Discipleship equals hearing what Jesus is saying and then responding in obedience. If we want to follow Jesus and become like Jesus, then we must listen and respond. In practical ways, we read God’s Word to listen to the voice of God. Then we reflect on what God is saying to us and decide how we will respond. That’s the key to being an All In follower of Jesus. We have to really want it!

Jesus invites us to be All In as we join him and follow him through the small gate and narrow path of discipleship. The gate is small and the path is narrow because we are willing to say “no” to all the options of life and say “yes” only to Jesus. There will be people who will try to deceive us and distract us from the true path. In the end, we’ll know who they are by the fruit of their lives. A true disciple is one who follows Jesus so well that they actually get to know Jesus.

We live with people who are broken, sinful and less the perfect. In our own brokenness, it is easy to see the faults of others and be critical. With other’s faults showing clearly, it is easy to judge ourselves as better. Jesus challenges us to follow a simple rule – treat others as you would like to be treated. And to do that, we need to pursue God to learn from him how to best love our neighbors as ourselves.

When I have a debilitating desire to control what I can’t, I end up with a lot of activity and no movement. I get stuck dwelling on tomorrow and end up powerless to do the right things today. The Bible calls this problem worry. If we are to be effective in our families, at our jobs, and for God’s Kingdom, we have to make a choice not to let worry take over our lives.

Jesus recognizes there are legal means to divorce. In his day, Jewish males could divorce for almost any reason. However, Jesus reminds us that marriage or covenant faithfulness is God’s will. We commit to lifelong marriage regardless of how hard things become. We decide in advance not to look for a back door escape. We commit through “better or worse till death do us part.” Therefore, we will fight and do whatever it takes to preserve our marriage.

A follower of Jesus respects life and treats people with dignity. But that goes beyond refusing to murder. It is wrong to steal someone’s true identity as a child of God and label them or treat them as if they were not loved and treasured. The great antidote to our anger and temptation to devalue people is the act of true reconciliation. Jesus’ greatest act was to reconcile us to God. We follow the example of Jesus.

And so Jesus begins his ministry in submission to God through baptism. Jesus declares he is “all in” in obedience to his Father.

And once we really get grace in our heads and hearts, we can begin to build and sustain a lifestyle of grace. As we learn grace, we begin to show unexpected, excessive and scandalous amounts of grace to others. We learn to enjoy giving the best to others when it is not required or expected.

Find Your Voice

Here at Pantano Christian Church we have a mission. It begins with this: “loving people to Jesus.” But we need to “unpack” what that really means. Is that what we call evangelism? That word has a bad taste for many Christians and their “victims.” What Jesus calls us to do first, is to love. That means we have to have a real relationship with someone. We look for opportunities to engage in spiritual conversations that are created by the Spirit rather than relying on canned speeches. We invite, not coerce, people to consider and follow Jesus. The message is simple – Jesus. We have to quiet the noise and distractions and open up our hearts and calendars to make room for genuine relationships that can foster spiritual conversations.

In 2 Chronicles chapters 10 to 36 we have a continual story of good and bad kings. Jehoshaphat, one of the good kings is facing a “vast army.” The natural response was fear and discouragement. But the Spirit of the Lord came upon the prophets and encouraged the people to trust in God. Their message was that the battle was God’s and not theirs. They marched into battle in the Desert of Tekoa singing and worshiping and were victorious against overwhelming odds. The battles of our lives are not won by our might and power. The real battles that make a difference are won by the Lord on our behalf. The question we continually ask; “Whose battle is it?”

David and God’s people gave tons and tons (called “talents”) of gold, silver, bronze, iron and precious stones as an offering to God. The generous gift of David and the Israelite leaders allowed Solomon to rebuild the temple. David dedicated “all his resources” (those under his control as king and his personal wealth) to insure the Temple could be built. He gave “everything” to the One who is everything. He modeled generous giving which prompted the other leaders to give generously. In this story we are reminded of the powerful principles of giving.

