Parents Who Rock’s annual early spring benefit show features some of the Montclair musicians (and even a rock legend), coming out to make music to raise money to help detainees.

The show, Duets—It Takes Two, will feature the best local musicians, each performing one of their favorite duets.

Montclair singer/songwriter Zara Phillips will be singing with legendary singer/guitarist Richard Thompson. Also slated to perform: Paul Ruderman and Eric Simon, Alma Schneider, Don Sarlin, Leslie Masuzzo and Dan Conway, Jessica Henry, Meg Beattie Patrick and Dean Henik, Sumana Rangachar, Howard Kerbel, Pat and Annika Cioffi, Aliza Mattenson and Ciaran Kinsella, Rob Halper, Carrie Cantor, Ed Carine, Ellen Paretti, Melissa Schaffer, Andrew Klewan, Ben Morss, Eric Sears, Melissa Schaffer.

The show is slated for Saturday, February 29th at 7 p.m. at Bnai Keshet Synagogue, 99 South Fullerton Ave., Montclair.

It will benefit First Friends of New Jersey and New York, an organization dedicated to upholding the inherent dignity and humanity of detained immigrants and asylum seekers. The organization promotes compassion and hope through volunteer visitation, resettlement assistance and advocacy.

GRADFEST Rocks Tierney's to Raise Money for MHS Project Graduation This Saturday, Feb. 29th

THE AMPS ARE SET ON 11. Once again, Montclair moms and
dads will strap on their guitars and grab their picks and sticks to play a show to raise money for their kids in the town’s public schools.

Gradfest, a rocking band night benefit, is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29th at Tierney’s and will feature five great local performers/bands, making music to raise money for Montclair High School’s Project Graduation, which sends new graduates out of town on a cavalcade of buses to a secret destination, for a night of fun and safe post-commencement partying.

Many of the parent performers still play live and record music for a living or on the side. But they also come together to donate their talents when a good cause—like Project Graduation—comes calling.

Zara Phillips is a singer, songwriter, author, filmmaker, adoptee rights advocate, and recovery specialist who has recently been touring and singing with British singer/songwriter/guitar legend Richard Thompson. She has had three children pass through the Montclair public schools. From her earliest days performing as a backup singer with Boomtown Rat Sir Bob Geldoff, to her time more recently as a guitar-toting Montclair mom, dueting with DMC of RUN DMC (also an adoptee), the cross current themes of identity, loss and healing have run through all her creative work, including the album she’s busy recording now. She played her first band night fundraiser for Bradford in 2013, when her daughter was in elementary school there, and is happy to return to Tierney’s for another as her youngest daughter graduates from MHS this year.

Matthew Davis, who will be playing some songs of his own and doing covers with one of the other bands, has been playing music since he was a teenager. His band The Vestrymen released a pair of albums back in the heyday of “college rock” in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s. He continues to write and play original material in both The Thousand Pities as well as the folk-rock sextet The Campfire Flies, whose glistening debut, Sparks Like Little Stars, released last year, features jangling guitars and gorgeous harmonies and garnered the band many new fans. Davis is also a school fundraiser journeyman, having played shows for Watchung School and Buzz Aldrin Middle School, as well as previous PG shows. Davis’s oldest daughter graduated and is a sophomore in college. His twin sons are sophomores at MHS.

A Sock Monster set is a sonic tour that blasts you from covers of ‘60s and ‘70s rock classics from the Kinks and Badfinger through the era of smart power pop and punk (Squeeze, Buzzcocks, Replacements) right up to the alt era of now. With their twin guitar attack, mighty drumming and three singers harmonizing, they infuse old faves and newer shoulda-been hits with a mighty crunch. The four local dads include JP Uva on guitar, who has boy/girl twins in 10th grade at MHS, as well as Jim Kvoriak, whose two daughters passed through the school a few years ago. They’ve played eight school fundraisers, starting with the first Bradfest in 2010, and even been auctioned off twice to raise money for their kids’ schools.

The Hey Honeys are a tight pop-soul band playing bold originals and powerhouse covers by Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin, Lizzo and more. The band features vocalist Aviva Patz, who has two daughters at MHS, including a senior; bass player Greg Carson, who has one MHS senior and one graduate; guitarist Angela Babin, a native New Yorker whose partner has a senior and a freshman at MHS; and drummer Aaron “AB” Belinfanti, whose son is in elementary school. The Hey Honeys have been playing together (with a few personnel changes) since 2010. Their CD, Throwing Quarters Into Fountains, is available on iTunes. Patz’s previous band, Client No. 9, played at one of the first school band night fundraisers, Rocking for Rand School back in 2009.

