He says there are two ways to deal with a drug addict, you can either help them get more drugs, and this may be perceived as care, but it is not friendship. A real friend helps the drug addict get over their addiction. Levy says the Jewish lobby has decided to take the former route, but he is hoping that the United States and the Obama Administration will take the latter.

The protest in Nilin was held today to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which has been declared an international day of action against Israel’s barrier. 300 demonstrators managed to topple a part of the eight-meter tall concrete wall that cuts through the village’s land. Since Israel began its construction in the year 2002, this is the first time demonstrators succeeded in toppling a part of Israel’s apartheid wall. One of the demonstrators, Moheeb Khawaja, said during the protest: “Twenty years ago no one had thought the monster that divided Berlin into two could be brought down, but in only two days in November, it did. Today we have proven that this can also be done here and now. It is our land beyond this wall, and we will not give up on it. We will win for a simple reason – justice is on our side.”

The third annual Boston Palestine Film Festival, already in progress, continues through Sunday, November 1, 2009. Each day there are several different films, some short, some feature-length. Their showings are distributed among three different venues including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard, and Kendall Square Theatre in Cambridge.

We decided that it might be worthwhile to hear descriptions of some of the films yet to run. We are honored that BPFF’s distinguished coordinator, Salma Abu Ayyash, agreed to spend time with us describing these fabulous films and the stories and the people behind them. It is remarkable what we can learn of the lives and the suffering of Palestinians through the medium of their own art.

This program was produced by This Week in Palestine for October 25, 2009.

Outgoing General Assembly prez tells niece, after UN inaction on Gaza, “I feel like I’m in a cesspool”. “The question of Palestine remains the most serious political and human rights problem on the agenda of the United Nations since its creation,” says outgoing General Assembly President Miguel d’Escoto. D’Escoto points to the UN’s failure to lift the two-year-old blockade on Gaza being maintained by Israel and Egypt as a clear example of the organization’s decadence. This despite the fact that all the organs of the UN have passed resolutions demanding the blockade be lifted, but none of the members with influence have done anything to force compliance, and according to d’Escoto, they are quite comfortable with this.

She is a member of CODEPINK that has been organizing visits to Gaza for some of the same reasons, to help Americans view Palestinians as human beings rather than ‘militants’ as often defined by the corporate press.

Ridgely Fuller explains some of her reasons for visiting Gaza in June and talks about the continued impact of Israel’s air attacks and ground invasion during the winter of 2009.

Lia Tarachansky speaks to Fatou Bensouda, the Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) about the Palestinian Authority’s appeal to join the group of nations over which the court has jurisdiction. Bensouda says that before the ICC can investigate the perpetration of war crimes during Israel’s recent attack on Gaza, the court would have to rule on whether it has jurisdiction in the Palestinian Territories. For that, there would have to be clear borders identified, a task the UN would have to take on. Once the court rules on jurisdiction it would be able to prosecute anyone who committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide within the territory, even if (such as in the case of Israel) the perpetrator is not part of the International Court.