How do you win a war? Good strategy, leadership and courage are vital. But most would trade any one of those for an assurance of abundant resources. The common sense is that the biggest army will win. In our story, Satan himself temps David to count the troops. David commissions Joab and he does the counting even knowing it is not a good idea. David sins against God because he is trusting in the human calculation of human resources to accomplish the work of God. God is not dependent on the number of soldiers to win any battle. So the question that the story raises is this – in what or whom do we trust? What or who do we count or count on? What we count shows what we trust in.

The Ark of the Covenant

The ark of the covenant (“aron habberit” in Hebrew) is finally returned to Jerusalem. The ark represents the active presence of God among his people. But it was more. It was a focus on God’s truth, his power, his compassion. The ark reminded God’s people that God is alive, powerful and active. Nothing good will happen without the presence of God and the recognition of him being the center of all. When the temple will be built, the ark will be in the very center. The presence of God must also be central in our lives if we are to see God doing supernatural things in us and through us.

Like the good Samaritan in the parable Jesus told, we encounter people all along the way who need an act of kindness. Jesus says if we really want to live, then we too must “love our neighbor as ourselves.” Jesus says we are to show mercy to our neighbors, those whose path we cross. People are beat up by life. Folks are dying inside. Daily we have the opportunity to respond to people with purposeful acts of kindness. Sometimes those acts can be life saving. Sometimes they are simply life enhancing. And every act of kindness opens a door to love people to Jesus.

But not everyone will remain dead! We have a power that is greater than death. The promise of the resurrection transforms death and defeat to life and victory. The resurrection give us a power that helps us overcome fear. The power that raised Jesus from the dead is active today and continues to transform our lives.

The word “super” is usually a prefix which means above, beyond, exceeding and over the top. God wants to supercharge us. He wants to give us supernatural abilities or the ability to serve in a way that exceeds what is natural to a human being. God has given each believer at least one special supernatural ability to serve others. These are called spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit to a person in order to serve others in a way that brings spiritual blessings to those being served. If we want to make a supernatural difference in this world, we must faithfully use the gifts God has given us.

God has given us the Holy Spirit to guide us, create a godly character in us and give us supernatural abilities. Get ready to get plugged into the spiritual source of power that can leave you breathless. Get ready to be amped by the Holy Spirit.

And part of the picture of authentic Christianity is our brokenness. Being broken is essential to live the real deal because it is then and only then that we truly rely on the grace, power and work of God in our lives.

In this series we’ve been looking at the letter called 2 Corinthians to explore what it means and how to live a genuine Christian life. We are serious and sincere about being real with God. But the fastest way to damage an authentic faith is to pollute it with things diametrically opposed to God. All it takes is to engage in things that are clearly opposed to God to damage a genuine deal with God. In today’s text we’ll see how we have to be very careful in what we allow to influence us and always give priority to the Spirit. We are called to be in the world but not of the world and that is our ongoing challenge in living the authentic Christian life.

God’s love moves us to be a bridge to those who are not connected with God. We are, in fact, ambassadors/bridge builders who represent King Jesus to those who are distant from him. We live, act and speak in such a way that we help people reconnect with God so they can experience a new life with God in the transforming center.

While we long for the day when all struggle and pain will be over in heaven, we choose to live well here until that time. In total surrender and trust, we seek to please Jesus even when it is hard and even when doing so doesn’t look so promising from a human perspective. The authentic Christian, by faith, will do faithfully do good and make a difference that will be seen on the day we all stand before Jesus.

Cracked Pots

We are like cracked pots of clay. A pot is temporary and in time it will be destroyed. Many of us have seen and held Native American Indian pottery shards. That shard once was part of a whole pot that carried valuable water or food. The purpose of a pot is to hold something valuable. We hold Jesus in us. Even though we easily crack and are broken, we hold a power that is greater than the difficulties of the harsh world around us. Genuine Christianity embraces the brokenness we see while at the same time embraces the power of the unseen resurrected Jesus who lives in us.

It is in times of tragedy that God not only wants to comfort us, but he does so in order that we can be a comfort to others. God’s Word declares that God comforts us. The word “comfort” in the original Greek means “one who comes along side us.” That is God’s greatest comfort – he comes along side us. We are not alone.

