Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Monday said that the people of Pakistan not only courageously withstood the threat of terrorism, they also defied and defeated unfounded dictates of an insignificant and misguided minority in the general elections. Kayani said the nation has proved that it could face any challenge, and has defeated the “misguided minority”. “In the recently conducted general elections, the nation has amply demonstrated that it can withstand any challenge,” he remarked while addressing a day-long international symposium on counter-improvised explosive device (C-IED) “Saving lives by jointly defeating IEDs” here at the GHQ. As a nation, he observed that Pakistanis were peace-loving people. Overwhelming majority of the people is moderate, resilient and extraordinarily hardworking. “As a nation, our commitment to moderation, prosperity and rule of law is total and unwavering. We have the resolve and a firm belief to overcome the challenges towards attainment of these goals,” he added. Bodies of Three More Gyari Martyrs Recovered: ISPR

Three dead bodies of martyred soldiers were recovered from Gayari sector of Siachen on Saturday bringing the total number of bodies recovered so far to 128. According to an ISPR Spokesman here, on April 7, 2012, 140 soldiers and civilians of 6 Northern Light Infantry Battalion came under a huge avalanche in Gayari and embraced martyrdom. He said that 121 bodies of were recovered before the suspension of Operation Gayari, due to winter on November 27, 2012. After opening of weather and melting of snow, search for remaining 19 martyrs commenced on April 15, 2013 by employing 228 military personnel and 29 heavy engineering equipment pieces including excavators, dozers and drill machines. It is once again reiterated that these sustained efforts would continue till recovery of last man, he added. Pakistan Air Force Chief Visits Nigeria

Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt has visited the Nigerian Air Force, Headquarters on Friday. On his arrival at the NAF HQs, he was presented with the Guard of Honour. The air chief, who is on a five-day official visit to Nigeria, also attended a briefing on the organisation, role and functioning of Nigerian Air Force. During the visit, he met Air Marshal Alex Badeh, Nigerian Chief of the Air Staff. The air chief said that his visit to Nigeria was a follow-up of the visit of Nigerian chief of the air staff. He also requested for further assistance for the C-130 fleet of NAF and sending an instructor pilot on the C-130 aircraft as well. The Nigerian air chief sought the cooperation of Pakistan Air Force in revamping the training of pilots at Nigerian Air Academy. Air Marshal Alex Badeh thanked the PAF for its assistance to the Nigerian Air Force and requested for more assistance and cooperation between the two countries. Gen.Kayani Meets Nawaz Sharif

Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Saturday met Prime Minister-designate Nawaz Sharif and briefed him on the security situation of the country. Kayani, who sought the meeting, called on Sharif at his brother Shahbaz Sharif’s residence at Model Town Lahore. This was the first meeting between Kayani and Sharif since the PML-N emerged victorious in the May 11 general election.The meeting lasted over three hours and the leaders had lunch together. No other PML-N leaders were present during the meeting. The army chief briefed the PML-N chief on the security situation across the country. The leaders also exchanged views on the regional situation and the war on terror, sources said. Pakistan Army Wins National Women Cycling Title

Pakistan Army won the title of the 10th national women cycling championship here on Saturday at the cycling velodrome. Army’s riders added another gold to their previous four to emerge the winners of the three-day premier event held under the supervision of Pakistan Cycling Federation,Munawar Baseer Group. Army won the elimination race final as a total four finals were contested and Wapda, Punjab and SSGC won apiece. Sabia Zahid of Army was declared the fastest and best rider of the year while Anam Mehmood of SSGC got the honour of best cyclists in the junior category. Maj.Gen.(retd) Akram Sahi, President Pakistan Athletic Federation was the chief guest at the closing ceremony and witnessed finals with keen interest and also distributed the prizes among the winners. MunawarBaseer Ahmad, President Pakistan Cycling Federation thanked the Army Sports Directorate for hosting the event in a befitting manner. Pakistan Army Gifts Six Horses to Sri Lanka Military Academy

