EI: “For us, olive trees are a matter of resistance”

Planting olive trees is a matter of resistance for the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (or APN), a non-profit organization based in Amman, Jordan.

The organization began in 2003 with the goal of replanting one million trees on Palestinian land. By 2008, they achieved this goal and now hope to plant one million more trees in Palestine. They began organizing in 2001 against the wall being proposed by the Israeli government. Since 2002 the illegal construction of the wall has resulted in the confiscation thousands of dunams (a dunam is the equivalent of 1,000 square meters) of Palestinian land, uprooting olive trees as well. APN was initiated by volunteers brought together under the slogan, “They uproot one, we replant ten.”

Rand Wahbeh details her work with the APN and the continued struggle to save the olive trees. She describes exactly what the olive trees mean to the people of Palestine.

Real News: Inside Israeli land grabs

Over the weekend, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed the Israeli government’s support of the settlement movement by planting a tree in each one of the three biggest settlement blocks in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Despite the Israeli government’s support, funding, and approval of settlers, they are often presented in the media as in conflict with the state and the army. In this report, The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky looks at this claim through a recent lecture by Shir Hever, an economist with the Alternative Information Center. A perfect example of the methodology Hever describes can be seen in the settlement of Kedumim which lies adjacent to the Palestinian village of Kaft Qadum. The Real News spoke to the village council of the Palestinian village and the associate mayor of the settlement about how they’ve expanded and the impact this has had on their lives.

Hajo Meyer, an Auschwitz survivor, speaks in Sheffield on 25th January 2010 at a meeting organized by the Sheffield Palestine Solidarity Campaign as part of a tour organized by the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network. Meyer is joined by Dr. Haidar Eid of Al-Aqsa University.

On January 27, Holocaust Remembrance Day, leading politicians from the U.S. and Europe will join in honoring the memory of Jews killed in the Nazi genocide. Yet the immensity of that tragedy is dishonored by the hypocrisy of the ceremonies: those who pay homage to the victims of yesterday’s silence are silent about today’s inhumanity. We say, “Never again!” For anyone. Never again for the people of Gaza. Never again for all those struggling against dehumanization, racism and genocide everywhere, every day.

Dr. Hajo G. Meyer was born in 1924 in Bielefeld, Germany. Not allowed to attend school there after November 1938, he fled to the Netherlands, alone. In I944, after a year in the underground, he was caught and subsequently survived 10 months at Auschwitz. He lives in the Netherlands, where he works as publicist and essayist. A member of IJAN, Hajo Meyer is on the board of the Dutch group “A Different Jewish Voice”, part of the coalition of European Jews for Just Peace. He is the author of three books, on Judaism, Holocaust and Zionism.

Dr. Haidar Eid is a refugee whose parents were expelled from the Zarnouqa village in 1948. Dr. Eid is a member of the PACBI Steering Committee and a co-founder of the One Democratic State Group. He currently lives in Gaza, where he is an Associate Professor of Cultural Studies at Al-Aqsa University.

Real News: Israel’s assassination policy

In recent weeks Israel has escalated its practice of assassinations in the West Bank and Gaza. At the end of December, Israeli special forces broke into the Nablus homes of Anan Subih, Raed Surkaji, and Ghassan Abu Sharekh and killed them. Official Israeli sources linked the three to the killing of Israeli settler Meir Avshalom Hai who was killed while driving to the illegal outpost in which he lived. The killings are the latest in Israel’s long-time practice of assassinations, illegal under international law. Many contradictory reports have surfaced over the December 26 assassinations. The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky spoke to the families of two of the killed.

Ehab told us about how Egyptian authorities had stopped the 1400 delegates from being able to participate in the March and the various protest actions delegates had taken around Cairo. He also explained the difficulties for the organizers in trying to handle the situation and also take care of the delegates who found themselves stranded in Cairo. He commented on the Final Declaration issued just a few days earlier that stressed support for the Gazan people and for the global Boycott Israel movement, and noted that the event had succeeded in solidifying an international support network.

AIC: The Palestine Kairos Document

With publication of the Palestine Kairos Document, the Alternative Information Center interviewed Reverend Dr. Naim Ateek, a co-signatory of the document and founder of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center based in Jerusalem.

The Palestine Kairos Document, issued at a 11 December meeting in Bethlehem, echoes a similar summons issued by South African churches in the mid-1980s at the height of repression under the apartheid regime. That call served to galvanize churches and the wider public in a concerted effort that eventually brought the end of apartheid.

The authors of the Kairos Palestine Document believe that current efforts in the Middle East are confined to managing the crisis rather than finding pertinent and long term solutions to the crisis.

They reject any use of the Bible to legitimize or support political options and positions that are based upon injustice.

Through the logic of peaceful resistance, the authors believe that resistance is as much a right as it is a duty, as it has the potential to hasten the time of reconciliation. Reverend Dr. Ateek reviews the background and ideas behind the Palestine Kairos Document in this interview.

Real News: Gaza Freedom March in Israel

For months international, Israeli, and Palestinian activists have been planning the Gaza Freedom March. Organizers hoped an international delegation of 1300 activists from around the world would break the siege on Gaza by marching through Gaza to the northern border and through the Erez crossing, then joining the Israeli march. The Real News reporters attended the Israeli side of the protest, and though the Egyptian government prevented the activists from entering Gaza, hundreds gathered to raise awareness of the desperate situation in Gaza a year after Operation Cast Lead.
