Panoramio Contest Updated

Each month Panoramio hosts a contest for the members of our photo community. The aim of the contest is to have fun with the proposed categories and to get a challenge in your photo excursions.

The contest had historically 4 categories, and starting this year we changed the process to offer new categories each month. We have also made some changes in the Site, like the new Landing page, that allow us to sponsor the best photos of the contest directly in Panoramio.

This month we have changed the prizes so the contest is even more attractive. The contest will have 5 runner-up that will have their photos sponsored in the landing page, and a first and a second prize that can win (conditions apply) the following prizes:

First Prize: Sony NEX-7 Interchangeable lens digital camera

Second Prize: Lumix TS3/FT3 waterproof digital camera

We have also done a couple of changes in the Contest Winners page so the best photos from the contest are very nicely displayed!

Check out this month's categories and try your best. You may also want to join the community to decide which photo gets more votes. In that case, visit the voting page and choose the ones you like the most.

Easily snap your photos to a location in Panoramio

Earlier this year we improved the uploader tool in Panoramio to make the process faster and more intuitive. Since then, members of the Panoramio photo-sharing community have been simply dragging and dropping their photos to the locations where they were taken, and working together to create a world map of beautiful images.

Today, we’re announcing some improvements to help you even more easily geo-tag your photos in Panoramio. You can now snap your photos to a place on the map. When searching for your photo location, you’ll see a list of suggested places where your photo may have been taken, and you can click “Snap to this place” to select the right location. We’ve also added the ability for users to indicate that a photo was taken indoors. These additional details about where a photo was taken provide all users with more useful information and context.

If you’re not familiar with Panoramio and how it works, get a sense for this powerful user tool by checking out the brief video below. Panoramio is a community site for photos of various places, with the option to share and explore the photos in Google Maps and Google Earth.

Enjoy the improved features in Panoramio and we look forward to seeing more of your photos.

Explore: Panoramio's Approach to Photo Browsing

Share and Explore the world in photos. This is what Panoramio is all about.

We started 2012 with a revamp of the sharing experience in Panoramio with the new Panoramio uploader, so it was about time to change the exploring story with the new Panoramio photo explorer.

The new Panoramio photo explorer has many entry points. You can access it by clicking in a photo from a photo page, you can also access it from any photo from the photo list in Panoramio Groups, or by clicking the “Explore” button from the user page and tags page, with many more options to come. The photo explorer allows you to navigate between photos from a group, photos from a user or photos with a specific tag.

Explore Panoramio photos
Imagine you are exploring photos of Barcelona. If you find a photo you like a lot, you may want to see more from that photographer. In that case -- just click “Change” and select the photographer’s name. Later, while exploring this photographer, maybe you will find a photo made with a peculiar technique; you click “Change” and see if the photo is in a group that you could explore, or a specific tag you are interested in. And this can go on without end.

Lean back and enjoy
On top of exploring and navigating, the new photo explorer provides you with a lean back experience with millions of amazing photos. Do you have guests for dinner and want to impress them with an amazing frame in your living-room? Then look for your favorite combination of photos in groups, tags or Panoramio photographers and set up the photo explorer in Slideshow mode with full screen view in your TV. You can configure it so photos change every 2sec, 5sec, 10sec, 1min or 5min.

Share your photos with your friends
Do you want to share your latest trip with your friends? Give a tag to the photos you took, open the tag page (example: album of my trip to Schwyz), and click on “Explore” to open the photo explorer. All the URLs can be shared, so just copy it from the browser and send it to your friends.

View photos of the world with the Panoramio App on your Google TV

I came across the geo-tagged photos from Panoramio a while ago when I was looking up a place on the Google Maps. They triggered my interest and I immediately visited Panoramio’s website to view more photos. I searched for any place that came to my mind and saw amazing pictures taken by photographers who had visited those places and shared them on Panoramio. With Google TV and the possibilities it provides, I thought it would be cool to have an app to browse photos from Panoramio right on my TV.

So I made one!

The app provides a list of cool places around the world that might fuel your travel inspirations.

Arctic Photowalk - Ilulissat, Greenland

It’s a great pleasure to be able to invite you to the first Panoramio/Google+ Photowalk in the arctic circle! On the 24th of March we are arranging a Photowalk together with Ilulissat Icefjord with special focus on Ilulissat Icefjord. At this time of the year the Icefjord is full of icebergs from one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world, Sermeq Kujalleq, and has since 2004 been in the UNESCO World Heritage List. We hope the weather will behave on the day, where we plan to meet in the early afternoon in Ilulissat, and walk out to the Icefjord and take pictures on the way.

Participants on the day will be given the details on how to upload their photos from the walk to this group in Panoramio, that we created for the photowalk. All photos uploaded to the group are able to participate in the competition with some very nice prizes, sponsored by Panoramio.
You can find more information about the photowalk on our Google+ Page, where we will also post the best pictures after the walk.

If you are from Ilulissat, or you are visiting that day, then you can sign up via our Google+ Page. We also hope our Panoramio members living in Ilulissat wants to come along.

Panoramio forum: Edit posts

Ever since we migrated the Panoramio forum Edit posts has been the top requested feature, and I am extremely happy to announce that we are making it available today. Every member of the forum will be able to edit his own posts and at the same time Forum moderators will be able to edit everyones posts.
To edit a post follow the "Post reply" menu and click on "Edit":

The history of Edited posts is tracked in the lower-right side of the post so it will always be visible whether the post was original or has been edited by the author or a moderator and when:

I hope this new feature makes the forum more useful and fun for everyone. And as always... happy to hear your feedback on this feature in the Panoramio forum.

Tagging Panoramio Photos

On January the 19th, we introduced the new Panoramio Uploader to the Panoramio Community.

With the new uploader we introduced a new way of tagging:

You could tag your photos one by one using your existing tags and also automatically suggested tags based on location and date of the photo.
You could tag all the photos uploaded in the same upload session using global tags, so they would get applied to all the photos selected, so you would save time while tagging

Before the introduction of the new uploader, some Panoramio users used to tag their photos in the old empty field with lists of tags separated by commas. After hearing the feedback provided by the community in the Panoramio forum, we just made more prominent the empty box in the new uploader where you can type a tag, or multiple tags separated by commas.

I hope this change is useful, and please keep the feedback coming so we can continue improving Panoramio for you.