Between them, the members of the Lily Vakili Band have seven kids who have gone through or are currently attending MHS. Lead singer/guitarist Lily Vakili’s kids have all passed through the school, and her daughter Claire is a class of 2020 senior; lead guitarist Ben St. Jacques has a current freshman; backup singer Cecile William’s daughter is a freshman; and harmonica player Joel Dorow’s two kids also passed through earlier. Between them that’s a lot of teenage eye rolling to have to contend with and maybe that’s why they pack such a mean, growling wallop onstage. They released their first album Oh Alright, in 2018, but it’s the video of last year’s single,
“She Wants What,” that best showcases the raw, electric kaboom of hard rock, punk and blues comes together in their sound.

Gradfest is set for Saturday, Feb. 29th at Tierneys, 136 Valley Road in Montclair. The show starts at 7 p.m. Comedian Eileen Kelly, an MHS mom of boy/girl sophomore twins, will MC the show. Tonight, Friday, November 2, come on out and hear two great bands playing to benefit a good cause!

Parents Who Rock founder Alma Schneider will be rocking with her band the No Rehearsals, doing a set covers spanning the last 30 years of great female vocalists, from Annie Lenox to Kacey Musgraves to Lady Gaga.

Sock Monster will be playing their smart pop/punk mix of great alt rock hits and undiscovered gems.

The show will benefit CASA: the Court Appointed Special Advocates program for children, which provides neglected and abused children with a stable presence in the lives when they most need it.

PWR Annual Backyarder Set for Saturday, Sept. 22nd

It's time for Parents Who Rock's Annual Backyard musical event! Bring your own blanket, a chair, a picnic basket and spend the day—Saturday, September 22nd— listening to some great live music.

Many favorite PWR veterans will be performing, joined by some new faces. Music starts at 12 noon and runs through 5 p.m. Each band/performer will be playing three songs. There will be an updated schedule of performers coming soon so please check back!

The event will take place at the corner of Nishuane Rd. and Cedar Ave., in Montclair.

There is no cover charge, but we will be requesting donations for supportkind.org (KIDS IN NEED OF DEFENSE) a local New Jersey non-profit whose mission is to provide pro bono legal counsel to children. The group ensures that no child appears in immigration court alone without high quality legal representation.

BUZZFEST, Benefit for Buzz Aldrin Middle School, at Tierney’s, Sat., Jan. 27th

Buzzfest, a rocking fundraiser for Buzz Aldrin Middle School, is coming to Tierney’s Saturday, January 27^th. The show features BAMS parent musicians—many of them Parents Who Rock performers—playing with their bands, or solo, all to raise funds for the school’s PTA.

The lineup includes Campfire Flies, Eugene Chrysler Band, SockMonster, Julian Keenan, Jessica Henry and Ken Waitz, and Katie Scandalios. Patrick Wilson, a Tony and Emmy Award nominee, and a BAMS dad, will be emceeing the event.

Campfire Flies is a collection of six musicians, songwriters, and singers whose musical history in the Garden State stretches back decades. The band features BAMS dad, Matt Davis of the Thousand Pities, as well as members of Speed the Plough and The Cucumbers. This acoustic ensemble performs mostly original music with a smattering of covers that reflect their wide-ranging influences.

Eugene Chrysler Band is a trio playing a mix of rockabilly, western swing and Honky Tonk. The band’s live performances pack more wallop than a trucker full of Red Bull and Krispy Kremes, and feature Eugene aka Dan Karlok, flipping his standup base and even playing it behind his back, while BAMS dad Jeff Somerstein keeps the beat.

Sock Monster plays a mix of great songs from the sixties through the punk era and the alt. beyond. This quartet of local dads, including BAMS dad JP Uva on guitar, play often around town, and their smart pop with a punk edge is guaranteed to get you up and bopping.

Julian Paul Keenan is a solo jazz guitarist who uses looping, samples, and tracks to create a lively performance. He sings, writes, produces and even does brain research on music in his “other job” as a neuroscientist.

Jessica Henry and Ken Waitz , a husband and wife duo with a son at BAMS, will kick off the show with a few acoustic duets. Katie Scandalios, is a member of the local mom band, Whatserface, but will be singing a couple of fierce covers from icons like Iggy Pop and the Pretenders, accompanied by Sock Monster.

PWR Lifts Voice in Song at Montclair Center Stage This Saturday To Raise Spirits and Funds For Hurricane Relief, Gun Control

Do you hate the guns that kill a lot of people but love Puerto Rico and Tom Petty? Then you will want to join us for a Tom Petty tribute with your fave Parents Who Rock performers, and come out and donate money and supplies to help victims of the Puerto Rico hurricane and support Moms Demand Action NJ—Active Volunteers Group.

