Pando Channels: Your Web DVR

Pando doesn't have to sit idle when you don't have any large files to download or send. One of the most entertaining uses of Pando is as your personal Web DVR.

Peruse the list of Pando Channels. In case you haven't looked, we're always adding great new Web channels. There's no junk whatsoever. All channels are handpicked by Pando staff.

Subscribe with a single click from the Channel page. Pando will download new episodes the second they hit the Web. Unsubscribing is simple too. Just get yourself to the Channel management page: From the Options menu on the Pando app, select Channels, then highlight the channel you want to dump, and select unsubscribe.

No hard-disk hogging. When you subscribe to a channel, Pando's default setting is to save just three episodes. When new ones arrive, Pando automatically deletes the old ones! You can set Pando to save more (or less) episodes at a time on the Channel management page we directed you to above.
Keep your faves. Since Pando is truly an incredible housekeeper, make sure to mark the episodes you don't want Pando to sweep away. Under the Channels tab on the app, highlight the episode, and click the little pushpin icon on the bottom nav.

Pando 1.6 is Here

We're excited to announce the availability of our new version; Pando 1.6. This latest release includes:

BitTorrent™ Support: Download regular torrent-based files and share them via email, IM or the Web with the ease and speed of Pando. Pando now handles .torrent and .pando files. More info.
Easier Sharing: One of the first new features you'll notice is the "Share New" button, which has replaced "Send". Clicking "Share New" lets you choose from a drop-down menu whether you would like to share via Email, IM or the Web. "Share" buttons also appear now next to each package.

Right-Click Menu (Windows only) - Right-clicking a package enables you to quickly share it or mark it as "opened".
Better Channel Management: It's now even easier to manage your favorite Pando channels. From the new "Channels" tab and the dedicated channel file storage options to the easier subscription process and episode alerts in your system tray, we've made managing your channels like everything else in Pando; easy! Send-to-Forum: Post your packages to any forum that supports BBCode. This feature was added to the "Send-to-Web drop-down menu.

As we mentioned in last month's newsletter, we're really excited about our new Channel Directory, and we keep adding more and more great content everyday! For a refresher on how to subscribe to Pando-powered Internet TV, go here.

Introducing

With so much content continually being added to our Channel Directory, we'd like to take a moment to highlight one of our newest channels, Project Pedal. This is a personal favorite for many of us at Team Pando. We've included the first episode below so that you can check it out.This award winning documentary, currently nominated for the Flux 2007 iPod Film Festival, is one of the most compelling Internet TV shows on the web.

A quick summary: This documentary will bookend with the Pacific and Atlantic oceans... anchored to a small group's cross country trip and focusing on the inspiring people that cross their path and a vlog will be posted that will share stories from these people met along the way - as well as the main cast and the occasional behind-the-scenes footage. In the end, the bi-product of these vlogs will be used for a feature length documentary.The end-goal of this project, both in it's vlog and documentary form, is to share people's reasons and motivations behind their trip. Most importantly to share what makes or drives a person to leave everything behind and to understand what they each take away from this overwhelming and painful journey.

The journey is coming down to its last two months and we plan to update you over next few newsletters on how it goes. So enjoy this inaugural episode, and catch up on the rest by subscribing now.

A Story of Healing

For the first time in history, an Academy Award® winning film is being licensed under a Creative Commons License. In 1997, a Dewey-Obenchain film crew accompanied an Interplast volunteer surgical team to An Giang province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. The filmmakers donated their services to document the team’s experiences and produce “A Story of Healing,” which earned the 1997 Academy Award® for best documentary, short subject. The 28-minute film is followed by a short epilogue (after the credits) which follows-up on two patients 16 months after their surgeries.

Ten years later, Interplast is proud to announce that “A Story of Healing,” has been released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommerical-No Derivatives license (by-nc-nd) and is being made available for free online. Pando Networks has partnered with Interplast to provide the full-rez version available for downloading and sharing. To learn more about Interplast, please go to www.interplast.org. With the release of Version 1.5, we here at Pando are really proud (and really excited) to introduce a new feature that we believe will usher in a new era for us and our users - Pando Channels. With Pando Channels, you can now subscribe to, download and share hi-res, Pando-powered Internet TV and audio shows directly with Pando. We’ve added a new tab specifically for these channels and as usual, made it one-click easy to share any episode via email, IM and the Web.

