Pakistan U-19 swept the series 2-0 against Aussies U19's.

Riding, once again, on the strength of an intense bowling attack, the Pakistan Under-19s went on to clinch their 3-match Youth ODI series against the Australia Under-19s with a 7-wicket win in the second game, played at Kerrydale Oval, Gold Coast on July 31.

The first ODI saw the Pakistan U-19 winning the toss and electing to field first, with the bowlers going on to cut Australia off at 187 before Babar Azam led his team to victory with an impressive 79.

The visitors put the Australia U-19 to bat after winning the toss once again during the second ODI, and the hosts opened their innings with Cameron Bancroft (47) and wicketkeeper batsman Jimmy Peirson (11).

The latter was unable to stick it out at the crease, and found himself caught out by wicketkeeper Salman Afridi in the 4th over off Azizullah, who finished with figures of 6-1-11-1, with an economy rate of 1.83.

Three runs later, Kurtis Patterson was run out by Babar Azam on duck, leaving the hosts at 17 in the 6th over, with two wickets down. Tight performances by the Pakistani bowlers and fielders ensured that Australia had only managed to reach 53 by the 22nd over, with the dismissals having swelled to 4 – Player of the Match Zia-ul-Haq (7-0-20-3) took down Meyrick Buchanan (2) in the 19th over, while skipper William Bosisto was run out on 12.

Number 6 batsman Travis Head (43) proved an effective partner for Bancroft, and the two established a partnership of 52 runs, after which the opener fell prey to Zafar Gohar, and Head found himself bowled by Usman Qadir.

The remainder of the batting order were unable to rack up double digit individual scores - Zia-ul-Haq claimed the wickets of both Ashton Turner (9) and Alex Gregory (5) in the 43rd over, while Mohammad Nawaz (7.1-0-22-2) took down Nick Stevens (7) and Mark Steketee (0). Australia were eventually cut off at 139, all out, by the 44th over.

Chasing 140, the tourists had no trouble reaching the target with 92 balls remaining, at the expense of just 3 wickets. Sami Aslam (26), Babar Azam (20), and Umar Waheed (21) were all dismissed by the Aussie bowlers, but Imam-ul-Haq (30) and Saad Ali (36) remained unbeaten. Their partnership of 52* runs enabled their team to clinch a 7-wicket win, and consequently the three-match Youth ODI series.

Pakistan plans grand awards ceremony to attract foreign attention

2012-07-31T03:21:00.002+05:00

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning to hold a grand awards ceremony on the lines of the International Cricket Council (ICC) annual awards in the country in October this year to attract foreign attention.

"The idea is to showcase the positive side of Pakistan cricket and its talent on annual basis and utilise the awards ceremony to invite foreign guests as well," a source said.

He said PCB was keen to resume international cricket in Pakistan and believed one way towards this was to have dignitaries from the ICC and other boards attending the PCB awards ceremony.

"The board wants to organise its ceremony on a grand scale with cash prizes being awarded in different categories similar to the ones in the ICC awards," the source added.

He pointed out that the PCB already had a system in place to offer financial incentives and bonuses to players who excel individually.

"They already give financial incentives to players for scoring a century, half century, taking five or four wickets, catches in different formats of the game," he said.

"Companies have been invited to submit details of their concepts for such a ceremony," added another source.

He said the board also expected to generate some income from its annual awards as it would sell the broadcasting rights and other rights of the ceremony to a successful bidder.

"PCB chief Zaka Ashraf is keen to hold high-profile cricket activities in the country at a time when international teams are not touring Pakistan because of security concerns.

He feels this would be a good way to present the soft image of Pakistan and its cricket," he said.

Zaka statement surprises Ijaz Butt

2012-05-29T20:41:00.002+05:00

“I feel that somebody in the PCB is wrongly advising Mr Ashraf,” Ijaz Butt said. -

LAHORE: Former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt, in a rejoinder to his successor Zaka Ashraf’s statement, clarified that he went to India to discuss the revival of cricketing ties between the two countries with the consent of the present PCB chief and Zaka had taken him by surprise by saying that only board-to-board talks will be held to resume the ties.

