One of the key parts of Israel’s well-planned media narrative in Gaza is that they are carefully targeting attacks and that there is no humanitarian crisis there which isn’t attributable to the mis-management of the elected Hamas government. President Shimon Peres repeated the claim this Sunday on ABC News “This Week with George Stephanopoulos”.

John Ging, the head of the UN relief agency in Gaza, described the situation there as “inhuman”.

We have a catastrophe unfolding in Gaza for the civilian population,” he said. “The people of Gaza City and the north now have no water. That comes on top of having no electricity. They’re trapped, they’re traumatised, they’re terrorised by this situation.

They’re in their homes. They’re not safe. They’re being killed and injured in large numbers, and they have no end in sight. The inhumanity of this situation, the lack of action to bring this to an end, is bewildering to them.

The whole infrastructure of the future state of Palestine is being destroyed. Blowing up the parliament building. That’s the parliament of Palestine. That’s not a Hamas building. The president’s compound is for the president of Palestine. Schools, mosques.

Providing a summary of the events of the past week from the West Bank and Israel, Jesse Rosenfeld, freelance journalist based in Ramallah and Tel Aviv speaks to the Gaza attack. He connects the upcoming Israeli election to the motivation behind the bombing of Gaza which in the past week killed 420 and injured over 1300. Rosenfeld says Ehud Barak decided to carry out Operation Cast Lead, the name given to the attack, at this time to boost his votes for the February 10th election. During election years, politicians known to take the most hard-line position against Palestinians tend to gain more seats in the Israeli Knesset. Operation Cast Lead now threatens escalate into a ground invasion as Israel amasses its troops and tanks at the Gaza border.

As the fifth day of Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip begins, Rafah and Gaza City, the two main targets, have witnessed hundreds of deaths. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas blames Hamas, the ruling party in Gaza, for inciting Israel’s attack. Hamas, vows to keep shelling Southern Israel with rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. Lia Tarachansky spoke to Fida Qishta in Rafah, located in Southern Gaza. Qishta reports one of the first targets of the Israeli bombardment were the tunnels dug by Palestinians under the wall, which separates Rafah in two, half in Palestine and half in Egypt. These tunnels, says Qishta, have been used since the beginning of the siege to smuggle food, and according to Israel, weapons. Qishta also reports of the wall being breached by Palestinians desperate to escape to Egypt. Though unsuccessful, this is the fifth attempt since the beginning of the second Intifadah to breach it.

As Palestinian villagers decide to take dismantling the Israeli occupation into their own hands, the Real News Network’s Lia Tarachansky speaks to Jesse Rosenfeld on segregation and the West Bank. Checkpoints and roadblocks play a key role in separating Palestinians from Israelis and Israeli appropriated areas, from commercial areas, and from each other. Since the beginning of the second Intifadah in September 2000 the number of checkpoints in the West Bank increased to over 500. In an act of resistance, the International Solidarity Movement organized a symbolic action of dismantling four roadblocks segregating four villages from each other. Hours after the protest Israeli bulldozers replaced two. This action comes days after former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told in a Yediot Ahronot interview he believes Israel must withdraw from most of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The division of Palestinian land within the West Bank, has divided the West Bank, as have the series of roads that connect settlements but bypass Palestinian villages, towns, refugee camps. The checkpoints—imagine 567 checkpoints, according to the United Nations, in this tiny territory the size of the US state of Delaware. It’s insane.”

Following a dramatic escalation of violence in Gaza, in which reportedly over 120 Palestinians were killed, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited the region in what observers call an attempt to salvage Mideast peace talks. The Real News spoke to Osamah Khalil in Cairo.

After almost 60 years in Lebanon, Palestinian refugees are still facing harsh conditions in their daily lives. They suffer from severe housing conditions in the refugee camps, poverty, racism and many forms of social, political and legal discrimination. In dozens of jobs, especially in those requiring special skills and higher education, Palestinians are forbidden to work. One result of this discriminating policy is being treated in this short film: many well-educated refugees can’t find jobs and therefore end up as taxi drivers, day laborers or shopkeepers.

This short film was produced in Bourj Ash-Shamali refugee camp, near Sour (south Lebanon). Bourj Ash-Shamali hosts 20,000 Palestinian refugees, mostly from the north of Palestine. Thousands of its residents work in day labor, meaning: hard work, low wages, no job and therefore no income security.

This film was produced by the a-films collective on November 26, 2007.

Workers arriving at the Caterpillar – Perkins factory in Irlam, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, this morning were surprised by a 30 foot yellow banner with an acrylic image of a Palestinian, head in hands, whose house is being demolished by a Cat bulldozer while an Israeli soldier stands guard. The spray-painted text proclaims “Stop Caterpillar… Palestine… House Demolitions… Apartheid Wall… Perkins… 100% owned by Caterpillar… Israeli Tank Deal”.

It was all too much for some – they kept their windows firmly sealed while staring straight ahead. Others were interested but scared that someone might notice, a few shouted at us and declined any discussion. But quite a number, especially those not driving a Jag, perhaps even walking to work, were curious enough to take our leaflet and the War on Want Shareholders anti-Report. Some knew nothing about their company’s role in Palestine and thanked us for the information. Some knew of the issues and agreed with us completely. Some, it seems, were embarrassed to go into work through our line.