In order to get you started we've highlighted a few of our featured channels with some great content for you to check out. Just click on the "Subscribe" buttons in the boxes below and follow the instructions to begin receiving direct feeds in your Pando Channels Tab. New Ways to Share — The Scoop on Pando Premium

no-holds-barred discussion about Pando Premium, what are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Yaron: Making Pando-able moments with my lovely wife Orly.

SD@P: For those one or maybe two people who didn’t read last month’s newsletter, what are Pando Premium services?

Yaron: Think “Pando on steroids." Bigger files, more storage, no expiration, faster downloads for your recipients and no ads. We’ve got three premium (for pay) account types: Pando Plus, Pro and Publisher and last I checked, they’re all cheaper than steroids.

SD@P: Exactly how much “faster” is a Premium account? And is this speed increase at the expense of people with free accounts?

Yaron: Supacrazyfast. No seriously, exact transfer rates depend on each person’s specific networking environment but we’ve reserved dedicated premium servers for packages published with a premium account. These super-servers upload and download your premium packages faster than our regular servers because they are dedicated to a few people, rather than being shared by all 3 million free users of Pando. Don’t fret Pando friends, Pando’s free version will remain true to its popular reputation as the fastest way to transfer big files online today.

SD@P: Will Pando always have a free version? Or is this the beginning of everyone having to pay?

Yaron: Absolutely. Pando will always be free. That’s the whole idea behind Pando and peer-to-peer technology in general. You’re already paying enough for your broadband Internet connection; you shouldn’t have to pay to transfer files. Pando was built to empower everyone to unleash their hi-res personal media (photos, videos, music, etc) by sharing their bandwidth, not their wallets. Since we’ve received so many requests for commercial use of Pando, with even more capacity and better performance, we introduced our premium accounts to cater to a select group of power users, professionals and publishers, but Pando itself is and will always be, 100% free. You’re more than welcome to donate to my Valentines Day gift fund though. ;)

Sending Prettier Packages

You wrap your presents; why not make your Pando "Packages" more attractive? Packages can be customized with descriptions and thumbnails, adding a unique personality to every package you send.

But Can Granny Play the Video?

If you tried to email home video before Pando, you'll remember the name of the game was compression. No matter how gloriously large your monitor, the end result was a video that played at the size of a postage stamp.

Now that you have Pando, you can send video that can play at full-screen and high resolution. But the number of video formats can be dizzying. What's the best format to use so the most people can enjoy the holiday videos you share?

"The video format that I'd recommend is MPEG-4," says Laird Popkin, Pando's co-founder and CTO, "It's a high-quality format that is supported by both Mac OS X (QuickTime) and Windows (Windows Media Player)."

As a side note, if you have been sent a video file that you're having trouble playing, and you already have the latest versions of QuickTime and Windows Media Player installed, we recommend installing "VLC Media Player" (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), a free and very powerful media player that runs on Windows and Mac and plays nearly every popular video format.

Podcasters Prefer Pando

Although only one of them is officially named Joe, Ed Maurer and Joseph Hershey produce a podcast called "Two Guys Named Joe: Tech for the Average Joe." The guys offer their listeners useful advice, interspersed with a few jokes, insults and the occasional expletive. Recently they discovered Pando when Ed needed to get a rough edit of their podcast to Joe and didn't want to deliver the file in the usual way: by driving to Joe's house. We're glad to have helped, but we hope "the Joes" start using Pando to RSS-deliver their podcast, too. Stay tuned!

"When doing a podcast with someone else, the problem eventually arises when you need to send a huge audio file of a terrific podcast to that other person. So how do you do it? Email is too slow or inevitably you have a file size limit. You can pay for a service like EVault, but it costs an arm and a leg. Along comes Pando and our problems are solved... I am sold on its usefulness for podcasters or others who need to share large files. Power to the Pando!"