In a written statement to Dawn, Ijaz said: “I was very surprised to read my friend’s [Zaka] comments regarding my earlier statement given in good faith to Dawn News.

“I would like to clarify here that I had written to Mr Zaka Ashraf that I am going to India on my own and if he agrees, I could talk to some of my friends like Rajiv Shukla and Sharad Powar for early resumption of India-Pakistan matches. Zaka had agreed and afterwards I also had a one-to-one meeting with him in the Punjab Club about my visit. Later, after my return from India, I had a detailed meeting with the PCB chief again and apprised him of the results.

“I feel that somebody in the PCB is wrongly advising Mr Ashraf. In the past I have avoided any interviews etc with the media. I am fully with Mr Zaka Ashraf for his efforts to get the foreign teams to visit Pakistan and to finalise India-Pakistan matches as soon as possible. I will only help if he needs my help, but I do not want to interfere in his efforts to bring cricket back to Pakistan. Best of luck to Mr Zaka Ashraf,” Ijaz concluded..

Bangladesh Cricket Board challenges Pakistan’s win in Asia Cup final

2012-03-25T09:02:00.001+05:00

Rejecting the Pakistan cricket teams’ victory in the final of 12^th Asia Cup, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has challenged it in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) here on Saturday.

In a statement, the BCB stated that Pakistani pacer Aizaz Cheema had deliberately tried to prevent Bangladeshi batsmen from taking runs in the final over of the Asia Cup Tournament match.

He appealed to the ACC to look into the matter. The BCB said that in this regard a written appeal would be soon submitted with the ACC.

Earlier Bangladesh Cricket Board had excused to send cricket team to Pakistan.

PCB Chief suggests Amir to Challenge 5 year Ban

2012-03-24T20:49:00.001+05:00

Pakistan Cricket Board [PCB] Chairman Zaka Ashraf termed Amir's five-year ban for his role in spot-fixing as "harsh", suggesting him to challenge it.

"I think the five-year ban is too harsh and it is down to Amir if he wishes to appeal against that lengthy ban imposed upon him. I would suggest that he does appeal against the ban, and I think the relevant body should take a lenient view given his age and the talent he possesses," Ashraf said after his return from the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, which Pakistan won.

"We should not let this young boy's career be ruined. We should all try to help him and understand that he was trapped into spot-fixing," he said.

Ashraf, who had recently met Amir at the PCB headquarters, said the young pacer was sorry for the mistake he committed.

"Amir was very apologetic at the meeting we had with him and spoke of how he was trapped into spot-fixing. He is such a wonderful young talent that has been wasted and it's such a shame that he cannot even use our practice facilities," Ashraf was quoted as saying by a website.

"Coming from such a remote village, Amir could have become the best bowler in the world. He has served his prison sentence and that matter is now closed, but the issue of the ICC ban is obviously still ongoing," Ashraf said.

PCB has plans in place for Amir's rehabilitation, including lectures to young Pakistan cricketers.

"First and foremost, we are going to arrange for some psychiatric treatment for Amir, which I feel is absolutely essential. Then he is going to give lectures to other cricketers in Pakistan on his own experiences and explain to other cricketers to not get trapped like he was."

"It will be a series of talks that he gives, delivering guidelines to other cricketers. He can explain first hand to our cricketers to avoid such people who look to trap cricketers and provide the cricketers with first-hand experience on such matters," he said.

'India raised questions over Ajmal's bowling action'

2012-03-19T21:55:00.001+05:00

The Indian team has reportedly questioned Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal's bowling action following their six-wicket win in the Asia Cup on Sunday.

According to sources, the BCCI is considering writing to the ICC over the bowler's doosra, which is a bone of contention. Questions have been raised over Ajmal's action in the past but the ICC has cleared him after a series of tests.

