Vocal Exercises to Improve Voice Quality And Tone

There are a number of vocal exercises that you can use to improve the tone and quality of your voice. Some of these exercises can even help you develop a much broader vocal range. Here are a few classics to get you started:

Vocal Exercises: Warm-Ups

Your vocal chords need to be warmed up before you sing. Warming up helps protect your pipes from injury, and it also helps you sing a lot better.

To start, practice singing up and down the C chromatic scale a half-step at a time. This will force you to hit lots of subtle notes, and will give your voice a smoother quality.

The yawning technique is another approach. Open your mouth and sing a note. Now, without pausing for breath, keep singing the note while you change the pitch. Think of the way your voice gets higher when you yawn. This exercise should have a similar effect. Use it to go from the bottom of your range to the very top.

Try to spend at least 10 to 15 minutes warming up before you rehearse or perform.

Vocal Exercises: Range

One popular exercise to help you increase your vocal range involves playing notes on an instrument and singing along with them until you can’t sing any higher (or lower). With the help of a tuning device or a musical instrument, you can quickly identify your natural vocal range.

Other range-expanding vocal exercises focus on building a strong middle voice, which is a voice that combines the chest and head voices. Practice singing across your natural vocal break. As you sing, pay attention to where each note vibrates in your throat. Chest voice notes will vibrate lower in your vocal chords; head voice notes often vibrate at the back of your soft palate.

Practice these notes until you can routinely produce them with good quality and voice control. Go a step higher each week until you can sing well above your natural range.

Vocal Exercises: Pitch

Perfect pitch comes naturally to a rare few individuals. Most of us have to practice at it. Fortunately, there are vocal exercises that can help you improve your pitch.

The easiest way is to play a note on an instrument or in a sound software program, and sing that note as it plays. When you match the pitch perfectly, there will be a resonance that isn’t present when you sing off-pitch.

You can also practice pitch with other vocalists. Try harmonizing with another singer or two, with one singer taking the higher notes, one taking middle notes, and one taking lower notes. When you’re all on pitch, the result will be a resonating harmony.

Vocal Exercises: Volume

Volume is another important part of vocals. Sometimes you will need to sing at a higher volume, especially if you sing opera or rock music, or if you sing with a band that plays loudly.

Finding your natural volume is a lot like finding your natural range. Simply start out at a regular volume, singing in your speaking voice. Sing gradually louder until you can no longer sing comfortably. That is your natural volume range.

You can increase your volume by identifying your diaphragm (the band of muscle beneath your ribcage) and using it to push out your voice as you sing. Exhale sharply; the muscle that tightens when you exhale is your diaphragm.

These vocal exercises will help you identify and increase your natural range and volume, and add power to your notes. Practice daily to develop the best tone possible.

There was a hot news on Indian TV news Channels about Indian Agriculture Minister Mr. Sharad Powar being slapped by a Sikh youth Harvinder Singh in protest of rising inflation on food index. Now as usual we all Indians are in habbit of searching raw videos of breaking news “Sharad Powar slapped by a Sikh youth” on Youtube. I did the same and while I was searching about the video, I noticed a very strange title for the video of Sharad Powar slapped. The title was “Why this Kolavery di?/” and next moment it was on my facebook wall. One of my friend posted it. I asked him What does this Kolaveri mean?”. He didn’t know, but posted it as it was a viral video. I don’t promote things, which I am not well aware about. I was confused what does this word kolaveri means, never heard such word. So, did some Google Search and came to know that its a Tamil slang word which literally means “What is this noise?” and its a popular song from an upcoming Tamil movie titled “3″. Canola Oil : the unsafe GM food hits Indian Market

Its festive season here in India. One of the major festival of Hindu Calender Deepawali (a.k.a Diwali) is being celebrated in the last week of the October month. A few days back myself and my father together we went to a Shopping Expo was hosted by CII in sector 17, Chandigarh. In that Shopping Exhibition cum festival there were varied merchants using the platform to popularize their new products in the local and regional market. Going through the exhibition we came across a new brand of oil Canola which was being marketed as much healthier choice over olive oil. Culturally we Punjabis prefer to use Ghee or Sarson oil (mustard oil) for our North Indian desi recepies. Since there has been rise in cardiac arrest case due to blockage of arteries, people are looking to adapt low fat substitutes like Virgin Olive oil and cotton seed oil etc. I was bit amazed by the marketing hype of canola oil and searched about it on net. And the benefit of internet is in its freely available information from general public which most of the time saves one from becoming a guinea pig.

