In May 2009, the results of a 15-month study commissioned by The Middle East Project of the Human Sciences Research Council at Cape Town, South Africa were published in a report entitled: “Occupation, Colonialism, Apartheid? – a re-assessment of Israel’s practices in the occupied Palestinian territories under international law.” The research study over a 15-month period by a team of international scholars is arguably the most thorough and most authoritative investigation into Israel’s practice of Apartheid in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The study was coordinated by Dr. Virginia Tilley, Chief Research Specialist at the Democracy and Governance Division of the Human Sciences Research Council at Cape Town. Dr Tilley discusses the report’s findings and their implications.

As reactions varied to the speech of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, four patients died in Gaza due to the continued siege. Near Ramallah Israeli soldiers attacked Palestinian and international peace activists during the weekly non-violent protest against the Wall in Ni’lin village. Midnight Saturday, Israeli airforce launched a number of air-to-surface missiles near the Gaza-Egypt border in Palestinian neighborhoods. Local residents reported that four Palestinians were wounded in the attack. Also, this week the Israeli Jerusalem municipality handed out yet more demolition orders to Palestinian families in Al Bustan, an East Jerusalem neighborhood. These stories and more in this week’s update.

Also this week, after nearly two years of isolation from the outside world – courtesy of the Israeli military – ongoing extrajudicial assassinations, acute malnutrition, and a host of other issues facing the Gaza Strip’s 1.5 million residents activists from Brittan organized a massive convoy of goods and services to send to the occupants of the world’s largest open-air prison. We’ll speak to Fatima Mohammadi an activist and coordinator of Viva Palestina about the convoy and the challenges they face.

This week on Crossing The Line: Israel continues it’s nearly two-year closure of the Gaza Strip as thousands of medical patients take to the streets to protest this past week.

With the continued sealing off of all Gaza’s exits how can humanitarian relief be given to the strip’s 1.5 million residents who are facing a grave crisis, and more importantly how can Gazans be allowed to sustain their own futures rather than be wards of the UN. Melinda Borne, program director of United Palestine Appeal will join us to talk about it.

Israel has intensified its attacks on Gaza in the third week of its war, pushing closer to the capital, Gaza City. Foreign journalists are still being barred from entering Gaza to report on what is really happening on the ground. With fatalities closing in on the 1000 mark, Israel has come under severe international criticism for its relentless attacks. Tens of thousands of people demonstrated against Israel over the weekend in cities across the world, including here in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, as we speak, the Free Gaza Movement is sailing yet another ship containing humanitarian supplies to the shores of Gaza. “The Spirit of Humanity,” which departed from Larnaca, Cyprus is the second attempt by the organization of international activists to breech the Israeli naval blockade since the start of Israeli war on Gaza on December 27th, 2008. An earlier attempt was made by activists in a boat called “the Dignity,” which was rammed repeatedly by Israel’s naval ships diverting it away to Lebanon. Ahead of the “Spirit of Humanity’s” departure, the Free Gaza Movement has alerted Israeli authorities of their intention saying their cargo of medical supplies and crew of physicians do not in any way constitute a threat to Israel’s security.

Ten days of aerial bombing on Gaza has caused extensive devastation throughout the territory and is threatening the health and welfare of many children. Most of Gaza is without electricity, and the situation is turning into a massive humanitarian crisis.

UNICEF is calling for a permanent and sustainable humanitarian space in Gaza that includes access for supplies and staff, and the ability to distribute aid and make assessments.

The hospitals in Gaza are overwhelmed by casualties and are running low on medicines. More than half the population of Gaza is made up of children.

One boy’s story
Sixteen-year-old Baha has lived with 16 other members of his family in the basement of his Gaza City home since the bombing began.

“I’m trying to stay alive,” he said in a telephone interview with UNICEF Radio. “There’s no electricity, and as a result of that there is no healthy water to drink.”

“Everybody feels scared,” Baha said, as the sound of bombs and rockets echoed in the background. “Everyone is moving from his house because he’s afraid that his house will be hit from the air or from the land or from the sea.”

Schools closed
The military offensive began in the middle of exam period for students in the region, and schools have been closed ever since. Baha was in the middle of an Arabic exam when the Israeli campaign began.

“We won’t have school for at least two weeks,” he said.

Some Gazans are using schools as shelter. Many homes have been destroyed. Except for some health and food distribution centres, UN offices are closed in Gaza because of security concerns.

This program was produced by UNICEF.

Moussa El-Haddad lives in Gaza with his wife. The bombs have fallen as close as 100 meters from his home. Two nights he was sitting at his desk and the reverberations from a nearby bomb knocked him right out of his chair. He tells Dick Gordon about what life is like for him now that his city is under siege, and about the hope that a new U.S. administration might mean new policies in this troubled region.

Anita Tucker lived in a heavily guarded settlement in Gaza for 29 years. But she has since been moved to the Israeli side and is living in temporary housing with the rest of her family, including her 8 grandchildren. Rockets have fallen very close to her home, but the family has no protection since the housing is temporary. She tells Dick about her hope that she can one day go back to Gaza to live in peace with her former neighbors.

On January 25, 2002 a remarkable group of 52 soldiers and officers of the Israeli army reserves published a quarter-page letter which appeared in the Israeli daily newspaper Ha’aretz. In this letter, they called on their comrades-in-arms to join their act of refusal to serve in the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza. In a manifesto published in a book in 2003 entitled “Breaking Ranks: Refusing to Serve in the West Bank and Gaza Strip,” they further declared: “we shall not continue to fight beyond the 1967 borders in order to dominate, expel, starve, and humiliate an entire people.”

Sherif Fam speaks to Oded Na’aman, a 26 year-old former crew commander in the artillery corps of the Israeli Defense Forces, who spent a year as a soldier and commander in checkpoints all over the West Bank, then became a member of “Breaking the Silence.”

This program was produced by This Week In Palestine for WZBC radio on March 3, 2008.

The word “genocide” is one of the most powerful words used to describe criminal killing and destruction. It has been used to describe the Nazi holocaust, the killing fields of Cambodia, and Rwanda. More recently, Israeli author and historian Ilan Pappe has used this word to describe Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip. Host Naji Ali* speaks with Pappe about why he sees Israel’s ongoing occupation and killing of Palestinians in Gaza as genocide.
