Setting the Scene: Kawaii Perfection

We transformed our party space into a kawaii wonderland with the help of our Cute Kawaii Backdrop Banner. It instantly set the mood with its smiling bunnies, frogs, hamsters, and even the cutest little pears and strawberries. It was the perfect background for photos—because if it’s not Instagram-worthy, did it even happen?

To bring everything together, we used our Cute Kawaii Printable Party to decorate the tables, craft stations, and snack areas. Pastel pinks, mint greens, and happy little faces everywhere—basically, a 7-year-old’s dream come true! What started out with a plain old plastic 6 foot table, and a Tablevogue fitted cover in white went completely over the top with this eye catching Pink Tutu table skirt!

Sweet Treats with Extra Cuteness

No birthday party is complete without a showstopping dessert table, and Amelia’s was next-level adorable! From a Cute Kawaii Cake Topper, featuring her favorite characters to the surprise DONUTS! A pyramid of them got a little extra charm with our Cute Kawaii Cupcake Toppers—because more cute is always better. Whats more, we lined some up on these amazing acrylic display racks!

For our donut stands, pre-cut squares of parchment paper with holes punched in the center were placed between each donut so they would not stick together. In addition, we had some dry cereal, with clever names, to snack on, and pretzels and cheese balls with the water bottles on a coordinating side cart, because why not?

Games & Activities: Kawaii Fun for Everyone

More often than not, I throw my kids birthday parties at home, but every once in a while it HAS to be done at the park. I’ve had some experience with our local parks, like for our Baseball party and our Snow Princess Party, and I’m here to tell you, a party at the park does have its perks. Now, back to this Backyard Battle Birthday party at the park, unless you live on some acres, you’ll need to take your party down the road to have some room to spread out.

Grunge-alicious Dessert Table

Let’s dive into this dessert table. First, even if your guest list consists mostly of pre-teen boys, you can still have a dessert table – just change it up to match your theme. Underneath it all, was the most cost effective tablecloth, ever. That is a painters drop cloth, with some mesh netting layered on top. I did embellish with red and black paint drops and drips and a few strategically placed spots where I “stamped” the paint on with a piece of metal mesh.

The graphics I designed have the feeling of metal and mesh and grunge – I even included some crusty looking screws for added interest. I chose bold dark colors to match a bold party theme I imagined could be used for an action packed event. Anything I could embellish with paper, I did! Toppers, labels, hang tags, popcorn boxes, pennant banner, even the backdrop sign

I wanted to have different levels on my dessert table, so I placed varying sized cake stands on whatever wood and metal “risers” I could find in my house. And on those cake stands? SUCH a variety of mini desserts, no kid could possibly be disappointed. We served:

• coconut cream cupcakes
• lemon cupcakes
• brownies
• apple pies

You will want to prepare your party guests by describing on the (included) invitation exactly what to expect with regard to the dart wars activity. I let friends know in writing that we would have extra Nerf guns available to borrow, and that we would provide the projectiles. Having said this, I did NOT want to run out of darts, so you know I bought a BULK pack of 300 for everyone to enjoy!

Our local park was a great spot to set up our party, there was enough wide open space to battle it out with teams, but it kind of needed a few extra themed barriers for the kids to hide or reload behind. The inflatable “bunkers” that look like 50 gallon drums of hazardous waste that we used are longer available, but I’ve noticed a HUGE amount of new bunker sets have come on the market (I’m so sad they didn’t have these when we had our party!). In addition to the inflatables, we also used plain old cardboard boxes, and cardboard sheets. I don’t have great photos of the cardboard because they kind of melted in the rain which I will talk about later, but bunkers can be made out of anything you have laying around, or just use the TREES if you are in a PARK.

And finally, before I go, I would like to show you a little behind the scenes of what happens in real life when you have a party at the park. Sometimes, it rains. And sometimes you have to put all the desserts and snacks and goodies under the table and have all the party guests go sit in cars for 20 minutes while it POURS and SOAKS everything that thank goodness doesn’t really matter if it gets wet (mostly because you got all your pretty party pics). In all the years of having birthday parties for my kids we have never had a rainstorm, ever. This was a first and it just happened to coincide with an event that absolutely had to be outside, and was already mid party when we had to take a break. Thankfully, when it was all over, we went right back to it – and laughed, and dripped a little.

I couldn’t help but take inspiration from the great outdoors for this party theme. Up in the mountains there is an abundance of things we don’t usually see where we live in the city – trees, rocks, foliage, and of course, open space. Taking this inspiration, I began to design all the graphics needed to decorate a Bow and Arrows Birthday Party.

