Nilin markes 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall by taking down the wall on their land

The protest in Nilin was held today to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which has been declared an international day of action against Israel’s barrier. 300 demonstrators managed to topple a part of the eight-meter tall concrete wall that cuts through the village’s land. Since Israel began its construction in the year 2002, this is the first time demonstrators succeeded in toppling a part of Israel’s apartheid wall. One of the demonstrators, Moheeb Khawaja, said during the protest: “Twenty years ago no one had thought the monster that divided Berlin into two could be brought down, but in only two days in November, it did. Today we have proven that this can also be done here and now. It is our land beyond this wall, and we will not give up on it. We will win for a simple reason – justice is on our side.”

Lia Tarachansky speaks to Fatou Bensouda, the Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) about the Palestinian Authority’s appeal to join the group of nations over which the court has jurisdiction. Bensouda says that before the ICC can investigate the perpetration of war crimes during Israel’s recent attack on Gaza, the court would have to rule on whether it has jurisdiction in the Palestinian Territories. For that, there would have to be clear borders identified, a task the UN would have to take on. Once the court rules on jurisdiction it would be able to prosecute anyone who committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide within the territory, even if (such as in the case of Israel) the perpetrator is not part of the International Court.

Real News: Homeless in East Jerusalem

On August 2nd, Israeli riot and border police evicted two Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem, claiming the land on which their houses were built belongs to Jews. The court ruling was the result of a Jewish settlers’ association claiming there were Jewish inhabitants in the region in the 1930s. The Real News spoke to the evicted families, and to Stephen Lendman, Research Associate at the Center for Research on Globalization about whether the same could happen to Jewish families.

For the last three months, Ta’ayush activists have been accompanying Palestinian farmers from Safa to their lands just below the settlement of Bat Ayin. Since a child from the settlement was murdered in April, settlers have been consistently attacking Palestinians when they attempt to work in their fields, as well as burning the fields themselves – all under the nose of the IDF, which has done nothing to prevent the crimes or punish them. Ta’ayush activists return to the area.

A picnic in the West Bank

Members of the peace organization, Ta’ayush, set out to have a picnic at an illegal outpost called Givat Hadegal next to the settlement of Susya in the southern West Bank. On the way to the picnic they were stopped at the Gilo checkpoint, held for an hour for no reason and then told to go home. After arriving via a different checkpoint and beginning the picnic in protest of the outpost, three people were arrested and the group was removed from the area by a closed military zone order.

One of the key parts of Israel’s well-planned media narrative in Gaza is that they are carefully targeting attacks and that there is no humanitarian crisis there which isn’t attributable to the mis-management of the elected Hamas government. President Shimon Peres repeated the claim this Sunday on ABC News “This Week with George Stephanopoulos”.

John Ging, the head of the UN relief agency in Gaza, described the situation there as “inhuman”.

We have a catastrophe unfolding in Gaza for the civilian population,” he said. “The people of Gaza City and the north now have no water. That comes on top of having no electricity. They’re trapped, they’re traumatised, they’re terrorised by this situation.

They’re in their homes. They’re not safe. They’re being killed and injured in large numbers, and they have no end in sight. The inhumanity of this situation, the lack of action to bring this to an end, is bewildering to them.

The whole infrastructure of the future state of Palestine is being destroyed. Blowing up the parliament building. That’s the parliament of Palestine. That’s not a Hamas building. The president’s compound is for the president of Palestine. Schools, mosques.

Real News: Rafah – Report from the ground

As the fifth day of Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip begins, Rafah and Gaza City, the two main targets, have witnessed hundreds of deaths. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas blames Hamas, the ruling party in Gaza, for inciting Israel’s attack. Hamas, vows to keep shelling Southern Israel with rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. Lia Tarachansky spoke to Fida Qishta in Rafah, located in Southern Gaza. Qishta reports one of the first targets of the Israeli bombardment were the tunnels dug by Palestinians under the wall, which separates Rafah in two, half in Palestine and half in Egypt. These tunnels, says Qishta, have been used since the beginning of the siege to smuggle food, and according to Israel, weapons. Qishta also reports of the wall being breached by Palestinians desperate to escape to Egypt. Though unsuccessful, this is the fifth attempt since the beginning of the second Intifadah to breach it.

Since the beginning of the second Intifadah in September 2000 the number of checkpoints in the West Bank increased to over 500. In an act of resistance, the International Solidarity Movement organized a symbolic action of dismantling four roadblocks segregating four villages from each other. Hours after the protest Israeli bulldozers replaced two. This action comes days after former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told in a Yediot Ahronot interview he believes Israel must withdraw from most of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Free Gaza: Report from S.S. Liberty

Israel-Palestine: Why Today`s Crisis is Rooted in the Denials of Yesterday

Sylvain Cypel joined the French daily newspaper Le Monde (meaning The World) as editor-in-chief in 1998, following a five-year tenure as editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine Courrier International.

From 1990 to 1991 he served as deputy editor of the monthly economic magazine Mensuel, and from 1989-1990 he held the same post at the monthly supplement to the economic daily newspaper Les Echos. Cypel worked as a freelance journalist for the public television network France 2, the daily newspaper Lib?ration and other media outlets between 1986 and 1988. From 1978 to 1985 he worked for the daily paper Le Matin de Paris, where he was responsible for reporters covering the Middle East.

Cypel holds BA degrees in sociology, contemporary history and international relations. He earned his last degree at the University of Jerusalem.

Cypel is the author of Walled: Israeli Society at an Impasse (2006, Other Press), which looks at the history of thought in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Mideast observers noted Rice’s refusal to use the word “ceasefire” in the ongoing crisis between Israel and Hamas, calling into question whether the deadlock would be solved by a negotiated ceasefire or by other means. House demolition in Anata, Palestine

On July 17, 2007, volunteers at the Summer Rebuilding Camp sponsored by ICAHD-USA witnessed the Israeli government demolish a nearby Palestinian family’s house. Every year the Israeli government demolishes around 300 Palestinian houses in order to expand illegal Israeli settlement construction. This policy of settlement expansion, land confiscation, and demolition of Palestinian houses forms the biggest obstacle to peace. ICAHD-USA is working to end these policies.