Ajmal himself claimed so in an interview to BBC television recently. "I don't know about my bowling action, but somebody was telling me your action is bad. ICC has allowed me 23.5 because my arm is not good because of an accident, that is why a problem," he told the BBC. "Otherwise no problem, straightaway cleared by ICC."

Ajmal’s remarks stirred up a controversy as the ICC charter says a bowler can straighten his arm only up to 15 degrees. In the match at Mirpur’s Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday, Ajmal got rid of Sachin Tendulkar with a doosra, the equivalent of a googly which is bowled by a legspinner.

Even though India won the match, the batsmen were reportedly unhappy with Ajmal’s action.

Ajmal hits back at 'chucker' claims after record figures against England

2012-01-17T22:29:00.002+05:00

Saeed Ajmal has hit back at critics who questioned the legality of his action after he had put England in dire trouble in the first Test. The world No 1 Test nation endured a torrid time against the unorthodox Pakistan off-spinner, collapsing to 192 all out, but they had no quibbles afterwards about the straightness of the arm which had taken a career-best seven for 55 on day one of this three-match series in the UAE. Instead, the noises off came from a former England captain several thousand miles away in London - Bob Willis voicing his teatime opinion, in a broadcast studio, that Ajmal is pushing the limits of the current Laws of Cricket. In a spin: Saeed Ajmal was criticised in some quarters over his bowling action In a spin: Saeed Ajmal was criticised in some quarters over his bowling action Ajmal has already been reported and cleared in 2009 of transgressing the permitted straightening of his arm. And he had to account for himself again. 'I'm just concentrating on my bowling. It's the umpires' and match referee's responsibility to see if there is any problem with my action,' he said. 'They did it to [former Pakistan off-spinner] Saqlain Mushtaq. They are doing it with me. 'I have played county cricket, and there has been no problem with my action.' There was no equivocation from Matt Prior, who top-scored 70 not out, either. 'On his action, it's not something that we are concerned about or talk about in the dressing room,' said England's wicketkeeper-batsman. 'It's got nothing to do with us. If other people want to do that, it's up to them.' Top man: Ajmal posted career-best figures as England collapsed on day one Top man: Ajmal posted career-best figures as England collapsed on day one Prior acknowledged that, irrespective of Ajmal's methods, England's batsmen fell short of their own expectations. But he remains confident the tourists can still fight back here. 'Obviously today has not gone as we wanted,' he said. 'But it's not all over - we can't just give it up now. We've got a huge day tomorrow, and we're very confident we can pull something out of this game. 'The great thing is that this team's been in tough positions and fought our way back. We've won and saved Test matches from this position. So it's nothing new.' Prior discounted the theory that England were fazed by the hype about Ajmal's mystery deliveries during the build-up to this series. Defence: Ajmal was cleared in 2009 Defence: Ajmal was cleared in 2009 'I don't think he got in our heads,' Prior said. 'Obviously, we spoke about him because he's a big threat. I don't think it's a case of us over-thinking or fearing - we just didn't quite get it right. He bowled well. Hats off to him.' Prior's innings was a triumph of self-discipline, the natural strokemaker restricting himself to three boundaries from 154 balls. 'I played very straight and was very watchful, and that's maybe the way we have to look at it,' he said. 'It's all very well going out and trying to get on the top of the bowlers. But this is just a reminder that subcontinental cricket is slightly more attritional, and you have to play the long game. 'He didn't bowl anything that we weren't prepared for, weren't expecting. He just had a good day. Cricketers are allowed to do that. 'I think the batters will hold their hands up and say, 'Right, we didn't quite get it right today. Maybe we played a few cross-batted shots when perhaps we needed to play straight'. 'But look around that room, we've got a class batting outfit. One bad day at the office doesn't suddenly turn that all round. It's not all panic stations.' For Ajmal - despite the hint of controversy - it was simply a day to savour. 'It's the best performance of my life,' he said. 'I bowled wicket to wicket, and there were a few bad shots as well. There was low bounce, and some of them played cross-bat shots. 'We're not surprised. We've been working on a plan, and we've bowled them out as per the plan.'