Gorgeous Dessert Table

Micah’s dessert table turned out just perfect! I covered a plain plastic six-foot table with a crisp tan tablecloth from Tablevogue, it became the perfect canvas for hanging all of the paper banners. I used two old wooden crates – one, very deep and inset with mini hay bales, and the other, very shallow and adorned with a paper target printout – as the centerpiece of the table. I also added extra-large arrow silhouette cutouts to the crates, and arranged them as if they were just randomly shot at the table.

I then placed metal cake stands, wood cake stands and more hay bales to use as risers. Vintage jars held snacks to dispense into the popcorn boxes and vintage metal cans held party favors.

We had a mix of store bought and homemade sweet treats:

1. brownies
2. cake pops
3. chocolate covered sandwich cookies
4. s’mores in a jar
5. lemon cake

Archery Party Activity

For this family birthday party, the kids ranged in age from 9 to 15, which made it fairly simple to plan an activity that suited everyone. Before going on the trip, I purchased two realistic, but not real, bows, and a dozen rubber tipped arrows. I also made two targets, a traditional round one, and one in an apple shape, printed them and mounted them to foam core. The kids all took turns with the bows and arrows, and really enjoyed the challenge.

Archery Party Planning Tips

When planning a party, there are several things I try to keep in mind, with budget-saving tips at the top. Start by making a list of items you already have that would work for your event. Before you buy anything, ask a friend or neighbor to borrow items like serving platters and beverage dispensers. Set up a mock tablescape at home – even if it’s on the floor – and take a quick picture of it so you can remember the layout. Also, when I do use disposable cups and cutlery, I always buy the same brand, color, and size so there are never leftover mismatched turquoise knives or unused pink plastic margarita glasses.

The short answer is of course we could, and the long answer takes up the remainder of this blog post! I have a ton of experience hosting kids birthday parties at home, with a whole bunch of them taking place in my front yard. Though I searched high and low, there were no existing examples or inspiration on google or pinterest of how to do my own drive thru graduation party. Let me just quickly preface this post by saying that we took the health of our family and guests very seriously and did not take any chances with any aspect of our celebration.

Choosing a Theme

Banners, signage and a dessert table backdrop sign are all things I do on the regular. But, for some reason, I was struggling with the overall vision and concept – and then it hit me. My daughter’s High School sent a lawn sign to display in the yard, so why not match that? Their logo is black with a rainbow assortment of squares on it, and rainbow is such an eye catching color scheme, decision made!

With some decorations ready to go in the black and rainbow design, I still wanted more! My daughter and all of her friends had been (obsessively) playing the Nintendo Switch game of Animal Crossing since the shutdown started – so much so, that she added her avatar to her graduation cap (she is the one in the middle of the photo above). This gave me an additional idea to illustrate her character in a graduation setting to add to the graphics of the party decorations.

Eye Catching Balloon Garland

This is the first time I’ve wanted to attempt a balloon garland like this and I was so intimidated by the thought of it, I asked a friend for some help. While I couldn’t exactly hire Brittany of Pop Culture Memphis to come and put one up for me (mainly because she is in Memphis, and I am in Southern California), I did hire her to plan it and send me all the supplies for it-except for the electric balloon pump.

She was SO helpful in making the vision a reality! It was one less thing I needed to worry about and figure out on my own. But, there was still so much more to do:

• our yard needed to be really festive
• the decor had to call immediate attention to what kind of event
• this had to really celebrate the guest of honor
• our event needed to be mostly socially distant (I say mostly, because some of those invited were already in our “bubble”)

Party During a Quarantine

One other item I designed was a 9 ft. tall teardrop banner to attract attention from the street. I chose our “Animal Crossing” avatar illustration for it, added her name, and had it printed online. Yes, it was a little bit expensive, but two things: one, we were able to leave it in the front yard for a month after the party to continue the festive mood (the neighbors loved it!) and two, my budget for her original party (had there not been a pandemic) was WAY more than I could spend on this front yard drive by.

That is my son looking like a security guard, this pic makes me laugh. Okay, where were we? I wanted to be sure that guests were treated to one of my signature dessert table spreads, but I couldn’t let them touch anything. My friend Kristin made DELICIOUS salted caramel cupcakes, and the graduate herself made fruity pebble treats, ALL individually wrapped, stickered and packaged in a handled gift bag. DONE!

While some chose to stay in their car and honk and wave from a distance, some donned their mask and “smiled” for a 6ft. photo with the guest of honor. For those who stayed in their cars, we had a couple of those claw grabber tools to hand out the gift bags of sweets. I also bought some popper streamer tubes and (don’t tell my daughter this) dropped them off at local family and friends houses so that they could pop them at the graduate from their cars.