Six horses gifted to the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) at Diyatalawa by the Pakistan Army have been formally received on Monday at the Lake View Equestrian Centre in Hokandara. The horses donated by the Pakistan Army in response to a request by the Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya will undergo quarantine procedures before they were to be used for equestrian training. Brigadier Indunil Ranasinghe, Commandant of SLMA, on behalf of the Commander of the Army, received the gift from Colonel Sheharyar Pervez Butt, Defence Attaché of Pakistan High Commission in Sri Lanka. The Army Commander had brought the need to have horses for equestrian training for the military graduates to the attention of his Pakistani counterpart, when the latter visited the passing out parade at the SLMA in Diyatalawa, since absence of equestrian training in the curricula at SLMA remains a gap, due to non-availability of horses. Pakistan Army Maintain Dominance in National Taekwondo

Pakistan Army continued their dominance on the second day in the 9th Korean Ambassador National Taekwondo Championship here at the Liaquat Gymnasium. Pool fights of 4 X Khyorugi male/female events in fin and fly weight categories were completed. DG PSB Syed Amir Hamza Gillani was the chief guest on the occasion and distributed medals among the top players. Army clinched three gold medals on second day of the championship while Railways earned one gold. In fin weight male category, Ghazanfar Ali of Army claimed gold, Hidayat Ullah of Fata silver and Abdul Raheem Sindh clinched bronze. In fly weight male category, Taufeeq of Railways received gold, Umar of Army silver and Nadeem of Sindh bronze, in fin weight female category, Kiran Bano of Army notched up gold, Tanzeela of Sindh silver and Simra of Railways bronze, in fly weight female category, Maham Aftab of Army grabbed gold, Faiza of Railways silver and Marrayum of HEC bronze. Funeral Prayer Held for Pakistani Peacekeeper Martyred in Congo

Pakistan Army peacekeeper, Subedar Tanveer Hussain, who was killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo on May 7, was buried in his native village in Chakwal on Tuesday. Hussain was killed in a gunfight with a rebel group that ambushed the convoy of a UN peacekeeping mission, according to a press release from the Inter Services Public Relations. A large number of military personnel attended the funeral.Pakistan has demanded an investigation in to the attack. Local officials had said last week that at least two people connected to the attack had been arrested. The Pakistan Army has been partaking in UN peacekeeping missions since 1960, and more than 8,000 Pakistani soldiers are currently deployed in such missions all over the world. 135 Pakistani peacekeepers have been killed in action to date. Presiding over a meeting of top security officials at the 5 Corps headquarters in Karachi, by Sindh Chief Secretary Muhammad Ijaz Chaudhry, Commander Corps 5 Lt. General Muhammad Ijaz Chaudhry, Director General Rangers Sindh Major General Rizwan Akhtar, IGP Sindh Shahid Nadeem Baloch, Sindh Home Secretary Muhammad Waseem, heads of Intelligence Bureau, other intelligence agencies and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officials. General Kayani reviewed the election security arrangements in Karachi and in the rest of Sindh during the meeting wherein the Sindh Police chief, DG Rangers, Sindh, and Commander Corps 5 briefed him on the deployment of military and civilian forces to ensure security during the May 11 polls. Pakistan Army would not go inside Polling Stations: ISPR

As already informed by the Election Commission of Pakistan and the government that army troops will not be present inside polling stations, the army will be in the area as a quick reaction force and its deployment would be for ensuring a secured environment, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Maj Gen Asim Salim Bajwa said on Tuesday. He said this in a statement after a detailed briefing to Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on the security plan for the general election at a high level meeting. Maj Gen Bajwa told the media that the Commander 5 Corps, Sindh Rangers Director General, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, IG, head of Intelligence Bureau in Sindh and heads of intelligence organisations attended the meeting. He said that during the meeting, the COAS stressed the need for implementing the integrated and well-coordinated security plan to ensure holding of peaceful elections.
