i purchased this shredder late in 2010. i used it once, after taxes and it worked fine. throughout the year 2011, i might have shred 10 papers, or less. i went to use it again in January 2012 and the feed sensor is shot. it will not activate the motor. i called ativa for assistance and they had none, short of oiling it...which i did...to no avail. basically, because it's slightly older than one year, i'm out of luck. they obviously don't care if their machines work longer than a year. i'm upset that i spent so much and got SO LITTLE use out of it.

This rarely used 10 sheet cross cut shredder is very disappointing as it never could take more than 2 sheets at a time without jamming. It lasted 4 or 5 years, but was not used more than a few times a year and then just for a few sheets.

This was our household shredder, light use to say the least. After just a few weeks the noise of the motor/drivertain began to change. A phone bill, about 8 pages thick killed it last month. I dismantled it and found that the second gear in the drivetrain was white nylon, while the pinion gear on the motor and the remaining gears were steel. Every tooth on the nylon gear was damaged, cut off about .020" from the bottom by the pinion gear. Final failure was the result of three or four consecutive teeth failing completely. Putting one nylon gear in a drivetrain of steel gears is blatant planned obsolescence. No more Ativa products for us.

Had this shredder for a couple of years. Constantly had to use a pencil or something similar to unlodge all of the wedged shreds around the blades. Found that if I only would shred one or two peices of paper in a single setting this would be ok - but shredding several stacks of the 6-sheet limit it would jam. After shredding a credit card, the blades bent and it didn't last much longer after that. Overall, I got what I paid for, so am not completely dissatisfied.