Parents Who Rock performers will be taking to the Montclair Center Stage this Saturday, October 7, to summon the spirit of the late, great Tom Petty and raise money, collect supplies, and raise everyone’s general spirits in light of all the recent bad news headlines.

More than a dozen performers will be playing cover versions of their favorite Petty songs. Musicians include: Zara Phillips, Ellen Sternfeld Paretti, Jonathan Stonbely, Tim O’Connor, Meg Patrick, Budd Mishkin, Jessica Henry, Robert Baum, Steve Ward, Julian Keenan, ROSTAFA, and more.

The show runs from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Montclair Center Stage is located on the East End of Church Street, just off Bloomfield Avenue, in Montclair.

Please bring money to make a donation and supplies for Puerto Rico: specifically batteries, baby food, bug spay, mosquito nets, sun screen, duct tape, tarps, zip lock bags, first aid items, and dried food like ramen, dried milk, protein powder. Come help the Bloomingfields rock Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R.-NJ) out of office Saturday, September 16^th at 8 p.m. at Tierney’s.

The show, a fundraiser for NJ 11th for Change, will feature the band playing their original power pop, as well as favorite covers from classic bands like the Velvet Underground, the Who and the Kinks.

The doors open at 8 p.m., and the music begins at 9 p.m.

Welcome to the 12th annual Parents Who Rock Backyard Event 2017!

We will be holding our event, featuring a lineup of great local musicians performing all afternoon, on Saturday, September 9th from 12 noon to 5 p.m. at the corner of Cedar Ave. and High Street in Montclair. It's open to all ages so bring your kids!

We do not provide food, but bring a blanket and/or chairs and a picnic lunch. We will have flower arranging demonstrations and activities for kids, plus a musical gear sale, so bring yours and buy some! We will also have a masseuse, Vanessa Vozar, from 1-2:30 p.m. and Sarah Otazo will be providing detoxifying "beemer" sessions.

A portion of the proceeds will go to our charity, Reaching Out Montclair, a non-profit that provides food, concrete services and assistance to underprivileged families in Montclair, NJ.

There is no cost to get in, but it is a fundraiser where we pass the hat. Please donate generously!

Mt. Hebron Parents Ready to Rock the Mount, Tomorrow Night, Saturday, Feb. 27

Several Parents Who Rock-ers will be performing tomorrow, Saturday, February 27, at Rock the Mount, Mt. Hebron Middle School’s band night fundraiser, upstairs at Tierney’s.

The show, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., will feature Mt. Hebron parent rock ‘n’ rollers, playing with their bands to raise money for the school’s PTA.

The Thousand Pities will take the stage first. Singer/guitarist Matt Davis started out in the ‘80s and ‘90s playing in the western Massachusetts indie band, the Vestryman, touring a lot and sharing stages with the likes of Robyn Hitchcock, Aimee Mann and Green Day. He took some time off for family and to set down some new Jersey roots, then started playing again with The Thousand Pities. Davis will kick off the night singing and playing an acoustic set of his jangly power-pop originals, with special guests—he'll be joined by some of his friends from Speed the Plough.

Next up will be Whatserface, five local moms who met while their kids were at Rand School and decided to start a rock ‘n’ roll band. They bring a girl-powered approach to their quirky pop and rock songs, some familiar and others from a little further down the charts.

Last up will be Sock Monster, who play a power pop/punk mix of shoulda-been-hits that span the time from the ‘60s through the present, from the Kinks to the Replacements to the Plimsouls and the Gin Blossoms—all the great stuff that should and would get played on the radio if radio was good!

The event will raise money for the Mt. Hebron PTA.

Meet Tom Petty Biographer Warren Zanes at Watchung Booksellers Nov. 19th

Come meet rock 'n' roll biographer and musician Warren Zanes as he unveils his new biography of Tom Petty, Petty: The Biography, at Watchung Booksellers in Montclair.

Zanes, a Montclair resident and Parents Who Rocker, will be at the favorite Montclair bookseller Thursday, November 19th at 7 p.m.

In the new book, Zanes illuminates the richness and darkness, the unlikely success and little-known personal troubles, of rock icon Petty.

In the mid-eighties, already a rock icon, Petty invited 22-year-old Warren Zanes and his band the Del Fuegos to open for him and the Heartbreakers on a three-month summer tour. At the time, Zanes would’ve never guessed that 30 years later he would pen Petty’s biography with the artist’s full cooperation and unguarded honesty.