In this tragedy, if we are truly the church we will pray. But we will go even farther. We will come along side others who are hurting. In times like these we need each other. Be God’s comfort. Listen, love and be with others. Be the peace and comfort of Christ.

A True Disciple

In fact, he says something amazing – if you don’t become like this little child, you won’t enter the kingdom of heaven. What was it about a child that provides a model for what it means to follow Jesus? In the teaching today we’ll discover what it means to be a true disciple by looking into the face of a child.

There are two paths toward spirituality-the religious path and the faith path. The religious path leads to slavery. The faith path leads to freedom! The way to find acceptance by God is not through self-effort and faithful religious duty. Blessing is found only through faith in Jesus. Abraham is a perfect example of the life of faith. He didn’t trust in his own ability or in his circumstances to be blessed and be right with God. He believed or trusted God-period. The life of faith is cultivating a relationship with God that allows God to do the work in us and for us that we can’t do ourselves. In the end it is a question of faith. In whom do we trust-ourselves or Jesus? It can’t be both. It is Jesus plus nothing.

Jesus Plus Nothing

The gospel is a message of good news. It is the announcement that we are loved and invited into a close relationship with God through Jesus. This is a gift of God that we accept, but cannot earn. It is also news of freedom and it is radically different from religion. The Apostle Paul took this good news of Jesus to the Galatians. They thrived in it. But then some religious folks came and tried to burden them with rules, restrictions and religious guilt. In a harshly worded rebuke, Paul admonishes the Galatian Christians to live in the freedom of Jesus. Thus we begin a teaching from the letter to the Galatians and re-discover that it is all about Jesus, plus nothing. Jesus is all we need and religious behavior will add nothing to what he provides.

Don’t Waste Your Life

Hell is one of the most difficult and challenging concepts to discuss and comprehend. Fear of hell has been misused to manipulate and control people, but we can’t escape that hell is real and however you understand it, it is a negative consequence or punishment for choosing life apart from God. The core meaning of hell is separation from God. Jesus makes two main points about hell: 1) It is a place for hypocrites and 2) It is the place for a wasted life. Hell reminds us to choose God and a purposeful life!

Our Resurrected Bodies

Our Future Eternal Home

The lost world lives in darkness and that makes it really hard for them to find a way to God. God calls us to be lights and shining stars to help people see the reality of God in this world. So one of the keys to helping the lost find God is to live lives that reflect Jesus. The source of the light is not our goodness, but the good we do as we follow Jesus. It is not about being perfect, it is about living in such a positive and different way that others take notice so we can point them to Jesus.

The greatest loss in the world is to be lost to God’s love. And God’s greatest desire is to be in a real committed relationship with those he created and loves. God aches when people are separated or alienated from him. God sent Jesus to “seek and save what was lost.” He sends those of us who have found our way to God to seek those who have lost a real connection to God. In following Jesus, our great responsibility is to help those who those who have lost their way to find the way back to God.

So often in our faith we struggle with things like money and more. The answer to the power money or any possession has isn’t found in sacrifice, but is found in what motives our sacrifice. We sell out to Jesus because of crazy love. When were nuts about Jesus, that changes everything. It changes the way we view our lives, our time, our possessions and our money. God in his crazy love held nothing back. Are we so captured by his love that we go nuts over him?

Forgiveness

It is so easy to be offended and hurt. This world is full of damaged, hurting and even evil people. And when we choose to be offended or hurt, we enter a spiritual trap that can destroy us. Consistently, Jesus calls us to forgive. It is the way to escape the trap and find peace and freedom. In fact, Jesus teaches that our own spiritual well being is dependent on forgiving others. Forgiveness can be tough stuff, but forgiving is essential to live well and avoid the trap of offense and bitterness which in the end will destroy us.

