  • Describe, if you can, the greatest challenge or adversity you’ve faced? How did that situation build up or tear down your faith? If you are unable to share your own, choose one that you’ve seen in someone else.
  • How is it that two people can face a similar tragedy but respond very differently? In particular, one person can be angry and blame God while another can see God working through the adversity for good. What factors lead to these different outcomes?
  • Adversity builds or damages our faith. How did that work out in Joseph’s life? How does that work out in your life?
  • In our lower story, we will be tempted by things like money, sex and power (and many other things). How have you decided in advance to protect your heart and character from the temptations that will come?
  • How can we believe that the Lord is with us (like he was with Joseph) when things look so bad? What difference will that make?
  • Faith is trusting that God makes the difference. In Genesis 50:20 it says that Joseph’s brothers intended harm, BUT GOD intended good. How can you apply and use the “But God” principle in your life?

  1. Describe a time recently when you went through a trial or tribulation. How did you respond? What did you learn through the difficulty?
  2. How do you typically respond to a difficult situation? Which path is most natural for you – fear, fight or faith?
  3. We can’t avoid suffering. What does the phrase “suffering in vain” mean to you? Can you think of a time that you suffered in vain?
  4. James says in James 1:2 that we are to consider it pure joy when we face trials. Does that mean we have to start at the place of joy? At what point can we or should we consider the trial a joy? How does one gain the perspective of joy in a trial? What are we to be joyful about?
  5. God does not cause suffering but he allows it. God is God and on the throne. His perspective is far greater than ours. How can we gain God’s perspective in a trial?

  1. Try this exercise.  Make a list of 10 people you see most often other than your immediate family.  As you consider each person, ask yourself, “Do I believe I am greater than (>) or less than (<) this person?” You may be able to identify why you feel the way you do as well.
  2. When Jesus said we should become like little children, less than <, he did not mean to suck our thumbs and sleep in a crib, he meant that we should view ourselves differently in order to be great.  How have you experienced great love, great forgiveness, great confrontation of sin, and great personal growth when you have practiced being < (less than)?
  3. Sin is painful and destructive. To deal with your sin, my sin, and the sin of the world, we must learn to view ourselves as < (less than). Sin and brokenness comes from pride; healing and forgiveness comes from humility, knowing that I am less than.  How have you experienced this truth in your own life?
  4. Who do you love the most? What would you give up to see them experience the total love of God?

Community Health Evangelism (CHE) is a strategy that is being used to transform lives & entire communities in 118 countries. Pantano uses CHE strategy & curriculum in missions in southern Arizona & around the world.

A successful businessman, Dayo has also served as civil servant, holds certificates in land surveying, missions & business development & a degree in agriculture. He has been in mission work for 13 years. He & his wife have been blessed with 2 boys, ages 20 & 21.

Dayo is the coauthor of the microenterprise development (MED) curriculum for CHE & has taught MED all over West Africa.

The real battles that make a difference are won by the Lord on our behalf. The question we continually ask; “Whose battle is it?”

Folks are dying inside. Daily we have the opportunity to respond to people with purposeful acts of kindness. Sometimes those acts can be life saving. Sometimes they are simply life enhancing. And every act of kindness opens a door to love people to Jesus.

The resurrection give us a power that helps us overcome fear. The power that raised Jesus from the dead is active today and continues to transform our lives.