For the first time, Petty speaks candidly about his struggle with heroin addiction and depression, his troubled first marriage, and drama within the Heartbreakers. The biography includes extensive interviews with Petty, his daughter, former Heartbreaker Stan Lynch, famous producer Jimmy Iovine, Stevie Nicks, and more.

Petty has all the richness and darkness of a great American story, but this one comes with a soundtrack. Like Petty’s music, this book is intimate, resonant, with recognizable characters, tragedy, loss, hope and success. Zanes’s transporting, evocative prose gives us the dramatic and inspiring ballad of Tom Petty’s life and rise to stardom.

Warren Zanes holds a PhD in visual and cultural studies from the University of Rochester. He was a member of the Del Fuegos, and continues to record music. His work has appeared in The Oxford American, and he has served as a V.P. at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is currently the Executive Director of Steven Van Zandt's Rock and Roll Forever Foundation.

The Fest will feature great food, wine tastings, demonstrations, samples, and some fabulous bargains from participating businesses, such as B London, Mahir’s Unisex Barbershop, BeautyMark, CakeaholicObsession, South End Liquor, and many more. Bring the family and check it out!

The South End Harvest Fest runs from noon to 5 p.m. in the South End Business District, on Orange Road. Come out and support the district and hear some great music!

Warren Zanes Will Headline PWR 10th Annual Lawn Party at Montclair Art Museum September 12

Parents Who Rock will celebrate it's 10th Anniversary with an annual Backyard Party that has more star power, has more performers, and will take place on a bigger lawn than usual—in front of the Montclair Art Museum.

Singer/songwriter Warren Zanes will headline the event, and more than 25 acts—many of them PWR favorites, will perform at the show, set for Saturday, September 12 from noon to 6 p.m.

Think of it as PWR's annual backyarder on steroids: bigger acts, more performers, and tons of great music, along with more food and fun activities for the whole family.

Zanes, who may be best known as a member with his brother Dan of the indie rock band, the Del Fuegos, is also a singer and songwriter who has released three solo albums, including the most recent, "I Want to Move Out in the Daylight."

In addition, Zanes has has been a university professor, a vice president at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and a writer whose subjects have ranged from Jimmy Rodgers and Dusty Springfield to the history of Warner Bros. Records. His next book, a biography of Tom Petty, is due to come out in November. Zanes is also executive director of Little Steven Van Zandt's Rock and Roll Forever Foundation, where his work is an extension of his non-profit experience and his teaching at Case Western Reserve, the School of Visual Arts, the University of Rochester and other institutions.

Time Out New York has said of Zanes, he is "as smart a pop songwriter as there is." Entertainment Weekly lauded his solo work as "a thing of indie-pop beauty." Rolling Stone described his music as having "flashes of Beck and 1970s Paul McCartney . . . [and] a lot of what sounds like

XTC." Among those who have already stepped forward to praise his latest recording are Cameron Crowe, Aimee Mann and Tom Petty.

Zanes currently lives in Montclair with his two sons.

Other acts include many favorites from 10 years of shows, plus new members. And after many years, PWR will be once again selling its famous T-shirts for adults and kids. So remember to bring your check books.

The celebration will highlight the opening of the Montclair Art Museum’s exhibition Eric Carle: Animals and Friends. Visitors can see MAM’s brand new exhibitions, enter to win exciting raffle baskets, and enjoy delicious fare from a variety of food vendors.

Family programming at the MAM Lawn Party will include art activities such as a collage project inspired by Eric Carle, the launch of a children’s art contest sponsored by TD Bank, an instrument petting zoo in partnership with School of Rock, and the MAM Art Truck. Don’t miss family yoga with Jacquie Ruderman and Eric Carle face painting! The Family Learning Lab and Reading Nook will also be open for interactive gallery experiences.

Those in attendance can also enter to win an exciting raffle basket comprising everything from relaxation packages to children’s goodies and grabbing a delicious bite from one of the participating food vendors like Cakeaholic Obsession, Cheezen Food Truck, Lost Brother’s Pizza Truck, Ms. Fu’s Yummy Food Truck, The Green Radish, Nick’s Shaved Ice, and Yogic Chai.

There will be no cover charge, but all donations accepted will go toward special needs programming at the MAM.

Parents Who Rock is a nonprofit association of musicians and others based in Montclair who volunteer their time and talents onstage and behind the scenes to raise money for not-for-profit organizations throughout the community. The group was founded by Alma Schneider in 2005 and will celebrate its 10th Anniversary at the MAM Lawn Party. Parents Who Rock has helped to raise more than $200,000 for local nonprofits and educational institutions.

