1) If you are not familiar with the destination, check a map. Either you buy one at a local bookstore or you view online at Google Maps or WikiMapia, knowing where to go will really help you know that taxi drivers are not wasting your time and money trying to increase the fare by roaming around places you shouldn’t be on.

2) Bring extra coins / loose change. Unlike in provincial cities like Cagayan de Oro City, taxi drivers rarely or never give any change. Say the taxi meter shows PhP90 and have PhP100 cash, they might not give you the 10 pesos change. How much more if the meter shows 92.50? To avoid paying the rounded amount, bring at least the following: one 10-peso coin, 5 pieces of 1-peso coins and at least 2 pcs. of 25-centavo coins.

3) Make sure the taxi meter is on, and make sure you check the meter once in a while. Some crazy drivers have a device installed on their meters that will jump the price from say, PhP50 to PhP70 when you’re not looking. I know this because my sister found this out when riding on a taxi to work. Remember, there are two kinds of taxis, one is the regular taxi with a flag down rate of PhP30 and a incremental charge of PhP2.50 and a yellow airport taxi with a flag down rate of PhP70 and an incremental charge of PhP4.00.

4) Some taxis are not metered. Some airport taxis charge a fixed rate, depending on the destination, which is approved by the Land Transportation Franchise and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). But there are other taxi drivers who will ask you to pay a certain amount instead of using a meter (sometimes double the actual meter rate) and I suggest you get out of the taxi right away, specially if there are a lot other taxis in the area.

5) Write down the plate number and operator number of the taxi. This will be very handy when you encounter a taxi driver trying to rip you off. When it happens to you (which I hope it won’t), call the operator and report the incident. You may also text LTFRB and other government agencies (see #10).

6) Choose a random taxi when riding. Avoid taxis that are waiting around the corner and starts to come and take your ride. Chances are they could be waiting for someone to rip off or worse, be robbed by someone else waiting on the next corner.

7) Make sure the doors are locked. Sometimes robbers approach a taxi and check of the doors are unlocked. Keep doors locked and avoid opening the windows at all times.

8) Avoid sitting on the passenger seat. There is a higher chance of a passenger killed in a car accident when sitting on a passenger seat than seating at the back. If you want to seat on the passenger seat, always keep your seat belts fastened. There are a lot of crazy, reckless drivers out there and there are those who even drive under the influence or too sleepy to drive.

9) Don’t let the driver know you don’t know which route to take. Read tip #1, read the map. Asking the driver how to go to a certain destination will give them the idea that you are not familiar with the streets and some will take advantage and take you on a seemly endless turns around the area until you arrive. Let him know that you know where you are going and give him specific instructions which road to take.

10) Report abusive taxi drivers. You may call any or all of the following numbers to file a complaint.

• LTFRB Hotline= 0921-4487777
• LTO Hotline = 921-9072
• Call the taxi operator.

11) Check your valuables before you leave. Make sure you still have your cellphones, credit cards, wallets and other valuables with you before you get off the taxi. Some drivers return these items but most of the time they don’t. Unfortunately, it’s finders keepers, losers weepers.

12) Avoid sleeping on the taxi when you’re alone with the driver. When you return home from work, try to stay awake and alert at all times. When you’re sleeping, taxi drivers can take any route they want to keep the taxi meter running or worse, they will take you to a secluded and dangerous place.