We all have good intentions. Most of us want to be more like Jesus or be more spiritual. But such a worthy ideal requires time and effort. We know all the good things we could spiritually engage in. The greatest barrier in our lives is that we are so busy that we don’t have time to be with Jesus and invest to become like Jesus. Our lives are so full there is no room to add anything else, no matter how good it is for us. Busyness, hurry, worry, noise and distractions are the curse of our age. This is tough stuff to overcome. We crave authentic relationships but do things that isolate ourselves from each other. We are a culture that has learned how to be isolated. How do we belong to others in healthy ways? Paul’s mission and passion is to take the good news of Jesus to anyone and everyone who has not heard of Jesus. That was his laser focus. That is our focus as well. Judging

No one likes to be judged or condemned. No one. It is ugly-always ugly. It leaves deep wounds. As people who were saved, we of all people should shun judgmental-ism and condemnation of others. In Christ, God chose to accept us rather than condemn us or have us stand in judgment. Acceptance and encouragement reflects the heart of God and is one of the most life giving gifts we can give. May we put the needs of others ahead of ourselves and consciously choose not to be a spiritual stumbling block to anyone.

Because of God’s grace and because we are saved, we have an obligation to the world. What we owe the world is something far greater than any financial obligation. We owe the world genuine love. Paul in Romans 13:8-14 reminds us that all that’s good in religion is summed up in the action of real love that meets folk’s real needs. God needs for the followers of Jesus to wake up spiritually and be a light of love and goodness in this world. We need to be so clothed in Jesus that we become Jesus in and to our world.

In Romans 13:1-7 we find clear instructions on how we live out our faith in this world. We are given clear instructions on how we are to live as citizens in the earthly country in which we live. We are to obey and give respect and honor to the government – even when we disagree. There is no room for Christians to be ugly and mean in their dissent and protest. If we need to protest, we are to do it with respect and honor. But the real point is to think and act beyond politics. Our every action, every word and our attitude is under the Lordship of Jesus. We are citizens of the Kingdom of God first and our lives ought to reflect Jesus. How well do we reflect Him when it comes to our words, actions, and attitudes towards our government? Jesus and His Kingdom are far more important than any political issues that will ever surface. So, we are to obey the laws, pay our taxes, respect, and honor our system of government and in all things remain faithful to Jesus.

The Ugly Side of Being Good

We are looking at the older son in the story Jesus told about two sons and a father. The older son represents the kind of person who tries to earn God’s favor through doing good and being good. We are saved not by being good, but by accepting the invitation to join the Father. We are invited to take a seat at the Father’s table.

We meet an old guy named Jacob who wrestled with God. Like Jacob, we need to enter into an honest wrestling match with God. When we are finally broken and limping after our encounter with God face to face, we move from total self-sufficiency to dependence on Him. It is only in full dependence on God that we will experience God’s full blessing and live well.

Enough is never enough. The desire for more and more is actually a form of greed. The antidote to greed begins with contentment. We will explore greed and contentment through one of Jesusâ€™ stories in Luke 12:13-21

The Blueprint

This has to get practical and real. We canâ€™t just have an â€œideaâ€ and a hope, but a plan.

Develop a spending plan to limit consumption.

A budget answers these practical questions:

How much is enough?
What is for us? How can I be content with just what I need?
What is for God? How can I be â€œrich toward God?â€

Prayerfully develop a plan that creates a budget to limit our selfish appetite. It doesnâ€™t have to be complicated. This is not a burden, but FREEDOM!

A Sample Starting Budget

10% Tithe (of gross income)
After Tithe and Taxes:
5% Savings (to avoid future debt)
5% Eliminate debt (pay creditors)
40% Food, transportation & household expenses
30% Mortgage – Rent
5% Medical
10% Vacation, entertainment, recreation
5% Reserve for the unplanned/unexpected

Pantano Christian Church has a Personal Financial Counseling ministry available to help you develop a budget. It can seem overwhelming and weâ€™ll help you. The contact information is near the end of the information in the Financial Toolbox or just call the church office.
Crown Life Groups. In Jan. â€™07 weâ€™ll start our new 12 week life groups that will help you discover Godâ€™s financial principles to help you get out of debt, develop a budget and discover contentment. Call the church office for orientation times.
Give generously. Prayerfully consider your giving to God for the next year. How will you be â€œrich toward God?â€ Weâ€™ve provided a Kingdom First card to help you determine your giving to God this next year. Do not sign the part you give to us. We do not want your name. We do not build a budget off this card as youâ€™ll notice it only states the percentage of your income you are giving and no amount. This is just a tool for you to use to help you grow in being rich toward God.