Let The Bloomingfields get your party started this Saturday night. Join the Fields with their friends, The Unmentionables and Kingpin, June 27, at the Old Canal Inn in Nutley.

The show starts at 8—Kingpin is on first, followed by The Unmentionables at 8:45 p.m. and The Bloomingfields at 10 p.m. Come early for dinner and stay late to dance it off!

The Old Canal Inn is located at 2 East Passaic Ave. in Nutley. No cover. Dancing always strongly encouraged.

In the Dreamlife—Carrie Cantor and Malcolm Marsden—will be playing The Fine Grind Coffeebar this Wednesday, Oct. 29. It’s part of the Fine Tuned in the Evening series at the shop, located at 101 Newark Pompton Turnpike (Route 23), in Little Falls. Music runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., so stop by for some cool music and hot coffee.

PWR-ers Rock for Bradford at Bradfest Fundraiser This Saturday, Oct. 25

Bradfest is coming! Bradford School’s rocking parents night out is set for Saturday, October 25^th at Tierney’s Tavern. The show features Bradford mom- and dad-bands—who also happen to be in Parents Who Rock—playing music to raise money to benefit the Bradford PTA.

This time around, four performers/bands are donating their time and musical talents to help raise funds for their children’s school.

Bradford mom singer/guitarist Stacia Thiel will kick off the show with an acoustic set of alt-country meets indie-folk originals and covers. Thiel did an amazing version of "So Like Candy" at PWR's Elvis and Elvis show in February.

Next up will be MMY-FM, featuring Bradford parents Ross Yustein on guitar and Connie and Greg Mattison on vocals and keyboards/vocals. Joining the Bradford trio are Watchung dad Howard Freund on bass, and Paul McKeon, who used to live in Montclair, on drums. MMY-FM plays a mix of great rock ‘n’ roll classics, guaranteed to get everyone up and dancing.

The third band on the bill, Sock Monster, finds cool songs from bands like the Kinks, Clash, and Squeeze and mixes them up with alternative and power pop gems like The Records’ “Starry Eyes” and the Plimsouls' “Million Miles Away.”

“We play the stuff we love, the music that would be on the radio if we were programming a great station,” says guitarist John Paul Uva, dad to two Bradford fifth graders. Montclair resident Jim Kvoriak, on vocals and guitar, and two other dads, Andy Yeates from Verona on drums, and Bob Terhune on vocals and bass, round out the band.

Filling out the bill are The Plimptones, with Bradford dad Mike Potenza on guitar, along with several lawyer friends from the firm Debevoise and Plimpton, who got together to play the Law Rocks Battle of the Bands at the Gramercy Theater in New York in December. Potenza has also played with Eugene Chrysler Band.

In addition, Bradford parent Joe DeLuca will emcee the event. T-shirts featuring a Bradfest logo designed by Bradford mom Debra Pirkle will be on sale and there will also be a 50/50 raffle that night.

This is the third year Bradfest has been held. The PTA came up with the idea in 2010 to take advantage of the number of Bradford parents who played in rock ’n’ roll bands in their spare time and give them the opportunity to raise some money for their children's school.

The event raises lots of money for the Bradford PTA. It also give the school’s parents a great, casual way to kick back, reconnect with old friends and show their support for fellow parents who play music.

The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 from the Bradford PTA website, or $20 at the door that night. Tierney’s is located at 136 Valley Road. PWR's Annual Backyarder Benefit Set for this Saturday, Sept. 20

Come one, come all and join us for the annual Parents Who Rock Backyard Family Event,

which, because of inclement weather, has been moved to Saturday, September 20, from noon to 6 p.m. Bring a blanket or chairs and a picnic so you can relax and enjoy some rocking music to benefit a great cause.

The outdoor event will be held in the backyard at 72 High Street in Montclair.

No-Rehearsals Play Before MFF "Annie Hall" Screening This Friday, June 27

Join the Montclair Film Festival for its 5^th summer of outdoor free films and hear some great live rock ‘n’ roll from PWR performers. This Friday, June 27, the double bill features The No Rehearsals at 8:15 p.m. and a screening of the film, Annie Hall, beginning at 9 p.m.

The film will be shown at Van Vleck House and Gardens, 21 Van Vleck Street, in Montclair.

For this show, The No Rehearsals will feature PWR founder Alma Schneider, doing vocals; Bob Mellman on guitar, Peter Roaman on bass and Miguel Rodriguez playing drums.

Admission is free. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on and come out for some great entertainment this summer.
