I recently got my hands on a beautiful ETRSi kit, and already on my 2nd trip out with it I managed to be out there in the wild using a camera equipped with a electronic shutter and a flat battery. Annoyed, I quickly got a new battery, but was still wondering how much power the ETRSi draws. So I got my trusty Tektronix DMM and the Radioshack probe kit and checked how hungry the ETRSi is. Turns out, not much. To make it easier, I put my readings into a little chart.

The camera used was a Zenza Bronica ETRSi with the Zenza Bronica ETR AE-II Finder and the Zenza Bronica Zenzanon-S 40mm F4 mounted. I checked if different light levels (cap on and exposed to a bright light) change the readings, and for most modes there was hardly any chance at all. Only in A-Mode the readings changed slightly with the light, so the values for A are averaged.

The average PX28 battery, like the ETRSi uses, has a capacity of 150 mAh. Checking the chart, that means if you leave your ETRSi with the meter set on A, it will suck the batter dry in about 300 hours – or 12 days. Worse, you you put it in your bag with something pressing the Display Button of the meter, it will draw over 30 mA – means you battery will be out in just 5 hours.

But the good news is, T mode draws no power at all – hello star trails. This will be fun.

So the two top tipps for every ETRSi user is:
1. Make sure your meter prism is turned off when you are done shooting
2. Get a waist level finder!

Typical for Venice, Campiello S.Marina is a small square, more a courtyard. Surrounded by several buildings, the main use of such squares were not social gatherings, but the collecting of the cities freshwater supply. Located in the center, a venetian well is still visible.

Being build on several islands surrounded by salt water, Venice has no natural fresh water supply, so the people had to resort to different water sources. In that case, a series of wells was build, to collect and store rainwater in underground cisterns. Isolated from the saltwater of the mediterranean see, over 230 of those underground reservoirs are scattered across the city.

Today, Venice is supplied with fresh water from the mainland and the well system is no longer in use, but the wellheads can still be seen all over the city.

It was high time I started using the Sony A7 with the panorama robot I got myself for Christmas a year ago – the Celestron AllView . So far this is most likely the piece of gear that has seen the least bit of action – but I’m sure that is going to change soon.

This is the first gigapixel panorama I took with the Sony instead a Canon 5D or 5D II, and while I’m very happy with the result, especially since this is the first time for both for the Sony A7 and the Canon 35-350/3.5-5.6L that I used them to record a gigapixel image, it didn’t went as smooth as it should have been. The robot has a 2.5mm jack for shutter control, and since it fitted the 2.5mm jack I have on my Sony A7 wire remote, I assumed both to play together. And surprise, surprise – they wouldn’t. Since I dragged everything up, I fired the shutter by hand, using the robot only for position.

I do have to make an adapter to let the robot control the shutter for future projects. This one was still doable with 210 photos. But the next one will be bigger.
