Wordpress Tip: Single Posts Showing as 404 Error

From the many ups and downs I’ve had with Wordpress and server issues recently, I’ve learnt a couple of things. Solving a 404 error on single posts is one.

If your Wordpress site is up and running but you can’t view any single posts because of a 404 error page, try this:-

• Go to Settings on your Wordpress Dashboard
• Go to Permalinks
• If you are running fancy permalinks (with date and post title) don’t change anything and just hit the update button.

For some reason, this miraculously cures your wordpress of any ailment it might be facing and single posts should load as normal again.

Thus far, its worked for me but if it doesn’t then it might be a deeper problem.

Careful when you Tweet

I wonder if people realise that when they Tweet something on Twitter it goes out to the world? Its the equivalent of standing on your rooftop and shouting and you never know who’s listening.

How do you know that your boss isn’t on your follow list? Its nearly impossible to track who’s who these days.

So be warned. Don’t slam superiors at work, don’t slam your workplace and don’t slam colleagues – you never know who knows who … well not unless you still want to keep your job that is…

Just something I had to get off my chest.

So….. What’s up everyone?! I realise I’m losing readers here but nevermind If you’re my friends you’ll still have been popping by.

Would you lay down your life?

On a few previous occasions, we’ve had politicians say “unintentionally” or were “misquoted” in saying that Chinese in Malaysia are mere immigrants “pendatang” and should leave if they aren’t happy with the way they are treated. Many have but many remain.

No regard was given to the Chinese who gave their lives for the security we have today. Today, I read the Star Metro and a statement by a British war veteran who fought here during the Emergency made me pause:-

For the first three years, he said, he and his comrades became drill sergeants, training volunteers recruited from Malay villages to protect the planters and tin miners being targeted by the communists.

At one point, the local police were taking “a terrible beating”, but Turnbull believes that the tide began turning when the Chinese started joining the police force.

Most of these recruits, armed with their Senior Cambridge School Certificates, had even lied to their mothers to join the force and the Special Branch, Turnbull quipped.

Coming from an independant person who had nothing to gain by coming here when he was just 22 years old to fight a war that did involve him, I wished the irresponsible politicians who made the inflammatory statements would read it.

People of all races laid down their lives for the country. When they first arrived, they were immigrants, I don’t deny. After a few generations, we are now all Malaysian and no one should make us feel any less so because most of us have known no other home except this one.

Its sad that the politicians still play on the race issue thereby keeping race at the forefront of everyone’s minds consciously or unconsciously. Should the day come when we have to lay down our lives for the country, what will the outcome be?

Personally, I’m not sure I’m quite prepared just yet to lay down a life for a country that does not consider me a full fledged citizen but always a “pendatang”.

No More Krispy Kreme?

With all the brouhaha about Krispy Kreme opening up its first store in Malaysia and kids queuing up for 3 days just to have a year’s supply of Krispy Kreme, it was with a little evil glee that I saw this on Yahoo’s headlines this morning.

Restaurant chains in danger of closing.

Among those named were… you guessed it, Krispy Kreme!

That said, the article isn’t as dire as I make it out to be. They did say that lenders have given them some breathing space until 2011

The temporary reprieve expires in 2011. By then, the company hopes that streamlining, profitable new overseas stores, and other measures will have strengthened its finances.

“Profitable new overseas stores” <- That would be us yes? Though I’ve yet to succumb to their doughnuts.

I wonder why.

How to deal with a high server load?

If you have been following my beauty blog then you might be as frustrated as I am everytime you try to go to the site and find a Network Error or most recently a Suspended Page.

The reason is because its been crashing my host’s server. So much so they’ve suspended it while they take a look at what might be the cause.

I don’t get all that much traffic to be honest. Its reasonable and its been that way for a while. So things have been pretty much constant. Yet recently, its been server crash after server crash and high server loads after another. I’m totally bamboozled!

I’ve uninstalled all the plugins I can do without. I’ve tried to scale down my theme. I’ve done all I can and still its bogging down the server. I read that some “must have plugins” like WP Super Cache and Yet Another Related Posts Plugin can incease the server load.

Yet the former is considered useful for keeping loads and bandwidth down and the latter one of the best for serving related posts. The true cause is being tracked but I wonder if its either plugin causing it or horrors! the theme?

Times like this I wish I knew how to read codes. But I can’t so I can only sit here gnawing at my finger nails hoping for some good news from my host.

When you don’t know the end…

When you don’t know the end of a TV series you are watching, it can be really frustrating.

I was watching a TVB series recently called “To Grow with Love” – nothing serious and not all that good a series when it comes down to it. But after watching it for about 2 weeks every evening and then to suddenly have the final episode wrenched away because you had to go gawk at a RM84k pen…

Yeah… frustrating indeed!

How Come?

How come the MACC is so quick to investigate an allegation of bribery by PR but have ignored a whole investigation into Disneyland trips of over RM1million each?

How come the police are so vigilant these days? They want to ensure you get your 3 square meals a day instead of going on hunger strike?

How come so luan wan… why not call for General Elections – solve all problems LOL… scared right?

Is this taking Twitter too far?

The Star has its reporter Tweeting updates and excerpts of statements made from the courtroom of the Court of Appeal as the Appeal Court deliberates on who should be the legal Menteri Besar of Perak.

Courtrooms do not allow handphones to be used, especially when court is in session.

So, isn’t there some breach of code here? Is this taking Twitter too far?
