The series is fronted by John Mair, newly-appointed head of Journalism at The University of Northampton. The former BBC current affairs producer who also worked for Channel Four and ITV ran a similar series, The Coventry Conversations which attracted guests including Jeremy Vine, Jon Snow and BBC Director General Mark Thompson.

Rob Hopkin, the Director of Question Time and veteran of BBC general election coverage is the first guest of the new Northampton Chronicles at The University of Northampton. Going Live, Question Time and General Elections will reveal some of the secrets behind one of the most popular of BBC current affairs programmes with an average of three million viewers.

Mair said: “I am delighted that Rob Hopkin will be the first guest in our new Northampton Chronicles series. His experience in live broadcasting is second to none. We are honoured that he can spare some time to inspire our journalism students and the wider public on the day Question Time comes from Corby on by-election night.

“Northampton Chronicles will be free for anyone to attend and as a forum will be provide access in the heart of the Midlands to some of the biggest names in the media world in the coming months.”

UN Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Petford said: “I am delighted to welcome John Mair to our University. With more than 30 years experience in broadcasting our students and the much wider community in the county will benefit massively from his commitment to making big names in the media accessible to all.”

The call for projects for this year’s URB@N (Undergraduate Research Bursaries at Northampton) scheme is now open. URB@N is a scheme offering opportunities for current undergraduate students to participate in a pedagogic research project taking place at the university.

At this stage, staff are invited to propose a project idea that they would be seeking to investigate in their area of work. Projects must focus on learning and teaching and ways to improve the learning experience for students at Northampton. Purely discipline-focussed research cannot qualify. The projects should have clear outcomes, and should be mutually beneficial for both the supervisor and the student researcher. Each project should have a named academic leader who will act as supervisor to the bursary student. Students will then invited to apply to be researchers on those projects, with successful students receiving a £500 bursary to support their involvement in the scheme.

The deadline for staff to submit applications is Wednesday 24th October at 5pm. Applications should be submitted via e-mail to Dr Rachel Maunder (Rachel.Maunder@northampton.ac.uk). Information about the scheme, and the application process, can be found at www.northampton.ac.uk/urban