I strongly and openly claim that am against any kind of GM Foods (genetically modified foods) and recently we pitched up our voice againt BT Brinjal. Thanks to Anti GM activists like Dr. Vandana Shiva that people here in India are becoming aware of Evil of GM foods. I will be tweeting this to Dr. Vandana Shiva. Lets see if this can be prevented to penetrate unsuspected Indian kitchens?

West is predominantly Christian world and when ever you step in their domain one thing becomes very evident that even though we Indian have an impression of Western countries as the porn culture, there still has much impact of Christian Holy Book Bible and ethnic communities still preach and adhere to ethical lifestyle. I see the Christian world more like Hindu religion, when I see them chant the name of Christ and enthusiasm to eradicate evil from world. But then the reality is, more and more evil comes out from their surroundings and locale. The corruption of food is still (and also in mystic Vedic culture) considered as one of the grave sin for humans. Is it the outcome of perishing Country Church culture? May be! Any why don’t Christian missionary like Joel Osteen etc raise their voice against evil of GM Foods? The Christ said “Oh my child! share your bread with thy hungry neighbour!”. And what you are doing? Corrupting the food and poisoning thy neighbour.

Now this has come as fulfillment of my prophetic vision (with in 47 days), I have posted in my blog on 12th July, 2011 Who lives in New Jersey? Now there is no need for Mr. Anna Hazare to continue his fast “Ann-Shann”. What matters in democratic-parliamentary setup is the public opinion, which has already in full swing and Parliament has now realized that people of India are raising voice to lay down stringent law to put checks and balances on political executives and bureaucratic machinery. Watching Anna Hazare’s on TV, it reminds me of my Nana ji (maternal grandfather), who was also in his 70s when I last to visited him in my wonder years. It was summer vacations and He use to eat once or twice in a week. I was astonished for a child to see someone skipping food and still not crying out of hunger. He use to puff 3-4 cigarets a day. On asking about this magic of not eating food and still going on, he replied that in old age people don’t have much requirement to eat and he was in a habit of eating only when felt hunger, which I feel was a kind of healthy behavior people use to follow in olden days. So, coming back to Mr. Hazare’s fast, I feel its enough for his bio-system and he should at least eat some now.

Mahatama Ghandhi ji had different opposition, he was not protesting to a democratic system, it was colonial setup and only world forum and world affairs were the instruments to put pressure on the oppressive rule to curb their colonialism in time. Fast in today’s scenario is instrumental in seeking attention of public and finally to seek support and setup a public opinion in favour of one’s agenda, which I think (and you will also agree) has been already achieved by India Against corruption (Mr. Anna Hazare) organization. People like me were already feeling that this parliament is acting like they are our masters and we are here to be exploited economically and emotionally to fulfill their wishes. This was the reason we handed our support to Janlokpal bill over UPA’s Lokpal bill.

TV Channels running scam lottery shows, lure mobile users to play some dead easy guess quiz and put them on HOLD to milk money from their mobile credit wallet. Your call will never gets through. this is deliberately done to stretch you calling cost as they get their margin from the amount you spend holding on your call. Only some studio fake call are shown on their show. The callers are usually the persons siting inside studio itself and they will answer wrongly to prompt you to think that its so easy and you are the only one who will answer it correctly and win the money shown on this show. This is 100% fraud tactics and its a scam and the hidden parties are the telecom connection providers. Do not make calls to such shows see the picture posted in here even a five year old kid will guess it that one half of photo is Indian actors (Bollywood’s) Kareena Kapoor and the other half is Ajay Devgan.