For Our Graduates

We had multiple graduates from my daughter’s class come to celebrate “together”. High School graduation is a pretty big deal, and I wanted her friends to feel like this event celebrated them as well, so all of our graduates were given purple orchid leis. I was not going to let any of her friends get away without a cap and gown photo, so a few at a time came up to the balloon garland for a quick snap (there was a really good breeze on this day as well, and that worked in our favor!).

I wish her party and her graduation as a whole could have been different. I wish EVERYTHING could be different right now. She did tell me that her party was everything she wanted, and that makes me feel a little better. I would like to give a shout out to my sister – the ever present and oh SO talented photographer, my husband for cleaning the front yard within an inch of its life to make it look as good as it did, to my son for being my shadow and gopher all day, and to my daughter, for putting up with it all.

I really enjoy, no, I LOVE to throw kids birthday parties at home. I am lucky that we do have space large enough to have people over-inside or out-and that my husband puts up with the constant stream of crazy decorations that sometimes stay put for several months after the party is over. So when my teenage son wanted yet another of my homemade parties, I really jumped at the chance to put together this Brain Teaser Birthday Party Printable into action!

Gorgeous Dessert Table

Can I brag a little? This dessert table (and the Brain Teaser party activity table right next to it, which we will talk about later) are some of my BEST work! First of all, the tablecloth was the most absolute perfectly-matching-like-I-totally-planned-it thing of beauty. You can pick one up from Tablevogue, and I would suggest that you do, because they are not only weather proof, but also chocolate frosting proof. This tablecloth, the Mimosa, really brought out the color of the graphics, and was a great canvas for this work of art party.

All of the graphics are doodle like sketches that represent anything having to do with puzzles and games. The table backdrop poster features the illustrations balanced together in a kind of tornado shape. It makes me think of what might be going on in the mind of a kid brainstorming the answer to one of the puzzles!

Now for the desserts! We offered SUCH a variety of mini desserts, no kid could possibly be disappointed. We served:

• oreo cupcakes
• lemon cupcakes
• fruity pebble treats
• snicker doodle cookies
• apple pies… yum!

Some of the sweets were adorned with our cupcake toppers, and all of the desserts were gobbled up.

Also on this table, we added a big jar of the birthday boy’s favorite snack – Chex mix! And of course some matching printable popcorn boxes to serve it in.

All over the dessert table, we added elements of brain teasers and puzzles by using items we had around the house (we already had those Maze Balls!), and some new things that we bought for the kids, to also play with. Because Rubik’s cubes are my son’s favorite things to play with (besides that infernal phone permanently attached to his hand) we stuck the party food labels right up on top of them, so good!

Brain Teaser Activity Table

The birthday party activity table was SO fun to put together! It did totally help that Tablevogue had the perfect table cloth for me (like I said, weather proof, kid proof, party proof). I turned the party graphics into photo booth props and put them large and in charge on the table in clear buckets of rice – you couldn’t miss them!

Pages of idiom puzzles to solve, and riddles to trick your friends, which are included in this printable set, were displayed in clear boxes. So many Rubik’s cube type puzzles were practically sprinkled on the table. Then, we set up three trays, each with a different FUN style of puzzle:

• disentanglement puzzles
• balance box puzzles
• peg games

Party Food!

And you better believe we served some food at this Brain Games party! Now, this was an event planned specifically between meal times so we did not have to serve a full meal. But, with a million always starving teenagers around, I knew we would need at least one good snack. Enter: Nachos.

Starting with a table covered in a (can you guess?) Tablevogue table cloth, we set up our Nacho station in the shade, and set out a TON of Brain Teaser Party matching printable food trays. I made crock pot FULL of melted nacho cheese sauce, and had little bowls of everything you could want on your nachos! We ate and ate and ate.

Unicorn Themed!

I promise, making these ice cream bar shaped rice krispie treats is so easy, you could ask your teenager to do it! Which is exactly what I did. And while I did have to bribe my teenage daughter just a little – with a gift of the leftovers – it was well worth it to have these lovely little treats for the party.

So, for these particular Unicorn Party desserts, we want you to know that we used the Rice Krispie treat original recipe – you know, the one from the back of the box. The way we made these a little extra (as the kids would say) was to add some sprinkles right into the mixture.

How to Make Rice Krispie Treats

• 3 TB butter
• 1 package (10 oz., approx 40) marshmallows or 4 cups mini marshmallows
• 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Directions:

• In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.
• Add KELLOGG’S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.
• Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares. Best if served the same day.

After we mixed up the cereal treats, but before they cooled we pressed the mixture into this silicone dessert mold, it was so easy! As soon as each “bar” was set, we popped it out of the mold and added more of the mix – just repeat until you are out of cereal. Next up, we used plain white candy melts and dipped the top of the treat bar, and sprinkled on some- you guessed it- sprinkles!
