. The setup was satisfying and well-thought-out, making the scares feel earned rather than forced. It’s clear that a lot of care went into crafting an experience that felt new yet grounded in classic horror elements.

As for the cast, they delivered strong performances, but Jane de Leon stood out by miles. She carried the movie with her presence, making every scene she was in truly memorable. On the flip side, Rob and Alexa, while undeniably annoying (as they were meant to be), brought a sense of realism to the group dynamics. Let’s face it—there’s always that one person in every group who just can’t behave!

That said, I wish Zarck had been given more screen time. As someone who has visited haunted houses plenty of times, I felt his character deserved more development, especially during those critical moments.

I also have to highlight Raf’s performance. It was my first time seeing him, and he was such a vibe! His natural delivery and perfectly timed banter added just the right amount of levity and drama to the scenes. I only wish his character hadn’t been written out so soon—it felt like he had so much more to offer.

The film expertly created an atmosphere of suffocating tension. From start to finish, it almost never let up, keeping me fully engaged and hooked on what would happen next. The story was easy to follow, but it still held enough mystery to keep me guessing. However, I felt the death scenes could have been more impactful. Some moments, like MJ’s transformation, felt rushed. One second she’s there, the next she’s an unexplainable entity which I somehow get the logic behind it, but I wanted more buildup, more terror.

One thing I would have loved to see is the inclusion of real sounds and original footage captured during the characters’ investigation. Highlighting these elements could have elevated the eerie vibes and made the experience even more disturbing. The runtime, at just 90 minutes, felt a bit short. Adding more depth to these elements could have enhanced the film’s impact without making it feel overstretched.

But I have to commend one aspect I appreciated, which was the attention to detail in the livestream scenes. Every time the monitor showed the livestream feed, I couldn’t help but notice the nonsensical comments popping up on the side of the screen. It added a layer of authenticity, making it feel like a real livestream. These little touches made the movie’s premise even more immersive and believable.

On a personal note, as the president of an organization of bloggers and influencers, I often emphasize the importance of integrity in content creation. This film doesn’t just deliver scares—it shines a light on the darker side of the digital world, where the pursuit of fame and validation can blur ethical boundaries.

This movie serves as a reality check, challenging us to think about the limits we’re willing to cross. In the age of social media, where every click and share counts, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. The movie’s chilling take on this issue made it more than just a horror film—it became a mirror reflecting the unsettling truths of our reality

Despite a few minor flaws, Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital is an exceptional film that delivers on scares, tension, and substance. It’s a rare gem that entertains while also leaving you with something to think about. For its strong execution and thought-provoking themes, I’m giving it a solid 9/10. As the President of Davao Bloggers Society, organizing our annual Christmas party was no small task. This year, the theme was "Elegance in Tradition: A DBS Filipino Christmas Celebration," a perfect blend of modern Filipiniana style and timeless traditions. With everything we’ve gone through in recent years, I wanted this year’s celebration to be grand.

Planning for this celebration began way back in August. We wanted it to be something special, especially since this marks my last term as president of the society. Looking back at our journey, it feels like just yesterday when we were struggling to keep things afloat during the pandemic. But after everything—the challenges, the setbacks, and the endless planning—we’re finally back on our feet. The sense of pride and fulfillment from seeing everyone come together for this celebration is truly indescribable.

One of the things I was most excited about was the dress code: modern Filipiniana. It’s a beautiful way to honor our roots while embracing a modern take on traditional fashion. For my outfit, I decided to break the norm. I wore a bespoke men’s barong, but with a twist: a butterfly sleeve—something you usually see on women’s outfits—on just one shoulder. The asymmetry was intentional, symbolizing how tradition can evolve while staying true to its roots. Instead of pairing the barong with matching pants, I opted for a long skirt to create a more contemporary and bold look. It was my way of showing that tradition doesn’t have to be rigid; it can be playful, experimental, and personal.

I wasn't the only one who got creative with their outfits. Some of my favorite looks of the night included Glenn's indigenous ensemble, which was nothing short of stunning. His outfit showcased how we can take traditional elements and make them modern without losing their meaning. Raff, on the other hand, took things up a notch with his obi-woven belt and chain accents—two distinct styles fused together in such a fresh way. Kirby looked sharp in a sleek Nino Franco design, while Bien amazed us with her modern Filipina jumpsuit. Sarah made a bold statement with a classic bolero paired with see-through pants, and Athina’s woven dress by Bamba Limon was a beautiful tribute to our cultural craftsmanship.

But aside from the fashion, the night was filled with warm memories. It was also the time when the Davao Blog Awards took place, and I had the honor of being nominated for Best Personal Blog and Cebu Pacific Davao Blogger of the Year. While I didn’t win, it was an amazing experience to be recognized alongside so many talented bloggers in our community. The journey, for me, has never been about winning, but about the growth and connection I’ve found with people who share the same passion for content creation and storytelling.

I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge my incredible co-officers: Clea, NepC, Pau, Jade, Athina, and Jexx, who were so hands-on throughout the planning process. Their commitment and hard work were invaluable in making this event a success. From getting suppliers on board to ensuring everything ran smoothly, their efforts truly made a difference. Special shoutout to our Special Events Director, Jexx, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring everything together and make this celebration unforgettable. It wouldn’t have been the same without their dedication and teamwork.

And as we close this chapter, I’m excited to see what’s next for this amazing community of content creators.

The strength of this group, the support we give each other, and the passion we all share for what we do has been the fuel that keeps us going.