Residents of Bil’in village, together with international and Israeli activists, chain themselves to olive trees that are to be uprooted to make way for the Israeli Apartheid Wall. The wall is currently being constructed in many areas of Palestine. For Bil’in it will result in the annexation of 2,400 dunums of land – over 50% of the land belonging to the village. This will facilitate massive Israeli settlement expansion east of the Green Line.

Bil’in has carried out a series of non-violent protests against this land theft, and demonstrations are held at least once a week, usually more. The Israeli military has used excessive force against the demonstrators, regularly firing tear gas, rubber coated metal bullets, sound bombs and live ammunition at unarmed civilians peacefully protesting. Many people have been injured and arrested. In other areas of Palestine people have been killed because they have protested against the wall, including two children who were shot dead on the same day that this video was filmed, a short distance away in Beit Liqya.

Professor Salman H. Abu-Sitta of the London-based Palestine Land Society gives a personal account of how he became a refugee in Palestine in 1948. Using data from his research, Abu-Sitta shows how over 600 Palestinian villages were systematically depopulated by the advancing Israeli forces, leaving many others dismembered by an arbitrary cease-fire line. With maps and demographic statistics, Abu-Sitta shows that, in effect, Zionist policies were an ethnic cleansing campaign that resulted in a massive transfer of native Palestinians to the countries bordering Israel, where thousands remain within 100 miles from their original communities.

Joel Beinin, one of the country’s leading authorities on the Middle East, discusses the current dynamics of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Now that the radical Hamas party has won most of what political power there is to be had in Palestine and Ariel Sharon has left the political stage in Israel, will anything change? What would be necessary for there to be any major changes in the situation? How does U.S. military support for Israel and the continuing U.S. occupation of Iraq factor in?

Professor Beinin discusses these questions and many more in a lively discussion with Peninsula Peace and Justice Center director Paul George and the studio audience. This is an illuminating exploration of a region that remains one of the most volatile places on earth.

The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) group in Rafah, Gaza Strip in 2003 saw two of its volunteers killed by the Israeli military. Rachel Corrie was crushed under an armored Caterpillar D9 bulldozer as she tried to prevent the demolition of a pharmacist’s home.

In this talk, Charles Smith, professor of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona, gives an account of the history of Palestine and Israel. In the first part Smith describes the period from the first wave of Zionist immigrants up to the end of the British mandate in 1948. Smith then takes us from the foundation of the State of Israel to the 1967 war and the occupation of the West Bank. In the third segment, Smith covers the 1967 and 1973 wars, the land-for-peace agreement with Egypt up to the Olso Accords and the first and second intifadas.

On July 17, 2007, volunteers at the Summer Rebuilding Camp sponsored by ICAHD-USA witnessed the Israeli government demolish a nearby Palestinian family’s house. Every year the Israeli government demolishes around 300 Palestinian houses in order to expand illegal Israeli settlement construction. This policy of settlement expansion, land confiscation, and demolition of Palestinian houses forms the biggest obstacle to peace. ICAHD-USA is working to end these policies.

Last week we introduced you to the Palestinians of the Al-Waleed Camp, just a few of the millions of refugees from the war and ongoing violence in Iraq. This week we’ll look a little more closely at life in this desert encampment, and hear a little bit about how the Palestinian Authority has performed in supporting their citizens who, until recently, were living quite peaceably in Iraq.

The Palestinian citizens now trapped in Al-Waleed Camp accuse the Palestinian Authority of using their suffering to play political games with Israel. The Palestinian Authority announced that it would accept its citizens back in the West Bank. As the situation worsens, there is no immediate prospect of a solution. The only proposal thus far, an offer by the Palestinian Authority to take in the refugees, was rejected by Israel.

However, the refugees express the feeling that the situation is not as simplistic as it seems. They claim that other states, particularly in Europe, have since expressed willingness to resettle them, but that the PA refuses to accept these solutions, preferring to leave their citizens in the desert, pawns in a political game with Israel.

As death tolls and temperatures rise in Baghdad, there are more than 1400 Palestinians stranded in a purgatory between Syria and Iraq. These Palestinians find themselves not only reviled and targeted in Baghdad, where many have lived for the past 60 years. Now they live in tents in the desert, left to wonder why none of the world’s governments will give them safe passage. Furthermore, so they claim, when the rare offer of resettlement comes, they’re left waiting desperately, hoping the government of “their country,” the Palestinian Authority, will permit the move. Many claim the PA is using them as just another pawn in a shell game of victimhood, distraction, and deal-making.

In part one of a two part series, these Palestinians (or are they Iraqis?) speak about desperate circumstances in Baghdad, and the reasons they fled the country they called home for generations. After they fled Baghdad, they found their circumstances still desperate, and perhaps in some ways worse. Syria has closed its borders to Palestinians, Jordan is closed to Palestinians and Iraqis alike.
